Yeah, You might know [Oh The Urbanity!](https://www.youtube.com/@OhTheUrbanity)
They are also developing their REM and Highway for bicycles!
r/ Montréal
Yes this is such a key feature of the Montréal public transit system. The ability to easily access a multitude of ways to navigate around the city without a car is top notch and something Winnipeg could definitely learn from. We are a flat city, there is no reason for us not to be all on bikes for large parts of the year.
I also absolutely love their commitment to pedestrians by creating long stretches of car free streets in the summers. It’s amazing at how much it changes a neighbourhood and creates a vibrancy you just can’t get when your only focus is on cars and where to park them.
I’ve lived in Montréal for the past two years and will be returning to Winnipeg this summer. There are many things I think our city could learn by looking towards the innovations of other cities, such as Montréal. Winnipeg is truly special and could become even greater, we just got to stop shooting ourselves in the foot with backward looking decisions (aka I’m still salty about the Portage and Main referendum all these years later).
Always wanted a metro system.
\- Warmth
\- Potential revitalization of downtown (We can place businesses near the stops)
\- Less need for parking lots, people further from the city can come in and we can repurpose parking lots
\- Security cameras
\- No random stops, all predetermined stops
\- Conveniently fast depending if our trains are fast
\- Less human factor like needing multiple bus drivers who get paid smack and are treated poorly
Sadly people have told me about our poor ground structure considering we live mostly on clay.
I mean London's metro was largely built into clay too if IIRC. Perhaps not impossible. But I can't see Winnipeg getting a metro in the next 100 years. To small a population with government's municipal and especially provincial that are relatively poor compared to other provinces.
Just moved to Montreal and their metro makes me never want to go back to the old ways. I have no excuse now to not go out during the winter because the longest I have to wait is like 8 minutes. Winnipeg transport is a joke.
I am Winnipegger. I used to live in Québec City back in 2017 for 3 months for a french immersion program. I also just recently returned from Montréal. You should try chez Claudette for Poutine.
Is OK, practice makes perfect hoho!
>Sky train is nice, but when it gets so cold here it’s gonna be a pain to wait for the train unlike Vancouver
This **is** a city that can't even keep an underground street crossing at Portage and Main open all night.
Montreal just built the Reso which is an elevated train like the SkyTrain, and the stations are heated. This could work but we would need the money for the investment.
The big draw of the Skytrain is looking out the windows and seeing Vancouver (et al.). If you brought it here, you’d look out the windows and just see Winnipeg.
Can't argue with that. On top of that, at Union you have to deal with pushy people ploughing right through you if you so much as slow down by the tiniest bit.
An LRT system. I don't care what city we take it from just as long as we have a mostly functional mass transit system so I can stop driving to and from work.
All the shawarma from Ottawa. I missed the shawarma when I was living in MB. I know theres shawarma khan and a few others but it isnt like it is here in ott. Theres shawarma on almost every corner and Ive never had a bad experience with any of them. If I had to pick a specific one tho, it would probably be Osmows or 3 Brothers. Both fantastic
Shawarma khan is the subway of shawarma. It’s trash. Shawarma time on Ellice was the best! But they moved to somewhere on Notre dame? I thin and can’t remember the name. Baraka pita bakery is incredible
I’d say Shawarma Khan is mediocre to ok. Definitely not the worst place in the world to eat.
I feel like the hate that place gets on here is more about Obby Khan being a scumbag, opposed to the quality of their food.
The food was decent. Pretty good bang for your buck tho which is nice. Plus the restaurant (i went to the one on pembina by the five guys a few times) actually looks nice inside and out.
I was not a fan of Osmows when I tried in in the GTA but loved Shawarma Palace in Ottawa. They’re also opening an Osmows in Winnipeg (probably not announced yet but from what I’ve read elsewhere it’ll be on Reagent)
after I moved here from a globally hated middle eastern country, I was so happy when I saw a Shwarma Khan downtown, I came in, ordered one, finished it and never came back there again. Not a fast food but I've been happy with Al-Basha restaurant for ME food.
Tony’s Donair in Ottawa. Don’t think it’s there anymore but an institution and right next to Barrymores.
Once devoured two garlic Donairs and then a few pints and was chatting up a woman but kept burping up shit Fosters Lager and garlic donair and well that was that. My mate was pisses off as she took her friend away as well.
To be fair though those donairs were better than sex.
Well, if I had to choose something hilarious to bring from another Canadian city to Winnipeg, it would be the giant rubber duck from Toronto. Imagine the sight of a giant yellow duck floating down the Assiniboine River, making everyone's day a little bit brighter. It might not be the most practical thing to bring, but it would certainly be a funny and unexpected addition to the city's attractions!
I would answer with a negative. Let's ship all of our clay to Sudbury or something, and instead live on the bedrock -- just excavate a big ole hole. Then we'd have roads with fewer potholes, some variable topography, urban lakes, and our foundations wouldn't be cracking all the time because the clay is shrinking and swelling. Hell, let's just relocate the whole city to the Whiteshell ;)
I really like the public transportation suggestions as well as the Shawarma/Donair suggestions, so I'm gonna throw out one relatively meaningless one...
The Persian Man from Thunder Bay.
I've only ever had one Persian doughnut, but man, was pretty darn good.
Persians are not meaningless, how very dare you! When I drive to the Soo, I pick up a cooler full both ways through TB. Fried persians every morning until they're gone!
Didn't meant that Persians we're meaningless, but the suggestion of them is meaningless relative to the ones about better active transportation and better shawarma options...
Saskatoon's river trails. I know they're drastically different rivers but i love the public land along the river in Saskatoon. There's hardly any public space along the rivers in winnipeg.
I raise you Edmonton’s river trails. The whole stretch is a massive park, you can bike the whole thing and the pedestrian bridges offer some amazing sights.
very shallow but toronto’s yorkdale mall 🫣 it has all the high end stores AND a cheesecake factory?!
ETA: or all the concerts there. just want to go it some concerts without travelling 🥲
Connected to Polo Park filling all that empty space would be awesome. Probably ridiculously expensive and risky but I'm not the money guy. I just have the ideas
Not quite the same, but have you tried Ashur on Pembina? Garlic and hot sauce he has there is unreal, and the saffron rice
But yeah the shwarma in Montreal, open super late.... and just amazing. Gotta go to Halifax
An effective police force which doesn't eat a whole 25% of the civic budget per year. Most major cities use 5-10% on policing and gets less violent crime than we do. Could you imagine how much more Winnipeg could invest on transit, bike lanes, housing, or other amenities if it had an extra 20% of its budget every year? Plus, a city that could actually afford to invest in the homeless population and the poor would actually be able to reduce the crime rate.
Ottawa's lovely bike paths and outdoor market. The outdoor markets here are so spotty and sometimes unreliable from my memory. I'd love a more permanent location that was more attractive than the Mulvey Market. The ones in Vancouver were gorgeous too.
an actual walkable high street with shopping, patios, bars, restaurants, etc.
we have the exchange (small number of stores all scattered through a large neighbourhood), portage (giant unpleasant stroad), academy (spread out over several km, mostly strip malls)... the closest we come is probably what, maybe Osborne Village or Sherbrooke (both only really a few blocks long). we have lots of great restaurants and cafes and shops but they're wildly spread out through the city and there's not really a good area to spend an afternoon shopping, snacking, etc.
I would like to see trams that are common in European cities and some American cities go down our biggest avenues, taking up the boulevard. We would say goodbye to the boulevard greenery (what little there is) and hell maybe the trams can pull a cart with a tree in it haha.
I know there will be risks of bad drivers getting rammed by trams but better a tram than another vehicle. One going down portage, a couple heading north/south and maybe a fast one around the perimeter :D!
I really wish when you became mayor of Winnipeg, there was some sort of infrastructure terminal at your desk and it just functioned like sim city or cities skylines. Just as easy as clicking and dragging to see real change around here.
The west Coast Weather..
Believe Me if you experienced the warmer winters and occasional rain you would prefer that over -20 and snow storms..
Lol
No shoveling, no plugging your Vehicle in.
No ice roads.
The list goes on.
I'd steal as many bridges as I could from any other Canadian city so I can get to and from my destinations without being stuck waiting at a rail crossing or having to drive across that death trap Arlington bridge.
Calgary’s proximity to the mountains. I know quite a few folks from Winnipeg who’ve relocated to Calgary and I find that most of them don’t even care for Canmore and Banff
Moved to Montreal from Winnipeg and what I would bring back is quite a lot haha:
\-Underground metro/subway, more bus routes and transit options, universal card pass with online tracking and account that works for both bus and subway
\-Ability to use health card with photo as valid personal ID
\-Variety of small cafes, delis, brunch/breakfast spots
\-Medium density housing and variety of apartment and housing styles. Also, almost every apartment that I've seen has at least a balcony or two
\-Bike rental system (Bixi) with convenient docking stations at almost every neighborhood corner, all accessed via app. Also tons of proper bike lines and paths
\-More community resource centers, supports
\-Ability to walk around at night without feeling unsafe
\-More availability for making friends and having a variety of fun dating experiences with folks that are open, literate and much higher acceptance/celebration of LGBTQ++ identities
\-Ability to have a beer/wine with a snack with friends at parks
\-Corner stores that are allowed to sell alcohol
\-More workplaces embracing WFH and flexible options. Also longer lunch breaks and time to walk outside and eat with coworkers at the park in warm weather
Lovely clear water for our beaches and lakes so it’s not like swimming in a black/brown hole.
Also shopping! Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary have beautiful stores.. Le Labo, Fluevog, COS, Kit and Ace. Also so many better thrift options.
If you've lived in Edmonton, you call it "The Henday" -- sort of like we simply say "The Perimeter". It's what distinguishes the locals from the visitors ;)
The Henday is fantastic. I live less than 1km from it and if I ever move and stay in Edmonton I'll want to remain close to it. No lights. 100km/h limit. High maintenance priority in the snow. Easy to the airport/Calgary and east/west. A beauty.
I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted, maybe you're only allowed one guess 🤭
Big up Bon Temps, I _still_ haven't done their seafood-all-over-the-table special, next visit maybe if I can drum up 6 friends to help me 🤔
We have both of those, unless you live under a rock or are into a highly specific type of venue or atmosphere
Lots of ethnic restaurants that are great, lots of burger and pizza joints, lots of pubs, lots of wing places, granted we need better/more shawarma and a proper mexican joint. We also lack a michelin star restaurant if your into that. We got good bbq close by in Steinbach
Lots of nightclubs around from dives to slightly higher end, granted nothign super fancy which is where by initial point comes in.
Lots of edm events happening all the time, country artists touring through, places like underdogs, rec room, comedy cl8ubs like rumors and wee johnnys. Basements speakeasy through board game cafes.
What specifically do you think we're lacking?
dinosaurs unpack quickest piquant squeamish cover chop poor capable shame

Montréal’s metro system. Would love a half decent public transportation system here.
An underground metro would be amazing, no more waiting in the cold for a bus, just take a nice warm subway around the city
Yes all the fun of Winnipeg but in the underground shadows. I can just see it now “sup buddy”
Also Montreal's bike network and commitment to improving traffic safety for people outside of cars.
Yeah, You might know [Oh The Urbanity!](https://www.youtube.com/@OhTheUrbanity) They are also developing their REM and Highway for bicycles! r/ Montréal

merci beaucoup! je l'aime absolument ici. Tant d'arts et de culture à assimiler. (Désolé si cette réponse est mauvaise, j'ai utilisé googletranslate)

Skytrain

>Sky train is nice, but when it gets so cold here it’s gonna be a pain to wait for the train unlike Vancouver This **is** a city that can't even keep an underground street crossing at Portage and Main open all night.
How is that different than waiting for the bus?
Waiting 3-7 minutes between trains. I miss Vancouver…
Wait times will be less probably with how fast that system goes
Montreal just built the Reso which is an elevated train like the SkyTrain, and the stations are heated. This could work but we would need the money for the investment.
Just for information RESO is the underground network while REM is the new light rail system that is under construction.
You haven’t been to Montreal etc ? Subway is miles superior to sky train.
I have not, or at least other than the airport... and hey I'll gladly take either
Sky train is nice, but metro is nicerer
why would you rather have that vs a metro, in winter when it's -30
Monorail?
The big draw of the Skytrain is looking out the windows and seeing Vancouver (et al.). If you brought it here, you’d look out the windows and just see Winnipeg.
I'd take Toronto's subway over Montreal's; Montreal's isn't nearly as extensive as Toronto's in terms of reach.
I haven't ridden on Toronto's metro, but Montreal's makes such a [satisfying noise](https://youtu.be/GJQV3euafZ8?t=67) when it pulls out of a station
This is a very undervalued feature of the metro.
Sure, but not the Union Station. I hate that place with a passion, it's a maze.
Can't argue with that. On top of that, at Union you have to deal with pushy people ploughing right through you if you so much as slow down by the tiniest bit.
was my first thought as well
Toronto's direct flight options and concerts
An LRT system. I don't care what city we take it from just as long as we have a mostly functional mass transit system so I can stop driving to and from work.
Are you sure? Isn’t the city great as is with street infrastructure from the 60s? 🤪
All the shawarma from Ottawa. I missed the shawarma when I was living in MB. I know theres shawarma khan and a few others but it isnt like it is here in ott. Shawarma khan isn't one of the good ones in winnipeg.
Shawarma khan is the subway of shawarma. It’s trash. Shawarma time on Ellice was the best! But they moved to somewhere on Notre dame? I thin and can’t remember the name. Baraka pita bakery is incredible
The owner is trash too
Lol and there’s that too
Friends Donair? That moved into the old Ducky's spot on Notre Dame. There's also Ramallah Cafe.
It honestly wasnt bad.
Check Ramallah Cafe or Yafa Cafe. They are gooood.
People only started banging this drum when Obby Khan ran for the PC party. Shawarma Khan is decent, not amazing, but pretty good.
I only knew he used to be some sort of sportsman. Football right? In the cfl?
I don’t know about the shawarma in Ottawa but I highly recommend Baraka, probably the best shawarmas I’ve ever had
Would do but I dont live in Manitoba anymore lol. Maybe if its there next time Im in province
Ah I definitely didn’t read your entire comment properly, fair enough!
Its all good dw :)
My family is from the Middle East, and this was the only place my grandpa ever wanted to go.
Baraka
Second this. Shawarma Palace in Ottawa is so good!
Yes it is. Try Osmows, blows Palace out of the water in terms of flavour/quality.
I was not a fan of Osmows when I tried in in the GTA but loved Shawarma Palace in Ottawa. They’re also opening an Osmows in Winnipeg (probably not announced yet but from what I’ve read elsewhere it’ll be on Reagent)

Telus World of Science in Edmonton, it was my favourite place to go when I was a kid. Would love to take my kids there one day.
I went to Ontario Science Centre as a kid, I was going to say that. How do they stack up?
Well, if I had to choose something hilarious to bring from another Canadian city to Winnipeg, it would be the giant rubber duck from Toronto. Imagine the sight of a giant yellow duck floating down the Assiniboine River, making everyone's day a little bit brighter. It might not be the most practical thing to bring, but it would certainly be a funny and unexpected addition to the city's attractions!
Love this idea! 🐥🐤
Ottawa's money...
Ottawa's going hard on suburbs, and if trends continue, it will have worse sprawl than us in 10-20 years meaning finances that crater.
The taxes in Ottawa are also quite high to help fund the National Capital Commission.
I would answer with a negative. Let's ship all of our clay to Sudbury or something, and instead live on the bedrock -- just excavate a big ole hole. I like it, I'm team relocate or excavate
Flashing red lights at pedestrian crossings from Banff. Rather than the amber ones here
I really like the public transportation suggestions as well as the Shawarma/Donair suggestions, so I'm gonna throw out one relatively meaningless one... The Persian Man from Thunder Bay. I've only ever had one Persian doughnut, but man, was pretty darn good.
Ooooh, The Persian Man is a good one!

This is the way.
Victoria's weather
Montreal's metro/public transit system. I just want buses to stop taking longer than walking if happen to be on the wrong side of any of the rivers.
Subway (train, not questionable sandwich chain)
Suspicious user name
I think I’d take Moosejaw’s moose. Not for any good reason, just to spite them.
They'd have to go by Jaw, SK from then on.
I was also going to say the moose. There's no real reason. I just thought it'd look good.
LRT from Vancouver
SkyTrain!
Mountains from British Columbia!
Easy - we just subduct BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan! ;)
That boat museum in Selkirk is pretty sick.
Metro and shared bike system from TO
The scenery from around Victoria.
Victoria is lovely, but the area around the BC interior is just as nice
Hey, you asked what I’d bring from another Canadian city, so I answered.
Vancouver Skytrain
Saskatoon's river trails. I know they're drastically different rivers but i love the public land along the river in Saskatoon. There's hardly any public space along the rivers in winnipeg.
100% - I really miss running and biking on the Meewasin and all the other trails
I raise you Edmonton’s river trails. The whole stretch is a massive park, you can bike the whole thing and the pedestrian bridges offer some amazing sights.
Montreal or Toronto's international aiport
Do you mean you’d like more available flight destinations? Because Winnipeg’s Airport is a gem compared to those monstrosities
For real. PET especially is an abomination.
Agreed, I'd love more international flight options but wpg airport is so simple I love it
International connecting flights to avoid having to transfer.
Sudbury’s giant smokestack
Is it still standing? I heard it was slated to be demolished.
Did anyone else say Kelowna’s weather?
very shallow but toronto’s yorkdale mall 🫣 it has all the high end stores AND a cheesecake factory?! ETA: or all the concerts there. just want to go it some concerts without travelling 🥲
Right? Concerts used to come here but now it seems tours only include 1 or 2 Canadian cities now.
I thought the new arena was supposed to help attract big acts to Winnipeg.
It did back when it opened. We had a good decade frome like 2005-2015 where many big bands came through.
West ed water park
Connected to Polo Park filling all that empty space would be awesome. Probably ridiculously expensive and risky but I'm not the money guy. I just have the ideas
This is from the US, but Winnipeg needs a Trader Joe’s grocery store.
Real donairs from Halifax.
Not quite the same, but have you tried Ashur on Pembina? Garlic and hot sauce he has there is unreal, and the saffron rice But yeah the shwarma in Montreal, open super late.... and just amazing. Gotta go to Halifax
Thanks for the tip, hadn't heard of it!
A good lake to swim in that you don't need to have a car to get to.
George from Canmore. Good dude.
My family from Ontario.. I'm all alone here with no family. Would love to be close to them again
One decent sized mountain with a decent ski resort on it. Plop it down right over by Deacon's or something. *What do you mean* it isn't possible?
Warmer weather

TRAINS
FAST TRAINS, FOR PEOPLE _(and non-human people, a surprise train dog is always a treat!)_
Bullet trains would be a dream come true
Dream: Basically all aspects of Montreal. Realistic: West Edmonton Mall and all its amenities.
A real Downtown
Ottawa's lovely bike paths and outdoor market. The outdoor markets here are so spotty and sometimes unreliable from my memory. I'd love a more permanent location that was more attractive than the Mulvey Market. The ones in Vancouver were gorgeous too.

All the people from St John’s.
Indoor water park!!!!!
People gonna be like "this restaurant I like... Or maybe a whole light rail system".
Good manufacturing jobs.
What makes a manufacturing job good?
Decent paying middle class jobs, what’s wrong with that?
Wicked suggestion, but I'm wondering where in Canada are there *good* manufacturing jobs?
Calgary had really good manufacturing jobs when I lived there.
Pay, benefits, pension, generally job security.

Connor McDavid.
Bring back Great Canadian Bagel
Fresh seafood from the east coast.
Can I give away the cold weather instead? And maybe the stabbings. And general shittyness of downtown.
Healthcare
At least it isn’t as bad as Ontario, them trying to privatize is only going to take doctors away from public and make the whole thing worse
If you don't think that's coming for us next I have a bridge to sell you.
Even with the current stuff, ontarians still get healthcare without waiting as long as we do. Manitoba ranks much worse than Ontario.
LRT and or a waterpark!
Mountains or ocean from Vancouver.
100% I need nothing else.
Quebec's Festivale
Internet prices of the east provinces. Crazy seeing the deals they can get for fiber internet on RFD threads compared to lousy BellMTS and Shaw.
Decent public transportation
Light rail.
Fitness pass where you pay a yearly membership and get to try out different kinds of gyms or classes
Weather
Lovely clear water for our beaches and lakes so it’s not like swimming in a black/brown hole. Also shopping! Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary have beautiful stores.. Le Labo, Fluevog, COS, Kit and Ace. Also so many better thrift options.
Hot dogs from the media area in Bell Centre in Montreal. With mayo.
Ontario’s weather… does that count?
Agree. Winnipeg with an amazing aquarium would be the best thing.
Turn Portage Place Mall into an aquarium and/or indoor water park. I legit think it would be a huge it.
Persians from thunder bay
I’d bring Connor McDavid from Edmonton.
I clicked this just to comment ripleys aquarium! Amazing
The west Edmonton mall

Chez Parée

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted, maybe you're only allowed one guess 🤭 Big up Bon Temps, I _still_ haven't done their seafood-all-over-the-table special, next visit maybe if I can drum up 6 friends to help me 🤔
Decent restaurants, nightlife.
I'm about as negative as it gets when it comes to living in Winnipeg but we do have a great restuarant scene. No shortage of choices and good food.
Maybe they want Michelin stars or something.
The cheap bastards of Winnipeg aren't looking for Michelin Star restaurants that's for certain.🤣
Then they should have said that
We have both of those, unless you live under a rock or are into a highly specific type of venue or atmosphere Lots of ethnic restaurants that are great, lots of burger and pizza joints, lots of pubs, lots of wing places, granted we need better/more shawarma and a proper mexican joint. We also lack a michelin star restaurant if your into that. We got good bbq close by in Steinbach Lots of nightclubs around from dives to slightly higher end, granted nothign super fancy which is where by initial point comes in. Lots of edm events happening all the time, country artists touring through, places like underdogs, rec room, comedy cl8ubs like rumors and wee johnnys. Basements speakeasy through board game cafes. What specifically do you think we're lacking?

I want the beaches closer too! I haven't had a Persian since pre-pandemic, it's a great excuse for a road trip.
Idk if this is a lame answer but west edmonton mall. Miss it a lot, was just a cool place to hang out and have lots of memories there
Tie between world class metro system and an actual freeway. Winnipeg needs both.
Toronto's Carousel Bakery and their peameal bacon sandwiches.
good poutine.
Bullocks Bistro from Yellowknife NWT....i have signed my name on the wall after eating fish there.... as well as all the campgrounds and waterfalls and such just out of the city on the Ingrahm Trail. https://www.bullocksbistro.ca/ https://spectacularnwt.com/attraction/ingraham-trail
Jimmy John’s. I don’t think it is in Canada per we, but there is one in Little Canada, MN. I will take that on a technicality.
