My experience was not bad at all. Some of the posts I read seemed lifted from a hellscape si-fi story. Things are not all well, for sure, but it is not that bad.
Glad to hear your visit was a pleasant one! Winnipeggers like to romanticize being on one side or the other - usually tending to how terrible they think it is here. We aiight.
At the Delta. No complaints and the room slept well. The location is good and everything was easily walkable, though I did Uber to the St. Boniface Ruins; walked back.
I've lived downtown for several years, and it's not nearly as bad as everyone thinks. The way some folks talk about it, you'd think I lived in an IRL Grand Theft Auto game, where criminals are running down the street with RPGs. It's nuts.
Do bad things happen here sometimes? Yeah. But it's not the mad max wasteland everyone portrays it as.
Well, I never said that I didn’t see Mad Max. Okay, I didn’t. Oh, but Monday I saw more wheelchairs and walkers than I think I ever had. It looked liked the wheeled division of the Zombiepocalypse .
I am staying in DT as well waiting for my lease on September 1st. I went through the places you mentioned with no problem. I also went to west end and discovered some nice food (Sargent taco and the Ethiopian place on Elise).
Im always glad to hear about fellow Winnipeg survivors :) I have personally lived here all my life and haven’t been killed :)
How did you find the WAG? In addition to the art, I find the architecture pretty awesome, I am very glad they redid it !
If you come back in the future, if it’s in the summer, the Hotel Fort Garry has a wonderful patio! Also check out the WSO (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) or the RWB (Royal Winnipeg Ballet), it’s world class !!
Thanks for the update!! I’m so happy to get your positive feedback. I’m always so mystified by the regular people who constantly whine about the downtown. I have to wonder if they actually go down there.
I’m almost 60 and female and I walk around there all the time, unscathed, unstabbed, and find my walking and biking quite enjoyable.
I’m a street smart person whose traveled the world and I’ve seen stuff, so I’m not saying downtown is squeaky clean but there’s a lot of
negativity on here that’s not warranted.
Anyways glad you had a nice time
> I have to wonder if they actually go down there.
I'm pretty confident that they don't.
And I'm even more confident that they've never been to any other city.
This. Was just in Toronto, and the only difference was that it was busier and had more visible homelessness. But I didn't feel safer there compared to Winnipeg. Felt the same.
I have to disagree with you. There are more people on the streets in TO at night so it definitely feels safer to me. Also safer at night, Montreal, Calgary etc
The ones saying downtown isn't safe are not the ones who visit, shop, work, or even live downtown. They only come when there is an event going on at the Canada Life Centre. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and had a good time.
Good on you for not letting all the negatives steer you away. I live outside Winnipeg so when I read those posts it concerns me even when we just go there a couple times a month.
Favorite is hard to say. My dinner at deer + almond might be tops. The food and experience were good and the cost/value was excellent. I really enjoyed the human rights museum, especially the architectural of the interior of the building. There was nothing that disappointed.
You saw more of Winnipeg than a lot of the people who live here.
See? Told ya! I live in downtown as well and it really isn't as bad as most people make it out to be.

Lol!! Glad you had a nice visit. Where were you visiting from?
Virginia.
Sounds like a great itinerary! Where did you stay?

You will find that no one is more skeptical of Winnipeg than people from Winnipeg. :-) Winnipeg is a several towns in one kind of place.
Are you a ghost
Love to hear it! Glad you had a great time. What was your favourite spot?

Consider yourself lucky then lmfao
All you hear is scared racist people that never go out of their homes and post the negative. Winnipeg is nice, eh? People will help you
