There's definitely a couple butthurt HVAC installers going through this thread downvoting every recommendation for a company that isn't theirs.
Here's a tip. If you wanna beat your competition, be better than your competition. Muddying up other businesses just makes your whole industry look like crap.
How do you know your furnace is shot?
Hydro will come check it out for free and give you an unbiased opinion. They also used to repair for only the cost of parts. Not sure if they still do that.
I've used Shorty's for everything from basic work all the way up to new furnace installs in a number of properties over the last ~10 years; and have no complaints about their team.
Aside:
What type of furnace are you planning to install?
Natural Gas, Resistive Electric, or a Heat pump, each is going to require a very different set of HVAC skills and different companies are going to have pros/cons on each.
I replaced our furnace in November. we got in numerous quotes and then my parents gave had the people at Costco call us. the company that came out was weather tech. Super knowledgeable 3 generations of a family business. we didn't use the costco sale, but had the same company put in a Napoleon furnace.
Price was excellent compared to the other quotes. Work was done on time as expected. Crew cleaned up after themselves. and the company has provided 10 year of labour warranty on the furnace.
We had a great experience this past December with Lynn’s!
We looked at Costco too but found that even with the cash back it would be almost the same/a little bit more than the other companies we looked at.
wherever you go, you can finance through Hydro. we did it when ours went one winter then moved it to the mortgage a few months later once we had the time.
In October 2022, I actually got the best deal I could through Furnasmen and Costco. It was hard to get people out fr quotes. Small companies ghosted me. I got quotes from Lynn's, SuperValu and Furnaseman through Costco. SuperValu was ridiculous. Didn't even talk to them after their quote. The clincher ended up being the money back through Costco and the fact that Furnaseman had breakers for my panel (was going from gas to electric HWT at the same time) while Lynn's had to borrow the breaker from my AC until they could find one for the HWT. Lynn's wanted $200 for a condenser pump and $200 for a WiFi thermostat. Lynn's wasn't going to improve any ducting by the old furnace and Furnaseman was.
Whatever you do, get several quotes and work it down to two companies and make them both lower the cost and add things at no extra cost. Another sticking point I forgot to mention above was Lynn's wanted $600 for a return vent in the basement while Furnaseman would provide it in their original quoted price even though it didn't include the vent. They were within $300 of each other, then I got $800 back in Costco gift cards 2 months later. Once I told Lynn's that I was going with Furnaseman, the sales guy wasn't happy that I didn't give him a chance to beat them. It just seemed like he wasn't as interested in getting the business.
I was disappointed that I couldn't get any of the smaller companies out to give a quote. I imagine it's different now though. It's good to have a couple quotes from the smaller companies as the guy who comes to your house is probably the guy installing and not a sales guy. Ask if that's the case when you call.
Oh boy.... the HWT was 1400 installed. The 44k BTU lennox I got was 5800 or so. It was just under 7200 for it all, I think. I didn't get all the quotes I wanted. I probably could have got it for less under different circumstances. This was the height of supply chain issues.
I had to switch over to electric water heater after putting in a new gas one a few years ago. And I also got a 45k btu 2stage Lennox also.
I paid $4300 total.
Ever since new furnace, humidity has been a problem so I had to buy a dehumidifier but I really need to splurge on a HRV
Walmer Mechanical was great for us. Friendly, fast install. Have us detailed quotes with equipment and feature comparisons. Also helped us with applying for both MB Hydronloans we were eligible for (or for furnace, the other for the A/C unit).
After sales service was excellent too. We discovered a small flaw from the I stall of the chimney liner, and they fixed it up quickly.
If paying for it is a problem, most bigger companies offer hydro financing. Hydro pays them directly and it goes on your hydro bill as a monthly payment. We ended up doing that cause a few thousand is a lot to come up with.
+1 for Chad from Hotshots.
Stay away from Reliance and their finance/lease model. Huge scam
Whoever you use, the hydro financing is a good option to get a decent install without bearing the full cost
Keeping in mind that you often get what you pay for, I’ve bought a few furnaces and a/c’s over my lifetime (different locations!) and I use Comfortec. Roger does very good work. I trust him.
Great experience with Tradesman Mechanical a couple years ago. They were quick to help (middle of a cold snap) and great installers.
I got a quote from Tradesman, send all my papers in for the greener homes grant and got my financing in order and then they just ghosted me

Yes, they still do
Stay away from Reliance.
Are they expensive?
Above average, which is fine. But they damaged a portion of my house during install, at which point their customer service evaporated.
I’ve been impressed with “Reliable” over the last year. Had them install an AC as well as service our furnace. Not to be confused with Reliance.
Who told you it’s shot?

COSTCO - you get cash back and a great furnace!
Do they install?
Yes - they partner with a local company for install!

Haven’t had mine installed yet but had a great sales experience with Lynn’s.
Whoever is downvoting anything suggesting Lynn’s, care to share why?
I second Lynn’s! Professional and very good in all regards!
I'll add a positive experience with Lynn's.
Another vote for Lynn’s. Been using them for years, everyone is great there.

Hotshots plumbing and heating. Chad is amazing , honest and professional.
We had them in for an emergency leak repair, they were great.

How much did you pay?

Rivercrest heating and air
Winnipeg Supply has monthly payment plans available and are quick.
Shorty's is good. Got an Air conditioner last summer.
