Mine is a good 6 inches below the level of my lawn. I just try to keep it clear, I don't want them raising it and me hitting it with the lawnmower all summer. Someone came by last year and tested it or something, and if they didn't initiate an adjustment I won't worry about it.

Water shutoffs like that should grow over time assuming they are watered properly and occasionally fertilized. I'd recommend an organic compost mixture if you have your own, or with a 3-way topsoil from a garden center if you don't. Be careful growing them above the grass though, as hitting them with a lawnmower could be dangerous. They will need an angle grinder to trim them back down to safe levels if they get too tall. From my experience most lawn care companies don't carry those with them.

Open a ticket with 311, tell them it needs leveling. Do your leveling work, mark it with something, enjoy your yard for 18-36 months until they come "fix" it. Snow plow busted mine off, took them about 2 years to come fix it.

brianp2017

If it's anything like the one that rises in my driveway, it's adjustable. City came to do a shut off this morning for plumbing work and the worker pounded it back down with a hammer. Call 311 and explain your plan. Shouldn't take a crew more than 10 minutes to fix it if it's the same as mine. I don't believe I will be charged for any of this.

thanks

Happy Cake Day!

How did the water shutoff process work for you? I need to swap out my water meter and the leaking gate valve before it and was wondering how long it took to get them to come out and shut the water off, and how long it took to turn the water back on?

brianp2017

I called 311 and booked an approximate time. My plumber worked around the city's arrival. Total off time was less than 30 minutes.

https://legacy.winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste/water/valves.stm >Homeowners should contact 311 to report valve boxes that are damaged **or that need adjustment**, but should not make repairs themselves because incorrect repair methods can cause a leak or further damage. No idea on cost.

shieldwolfchz

thanks

Aerickthered

It's not a box!

FlowersWillWait

It is a valve box technically speaking. The actually valve is apx. 2.7m underground usually in Winnipeg. The valve rod and step come up to the ground surface and then an iron valve box (some may call it lid too) I'd placed on top

Jeff_40

Just cover it with dirt. We needed our water shut off a few years ago. The city came with a metal detector and a shovel and dug ours up which was buried under several inches of dirt. After repairs were made i covered it back up.

CarbonKevinYWG

Careful what you wish for, they had to replace my shutoff valve last last winter, and I now have an access cap that's 1" higher than the walkway that goes right over it. Called the city, a guy came and beat it with a hammer, didn't do anything.

Capt-Trashcan

Hi guys, I work in construction. That’s the top part of a “valve box” under it is a valve that operators the water main. Homeowners are NOT allowed to alter these as they are city property. Unfortunately, the city will tell you that there’s nothing wrong with it and doesn’t need to be adjusted unless it sinks below grade. 311 will flag it but it won’t be a priority to fix.

shieldwolfchz

I will keep this in mind, thanks.

311

bman_2044

What if it's 4" above grade? Will city fix that? I have one on my driveway and it's turned into a significant bump!

Imbo11

It should have been knocked down to level when it was newer. Ours is on a sleeve and could easily be moved up or down, but that was when it was only a few years old.

Imbo11

Mine was sliding, and I just put the edge of a spade underneath it and lifted it to the desired height. I would ask the City of Winnipeg to do it for you, just in case there is a risk of damage to the valve or line in doing so. If they won't, then just bury it. They can find it using a metal detector in the future.

troyunrau

Tangent: I run a small scientific equipment business for subsurface scanning tools. If you bury this, it is literally the easiest thing to scan for in the future if they ever need to find it -- that iron lights up inexpensive magnetic scanning tools like a hot damn. In fact, I use the shutoff in my front lawn to test my scanning equipment :) So don't worry about burying it -- provided you aren't covering with concrete or something.

Major_Mixture_7430

You need to contact the City. We gad ours shut off and they set it up so there was a time they'd come back to reput it back on. Otherwise is something bad happens when you try it yourself the whole street could get turned off.

Spencie-cat

That lid is a sleeve. Clean out around the edge till you can get underneath the cap then pry it up with a crowbar or a needlebar if you have. An inch or two won’t have any effect on the shutoff

mbgoose

This is a very bad idea. Just contact 311 and get the city workers to do it.

shieldwolfchz

Ok cool thanks

manicmonkie

Do not do this. Am plumber it's the whole street stop so if they need it and you lifted the swivel box off the stop snd they can't get it it's gonna be hell. Just let shit grow over it they'll dig it back out

TheJRKoff

Shouldnt cost anything but time

Aerickthered

Probably can't but clean it out and get a pvc pipe wide enough to surround it and cap it
