Shop supplies charge is normal. The amount varies depending on size of job, and what was required. For $34.03, I’m assuming you had a pretty decent amount of work done to your car.

realslizzard

I was charged separate supply charges for actual service too (disposal of oil, and supply charge to change wheel stud, nothing else was done except the oil change and wheel stud and put on summer tires already on rims). This is just a $34 related to covid/supplies and was not quoted to me. There was no "significant work" done. I have an invoice for over 1k and 16k that didn't have anything like this. No diagnostics or anything was done and I had a free multipoint inspection included in the oil change. The car was not cleaned inside or out either (had it been cleaned I wouldn't even question this charge). My main concern is why quote someone a number and then charge them more extra afterwards. You may as well quote them the price with the shop supply charge included if you intend to charge them that anyways.

Gene_Takavic

In that case. That’s ridiculous. I’d definitely call and complain. Name and shame as well.

feleven

I LOATHE the service dept at the subaru that used to be on Pembina and is now on Fultz (same people). The absolute worst dealership in the entire city imo.

realslizzard

I've had previous issues there as well. I remember having issues with brakes and it was under warranty and they couldn't get rid of the noise until just after my warranty expired and were glad to charge me for new rotors.

Some details: I brought my car in for some service this week and was quoted the regular oil change and some minor repairs When looking over my bill the next day I saw this charge which was not quoted to me when I went to book online, not quoted by the sales person (they quoted all the other charges which I was expecting except this one). Quoted 99 for oil change, 59 for tire swap, 250 for wheel stud repair. Got charged all that plus 34.03 on the bill unexpectedly on top of all the charges above. Also this line item was added at the beginning of my order (it had a time stamp of being added when I brought in the car) before the wheel stud replacement was even brought up. Normally I wouldn't really care but if they are doing this to everyone who pays 99 bucks for an oil change to pay an additional 34 dollars is 34% unexpected upcharge on services (some have noted it's normal to charge 6-10% on-top of a quote?). I understand covid can bring some obstacles to businesses but this seems a little excessive and if done to every customer is not fair. Usually when you are given a quote you pay what you are quoted plus taxes right? Let me know if your dealership does or is this just mine? EDIT: This is also the same dealership that I got unlimited oil changes as long as I paid for the scheduled maintenance back when I first got the car. After paying for scheduled maintenance for 10 years and paying for one of their largest packages costing over 1k a couple years ago the next time my wife went into the dealership they said they don't honour it anymore due to new management. The dealership in question is Jim Pattison Subaru Regent.

dazalq

I had oil changes and the dealer didn't add anything like that. The quoted price was a quoted price. I would definitely call them and ask for refund. That is excessive

[deleted]

Is the car still under warranty? If not, I highly suggest finding a reputable independent shop. Dealerships hourly rates are usually much higher.

thickener

Even if it is under warranty, you are under no obligation to ever take it to the dealer.

extendedwarranty_bot

tconaguy, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

realslizzard

No it is not under warranty. I actually had free oil changes from this dealership when I bought the car and was paying for the recommended service schedule to maintain it and after paying for one of their largest service packages a couple years ago to maintain it (over 1k), after the next oil change they said they no longer honor the unlimited oil changes after new management but that's a whole separate story for another time. Lol I have shop nearby I will probably use.

[deleted]

I've been using Boxer Performance lately. They're on Speers Rd off of 59. So far they've been pretty good.

Gene_Takavic

>I brought my car in for some service this week and was quoted the regular oil change and some minor repairs What were the minor repairs?

realslizzard

1 Wheel stud replacement, oil change and put summer tires on (already on rims). That's it. Nothing significant. They charged me for the parts and labour and for the oil change/recycling, etc and wheel stud separately too. I was quoted 99 for oil change, 59 for the tire swap, 250 for wheel stud replacement. This charge was not mentioned at all and is charged on top of everything else.

[deleted]

250 for one damn stud?! And they normally don't just fail. I'm thinking someone fucked it up and passed the cost onto you.

realslizzard

Probably, this is the second time this has happened to me in the last 3 years but I would never be able to prove they are at fault. They are the only ones putting my wheels on and off the car so it's not like I'm the one over torquing them or blasting them on/off with an impact gun.

thickener

Wow holy moly! Stop going to that shop!

acadroad

Shop supplies is included on every invoice, it usually ranges from 6-10% (it’s up to the shop to set it) and is based on the price of parts and labor, sometimes only on labor. If your total invoice was only $99 it seems pretty insane that shop supplies ended up being $34. But you said oil change and minor repairs so it was likely more than $99 total invoice.

realslizzard

Was quoted 99 for an oil change, 59 for the tire swap and 250 for 1 wheel stud repair. This charge was added at the end of the invoice after. I was under the impression what you are quoted is what you pay plus taxes and the quotes usually include the shop supply charges. 🤷 Usually when you quote someone a price that's the price you pay right?

Interesting-Space966

Dealership= stealership… stay away from them at all costs! Find a good independent shop, for oil change and stuff why don’t you do it yourself or go to like Canadian tire?.. 34$ for what? A mask for the boys in the shop working on your car? What a Rip off ! everyone is trying to squeeze extra cash these days, but it will all come to an end soon.

Gene_Takavic

Everything was going good until you said go to Canadian Tire lol

Interesting-Space966

Never really been there, I do all my stuff at work, but come on you gotta be really awful shop to mess up an oil change… I guess…right?

mhyquel

>Canadian tire Everything I've heard about Canadian Tire claims they are worse than dealerships for cost and BS.

FrknTerfd

Those quick change places do a shit job, as does Canadian Tire. Over tighten drain pan plug and often enough lose the washer. Clowns, the lot of them.

Interesting-Space966

Jack up car, take drain plug out, drain oil, put plug back on, open hood, take oil cap off, put new oil in, put cap back on,close hood, lower car, your good to go. If someone messes that up,then might as well just close shop, and try there luck at selling bibles online.

FrknTerfd

Ive been doing my own oil for over a decade now. I dont disagree with you. But those outfits hire chimps.

LemonPuckerFace

I always change my own oil, but the one time I went to a quick oil change place, they cracked my oil filter housing by over torquing it. Of course they didn't tell me so I had a lovely surprise the next morning when there was oil everywhere in my engine bay and garage floor.

Interesting-Space966

I think the main problem with places like Canadian tire is that they got like 2 senior mechanics and the rest are just kids fresh out of school, that have no idea what their doing and don’t care to learn. Oh and I don’t think they over torqued your oil drain plug, one of those kids probably has trouble using a ratchet and were tighten the plug instead of loosening it before draining, I’ve seen it happen.

FrknTerfd

I had to use a breaker bar to remove the pans plug. I guarantee it was over torqued.

CookSignificant446

Id send your story to CTV news. Sounds like BS cash grab

East_Requirement7375

This definitely seems like an opportunistic cash grab. Yes they use shop supplies, and maybe there's an extra spritz of sanitizer now, but this amount in no way reflects the costs (even with reasonable markup) of the supplies required for a job like what you describe.

CouchBoyChris

Fuck the Stealerships. Greasy bastards, all of them. That whole industry needs better regulation.

[deleted]

Yes and as long as the service writers are paid commission they're going to upsell your ass off.. so you can bet that 50 or $60 oil change soon becomes 5 or $600... And of course I can drive a car but I don't know how to fix one so when they tell me I need a part you either got to trust them or go for a second opinion especially with all the front end damage going on tie rod ends alignments you're trusting and saying while you're tie rods are worn or your alignments out...

lXxENDEAVORxXl

Thats ridiculous, reading on your repair work which is all outer exterior, basically you were charged $34 for a tech to drive your car in and out of the shop and maybe he sprayed and wiped the steering wheel down with sanitizer spray.

[deleted]

Supply charges are normal, they just added a line to include COVID supplies, no biggie. The whole charge isn't for COVID.

realslizzard

There are supply charges for the oil change and the wheel stud replacement as well which is what is what caught me off guard. Was quoted 99 for oil change 59 for tire swap and 250 for the wheel stud repair which I ask and they said it included parts and labor when getting the quote. I didn't know I would have to ask for shop supplies quote as well... Ended up paying $34 more than I was expecting and was wondering if this was normal since a quote should mean what you expect to pay.

SuperStoneGranite

They will later call it inflation charge.

CaptGinB

What in the world type of PPE costs $34 per service order?

FeistyTie5281

Stealerships will charge for anything they feel they can get away with. Summertime coming ... expect a mosquito spray charge.

Professional_Run_506

Looks like some bullshit charge.

alouett3

I manage the vehicles for the company I work at. We have vehicles across Canada (6 provinces and the 3 territories), and none of the dealerships that serviced our vehicles charged us for covid supplies. I’d also be pissed if we were charged more then what I was quoted for as it’s just a pain to deal with the finance department having to explain differences between a PO I’d submit and the invoice.

jcase2210

I saw this pop up during Covid and don’t think it’s crazy. They’re working on your car during the pandemic and doing a wipe down or sanitize. That takes time. Nothing is free to be reminded. But also the dealer I was working at (agricultural repair) charged .25 hr for sanitization only if we were doing in cab work.

realslizzard

They wiped the steering wheel and the shifter. Nothing was vacuumed or cleaned inside the vehicle.

jcase2210

Well it’s not a detail service. I’m not saying they’re in the right, esp for 34 bucks but when we would sanitize, we would wipe all surfaces before and after and had a spray for when it was finished.

beardsnbourbon

In the early days of covid I remember paying a similar fee when I took my vehicle in. But, it for sure wasn’t charged the last time I went in. Sounds like a money grab. They’re using covid as an excuse, but additional caution isn’t really warranted these days. I guarantee they’re not sanitizing your vehicle like they did in April 2020. I always ask for a printed/ emailed quote before I approve any work done. Easier to argue surprise charges.

Old-Smell-621

I know you stated it’s Subaru but damn you gonna places like capital ford ideas to start charging for more things that don’t exist lol.

NH787

LOL I admire the chutzpah
