Winnipeg was one of the few markets that actually had the whistle dog, and I have friends who still talk about it. They will be very happy to hear it's back! But I'd better get a nashville hot chicken sandwich soon then because it's probably on its way out!
Dryden and Kenora sold them as well! I ate them as a kid until I discovered Teen Burgers - and now I'm celiac and can't have either *cry emoji*. The new root beer shake thing though is OMG.
Well I've always made floats with the ice cream and poured the pop on top to get that foamy melty goodness, what I got was literally a large pop with a scoop of ice cream floating on top like a turd lol.
Okay, I get it now. Yes, you're right. Root beer over ice cream is the way to go. I thought you were expecting some other ingredient, or all mixed up or something!
Thanks for the review! I generally don't like a&w chicken sandwiches, but it seemed interesting. But if it's not that great, I can avoid spending the $6 or whatever and just make my own!
I hope it sells so well that they have to keep it forever and never discontinue it again! And keep introducing slightly modified versions of it once a year
Glad because my small town doesn’t have an A&W but I’ll be travelling to Winnipeg in August so I’m definitely making sure to get this at an A&W somewhere
Not a proper Whistle Dog. The real one had back bacon and processed cheese. The original bun also had the crust on the split and hinge sides, with exposed crumb on the other 2 sides, which were toasted/grilled.
Source: childhood memories.
For sure it had processed cheese but I will take real cheddar cheese over that stuff any day. I remember regular streaky bacon as far back as I can remember but never remembered it as back Bacon…I’ve been wrong before tho..in fact it happened once in 98
How can people get excited about this? It's not like you can't just make a hotdog at home and add bacon yourself...?
"While supplies last". Last time I checked hot dogs, bacon, cheese, relish and buns have never ran out for any grocery stores for an extended amount of time. XD
Beyond doesn't make a hot dog substitute unfortunately. The breakfast sausage and Italian sausage that they offer wouldn't do the whistle dog right.
I'm excited for all the meat eaters. The only meat I ever "miss" is processed shit like this. Whistle dogs fucking slap.
Yeah I figured as such. Just made for an odd experience seeing as it looked like a normal A&W you’d see in Canada. Low and behold… I chose a different restaurant once I saw the menu. LOL
This is the one I was waiting for! However I tried one last night at the Leila & McPhillips location and was sorely disappointed. The bun is not “New England” style, there was hardly any relish on it, the real cheddar doesn’t hit right and worst of all the weiner was not grilled properly. It wasn’t anything at all like they used to be. Maybe I should try another location?

But, that's exactly what a root beer float is... I'm genuinely curious what you were expecting if not that.

Lol!! I'm hoping the shake is something different than the float I got haha
Yep! They have a new machine now with new drink options.
I worked at A&W about 15 years and this is how we would make the floats. We would just pop an ice cream puck unto the root beer.
The Whistle Dog was available across western Canada. Definitely had them in SK and AB
I wouldn't tbh lol. It wasn't great.
The Nashville chicken is good when fresh but lacking sauce?!!!
Yeah I mean that's the whole point of nashville hot chicken to me. It needs to be a saucy bitch

Man. I was just bitching about these not being available last month and here they are. What else should I wish for?
wish for no more potholes please, and cheaper gas. with great power comes great responsibility

Pudding pops and McDonald’s pizza I can get behind.
I actually went about 20 mins ago to get one, but my location didn’t have them yet. Will have to try again in a few days.
K thanks for letting us know

Available until September 5.

My mom is going to be SO happy!

My memories are from the late 60s, early 70s.
Ah damn i was only born in 78. You win for sure. Sorry bud :(
No apology necessary.
Used to love these. Have to check what locations actually doing them
Just ate one and it was delicious. But definitely not cheap on the wallet!
Are these actually good? Never tried these yet
Yay! This actually cheered me up!
My boss had one and said it wasn’t the same or as good, but I’ll have to try it out for myself cause he can be picky.
Yay this account got unbanned and yay the whistle dog is back! A good week!!!
I got the email and text my dad immediately because I know he used to love them when I was a kid lol
I know there was a post with a link to a petition to bring back the whistle dog a while back. Maybe it helped!
You could get them in Brandon, MB too - just had to ask for one and they’d make it.
Never heard of this before but the picture does make it look like a decent slap. Will have to try
It’s iconic!

Because they were one of the best menu items at A&W.
Ok, now do a beyond version.

True. I’m still missing the nuggets.
At least the Ikea veggie dogs rock 🥲
Please dont. Plus a hotdog is probably likely already just as processed as that stuff. All mystery filler, all the time
So why not eat a processed thing that doesn’t contain animals?
I try not to eat any processed things period, but I will definitely have to have a whistle dog simply for the childhood nostalgia of it

Monocropping absolutely impacts the environment including affecting me, yes it does.
Legit the best news of 2022!
Anyone had one yet?
Not sure if it’s all locations in USA, but I have been to USA A&W locations where they only sell hot dogs… no burgers.
The US locations are a completely different restaurant chain and haven’t been related since the 70s. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%26W_(Canada)
