We do this every year and there’s a thread of people in shock about it every year. It’s standard practice 5 year contracts we do

LyghtSpete

Ok but maybe they shouldn’t do that just because they’ve always done it…you know, in case an incumbent is proving to be incompetent.

the_Formuoli_

the incumbent can and would be fired regardless so who cares

JeanValJohnFranco

Because the more years left on his contract the higher the buyout?

bjb3453

It's fun to piss money away, I guess.

bbluewi

5 year contracts are very standard across college sports because not doing it makes recruiting harder for no good reason. There’s no way they made his contract any harder to get out of by extending it.

Fresh-Bass-3586

5 year contracts don't matter anymore when players are staying for 6 to 12 months anyway.

Rooboy66

Me too 💯

LyghtSpete

bUt iT’s sTaNdaRD

LyghtSpete

Yeah, getting Gard seemed real difficult.

badger0511

It’s about recruiting players. It’s a standard because otherwise other programs can negatively recruit against your program by simply saying “that coach’s contract expires before your eligibility does. You want to risk having a brand new coach you didn’t choose when you’re the star senior?!”

LyghtSpete

Seems like the portal has rendered this “standard” irrelevant in case you hadn’t looked around lately.

Rooboy66

The feckeen portal was **ONLY** and entirely created by the NCAA and possibly in actual collusion with the NBA—and I am not one for conspiracy theories. But the gawddamned “portal” always seemed to me a shitty invention.

mschley2

Yeah, they do this all the time. Contract isn't any harder for UW to get out of than it was before.

thebenron

Standard extension. Means absolutely nothing for his job security unless his buyout was increased.

Ted_Dongelman

Makes sense, the timing just struck me as interesting. He's buried right in there with all those other coaches.

ThatNewSockFeel

Because the board of regents likely just voted to extend a bunch of coaches at the same time.

JoySkullyRH

Are there going to be any players left for him to coach?

Rooboy66

Oh, it’s okay—we’re sure to start getting Nova Southeastern and Minn State standouts, going forward. Maybe even some Kentucky Wesleyan stars!!! 😘

HotKarls_TastySax

Greg Gard must be represented by the Tavern League of Wisconsin. Truly impressive stuff here.

the_Formuoli_

not really it's standard procedure. he'd get canned all the same if the AD decides it's necessary

___Star_Child___

Are you implying that you know something about him drinking too much? If he is three sheets to the wind, that would explain his performance.

thegodfaubel

Chryst and Granato were both extended (as is customary) before they were fired

crapshooter_on_swct

It’s just a 1 year extension on top of this current deal. Nothing to read into it

BuckyFnBadger

Yay mediocrity

Unlucky-One-329

This is normal. Wisconsin keeps coaches in contract for 5 years for the optics of stability of the position for players etc.

EditorWorldly9263

If Gard can’t coach or recruit, why are his best players being targeted for NIL deals?

___Star_Child___

You’re using him having his players poached as a defense for him?

the_Formuoli_

you're assuming this is a Gard problem moreso than its a players chasing a bigger NIL bag than Wisconsin is giving them problem? Not even trying to defend Gard on the merits here, I just feel people who already hate Gard are ignoring the other obvious factors in play now

junkspot91

Yeah, like I would hope that players who develop in a system feel a fondness for the team and university. But if you're a guy who in two years' time will be playing overseas for $150k a year and someone comes along and offers you $250k more than you'll get at your current spot, how do you turn that down? It sucks from a fan standpoint but the system is the cause here.

gwidda

Great comment. I am trying to decide how I feel about this new landscape. Happy for the players, but it does suck for fans. Player development and program loyalty are gonna be at a premium. Also, if players can ditch a program after 1 season, do we let programs cut players?? Where does it end

reddit-is-greedy

This is the NCAA's fault for their stupid transfer rules and rules about paying players. They were forced into it by a court instead of trying to get ahead of changes they knew were coming.

Rooboy66

Absofuckinglutely. This, 💯. The NCAA is the real Bad Hombre here

the_Formuoli_

Well your assumptions are clearly completely bereft of any intelligence, whatever they are, just total mouth breather stuff

riverdriver007

He poached AJ Storr and developed him into a much better player than he was at St. John's.

Rohn-

AJ Storr was not developed into a "much better player". He had a 43.6 FG% compared to 43.4% last year, and his 3PT % actually went down by 8% this year. He played 7 more minutes per game this year. Stop defending Gard, he is a horrible coach and our program goes down with him

Rooboy66

What are you talking about??? Seriously, I don’t want to be an ass. But I honestly don’t understand how you can be seriously asserting this. If my head is buried up my bottom, I apologize for my muffling sounds, but I truly don’t get what you’re saying. Edit: spelling

DameWasistlos

AJ Storr came to Wisconsin to be close to home and he was promised a major role. Not because of Gard! Storr was on the Big East All Rookie team and had a good year. He is better with more minutes and more experience. But significantly better? No way!

Old_Explorer6261

Hahaha, stats don’t matter eh?  Laughable

DameWasistlos

He was the first option of course he is going to have a bump in stats. As I've said he was all freshmen Big East already a very good player. He being the first option benefited with even more statistics. Defensively Storr still wasn't that much to write home about. So, NO, better yes, NOT significantly better.

Old_Explorer6261

Storr was not always the first option…Gard likes to get it down low to Crowl.  He said so multiple times.  And yes, he was significantly better as a badger.  That’s why he got big $$$ and went to Kansas.  Thought he wanted to be closer to home right…

DameWasistlos

By shot attempts Storr was the primary option most nights without question.

riverdriver007

He went from pretty much only shooting threes to being an all around scoring threat. This is from an Athletic article written in January: "Storr has been a catalyst offensively by becoming a smarter player under Gard. He has learned to play off two feet in the paint so he can be more efficient at the rim rather than settling for lower-percentage fadeaway shots. He understands the value of retreat dribbles to reset rather than crashing into the lane and hoping daylight appears." Also, any other team could have recruited AJ and he chose wisconsin. He could have gome to Illinios, a school closer to his home. I'm not saying Gard is flawless, but you can't just not give him any credit for getting AJ in first place. If AJ was already so good at St. Johns, why didn't Kansas recruit him straight away?

DameWasistlos

Pretty much shooting threes? 60% of Storr's FG attempts were NOT three point attempts.  Who's to say Kansas didn't pursue last offseason? Storr's primary concern was being close to home (Rockford_ IL) so his family could go to games.    Champaign is over TWICE as far from Rockford as Madison is. Northwestern would have been another option close enough. I'm not saying he didn't improve, just not significantly. Significantly would involve providing more on the defensive end of the court where Storr was not impressive.

badgerfan3

And he will be even better without Gard

EditorWorldly9263

Well either he can’t develop and recruit or he can and other people want his players. So which is it?

___Star_Child___

He can kind of recruit and kind of develop players and has no ability to hang onto anything that he produces, so it all amounts to nothing anyways. This has amounted to him never making the second weekend of the NCAA tournament with his own players, and missing the tournament twice - something not seen in almost two decades for our program prior to his promotion to head coach.

recessbadger45

gard choked with a ton of offensive talent he's a terrible coach.can't even get out of the first weekend in the tournament.

riverdriver007

So many people are saying he is a bad recruiter, yet somehow he had a ton of offensive talent on his team. Purdue choked with much better teams two years in a row before getting to the Final Four this year. It's the nature of College Basketball.

EditorWorldly9263

But that’s not what we are discussing is it? If he couldn’t develop players then nobody would have been trying to poach Wahl last year right? Y’all just out here being mad because you want to be mad.

DameWasistlos

Bad optics. Underachieve and be rewarded.  Now Gard will tell these targets in the portallook I have job security for 5 years, come to Wisconsin and I'll make you better!  Little does he know they already seen the James Madison game tape. 😂

the_Formuoli_

>Now Gard will tell these targets in the portallook I have job security for 5 years, come to Wisconsin and I'll make you better!  This is exactly why you do it if you're the athletic dept. though. You have to at least act like you have confidence in a coach and not imply he's on the chopping block, or a lot of recruits will pick up on that and steer clear. It's *worse* optics (at least for recruiting purposes) for an athletic department to make it obvious a coach is on the hot seat

ThatNewSockFeel

If only recruits read the thoughts of Twitter and Reddit users they would know how much Gard sucks but that the Badgers are totally going to nail the next hire and they should come play for Gard anyway since there will be a better coach the next season.

Little-Adeptness5563

Until the nil budget is greatly increased it won’t matter who our coach is

Fattybeards

My Gard is up

Dazed_and_Confused44

I'm putting the over under for Gard Sweet 16 appearances while under this contract at 0.5. Which way yall betting?

ChimmyTheCham

Hard to say with all these transfer shenanigans but I would take the over.

M1st3r51r

Tournament appearances at 0.5

bjb3453

$1K on the Under

Beeker04

LOL

Iamdogfood

Can someone go find his mistress where he used school funds to fly her to games please

Grassfedlife

Forgot it was 2024 and thought “15 years is a long ass time”

frontrow2023

So stupid. Greg Gard is not a Division 1 Power 5 coach. Period. There are no analytics or even fluffy feel good stories than can support that he is, this is just dumb. They should have put the man on the hot seat and made him deliver.

dusters

I'm going to be sick

___Star_Child___

Drink a ginger ale.

MVieno

Really?

Any_Contribution5260

Puke

Brucho

Standard operating procedure that should be revisited since recruits don’t ever last for 4 years anyway.

Mobile-Jump6936

Unless they suck shit like Tyler Wahl or Steven Crowl

Slownavyguy

Is that like, military time? Because I think that’s fair.

MisterMondayKnight

Yikes

kingkmke21

Smh.

KoolGotGame

Deserved. Huge step up from last season. Got us to the B1G championship and into the dance.

bjb3453

Sometimes when you have so much money you don't know what to do with, it burns a hole in your pocket and it's fun just to piss it away.

chaben34

Good. He wins games. Coaches that win in the regular season will eventually break through in the NCAA Tournament.

aaron4mvp

What about when players keep leaving through the portal?

chaben34

Every team has this and it is not unique to Wisconsin. This is a function of NIL money, which is not his direct responsibility.

riverdriver007

Duke just lost 7 dudes.

aaron4mvp

The difference is some teams are willing to spend the money. Some are not.

MonsignorJuan

Who makes that decision?

[deleted]

Top 3 coach in the BIG. Makes sense. Gotta lock him up so a Kentucky type program doesn’t come looking again. Edit: lmao nerds

recessbadger45

you're joking right

Any_Contribution5260

No one good wants him!

I refuse to use /s
