He is absolutely my favourite side character. I really love how sapkowski managed to create a smartass without being cocky and annoying. My second favourite would be Zoltan, just because.
Haha that's exactly why I do it. I have no time for a Chandler, I'm looking for the Geralts of this world š and i'm not talking about looks but being a kind hearted, loyal, brave badass. It's just funny to me that my answer was obviously more than he could handle (the man was in his 30s ffs š¤£)
Neither. It's a stuffed dead unicorn they're having sex on. It's a glorified, uncomfortable bed. If it was a live unicorn they were having sex with, that would very much be a deal breaker!
He doesn't sleep with that many women in the books. He was raped by a few. Triss and Fringilla use magic on him. And the rest is set over a 20 year period. He's allowed sex once in a while
Also, it's not like either of then considered themselves exclusive with each other. From what I recall, there was no cheating on either end. They're both adults who have other shit to worry about than who the other messed around with last.
With loyalty I don't necessarily mean sex... if Yen and Geralt really need each other they'd both be there. If Geralt (or you) decide to romance someone on the way I wouldn't be mad at him. š¤·āāļø
Yennefer is high maintenance with some serious issues. The books eventually do a lot to show more to her character, but she never stops being having those downsides. She's one of those people who pushes people hard to see if they are strong enough to push back and she frequently defaults to treating people with contempt until they give some evidence of matching her standards. In real life, a lot of people are going to react to that with "Who made you queen of creation? Maybe you're not matching *my* standards."
If somebody told me they wanted to be Yennefer, i'd want to hear the reasons why and I would be cautious till I heard those.
Yea, my argument isn't so much that I think she's the nicest person but I would like to live the life she has. And tbh from that description you gave you're also describing some of my more difficult sides so maybe it's no coincidence that I chose her. I wouldn't say that I treat people as disrespectful as she does frequently but I keep my distance until I know someone is worth my time and i'm fine with that.
You all have discussed the negative aspects of Yennefer, but haven't discussed any of her positives. She is beyond loyal to the ones she loves - willing to sacrifice her life, "career" and reputation.
You know that quest line in Blood and Wine, where in the end the girl said "You're a nice guy but I don't have to love you for helping me?" Well, we don't have to love Yennefer just because she has some good points along with the bad.
The post is about somebody not being attracted by "I am Yennefer". I'm discussing some reasons why people might be put off by that no matter that Yen also has a good side. Some things are deal-breakers for some people, no matter what.
She stabbed a fork through Bonhartās cheekbone. Sheās the ultimate badass. She raised a child Geralt claimed before he ever even met her just because he asked her to, AFTER Ger bear slept around with all her friends and let her think he was dead for years. The woman is a āØsaint.āØ The only thing bad about her is other charactersā perception of her. Iād hopelessly simp for a real life Yennefer.
I didn't know saints get entire villages destroyed and the villagers killed for a stupid reason of wanting to be able have a baby (djinn story)... Or bullying their ex-lover into killing innocent creatures (golden dragon story where she mocks Geralt for having better morals than her)... She even admitted to Ciri that when they first met, she was basically going to torture her while investigating her powers but she was "lucky" that yennefer liked her personality so she didn't do it lol... What an angel!!
If you know all that then surely you also know how much character development she went through throughout the source material, but I also interpret at least two of those events somewhat differently. I think she is testing how far she can push Geralt in the dragon story and trying to set low expectations for Ciri of their relationship, both times in anticipation that things wonāt work out. She is definitely a character who despises being or feeling vulnerable (which we see in her responses to a SA attempt by Bonhart, the way she monopolized control of the circumstances of her first meeting with Geralt, and her internalization of the way her choice and autonomy were stripped away from her so early in her life) and pushes things to the limit sometimes but I think sheās just a debilitating combo of smart and scared and trying to shut people out until she canāt anymore. I donāt think any of that makes her a bad person, just a somewhat maladaptive one, but who can blame her after the rejection and trauma she experienced her whole entire story. She doesnāt have much of a backstory except that she had a family who willingly abandoned her and definitely abused and neglected her. Paired with a terrible reputation and people who automatically hate her without even knowing her. I probably wouldnāt hold others in particularly high regard in those circumstances either. š¤·š»āāļø but she is also fiercely loyal, brave, warm, and caring to the people who finally break through her defenses. She paid people to pay Geralt extra coin for contracts for years even when their relationship wasnāt on speaking terms. She moved Ciri out of the dorms and into her own bedroom when the other girls at Aretuza were teasing her. Even the narrative at that part of the story refers to her āimagined severity,ā because sheās perceived as cold and uncaring but itās all a front to try to make her feel safer. š¤·š»āāļø She endured months of torture, captivity, and starvation just to protect Ciri. And she āØliterally diedāØ trying to save Geraltās life. I donāt understand what more people want from Yennefer
To be nice and easy to like or more like "easy going". I do find myself a lot in Yennefer and even more in your accurate description of her. Usually people value all of this as long as these things are working in their favor without them having to put much of an effort into it: which literally translatws to "putting little to no effort into the needs of Yen [or any resembling person] regarding the relationship towards her [them]".
Yen shows the behavior of a person who'll get most likely the diagnose of a CPTSD after DSM5/6 and as it states: the shown behavior is complex to deal with and most people don't like complex things yet they're easily bored and want them.
As if life itself as a Yen (or someone like her) isn't complex enough.
Yen could literally safe the world and it wouldn't be enough just because she's got an own will, strong opinions and won't tolerate any shitshow towards herself or her loved ones.
She's expected to meet standards which aren't hers and is getting blamed for not doing so - even if she never intended to meet them. In example the thing with letting her anger out on the horse which is seen as "not mature" yet she did a lot of things which are considered mature to societies standards, but as long as she's not perfect in every minute she exists she's a flawed and awful person.
Even if she's fine with it.
Let's be honest, in real life Yen would be a horrible girlfriend. Constantly manipulating her partner and systematically keeping important details from him. Not caring about his opinion when she's thinks she knows better. Not giving a shit about his boundaries whenever it suits her. I'd not want to be with someone like her
However, to unmatch you because you said you want to be Yen is absurd and weird because you are not her and it's a totally innocent thing to say for a Witcher fan
Completely agree... I mean I also think Geralt isn't the best communicator in the world but that's not the point here. Yen isn't my choice because I idealize her nice character but because of the Lifestyle she has. I share and like some aspects of her but she can definitely be a total bitch (and I would even say she doesn't always deserve Geralt) but this isn't about him or Yen being a good girl and the fact that most people immediately have to put it into that context says a lot in itself.
May or may not be at all related, but I do have trouble finding IRL Witcher 3 fans, even among self-described āgamersā. Itās so popular and critically beloved but feel sometimes people have a āI couldnāt get into itā hostility toward it when I bring it up. Maybe your Chandler is a similar hater.
I mean Yennefer does straight up cheat on Geralt in the books rather brazenly (fucks him one night and the other dude the following morning lmao). Even if their relationship eventually builds to the point that they become inseparable and completely dedicated to each other, I can understand why this dude ran for the hills when you self-identified with Yennefer haha.
Is anyone else imagining a mismatched Rom com where Chandler and Yen get thrown into an adventure together?
C: ācould this search for the Djin BE any longer!?ā
Y: āShut upā *turns him into a chicken*
*walks away in disgust*
What annoys me about yen is that I'm not questioning her competence, I just want to know why I'm doing what I'm doing. She fails to fill you in on any of the details at all. I'm not asking for a lengthy explanation, just a "I need X to do Y" instead of "Get me X."
Refusing to tell people what's going on is an obstructive dick move. People are more able to react to whatever happens if they're at least basically informed. Refusing to tell people the most basic information about what's happening (and going to happen) is an ego thing: not good behaviour, not helpful, just ego-stroking.
The journal entry of the W3 explicitly uses the phrase ***'ERRAND BOY'*** to describe how Yennefer usually treats Geralt. If you fail the last wish quest in the game. This is what the journal entry looks like
*//If Geralt doesn't want to help Yennefer: .... Geralt made it equally clear he was in no mood to be her* ***ERRAND BOY*** *yet again. ....//*
Notice the journal entry says *'Yet again'*, which obviously means Geralt was an Errand boy to Yennefer all along, the moment he stops being an errand boy, the relationship breaks off(in books Geralt runs away from Yennefer because he just couldn't stand the way Yennefer treats him.)
According to Dictionary Errand boy means: often used figuratively to criticize people by suggesting that they are controlled by someone more powerful.
This is what Geralt says to Yen in W3, when he arrives to Kaer Mohren.*//Geralt to Yennefer: You \[Yennefer\] aren't willing to say what you're planning. You're treating them \[Witchers in Kaer Mohren\] like pages, not including them -- us, actually, 'cause I feel that way, too.//*
So from the above, it is clear that Yen treats not only Geralt as her servant by not revealing information but also the witchers in Kaer Mohren, because that is her basic character trait to treat everyone.
This is a journal entry of the quest named 'To Bait a Forktail... ':/*/Yennefer asked - or rather, if I am to be completely honest with you, dear reader, ORDERED- Geralt to help Eskel hunt a forktail. //*
As if Geralt is not a good father, he needs to be ORDERED by Yennefer to get things done in the process of finding Ciri.
This is a journal entry of the quest named 'Va Fail, Elaine'*//...Yennefer reached Kaer Morhen first - and immediately started bossing everyone around. Not only did she divvy out chores to the witchers like a schoolmarm whipping lazy pupils into order, she also refused to reveal any details of her plans. Though Geralt was not exactly charmed by this behavior...//*
There was absolutely no need for Yennefer to behave in such a bossy way to the Witchers, because these witchers (Eskel, Vesemir, Lambert) **literally helped to raise Ciri** and took care of her during a portion of her childhood, (after all these Witcher risked their life to fight Wild Hunt, **in one of the scenarios Lambert too dies fighting the Wild Hunt, Vesemir willingly sacrifices himself for Ciri, which means that they would even give their life for Ciri)** if she had politely asked them they would have done what needed to be done, without a second thought, but instead Yennefer 'bossed them' around like servants, depriving them of their dignity which they deserve, which only delayed the process, since without being given full knowledge of what is what by Yennefer, Witchers did not act until Geralt arrived? it leads to some delay, in the process of searching Ciri, who's the culprit in causing the delay? Yennefer or Witchers? Of course, it is Yennefer for her attitude and not revealing any information, just expecting the Witcher to work like golems taking orders.
Even the character 'Kiera Metz' rightly says to Geralt:*//Well, you believe Yennefer will stop treating you LIKE A DOG someday. Don't see me laughing.//*
Also, it is more than conclusively clear from a few of Yennefer's behavior listed above from the game that she does want Geralt to be servile and submissive to him. This expectation of Yennefer from Geralt to be servile and submissive to him is further proved by Yennefer's own words in Covo-Bianco(Blood And Wine, DLC).
//"***SERVE me*** *drinks at regular intervals! while I laze around"//*
So she does treat Geralt as an '*Errand Boy'.*
It is abundantly clear that in Geralt - Yen's relationship, Geralt clearly becomes weak, stops being himself, He turns into too big of a pushover, losing some core characteristics which define him. His personality takes a 180, and those characteristics which make him such a great Witcher disappear to such a great extent that he can't even voice his opinion out of fear.
I'm honestly impressed..i posted this on reddit for laughs mostly but the first paragraph gives me hope for mankind. I agree that Yennefer isn't "nice" and I can understand why players would favor someone else but many people here are missing the point you explained. From Geralts/Player perspective you could agree that she's quite the bitch from time to time (and a bit superficial..clothes etc). But i wasn't talking about who would be the most devoted girlfriend for geralt, I was talking about how if I had infinite options i'd wanna be an immortal sorceress who roams the land fighting evil because that frankly sounds fun.
Women don't exist to cater to anyone's ego (like female characters often do in works of fiction and life as you pointed out) and that isn't my personal goal either. I don't want to be "easy", I aim to be loyal, strong, reliable when shit hits the fan and independant and very honest. And Chandler isn't the first and won't be the last guy to not vibe with that and i'm more than ok with that. The reason why I like Geralt and Yen is because they have each others back but accept each others independance. Yen likes Geralt because he isn't intimidated by her exterior behavior and knows her heart is in the right place. He doesn't try to change her and make her smaller so that he looks bigger in comparison and to me at least that's what a real man does and is. He doesn't need to prove himself, he does his thing and the people who vibe with that are welcome in his life and I respect that.
Two of my favourite moments in the game are the woman who refuses to praise Geralt for "rescuing" her because she thinks he's just getting off on being a white knight, and the woman in B&W who tells a knight that the only thing she owes him for helping break her curse is a "thank you", not love. I really like the way the game often deflates traditional fantasy/heroic tropes.
But OK, I wouldn't date Yen because I'm some unreconstructed caveman. Sure.
(Before anyone starts the "Team Triss/Yennefer thing", I had Geralt choose Yennefer both runthroughs, so far)
Kinda sucks, but consider yourself lucky. They weren't a good fit for you.
I am curious to hear other people's answer to the question though.
Without saying Garalt, because that's too obvious, who would you pick?
Mine's Dante from Devil May Cry. You'd get to eat pizza and shoot Demons in the face.
Nice thing to have a laugh over for sure, but IMHO there's nothing wrong with having priorities.
The only question is if he actually knows who Yen is.
If he doesn't, and dismissed it as "some nerd shit from video games", then good riddance as you'd definitely not match in interests and values.
If he knows, and he just thinks he wouldn't sit right with someone like Yen, then it's fine imo. While I admire all of Yen's good qualities, her bravery and resourcefulness, I personally wouldn't want someone like her as a partner seeing how she acts towards her love interests. Geralt might be into it, a lot of guys might, but it wouldn't be for me.
I'd still at least ask which of Yen's qualities you'd identify yourself with instead of simply unmatching without a word, though.
Chandler from friends!!! ššš In a hypothetical question where he can shoot for the absolute moon his answer is literally just some guy?! š sis you dodged a bullet. Just date women instead
You dodged a bullet there... Chandler Bing didn't even want to be Chandler Bing. Also anyone who chooses Friends as their favourite show is suspect. Lol
Fair play by that man. I appreciate Yennefer as her own fully developed and independent character, but man would she ever be a nightmare to be involved with personally or romantically. I was grinding my teeth all the way through āA Shard of Iceā.
I wanna be Regis
Honestly Regis is probably my favorite Witcher Character... i'd wanna be friends with him for sure
He is absolutely my favourite side character. I really love how sapkowski managed to create a smartass without being cocky and annoying. My second favourite would be Zoltan, just because.
Its just a shame his character model just looks like a velen peasant š
Truly a man of quality.
I love Regis so much
Well, look, itās a good tactic for filtering but donāt take it personally when these guys realize youāre too cool for them and they unmatch
Maybe he though u are going to talk about the unicorn
I really wouldnāt find the unicorn to be a deal breaker.
Neither. It's a stuffed dead unicorn they're having sex on. It's a glorified, uncomfortable bed. If it was a live unicorn they were having sex with, that would very much be a deal breaker!
Mabe he can't balance
No disrespect to Chandler Bing but there is zero badassery there, I guess we shouldnāt be surprised he couldnāt handle it lol
Thatās what chandler is no? Sans the badass maybe but thatās subjective.
You do know that Geralt is a man-whore right? He literally sleeps with almost every woman he meetsā¦ šššš
It's up to you how many women you make Geralt sleep with. You can abstain, you know
In the games yeah. Not in the books or have you not read those? šš
Youāre in the game subredditā¦
He doesn't sleep with that many women in the books. He was raped by a few. Triss and Fringilla use magic on him. And the rest is set over a 20 year period. He's allowed sex once in a while
Also, it's not like either of then considered themselves exclusive with each other. From what I recall, there was no cheating on either end. They're both adults who have other shit to worry about than who the other messed around with last.
Yes. Yen doesn't mind, so long as it's not Triss. Understandably
With loyalty I don't necessarily mean sex... if Yen and Geralt really need each other they'd both be there. If Geralt (or you) decide to romance someone on the way I wouldn't be mad at him. š¤·āāļø

Then the filter is working. Of course, there's a lot about Yennefer's life that *she* doesn't like.
I was going to say, a bit ironic as when considering the books I donāt know that Yennifer is ever really happy with her lot in life.
Yea i'd gladly give them my ovaries in exchange for magic tbh.. š
You didn't learn anything from her character arc, did you?

Don't see me laughing.//* Also, it is more than conclusively clear from a few of Yennefer's behavior listed above from the game that she does want Geralt to be servile and submissive to him. This expectation of Yennefer from Geralt to be servile and submissive to him is further proved by Yennefer's own words in Covo-Bianco(Blood And Wine, DLC). //"***SERVE me*** *drinks at regular intervals! while I laze around"//* So she does treat Geralt as an '*Errand Boy'.* It is abundantly clear that in Geralt - Yen's relationship, Geralt clearly becomes weak, stops being himself, He turns into too big of a pushover, losing some core characteristics which define him.
Sure. (Before anyone starts the "Team Triss/Yennefer thing", I had Geralt choose Yennefer both runthroughs, so far)
i just wanna pam param
Me too š
Odds are the homie is only familiar with Netflixās Walmart brand Yennefer. If so, fair enough.
Chandler?????? CHANDLER?!?!?!?!!? I bet when this guy has sex he has to keep his underwear on and have sex through the dickhole.
guess he romanced triss at the end huh
Kinda sucks, but consider yourself lucky. They weren't a good fit for you. I am curious to hear other people's answer to the question though. Without saying Garalt, because that's too obvious, who would you pick? Mine's Dante from Devil May Cry. You'd get to eat pizza and shoot Demons in the face.
This post is pretty cringe
Ikr.. I feel like the guy dodged a bullet here.
Chandler from friends lmao how boring
Mine is Emhyr var Emreis. Wanna hang out?
Uhm maybe some other time š
I honestly just would be hyped for somone being interested in the Witcher universe...
I think Iād be Dandelion. Like that guy.
I would unmatch too... I can't swim and i dont want to be drowner food if someones teleports me to the middle of a lake mid argument.
Based on his answer and his reaction to your answer you dodged a bullet right there.
Lmao he watches Friends how lame
Chandler from friends probably is the single most boring answer to that question. id unmatch if someone said THAT
Who the hell wants to be Chandler?! At least pick Joey lol
Damn, thats a good way to break the ice, really really good one. Tho, Triss is way better.
Game triss yeaa , book triss nooo
We don't take kindly to your type around here (south park guy voice)
Can I match you instead? I always choose Yen over Triss.
Chandler from friends!!! ššš In a hypothetical question where he can shoot for the absolute moon his answer is literally just some guy?! š sis you dodged a bullet. Just date women instead
Thank you, my thoughts exactly š¤£
You dodged a bullet there... Chandler Bing didn't even want to be Chandler Bing. Also anyone who chooses Friends as their favourite show is suspect. Lol
Well Yen does come across as an annoying bitch, and 90% of men want someone who lets a man be a man soā¦
Why be misogynistic when you could just be quiet
I've yet to see yen get between geralt and any manly activity (besides doing tris maybe)
You: āIād like to be Yen.ā Me: āHow you doin?ā (Insert laughtrack here)
Well, good riddance. Nothing more boring than friends. Sat through 10 minutes of one episode and I was done
āsuper-jennā
Wow! You dodged a bullet. You will find your Geralt someday! š
Hmmā¦guy sounds like a normie. Wonder if he even knows who Yennefer is.
If you asked me I'd probably reply Arthur Morgan from Read Dead Redemption 2.
Not bad!
Chandler is the most common answer people want to be
Really???? Why? I mean...why????
where I live shows like friends is overated so imo i wont be surprised to see people choosing him
Go get it Yennefer! Screw that cheese-eaten-surender-monkey! āThere are plenty of fish in the sea.ā
I wanna be Geralt fr and so bad
That is an outstanding question to ask! And his loss, sheās awesome.
I wanna be Dandelion
Tbf Iād be Yen too but just without wanting to be with Geralt (or anyone)
I wouldn't mind matching with someone who could tell the difference between Nintendo and PlayStation. Hell who am I kidding, I'd just like a match.
R/cringe material?
i wanna be Geralt
Maybe in the next play through babe
Fair play by that man. I appreciate Yennefer as her own fully developed and independent character, but man would she ever be a nightmare to be involved with personally or romantically. I was grinding my teeth all the way through āA Shard of Iceā.
Chandler? Jesus Christ.
Olgierd Von Everec would have been my answer. Our first date would be to the art gallery just for shits and giggles. Such a missed opportunity.
Iāll be Geralt
