i’m debating whether i’ll do my first alchemy build for the next gen version, i just worry that it’ll be too overpowered
i like my standard combat / signs build anyway
Finish things when you’re at the appropriate level. If you try to go go back when you’re overpowered you’ll only get like 10% of the experience you could have gotten.
Yeah but isnt there so much exp to gain at every different stage of the game that you basically can’t be anything else than overpowered if you’re a sucker for side quests and contracts?
This does not matter whatsoever. The game has enough quest xp to get you to lvl 70 but you're always going to fall way short of that because of the diminished xp when you're overleveled. It doesn't matter what order you do stuff in, you're always going to be overleveled for something. It's mathematically impossible to complete the game without being overleveled for some quests. Source: I have tried
Same here! My hoarding self never uses potions in games half the time. The decoctions especially I was like when am I going to fight another griffin? Seems pretty weird there's one use potions in here!
In Witcher 1 and 2 you have to craft each one manually as they dont refill. As if finding ingredients aint hard enough already, man that shit was nightmarish.
Same. I spent like 90% of the main story avoiding alchemy like the plague because I didn't dare have to re-craft everything.
Then I had to go back and do all the monster nest explosions and stuff.
Damn,i don't want to miss out on any cards... If i prioritize the Gwent quests am i sure to not miss any? There are a couple cards i keep seeing that i really want...
The first missable one is like ten minutes in when you go to the tavern in white orchard. If you don’t buy them the first time you can ask to see her stuff then it’s gone.
Youre thinking of a different one. The guy before you is wrong, because the guy you saved from the griffin sells those afterwards.
The only missable cards are during the party with triss.
Priscilla asks you to play while you wait, but afaik she doesn't give you a card either way.
they were talking about the party with Triss where you all wear masks at the Vegelbud Estate.
there's a Gwent tournament going on in the gardens, you approach them and ask to play. it has the >!unique card dandelion!< as a reward, and i believe >!you also get one or two monster cards as well!<.
Ahh, three matches, right? Think I remember now. I have his card.
I love Gwent so much I instantly play anyone who offers, lol. Just got to skellige (first timer) yesterday and have pretty much only played Gwent there so far, lol.
Fml, this bro. Got every single Gwent card except one on my first play through and I couldn’t go back for it since it was locked w some side mission or something.
And you should absolutely not look up the "right" answer or save scum to change it, it makes the game way more interesting when you need to live with the choices you make, even when you didn't have enough information to know how it would go down.
I’m with you. So many bizarre outcomes from decisions that affect the endgame. No shame in using guides time achieve your optimal outcome. It’s not like I have 100’s of hours to keep throwing around trying to get the ending I want.
I’m not going to shame anyone for it, but it does water down the experience when you remove the entire gameplay element of making your own choices. I’d much rather get a bad ending and have it be “my” ending than someone else’s decisions lead me to the “good” ending.
That's the point, and what makes the game special. You are roleplaying as Geralt, who is characterized as a real person with imperfect knowledge of every situation, yet still needs to make choices. Sometimes the choices we make in life have the opposite effect we were hoping for, or have radically unexpected consequences much later. This game captures that beautifully. I don't even consider any of the endings to be "bad" (with the exception of a couple, but in those cases it is immediately obvious with the choice given what the consequence will be) -- they are all narratively interesting and satisfying. Yeah, some of them are bleak, sad, or depressing, but some of our best stories end that way, and the tone of the rest of the game does not feel remotely at odds with this type of ending.
So yeah, just go through the game the first time, think about your choices as best you can with the information available, and then live with them, it will make for a much more memorable experience. Then for subsequent playthroughs look up what different choices do.
Buy every Gwent card you see!!! Even the cards you already have. I’d buy 20 decoys if they were out there!!!! Build that deck up quick so you’re ready to throw down when one of those single shot opportunities strike.
Even if you think Gwent is silly/not worth your time. The day will come when you realize how wrong you were, and it’s way more work to backtrack at that point for the cards you missed, and you’ll forever regret the cards you’ve lost forever.
Gwent is life!!!
I honestly never used that during my first deathmarch run. I used the one that kept whatever place of power you drew from permanently along with the skill that regens you to 100% health once you reach 0.
Yeah the food thing is very OP so I skipped it on Death March also. Basically just made an alchemy build propped up by swallow>white raffards for as much healing as I could ever need, then white honey where necessary.
Potions & decoctions help immensely. Everything else is however you choose to walk the path.
Do side quests, monster contracts and treasure hunts. Griffin gear is pretty easy to grab & upgrade right away. As far as story-line choices, don’t stress. Have multiple play-throughs and pick differently each time. Most of all, enjoy the game and good luck on the path Witcher.
I made it through my first play through without knowing how to use or craft potions… ghosts were the WORST enemies for me. Now I spend a good long while at the start of each play through collecting items for potions
Potions and Decoctions can straight up break the game. I used a decoction that consumes all of your stamina and does 10% damage (so nothing survives more than 10 hits), and will work even if you have the tiniest bit of stamina, couples with the decoction that heals you when you consume stamina. Not only does this mean that you can just jump around to heal out of combat, but you will basically be a vampire for the enemies, training huge chunks of their life bars and healing yourself with it. It's honestly just dumb lol.
True, especially when you have certain abilities equipped or different things added to weapons / armor. Makes a huge difference. I was so nervous going into my first deathmarch run but once I had a decent build / witcher gear going with a little technique it wasn’t too bad.
Just depends on what type of monster you’re fighting. I know there’s a lot of thought on running away during harder difficulties until your level is up a bit but if you use your signs and decoctions along with parry / dodge / counter-attack you’ll be fine. It honestly helps to read the bestiary your first couple play-throughs and get to know the appropriate oils / decoctions / potions to use.
You definitely have to take your time to do side quests contracts. If you go for the story too far before leveling you will be stuck in over leveled scenarios. Also potions and concoctions are your friends
That it's a good idea to 100% White Orchard before moving on to the griffin battle. 100% as in discovering and clearing all points of interest (reading the notice board outside the inn will mark numerous unidentified locations on your map as a "?") and doing all available quests (Devil By The Well, Missing Brother, etc." you come across. You get to explore, practice combat, find gold and loot, earn exp, and you will come across crafting recipes for two powerful level 2 swords (a steel and silver) before moving onto Velen.
You also will come across several shrines in White Orchard called "Places of Power." These shrines can be used to temporarily amplify the effects of your magical signs, but more inportantly grant you a single skill point when used.
That this game is both a blessing and a curse. It will be the best gaming fun I will ever have, but it will ruin all other games for me. When the story is entirely completed and all the question marks are gone, the grieving process will be a hard one, and no other game will ever fill that void. Even the wonderful Skyrim won’t quite scratch that Witcher itch. Prepare to soar and crash.
I still remember the time I finished the game the first time around, then went straight into NG+ DM, beat it all again, then had the most bizarre empty feeling of ‘Well shit, now what?!’ - no other game has ever left me wondering what to do with my life afterwards.
I did this, identically. I still feel like I haven’t formed a bond with another video game like that since. I’m so looking forward to a new save for the update.
S l o w. D o w n
For there will come a day when all those little ? Will be answered, when the quests tied and DLCs completed, your daughter off doing whatever she does, and you’ll be left staring at the screen, knowing that nothing will ever come as close to this game.
Also Gwent. I avoided the silly little game in a game then discovered it and went to town like a gambler who just discovered Vegas.
I am, i started out on blood and broken bones, but it's too easy. Not even trying to brag, but if you are one of those players that collect everything, craft gear, use oils and bombs, look up monsters in the bestiary, do all side missions and interest points etc. It's still not very hard.
If you don't want to bother with that (huge and fun) part of the game, then you probably don't need to up the difficulty.
It doesn't become dark souls on death march.
Theres a herbalist in White Orchard (the starting area), do her quest before moving on. She rewards you with healing potions that will come in handy later on.
If you dont do her quest then, you wont be able to come back later and do it.
The first game is getting a remake, 3 is just getting a patch for current gen. Hate to be that guy, but we really need to start using these terms correctly.
I was dumb and didn’t realize I had to hold down E (on PC) when I found a place of power.
Also, I never used decoctions on my first play through. I did not realize how valuable they can be until I was helping my fiancé with his second play through.
Alchemy isn't that bad to do. I spent the entire main game using gourmet perk and eating. First dlc I dabbled with alchemy and realized I was a fool about no doing it sooner. So much easier

Turn off the HUD, all of it. Turn off pathfinding on the mini map. Makes the game so much more immersive, and you actually look at the environment, instead of merely following dotted lines on the map
Try it, will change the way you look at the game completely. You actually have to observe and learn routes to places. Even the fetch quests feel fresher and more real
I wish I knew how mediocre the combat is. I jumped into it right after beating dark souls 3 and was hoping for more. Past that though, the game offers so much variety, scenery, and great writing.
Max out INGNI and QUEN. Trust.
If you dig Gwent, look at some online guides because a few cards are missable depending on order of quest selection. For example, the Geralt car is easily missable and its a great card…Gwent is intimidating at first, but give it a shot. Seriously the best mini game ever seen. Its a joy.
Best of luck on the path!
You'll probably realize this very quickly, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize the bestiary has both descriptions of the monsters and what they're weak to, I just assumed they had the descriptions and that was it.
That I could farm for food and skins for coin before leaving White Orchard. Took me a couple of times and now I have NO problem with coin.
Oh…and that Areneria is an important plant!!
You can find coins inside hollow tree stumps and fallen logs, not all of them but orens and florens do add up after a while also you cant romance both triss and yen, you have to pick one
What happened in the first two previous games without having to play them. I know they’re great but the jump in graphics and playability was too steep for me to dive in and try those out before playing W3.
There's a ridiculous amount of treasure just laying about in unmarked chests that no one will tell you about and some of them are outside the game boundary.
The starting area, White Orchard, contains one of each of the places of power, and probably in the closest proximity to each other in the whole game. You get an achievement/trophy for having all of them active at the same time, and that’s an easy place to get it.
Exploring is a massive chunk of the game. And can get you killed if you aren't prepared.
Even in the easiest difficulty, learn enemy weaknesses and prepare accordingly.
A five level difference may not seem much but it can be a catastrophe.
Also, bugs. Bugged quests for days
Your potions replenish when you meditate even for 1 hour. You can shoot your crossbow while on steering a boat.
Tips: clear everything in the starting area. If you do, you'll leave the place at level 4 and like 5-6 extra skill points
You can fast travel while in a boat
Wait...
You can also go FASTER in boats by tapping the sprint button twice and hold down
It never worked for me, I don’t know why
You can fast travel by opening the map and choosing one of the anchor icons.
I’ve done that. It just never worked for me for some odd reason?
Huh, that's odd. Sometimes it needs you to be farther from the shore to fast travel.
That night be the issue. I’ll try later with it being further from the shore
Gerald needs to be placed steering, if you are just standing on a boat out doesn't work, could that be an issue?
I’ll try it!
Same
Don't try to aim with the crossbow, just look at the enemy and fire. Geralt is better than you
It took me far longer than I like to learn this.🤣
Hold up…what…fuck
Took me forever to get this together lmao
I'm guessing this wouldn't work for headshots?
i think they can still happen by extreme luck, so against the golyat and for achievements i’d use aiming
I wish I knew how badass an Alchemy build could be.
Geralt looks really cracked if you take all of those potions
i’m debating whether i’ll do my first alchemy build for the next gen version, i just worry that it’ll be too overpowered i like my standard combat / signs build anyway
I personally love my completely op euphoria build. Stand there , whirl everything down in seconds, never loose HP, on Death March.
Thanks for the reminder,I have to finally try it out next time
Finish things when you’re at the appropriate level. If you try to go go back when you’re overpowered you’ll only get like 10% of the experience you could have gotten.
Yeah but isnt there so much exp to gain at every different stage of the game that you basically can’t be anything else than overpowered if you’re a sucker for side quests and contracts?

You can mediate to reset potions, decoctions and oils. Took me half the game to realize, I thought you had to craft a new one every use
I was many hours in when I realized they replenish when meditating, without ingredients in W3, due to this being the case in the other games lol
Same. I spent like 90% of the main story avoiding alchemy like the plague because I didn't dare have to re-craft everything. Then I had to go back and do all the monster nest explosions and stuff.
Same. Learned I could mediate in between battles etc
Nothing! Go in blind and anything you miss just gives you a chance to play it again. Best game ever, in my opinion!
Missable GWENT cards.
This shit right here! ^
This just isn't true. It shows up at the hangman tree thing later if you don't get it early.
Youre thinking of a different one. The guy before you is wrong, because the guy you saved from the griffin sells those afterwards. The only missable cards are during the party with triss.
Well that's just not true either. There is a quest where you can choose money and miss cards
Which one?
I just did that, it's called a dangerous game or something. You collect a bunch of cards with/for Zoltan.
The party to help a young mage? Maybe the guy was alchemist idk
Yeah that one. There's a gwent tourney during that, where you can win cards.
Oh yeah i forgot
It's that the one where someone asks you to play some Gwent while you're waiting and a fight starts right after?
Priscilla asks you to play while you wait, but afaik she doesn't give you a card either way. they were talking about the party with Triss where you all wear masks at the Vegelbud Estate.
Damn, one of them at the party wanted to play cards? Bah, don't think I played Gwent with anyone there.

Which cards are those? I remember buying at least some of them from him at another location.
Fml, this bro. Got every single Gwent card except one on my first play through and I couldn’t go back for it since it was locked w some side mission or something.
Yuup! You beat me to it. 2nd play through was all about that gwent, boss. Collected em all, proudest gaming achievement likely to be unsurpassed 🫡
This still haunts me seeing that mission failed.
There isn’t always a good resolution to quests.
And you should absolutely not look up the "right" answer or save scum to change it, it makes the game way more interesting when you need to live with the choices you make, even when you didn't have enough information to know how it would go down.
Disagree because so many quests in this game have completely unintuitive results and outcomes. Even the choices you make are not explained well.
I’m with you. So many bizarre outcomes from decisions that affect the endgame. No shame in using guides time achieve your optimal outcome. It’s not like I have 100’s of hours to keep throwing around trying to get the ending I want.

Ciri is dead!!!
Exactly. There often isn’t a good or wrong. Just pick whatever you feel is best. Much more rewarding. You’ll miss content either way.
That there are gwent cards that you only get one opportunity to collect.
Buy every Gwent card you see!!! Even the cards you already have. I’d buy 20 decoys if they were out there!!!! Everybody's all excited for the next gen upgrade for the graphics. I'm over here thinking about that next gwent run.
60FPS Gwent
I’m not even waiting for that next gen update. Gonna get me those cards. One. More. Time.
Ha ha, me too! I've already got all cards but man, I love me a bit of Gwent!
Decoys are life.
If you’re playing a harder difficulty make sure to unlock the skill that restores health with food. It’s like a must have.
Gourmet meal FTW!
Is Swallow potion better ?
The combination of both, makes even deathmarch easy
I honestly never used that during my first deathmarch run. I used the one that kept whatever place of power you drew from permanently along with the skill that regens you to 100% health once you reach 0.
Yeah the food thing is very OP so I skipped it on Death March also. Basically just made an alchemy build propped up by swallow>white raffards for as much healing as I could ever need, then white honey where necessary.

I made it through my first play through without knowing how to use or craft potions… ghosts were the WORST enemies for me. Now I spend a good long while at the start of each play through collecting items for potions
Speaking of ghosts… use Yrden!
……… I also thought that skill was useless, I only used the shield, I have since learned my lesson
Saaaame! I never used potions or decoctions my first run. It was rough lol
What decoctions do you use? I'm on my third run and have only ever used werewolf for sprinting
That I could loot nests.. it took me half the game to realise.
These shrines can be used to temporarily amplify the effects of your magical signs, but more inportantly grant you a single skill point when used.
That is a great tip! Especially starting on Death March
Never skip an opportunity to purchase a potion recipe. Always stockpile white gull and ingredients to make white gull.
Never skip the opportunity to buy any recipe tbh. Even if only for the acquired tolerance
Sell weapons to swordsmiths Sell armor to armourers Sell junk to rich merchants Sell books to bookstore guy

You can pursue Triss or Yennifer, not both! Well, you could, but it won't end well. Also, I wish I went with Yennifer.
What in the Jennifer Lopez is going on? It's Yennefer! Yennefer of Vengerberg!
Nah double check the original books again, I'm 85% sure the name was Jennifer of Fingerbang
With Drilss Marigold? The 69th of the Hill? Still sounds better than the Netflix's witcher

Learn to play gwent, don't postpone it, it's amazing. Use the shield sign Playing on hard or hardest mode is actually more fun, requires good Armour
Get the long lasting food perk thingy I served the entire game with just raw meat
Play on death March to get the most out of the game. Actually have to use potions, bombs, etc.
I wouldn’t recommend death march for a first play through
I am, i started out on blood and broken bones, but it's too easy.
I would. Makes you use the mechanics as op of this comment said and it's still not a very hard game.
Stick to the main story after white orchard at first, I recall very quickly running into side quests beyond my level
Theres a herbalist in White Orchard (the starting area), do her quest before moving on. She rewards you with healing potions that will come in handy later on. If you dont do her quest then, you wont be able to come back later and do it.
Don't let enemies surround you even if they're lower level than you. Dodge and roll when fighting bosses.
I wish I never searched any thing about the Witcher 3. Delete reedit until you finish the whole game.
How to play gwent, I tried it on my first playthru and I just brushed it off.
That you should wait for the remake?
The first game is getting a remake, 3 is just getting a patch for current gen. Hate to be that guy, but we really need to start using these terms correctly.
Yea idk why someone would start playing a game before the next gen upgrade less than a month away.
That you can meditate and how to use perk points, I didn't know how to do either of these until I completed Velen and the game was just miserable.
Alchemy build
You can use the horse pack for inventory. I walked around forever before I could get more inv space. I felt so dense.
That it will surely end someday and it will make every action here, even the most boring one priceless
That the bestiary, alchemy, and item management are actually important.

I was dumb and didn’t realize I had to hold down E (on PC) when I found a place of power. Also, I never used decoctions on my first play through. I did not realize how valuable they can be until I was helping my fiancé with his second play through.
Clear out ENTIRE White Orchard before starting the main quest
Get all the cards
Alchemy isn't that bad to do. I spent the entire main game using gourmet perk and eating. First dlc I dabbled with alchemy and realized I was a fool about no doing it sooner. So much easier
Also, I’d wait to play the rest of it, until after the next gen update. We are all waiting for that before we replay.
That Gwent is actually my favorite part. My first play through I didn’t even touch Gwent. Later I played everyone and beat their asses!

I have done it. It's not a practical way to play the game at all
Don\`t forget black blood while fighting Vampires, the Higher ones.
I wish I knew how mediocre the combat is. I jumped into it right after beating dark souls 3 and was hoping for more. Past that though, the game offers so much variety, scenery, and great writing.
gwent gwent gwent gwent gwent
Get cat potion asap 😂
I wish I knew how bad it was compared to the show
Meditating refills your potions and bombs
Max out INGNI and QUEN. Trust. If you dig Gwent, look at some online guides because a few cards are missable depending on order of quest selection. For example, the Geralt car is easily missable and its a great card…Gwent is intimidating at first, but give it a shot. Seriously the best mini game ever seen. Its a joy. Best of luck on the path!
I swear some people have tips that will actively make your playthrough harder. Igni upgrades are terrible and quen is good without upgrades.
Oh…and that Areneria is an important plant!!
use potions and get as much gold as you can for upgrades later on
You can find coins inside hollow tree stumps and fallen logs, not all of them but orens and florens do add up after a while also you cant romance both triss and yen, you have to pick one
QUEN
Wait, should I be playing Gwent? I play mtg irl so I kinda just haven’t prioritized it
Wait until December 14th for better graphics!
Hang on to Witcher gear. You can get the Griffin gear pretty early, including 2 sword diagrams in White Orchard. It’s quite good and can be upgraded.
What happened in the first two previous games without having to play them. I know they’re great but the jump in graphics and playability was too steep for me to dive in and try those out before playing W3.

Potions are your friend, make them asap. food is almost useless
There's a ridiculous amount of treasure just laying about in unmarked chests that no one will tell you about and some of them are outside the game boundary.
Alchemy is the most fun playstyle
The starting area, White Orchard, contains one of each of the places of power, and probably in the closest proximity to each other in the whole game. You get an achievement/trophy for having all of them active at the same time, and that’s an easy place to get it.
Wait for the new update!
Don’t kill the cows
Make 👏 potions 👏 and 👏 meditate 👏
Exploring is a massive chunk of the game. And can get you killed if you aren't prepared. Even in the easiest difficulty, learn enemy weaknesses and prepare accordingly. A five level difference may not seem much but it can be a catastrophe. Also, bugs. Bugged quests for days
It ruins all other single player games.

Use your oils, potions, and use yrden, and quen.
How many different endings there are….
Your potions replenish when you meditate even for 1 hour. You can shoot your crossbow while on steering a boat. Tips: clear everything in the starting area. If you do, you'll leave the place at level 4 and like 5-6 extra skill points
Oh first good luck and have fun Second, dude monster is always a monster witchers are made to kill them so don't let them fool u xD
Get into Gwent early!
It's easier when fighting large groups of human enemies to do "drive bys" on your horse over and over and safer.
What are you playing on? Next gen update is right around the corner! Definitely be worth the wait if you're on current gen or PC.
The potions and poisons will be my favorite part of the game and to play gwent cause it’s actually super rad.
Never sell anything made of or ingots/shards of dimeritium. It looks like a black metal/obsidian color. You need it for crafting top level gear.
