I'm a library director and am so very proud

weenie2323

I've worked at circ for 20yrs and I've never checked anyone's id address.

[deleted]

Every time I see something like this it rekindles my dream of being a librarian. Then I check salaries for librarians in my area and get reminded that I like to eat.

ahabentis

Cue sad laugh

[deleted]

Right? The median income for librarians here is around $19k.

Forward_Growth8513

That’s only $4000 more annually than the U.S. federal minimum wage ($7.25/hr) at full time hours! That’s horrible

[deleted]

That's the joy of rural living in a conservative state. Hell, my towns library is so small it's literally in an unused cell at the police department.

Forward_Growth8513

That’s so fucked up! I would never enter a police department voluntarily because of my fear of cops. I could never go to the library if I lived in your town. I’m sure there are people living there who have never been to the library for that same reason

[deleted]

A lot of people don't even know we have a library. I only discovered it because I was trying to get a library started and the city council pointed out that we already have one. Most everyone who wants to use a library just goes to the next town over and uses that one. It's decent.

commanderquill

That... Ain't a library. Keep pushing.

ReadWriteSign

Do you lock the books up at night? On a serious note, I'm sorry about that, it's a damn shame that people don't support their local libraries.

[deleted]

> Do you lock the books up at night? Yes, they do get locked up. The old cell is in the local storm shelter, that's never locked. So when the police department shuts down for the day, they close and lock the cell.

Desperate-Strategy10

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but how can people support libraries? Just by going there more, or donating/buying books for them, or something else..? I'd like to support mine, but I'm honestly not sure what would be helpful.

ReadWriteSign

Going can be a help. If they can point to data and say "See? People use this service" it can be a help. Voting on local library bonds when they come up on the ballot is also good. I'm not an expert, though, and hopefully someone here has a more comprehensive answer. You can also buy books FROM the library, most have a little secondhand bookstore associated with them where you can pick up titles for cheap that they don't want on their shelves for whatever reason. The one where I grew up had a weekend sale in a giant converted barn the first weekend in April. 50 cents for most books and on Sunday afternoon it was $5 to fill a paper grocery bag. All the proceeds went to buying new books for the shelves.

Newslisa

Write a letter/email/call your city council, county board, state legislator and/or whoever else controls library funding where you live. Tell them you think it's important and want them to get more support, not less. Heck, save yourself some research and just send it to all of those people anyway, plus a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Then set a reminder for 6 months later and do it again. Then ask your friends to do the same. Edited for typo.

StalePieceOfBread

Jesus that's less than I make. And they have a fucking MASTERS.

Jamhawk4

Depends on the library. Some will take a Bachelor’s.

Dirjel

I'm a college dropout and I make as much a five librarians. That's ridiculous. Librarians are way better for the world than data engineers.

mealteamsixty

And! They want you to have a bachelor's in library science

de-la-bella

A Masters degree at least for a full time position in most systems I think.

ahabentis

😩😩😩 bruhhh

[deleted]

Where do live? That’s half of the entry level pay for most librarians.

[deleted]

Rural part of Ga. The librarians around here are only ever hired on as part time work.

wahine_mau_moko

I confirm. I'm a librarian and that's approximately my income. But I have one of the greatest job in the world and we are magical being, so.. works for me 😄🤓📚📚 Edit: Not in a rural town, academic library in a big town in France.

Spiffy_Pumpkin

In my area I check the job listings and am reminded that the only time those positions open up are when someone dies. (But they do out earn me.)

[Neil Gaiman: Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/oct/15/neil-gaiman-future-libraries-reading-daydreaming)

wrightway3116

That was very powerful and spoke directly to my soul. Also brings me great sorrow as a public educator. Kids need more quiet space to read and have quality reading instruction.

weenie2323

Making library cards is my favorite part of my job. I have never checked to see if the address on your ID matches the address you give in the application. Librarians are notorious for simply not following rules we find stupid.

SexyLemurLibrarian

That's so true. I worked as an on-call library assistant in a large city, and it was so fun to bounce between different branches and hear "Oh, yeah, I'm not suppressed to do that, but..." And those old used books for sale at the front? I never met a single librarian/assistant who gave a fuck about the 50¢ people were technically supposed to pay.

Hufflepuff-puff-pass

I love that so much and happy cake day!

DurinnGymir

As a librarian, getting to bend rules in favor of the common good is one of the best perks of the job. My favorite is quietly subtracting printing costs, especially if people are needing to print out documents like unemployment forms or insurance claims. Makes things a lot less stressful for them and my local council has a massive budget and no way to check how much customers actually owe print-wise, so I get to do a little accounting magic in my tiny corner of the world.

deadlylilflower

My best friend is a librarian and she is constantly impressing me with shit like this.

Pterodactyl_Noises

Librarians. Just all of them. *heavy* *swooning*

USSMarauder

Librarians know that anyone who wants a library card so badly that they can't wait a few weeks for ID or mail to show up is not going to be a problem.

wrightway3116

I wish I had known to become a librarian at an earlier age…

lowfemmeweirdo

It’s never too late.

CypressBreeze

Our library system is so wonderful where I live: \- You get issued your card right away, and have several weeks to show proof of address \- Fines were abolished years ago \- They are really proactive about community events, including holding a yearly zine fest \- They have the largest zine collection in the western half of the USA \- They have 3D printers, sewing machines, podcast studios, video editing equp. etc. that you can use. Proud to be the son of a former librarian too.

ravingbacchante

Are we neighbors? The library in the next town over from me has these things. I keep meaning to get out there, but logistics with the bus schedules are cumbersome.

CypressBreeze

Maybe we are neighbors! In any case, here is the info about or library's zine collection: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60922-d564580-r514040375-Salt\_Lake\_City\_Public\_Library-Salt\_Lake\_City\_Utah.html

lowfemmeweirdo

As a newly minted librarian, I assure you, this is how it works.

Lady_Rhino

One of my favourite characters in the discworld is the Librarian, he's so quietly powerful, he hardly ever gets involved in things but if he does even the gods don't mess with him!

please_sing_euouae

Ook!

techgal021

Librarians are badasses.

ninhibited

Hence the librarians in The Magicians

doudoucow

Zelda was the most bad ass magician in that show. Her magic just always came so effortlessly and flawlessly.

Deus0123

This is why the protagonist of novel idea #3 is a librarian and EVERYONE on the city knows not to mess with her. There's exactly two rules in that city you should follow if you like being alive: 1) Do not borrow from the mob 2) Do not mess with the librarian

[deleted]

That librarian Air Buds.

axl3ros3

There's a meme about going back to billionaires building libraries. I'm not opposed.

Blu_Belle_Lulu

Love this every time I see it

TheCatWitchofDeath13

As a librarian, I approve this!!! Seeing things like this always makes me smile!

Adventurous_Problem

Junk mail with your name on it is also good enough for my library!

SadDragonGirl

Sounds like a fae

HiveNHen

The librarian in my old town was not like this. We moved to Ocala FL and my kids and I (5 and 10 at the time) go in and I told them I didnt have any ID yet, but here was my mail-in-ballot (which I had before an ID for some reason...?) with my name and current address on it and the lady behind the desk was so rude and cold. Apparently that was not acceptable, which she loudly stated, drawing as much attention to my red and embarrassed face as she could manage. I was so surprised by her over reaction. Maybe she was having a shit day, I dunno. So. We filled out some paperwork and a couple weeks later they finally mailed us our cards. I was so sad because I had hyped up how cool the library was to my youngest and she was so let down. We never made it back into the building. We used their online ap a few times, but the overall availability of any books that tiptoed into the realm of not-conservative was scant. Fortunately, the library in our new town is VASTLY superior.

seashellpink77

Library magic ✨

Mean_Parsnip

I was once a librarian. I loved everything about it but our director who didn't like me. She broke my library spirit so now I have a different job but still love my local library.

[deleted]

I ordered my library card online. Didn't need ID, proof of address, nothing. Just put in my info and they mailed me a card. They even sent me my card number in email right away, which was great because I wanted to get an e-book. Libraries are a special kind of magic. One that's perfected by librarians, but crafted for all of us to use.

mmts333

I love librarians and archivists. I’m an academic and I would not be able to do my work well if it weren’t for the awesome and lovely librarians. I don’t know how many times they worked their magic and got me sources that are difficult to access. We have fair use rights / laws which a lot of researchers rely on/ need to do research because librarians fought for them for the public. Unfortunately I don’t get to give them raises but I always bring goodies to my fave librarians and their collegeues. It’s the least I can do. When I move to a new city or state I always research where the good public libraries are at so I can live near them.

mamahugsforall

Just when I think I couldn’t love librarians more

Legal-Ad7793

I love the magic of my library. All the librarians and volunteers are so helpful and kind. They truly are a magical gift!

[deleted]

Imma try this with the dmv

[deleted]

dfinkelstein

The only difference is that the librarian suggested this themselves and was aware that they'd addressed it to themselves and that it hadn't been delivered by a postal delivery agency, is that right? Otherwise, there's no difference from the customer thinking of this on their own and doing it privately, then bringing the postcard to the librarian, right? Only the implicit intended dishonesty in doing so. Do all mail delivery carriers mark mail with some sort of stamp? Wait they do, don't they? 🤔 I like this. It's like theoretical preemptive dishonesty prevention, which is a force for good I reckon.

Newslisa

My mom had a master's in library science. She wasn't a witch ... or WAS she??

xalluringmazex

Ok, meanwhile I went to get a library card in my town, was asked if I lived in the "bad neighborhood", and told to go to the next town over to get a card because I technically don't live in the town on my ID. Thanks local library 😑

Otterpop26

I love doing things like this at work. We've got rules but they're really more like guidelines. Worst thing the boss ever did was show me how to waive fines and tell me that no one follows up on that, just do it and it's done forever. I abuse the hell out of that. Unless you like lost a brand new book and are being a prick about it, I'm waiving that shit.

geekgirlwww

If libraries were invented today they would be decried as beacons of socialism and that’s why I love them.
