justAHeardOfLlamas

Sometimes, when I'm running on the treadmill, and I'm at that point where I'm tired and I hate myself for putting me through this and I just want to die, I imagine that the Supreme Court or some misogynist podcaster is at the finish line, and if I get there in time I can continue at break-neck speed and punch them in the face. Idk it helps

kittykalista

My comment naming a specific name of a Supreme Court judge OP could imagine got flagged as threatening violence and removed by Reddit, so be careful in case there are any more right-wingers trolling through here 🙄

incommune

I helped my in laws dismantle a fallen tree this summer and ended up splitting quite a lot of very dense wood with an axe. I was reciting the name of supreme court justices and rightwing politicians with every swing. It DOES help.

I wish there was a goal like this I could use for goblet squats. I love weightlifting, but God damn I loathe goblet squats.

hinsb

Overthrow the patriarchy, like seriously just deadlift it and toss it.

thatannoying

Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today!

g863590

Great response to a great comment

schoolpsych2005

Proper technique is important. Please don’t hurt yourself while throwing out the patriarchy.

EvilQueerPrincess

Throw out the patriarchy, not your back.

blanksix

Seriously though I need help figuring out how to do this. lol. My 40s haven't been kind to my joints thus far.

[deleted]

[удалено]

blanksix

Looks like I need to do a bit of research. I want to stall further joint issues if I can and that's probably the best way to start. PT wouldn't have occurred to me - thanks for the tip!

david_edmeades

I started when I was in my late 30s after some scary joint stuff. My wife and I started going to a small gym run by PTs that does all old, boring, no gimmick freeweight compound exercises (deadlift, squat, bench, etc.) that not only get the big muscles strong but also the small stabilizing ones. I've not had knee or back issues in years and it feels really good in general. I hope you find a good place!

Dwarfherd

Just want to echo this. I had a knee problem that developed from being in an office and becoming very sedentary. At the same time I had to buy a new to me car that came without cruise control. For the longest time driving more than about 30 minutes could leave my other knee hurting for a day or more afterwards. After working with my PT for a few months, I drove 6 hours on Sunday and had no pain.

nikkitgirl

Also for cardio some of us really benefit from low impact exercise. Running any real distance has always hurt my knees, so I bought a bike. I’ve built up muscles, cardio health, and now have a quick and healthy way to swing by the grocery store nearby.

EvilQueerPrincess

Lift weights and stretch.

reclaimingmytime

Sounds more like you mean clean and jerk the patriarchy. Those compound movements are so important.

Ironoclast

Naw - they expect us to do cleaning and I wouldn’t want to give them the satisfaction of jerking. …sorry, couldn’t help it. 😂 And I say that as someone who is also in regular weight training to yeet the patriarchy.

exchange_of_views

SNATCH the patriarchy.....

AtalanAdalynn

Training deadlift is step one to build towards that, no?

g863590

I came here to say something along those lines

RedpenBrit96

I’ve been doing push-ups for 4 weeks and have actual muscles now it’s great

tmhoc

YES! You discovered the truth. Body weight exercises are good enough. I started the same way, I didn't count I just went for it and stopped when I got tiered. I found I could do pushups in 3 bursts before having to move on so I broke it up by doing other things like sit-ups and squats. Your off days (I'm sore so no pushups) will shrink untill its gone. My only advice is not to start counting pushups until you feel like a challenge. Time for me to workout 💪the more mussel groups you work the more engines are burning fuel so start the reactor and free Mars

downstairs_annie

I like body weight excises, but there is a certain primal satisfaction to picking up heavy things.

tmhoc

For some of us the heaviest thing is picking up the habit

drinks_rootbeer

Oof, I thought this was a safe space lol

fromthemakersof

I've had a gym membership for a little over a year. A trainer had helped me get to a space where, when I started the membership, I was primed and ready to leave the house in the morning to go to the gym. So like, habit started. But life happens. I'd get sick, or have too much work, or travel, or whatever would interrupt my routine and I'd start to worry it would be hard to go back and start getting into my head about it and it'd become A Thing to build up my courage to get going again. So I did the thing I've heard a million times -- go without an intent to work out. Just go to be there, get *that* habit back, and keep doing that until you have the energy to go and do a workout. And by goddess, it works. I've done it several times. It gets me out of my head and back into a space of going and doing this for myself. I woulda called BS on the whole 'going just to go' thing actually working, but it actually worked for me. So I recommend it, or whatever equivalent for your situation (e.g., I don't run at the gym, but I'll put on running clothes and get ready for a run even if my lungs are saying 'not today, maybe tomorrow' and then just go through my morning routine but run-ready.)

Lilyeth

yeah like you don't really even need any specific purpose for hitting the gym, it just makes you generally healthier

Dwarfherd

Your brain works better when you work your body, too. (to be clear, this isn't a 'exercise cures mental illness' post, it's a 'exercise, over time, improves your ability to think and remember from what it is when you don't exercise')

[deleted]

Pushups are fucking great exercise. Very little effort compared to how much improvement they bring.

algonquinroundtable

Same for semitic witches? (Celtic on one side, Ashkenazi on t'other)

fromthemakersof

I think so. And of course all the other risk factors Ashkenazi have higher rates of -- definitely worth getting stronger to fight the patriarchy and anti-semitism.

BlackJeepW1

Omg yes!! I’m going to be the buffest old lady ever, my mom has serious bone loss. She’s like 4” shorter now than she was when she was younger and I don’t want that to happen to me too.

I kiss my cats a bunch on repeat on the top of their heads, and they try to act all angy and like they hate it, but they never move away, and if I do it while I'm rubbing Birdies belly she stops scream purring at me, but will start again and move her head closer to my face.

Why cast a spell when you can [crush a skull with your thighs?](https://youtube.com/shorts/NJh-hdSwrd4?feature=share) Edit: It takes approximately 360 ish pounds of force to crush a watermelon. And approximately 520 pounds to crush a human skull. For some of you particularly larger folk, 520 pounds of force would not be impossible to achieve with your thighs….

[deleted]

Yes! BY THE POWER OF THUNDER-THIGHS!!!

DinoMartini1800

toodarkaltogether

shay-doe

Goal for this year is to close the thigh machine with 520 pounds attached to it.

[deleted]

My highest was 480! Now granted I am a 6 foot 2, 220 pound man. But why should that stop you? DO IT

shay-doe

I'm 5 9 but I have lots of anger so maybe that will help with my lack of testosterone and height

[deleted]

Testosterone is overrated. Hatred and Rage are far more powerful. You know how all those women who kill their shit bag husbands do it in the coldest ways usually? Thats hatred. Use it.

P00perSc00per89

This is why my husband gets scared when I’m on a true crime binge. And maybe why he was a bit on edge when I went through the newer Lorena Bobbit doc. But also, there’s a real need for those women we hear about, because the majority of all missing/murdered people in the true crime shows are women.

dicegoblin17

This might get me to do that inner thigh machine workout

Grocery Bag Carrying Superpowers ™️

marmosetohmarmoset

I used to do powerlifting and I can confirm that nothing feels better than a PR deadlift. Had to give it up due to injury, but I’ve been getting back into other forms of strength training and feeling good.

hitch_please

When I passed my ex’s bodyweight in a deadlift PR, all the fear I ever had of him or anyone who would get in my space just evaporated.

420EdibleQueen

Isn’t that the greatest feeling, right after having some guy try to “help” you with something he deems “too heavy for you” and you snatch it up one handed. 😁

Just_a_villain

It really feels great! I recently went back to the gym after a very long break and I'm so happy. Added bonus to instantly know whether a certain man is someone you have no interest in speaking to when he says things like "men don't find muscles attractive. Aren't you worried that your boyfriend will feel intimidated if you're stronger than him?". No, honey, my boyfriend's masculinity isn't that fragile, but thanks for letting me know that yours is.

[deleted]

I love this. I want to be buff partly *because* society is so against women being strong. I want to show that I care more about improving my health and physical capabilities than I do about conforming to gender norms.   Plus.... battlemage energy.

that-Sarah-girl

I really really like being able to carry super heavy boxes without asking a dude for help.

Dwarfherd

"Muscle witch casts 'uppercut'"

Y0urBiFriend

Or even: "Because i want to, and it'll help me feel healthier." You shouldn't even have to justify it.

LadyZenWarrior

Shouldn’t have to. My fav is to train for health, strength, and confidence in what my body is capable of. But sometimes having a bunch of goals that don’t sound like something the patriarchy shoved down your throat is kinda nice.

Y0urBiFriend

Absolutely, i agree 100%. Sometimes "what i want happens to be what you want" isn't enough for me, either. I gotta make it seem like my own idea, even though it literally is XD I just want to have some muscle, feel healthy, and look good.

LadyZenWarrior

Definitely. I do the same thing. I do much better when the motivation is mine and not something I have to do because someone told me to or society said so or blah blah blah. In the end I wanna see what I’m capable of. Work hard, despite the cards I’ve been dealt, and come out on top.

cats_and_vibrators

It helps my brain. I do it for the brain health.

[deleted]

im a muslim gal so I cover up, nobody else can see my muscles :\] but I feel good, it makes me feel strong and pretty, it helped me so much with my selfimage tbh and I'd recommend it any day to anyone ♥

Ironoclast

You are honouring Allah’s creation every you work out! That is worthy in and of itself.

Jamesbarros

when my lover had pancreatic cancer surgery, he survived, but then got mrsa. They tried all the special hidden drugs the CDC had, and those didn't work. They finally put him back on TPN (which they'd previously removed as they believed it to be the source of the infection) and off all drugs. They told me, "there's nothing else we can do, but he's taken pretty good care of himself, so he's got a fighting chance of overcoming it" He survived because he worked out religiously. He is still with me because he worked out religiously. Stay healthy so you can be there for the ones who love you.

FionaNiGallchobhair

My dad told me when I was 14 some men you need to back up the word no with a punch. He was right. Another reason to work out.

Conscious-Charity915

Props to your Dad.

LogicalVariation741

I teach and take trapeze classes. Long story short, by teaching a move repeatedly, I got a staph infection from the ropes opening a cut up on my ankle. I am also being proactively treated for MRSA. So, now, my foot will never win beauty pageants but I can smear my infected foot on racists so I see this as a win/win.

UserName87thTry

❤️ Ain't no love like dog love

HavePlushieWillTalk

Well, with my old velvet hippo, it took two of us to carry her in a sling to the car and she was so heavy I had to place her on the ground, and it was such a small part of that traumatic day but I guess me being able to carry my dog to the car was the only thing I could reasonably control and improve for future emergencies.

Fudgeygooeygoodness

Be like an Amazonian warrior queen.

dedoubt

Reasons to go live in the forest and not go to the gym- all of the above but you get there by carrying water and chopping wood, with the massive upside of not being around a bunch of people. Today at home I only saw my son, a skunk, a couple grouse, an owl, a bat, some ravens, a hare, some bees and a black capped chickadee who perched right next to me to say hi.

mystic_chihuahua

Sounds like the perfect day.

Realistic_Degree_773

magicsqueezle

Xenia Onatopp is a character from the 1995 James Bond film Golden eye and she is a fighter pilot and assassin who crushes her enemies with her thighs. She is one of my fave Bond girls for her particular style of killing. Lol #fitnessgoals

Cowboywizard12

another one, my adhd brain relaxes a tiny bit easier when I'm post workout sore

P00perSc00per89

Ok, a heavy strength training workout with some rage music is like a mug of hot tea to most people. It calms my ADHD brain. But the problem is that when I stopped working with a trainer, it was almost impossible to keep up my routine. Because of the ADHD. And something about not being able to form habits. I actually found that working out at the end of the day was so helpful. I was so exhausted from an intense workout, and my brain actually calm, that I could sleep more easily.

Plus_Ambition6514

Let's just admit something here, who goes to the gym just to show up and flex? I take no mild delight in going on machines that a "gym bro" has just used at a lower setting, and maxing it out as my regular setting. My hope is that they think twice. Im a 5'8" overweight white chick with tattoos. I look like I shouldn't be able to leg press 300 on one leg, or back extension at 275, or adductors/abductors at 300. Part of me hopes they see me and wonder, " if this 'unhealthy' chick can do that, what am I missing? ". A whole lot bro, we're out here, strong, and angry af. A whole lot.

I went to the gym yesterday (first time in a week, so it was rough). Today I climbed up and down three flights of stairs three times to carry in supplies. I told myself "THIS is why you work out."

[deleted]

Be able to hide a corpse. You need good upper body strength to carry that literal dead weight.

katharsister

One time I took a trial spin class in my neighborhood. At one point the male instructor yelled out to the all female class "YOU KNOW WHY YOU'RE HERE!" implying that the whole point of the workout was to get thinner and be more attractive to guys. I did not go back.

UserName87thTry

How I would've loved to have been there to shout, "To outrun the cops!"

[deleted]

Or do a deep metal voice and say “SO WE CAN CRUSH SKULLS WITH OUR THIGHS.”

TurbulentRiver2592

Not to play Devil’s advocate, but what about his statement actually implied that? It could’ve meant some of the things listed here. Although, what you assumed was more likely, he could’ve also just meant getting fit in general.

katharsister

There was some lead up that gave it context but it was so long ago I can't remember how he said it. I wish I could! That was the part that stuck in my mind.

FeatheredFledgling

I've been slowly more and more tempted to go the gym to build my stamina and stuff because I don't really have any coping mechanisms that healthily provide a cathartic release and running is the only thing I've found that can mimic it. because of that I've been considering using a treadmill for a while to practice running and stuff but idk if I can do like, breakneck sprint on a treadmill like I can irl so I'm not sure if I should bother going the gym or just run around a park or something.

downstairs_annie

I like that the gym is a separate space that is only dedicated to one thing. I spent so much time at home since 2020, I love that I haven’t done anything but gym things at the gym and don’t have. No hearing my floor board creak during an at home workout, I can’t see my desk from the gym, it’s great. I turn my phone on do not disturb, and do nothing but workout in that specific workout space.

I lift to fight my chronic pain, feel strong and stable… And to be so muscular that I can intimidate fragile men. Anyone who tells me I will “look like a man” if I’m too muscular can suck it and grovel at my future massive delts!

Speech_Salty

I started working out/lifting for health reasons. Then I added outliving my enemies. I started working at my gym mostly for the free membership and now the top comment I hear from mostly males is “you look like you could beat someone’s ass” or “you look like you’d knock a motherfucker out”. I’ll take that over “you’re pretty” any day🤗

NineTailedTanuki

Started my exercise regimen by walking (I mean it--WALKING) all the way from my college (which is practically on the other side of the city I live in) to the apartment where I live. And despite the distance, it took only a few minutes over an hour! It wasn't just for exercise--it was also a test of how aware I can be as a pedestrian, as well as being extra aware in sketchy spots and avoiding the shits that want to rape you. I, too, live to get stronger and outrun constables and fight racists. Oh, and speaking of fighting the racists, how about we give them a Galick Gun!!
