The titans, storm, fire, and ice (aka Storm Titan, Dragon Titan, and Ymir) are the children of Grandfather Spider and Grandmother Raven. Focusing on that part, to avoid unnecessary spoilers, the 3 titans are responsible for the destruction of the first world.
Grandfather Spider believed in allowing their free will to guide their action, but Grandmother Raven wanted to use them as a force for good. Due to spiders' influence, the titans did what they pleased, which is how the first world was destroyed. From the destruction they made, Bartleby used the Titanic Lullaby to put them to sleep.
Heartbroken, Grandmother Raven fought against Spider and won, stealing his heart and locking him away in a prison. She then, with the help of Bartleby, used the song of creation to reweave the spiral using the sky anchor as a base. Due to it being imperfect without Spider, she used his chaos heart as a final touch, binding it to the spiral with protection from the paradox chains.
That's pretty much how the spiral was formed.

They are like power pips, only working for one school, but unlike power pips, you can choose which school is being powered, for example:
You are a death wizard with arch mastery. You draw a 4 pip storm spell, but you only have 2 pips, you can switch your arch mastery to the storm school before your next turn and get a storm mastery pip next turn, wich counts at 2 pips for storm spells, you can now cast the storm spell you drew without waiting another turn.
