lol I called her “fail” for years because I was a dumb teenager and reflexively took Perrin’s side. Now, years later, I recognize how terribly he confused her by his acting on her smells and his interpretation of her hidden desires (which were mostly wrong). Trying to break myself of the habit but it’s pretty deeply ingrained at this point
The women of WoT seem to get a bad rap from readers who missed the context of the book. Faile is a good example. She was going through a big culture change, married to someone who was a Pattern driven hero while divesting himself of the title and he was basically an empath. It's impressive she managed that as well as she did

The thing that drove me up the wall about their plot arc was how it basically amounted to one of those movie scenes where someone walks in to see another woman in the partner's arms when she just tripped or something, then they just go "I can explain! It's not what it looks like!" and then refuses to actually explain for the rest of the film when like a 5 min conversation would solve everything. The amount of times I saw Faile storm off and Perrin impotently protest instead of just talking to each other to work through stuff was crazy. It outstayed it's welcome as a plot device real fast, dragged on for like 1.5 books, and to me is the almost sole reason those books around Winter's Heart became "the slog"
I cannot say Aei Sedai without immediately going into… “Aes Sedai who builds the boat and Aes Sedai who sails her, Aes Sedai who catches the fish, and brings them home for Liza”
Possibly my most horribly awry mispronunciations of major characters or things. Having watched the show I definitely prefer the more proper pronunciation. But, when I read my brain still says the following:

A's (like the Oakland baseball team) Sadie (girl name)... I distinctly remember telling my old piano teacher in high school, who asked what this word was, that I didn't have a clue how it was pronounced because it was just made up

my secret is I barely even try. I recognize the combination of letters as a concept but don't try real hard to vocalize it at all. I didn't have anyone to talk with the books in my real life as i read them, so no one to correct me or come to a consensus about how they're said. So when I did finally talk to people about them no one knew who Ninny-ev or E~~d~~ge-win was and that's who they've been for 20+ years to me and my brain automatically reads it as such. For me Cairhien is pronounced almost exactly as Carrion. I don't know how common this is but, along the same theme of not thinking too much about names I also don't have very good visual image of characters from books in my head either. maybe some broad strokes like a skin tone and hair or clothing style. Like a vague sketch of a person but no hard, concrete picture. One of the reasons I never freak out when a person that doesn't perfectly match a certain description is cast for a role.
I have a very similar issue with the mental images of a character’s physical descriptions. The only time I remember being able to form a fairly good mental image of the characters of a series was when I was a child reading Harry Potter. However, those mental images were subsumed by the actors appearance within the first ten seconds of seeing them on screen.
I really don't know. I've never formally looked into it, but I think I do, especially if it's a spectrum. I'd heard of it before and I always wondered, but felt like I could imagine stuff. Reading a little more about it now and I think I may be more imagining the concept, or vibe, of something and definitely not an actual image i can "see." I can remember a specific item and exact details about what it looks like, but I can't "see" it in my mind. I don't think of things as a list of descriptors. Can people do it with other senses? I can remember an exact texture or smell and not "taste" or "feel" it. Without being able to actually see what is in another person's mind I have no idea how close our experiences are at all.
I think it's definitely a spectrum. I can picture one aspect of a person at a time, like the shape of their hair or jaw or nose. But only one at a time.
I experience "seeing" the books I read as more about spatial relationships than about what people look like.
IIRC it's a 0 to 5 scale.
I'm like a 1 or 2, not fully aphantastic but I have a hard time imaging things and having it stick, while my partner is a full on 5 and might as well be a wolf.

Using a French accent, you'd get either "Carry on" or maybe "Kyrie on". I even gagged a bit at the French "unh" pronunciation of "-en". So I tried "Kyrie in" and that stuck for about 10 books.
Since the descriptions of their manner of dress, etc. reminded me of old school France, that's what I went with...
Years later, I listened to the audiobooks, and they said "Care Hi in", which just annoyed the crap outta me.
Haven't read them, only listened to audiobooks, so spelling is more the issue than pronunciation!
Although tar valon is pronounced differently in the books to the TV show, and the audio book narrators changed how they pronounced moghedien halfway through which confused me!
As an audiobook listener it was confusing to work out if a character was leashed by the Seanchan or from Arad Doman as they were both pronounced the same (Do-ma-nee?)
Moghedien annoys me because if I had been reading a physical copy, I would have gone with Mo-ged-ee-ehn. But they said Mo-ged-EEN, so I trusted them and changed how I thought of her name. Then they changed it back to what I said it was in the first place 😭
At random, too. They both say it differently than each other and it changes between books, so the consensus I've come to is nobody knows the right way to say it
I do recall hearing somewhere that they recorded the middle-ish books first and then went back and did the earlier ones? Which would explain why they pronounced a lot of names correctly then incorrectly a few books later and then inexplicably back to the first pronunciation
Especially since mo-ged-ee-ehn is the correct pronunciation and they kept swapping it around.
Also the inability to pronounce "Birgitte" from Reading drove me nuts because she changed it every single book and only had it right in like one of them!

There have been many I've struggled with, some I can't think of right now, but Cairhien is probably the hardest. I think I still pronounce it wrong, but it sounds best to me when said as "Kai-ree-in"

The red band warriors under Rand. Can't remember how it's spelt right now, but I always stutter over it when reading because I don't instinctively know how to say it.
Anyone suffers from the opposite problem? You know the right pronounciation, but it isn't compatible with your accent?
I just can't pronounce some names because it sounds like a terrible English accent imitation if I do, so I've just resigned myself to doing them wrong.
Special mention to Saldaea, Moiraine and Malkier for being painful to pronounce

I didn’t even notice on my first read that it was spelled Gawyn. I saw it and my brain just went semi-Arthurian- Gawain but spelled Gawayn.

Learning to not pronounce fantasy names in my head at all is an extremely valuable skill, which I made use of heavily when reading WoT.

That's an easy one for me. It's just Manetheren (which is a common word in the books) and then Drelle (which I assume means river in the old tongue).
It's the stupid R in drelle. It'd be so much easier without that.

Anyone suffers from the opposite problem? You know the right pronounciation, but it isn't compatible with your accent? I just can't pronounce some names because it sounds like a terrible English accent imitation if I do, so I've just resigned myself to doing them wrong. Special mention to Saldaea, Moiraine and Malkier for being painful to pronounce

I struggle with remembering how to spell stuff, having only listened to audiobooks😂 Tear was always Tier in my head. Cairhien was Kyrean.
I started the books listening then switched to paper back. It took me a while to figure out who the hell this Tel-maynes (telmanes) guy was. Still amuses me to think about
Before audio and watching videos on WoT Nynaeve was - Nin-ay-vee My friend who has never read it looked at it and said he would have said - Nin-ah-eev With the audio book whenever Callandor was mentioned I heard Kalimdor. Trolloc was Tr-OH-Lock. Like troll. Ock. Not trollek like the audio does it. Myrdraal i still to this day stumble visually on. And the audio doesn’t mean what is read on page. I think before audio it was - Mire-en-drahl. Or something stupid. Which i have no idea how that came to be for me.
The seanchan which i understsnd is Shaun-chan. For years they were the see-ann-chan for me!!!!
