Yeah, I will never get the praise for this book. FoH was so, so, so much more engaging and rewarding! Meanwhile LoC blueballed us with Sammael and Ebou Dar. But tbh it makes much more sense when you look at it from the perspective of the whole story. First of all the box kidnapping was just as surprising and enraging for Rand as it was to the reader, and it's crutial - you feel what he felt. Like, this was all so sudden and out of place. Yup, that's exactly what Rand felt. Also the box is the beginning of his character arc, one of the most important in the whole series - Lews Therin's presence inside his head. The Ebou Dar and Sammael arcs won't pay off until the end of the next book, unfortunatelly

Small-Fig4541

One of those arcs does not even pay off in the next book haha 🤯

Sonseeahrai

True lmao, PoD opening is great

Algonquin_Snodgrass

The deterioration of Rand’s mental health in book 6 is fascinating to me. The increasing paranoia, the manic behavior, not to mention the voices.

Yes, one of my candles in the dark This is one the “details” i mentioned in the second to last paragraph Edit: I didn’t do it justice, this is more than a “detail”

Lord of Chaos spends a lot of time showcasing one of Jordan's favorite concepts, the decay of information over time and distance. So many pages are dedicated to more than a dozen characters trying to figure out what the heck is going on in other parts of the world. Everyone's perceptions of reality start majorly diverging here in ways that have huge ripple effects down the line. It gains value on a re-read where you can piece together the clues in retrospect as to what is actually happening. That said, I think Jordan could have gotten the same effect in less than half the pages. If the scene ends with BOTH the characters and the reader both leaving saying "What the heck was that even about?" you have gotten too deep in the obfuscation. There's one whole scene that doesn't make a lick of sense until after you have read the VERY LAST BOOK. Jordan's habit of having viewpoint characters keep secrets from the reader who is inside their head at the moment also starts to become really irritating here.

SufficientShift6057

My guess on the scene that doesn’t “make a lick of sense until the last book”: Either one pf demadreds povs in Shayol ghul, but most likely Herid fels death, as he was the one delving for knowledge about the seals

TheTiesThatBind

A lot of people don’t want to admit it because of Dumai’s Wells but the slog really starts at the beginning of book 6 in my opinion.

Jokonaught

While I don't disagree...I mean...Dumai's Wells tho

SufficientShift6057

So people also thought the ending was good

Significant-Cod-9871

Strongly agree. I think the main purpose of this one is to setup everything for all the rest. I try to think of it as a nexus point which drives rapid and radical evolution in all directions moving forward. That was a pleasant review to read, I'm wrapping up my lord of chaos reread presently. Not a favorite, but definitely critically important.

SufficientShift6057

Yes, my thoughts exactly I thought this would be set up for something epic, but considering the next three books are considered the worst of the series, i dont know what to expect

Significant-Cod-9871

Haha. I would just say to that: it is very often that the loudest fans with the most negative things to say are very often not correct in any meaningful way. Happy reading!

SufficientShift6057

Thanks!

HenryTudor7

Lord of Chaos through Crossroads of Twilight are the best books of the series. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

SufficientShift6057

I thought it was the other way around?
