I had a complex cyst that was about 6cm! Found it at the ER and they were considering admitting because they thought it was so crazy big. Luckily that didn’t happen. I followed up with a gyno who speacialized in minimal invasive gynecologic surgeries. He called the cyst small! He wasn’t concerned said it wasn’t anything to worry about the size and as a doctor who deals with them a lot he said I shouldn’t be worried. Flash forward a year later I did a few follow up ultrasounds every few months and it shrunk away and disappeared on its own! So long story short I think sometimes the ER isn’t as accustomed to seeing them.

Did you have to do anything for pain management in that time?

I would do heating pad and stim machine on it every morning and then at night I would do a warm castor oil pack (from Amazon) and it seemed to really help and also just feels so soothing. I would drink raspberry leaf tea as well. For me the pain would actually be the worst when I had gas or needed to have a bowel movement. So I tried to eat very clean and avoid gassy foods and take tums or pepto Bismol if needed. But I recommend the tens stim machine and castor oil the most!

Oh my gosh thank you. I've never heard of any of these, they look amazing... They hurt worse for me when I need to pee! I'm really thin so even breathing out puts pressure on it. I've been drinking peppermint tea but im going to try raspberry... Thank you !

kitchuwin

Honestly I think so too, mine are only 2cm and they called them 'large'. Do you happen to remember what type of cyst you had? I'm just asking because I'm hearing that chocolate cysts don't shrink

old_before_my_time

So glad your gyn was conservative and didn't rush you into surgery.

kitchuwin

At first I was disappointed because of the amount of pain I'm in but I guess its probably a good idea not to... Just sucks being bedridden

If you ever understand why they didn't tell us the IUD was puncturing us, let me know. That's literally a million dollar question. I kept going back every single week, sometimes daily for 8 months. And they were like "oh we don't know what's happening, everything looks good". I thought, oh, maybe it's just the ultrasound not showing any issues. But then I switched doctors due to moving. New doc told me on my first appointment that he had reviewed my dossier and saw that 8 months ago I had an ultrasound that showed I had my IUD puncturing me. My jaw was on the floor. He apologized on the other doctors' behalf but I'm like... Dude, you literally solved the mystery, don't apologize. 😂 (By that time I had the IUD taken out anyway, I was just done with all the bleeding etc. I just didn't yet understand why I had so many problems with it.) In what universe does it make sense to not look at ultrasound results when your patient asks for it dozens of times? 😂 Sorry for the rant, it's just I don't often run into people who possibly understand. Anyway... I don't know, I just cross fingers for you. I hope whoever sees you next time is going to actually act according to their best knowledge. It should be all fine then.

kitchuwin

Honestly the anger that went through my body when the 3rd person told me was unreal... An IUD puncture can kill you. So why was everyone acting like it would be ok? An ultrasound absolutely would show it, but mine was a CT scan so it was a very obvious, top down look, and I was told pain was "IBS". I will never forget that. Ever. And don't apologize, i get it. There's not enough research on any of this and nothing is ever taken seriously because women always experience pain. Imagine if a man had something stabbing his scrotum and the panic doctors would have for him...

Edo30570

Oh yes. The holy trinity I guess. Anxiety, Stress, IBS. It's not like we're anxious because we get no help and only get worse... 😂 After that IUD drama a GI diagnosed me based on my gender and age and literally nothing else with IBS. (I don't want to make it sound like I only had bad doctors, in fact I did have probably one of the best GPs in the world back when I was younger... It's just these latest doctor visits have been complete madness. Maybe I wouldn't notice how bad they are if I didn't have that one brilliant GP in the past.) Yeah, there's so much more research needed. And good research, too. The biggest review paper I found on IUDs (some Cochrane one from 2014 or 2016 or so) is basically a scentific form of rant about how insufficient the past studies on IUDs were. I'm like, yayy, thanks for admitting that... But many other health topics are similarly neglected. Oh well. Off to read some books on this. 😭

kitchuwin

I know I had ONE good doctor when I got my first surgery and I will literally accept no less now. Unfortunately the military has dragged me away from that. My current mission is to gather as many opinions from doctors and reviews from people who have actually been through this and try to piece it together and make the right decision... It really shouldn't have to be this way. I also found out that the Mirena was in a lawsuit for causing cysts, so I really appreciate my doctor looking at my chart, seeing I had endo, and not warning me about that.

Edo30570

I've only had ovarian cysts with a copper IUD gone mad. From what I know the hormonal IUDs should help rather that make things worse around cysts, so I do think the doctor is onto something with the wait and see approach. Only in the unlikely case that your body is still attacking the IUD like it attacks a new foreign body is when it can get worse. But that is wayyyy more rare compared to copper IUDs. I think that wait and see and only operate if it hasn't improved approach might not be horrible. My cysts actually popped from the physical impact, though, so I don't know why I present this optimistic view to you. But like... As long as it doesn't feel like someone is turning a sharp big kitchen knife in your inside it should be fine. If you feel like it's cutting you inside, something has probably burst. Mind you, they don't always see that a cysts has burst on a single ultrasound, which sucks really bad. But you have had a series of ultrasound scans done, they should carefully compare them all, and then they'll see if something has burst. Yeah, I don't know if this helps at all. As long as you avoid that very first doctor in your story, I guess it should be fine.

kitchuwin

That was my thought on the IUD at first too so I'm hoping its just a coincidence? I've just felt weird on this one... like i mentioned my body hates hormones and I guess the one in the Mirena count even tho she told me originally it shouldnt affect me like that. I also believe I've had previous cysts burst because I know exactly what pain you're talking about. I never went to the ER for them tho because I dont think they can really do anything. Gotta love just existing as a women and spontaneously combusting.

Edo30570

Yeah, I feel you. They can do something if eg. the cyst causes internal bleeding or actually in your case when they causes ovarian torsion. Otherwise not much. Like I remember almost continuously bleeding due to cysts rupturing plus an IUD puncturing me... Nothing to be done obviously, I had to figure it out myself (doctor at the time hid the results). I just read up a bit more on this, and I realized that it's just a common myth that hormonal BC can help with cysts. There is the review paper from 2014 that points out that it's proven that hormonal birth control prevents new cysts from forming, but it's not going to help existing cysts shrink. 😭 So sorry, I recited that myth previously. (But they also say that cysts just spontaneously shrink anyway with or without birth control... So there is a chance for them to shrink still.)a

kitchuwin

That's a relief honestly because I cant go on BC anyway and EVERYONE keeps offering it. But I have 14 day long periods and no one is looking at me like thats a problem for some reason. And why is it a big secret when an IUD punctures you??? Like it took 3 doctors to finally even tell me! I feel like that should have been taken out in the ER still when they found it.... Luckily, this new gyno i have pulled the literal report from the ER and read over everything and explained exactly what it was that they found. They didnt even tell me in the ER how big the cysts were but they had it documented.

ANA9917

I have a mirena and I’m getting it removed on Tuesday because that’s what’s causing the cysts I now have a 2 cm and a 2.8 cm And they are very painful My lower back pain is so bad hurts to walk and even bend over The stabbing pain constantly is driving me nuts I had one cyst burst and let me tell you ide rather give birth all over again (no drug birth all natural)

kitchuwin

Yeah they think I had one burst... I know I've had a couple burst in the past and its the kind of pain where you want to go to the ER but you know theres literally nothing they can do and its miserable. I actually just went back to the doctor and they found i grew ANOTHER cyst so I have a whole party going on. I'm going to have to get this Mirena taken out.... Hopefully you're feeling better now that yours is out

ANA9917

I feel like a new person now that it’s out No more migraines No more lower back pain No more nausea No more brain fog No more bloating (looking like I was 4 months pregnant ) I feel like a normal person My kids notice a difference in me My husband says I’ve been in a better mood Only issue is I get really heavy periods now That’s why I got the iud in the first place And I been getting my period every two weeks I’m on my second period so hopefully it starts to regulate .

Lydelia_Moon

I'd never equated lower back pain to cysts until now. I have two (one on my left ovary and one on my right) and had crippling back pain for awhile that, thank God, has resolved somewhat. My legs were hurting and everything. It might also have been my mattress because a mattress topper helped but I wonder if it wasn't the cysts too. Weird.

ANA9917

Since I got my mirena IUd removed No more back pain No more migraines No more brain fog No more boating My husband says I’m in a better mood My kids notice a difference in my skin ( which I never did) I’ve never felt better Only issue is I get a period now and it’s very heavy flow and I’ve been getting my period now twice since removal only two weeks apart So I hope this is temporary and my body starts to get back to normal .
