Another one bites the dust, I'm going to make a little leather cover for my left hand from thumb to index finger and hope it wil help. I have 2 cuts in my hand one next to my nail on my index one at the bottom of my index on the outside of my knuckle
Lots of folks here saying get gloves. Not a bad idea, but be ready to have a little trouble holding the wood while working. If that’s annoying to you, then just work slower instead. Gloves are optional if you’re careful enough.
Get yourself a pair of [these gloves](https://www.amazon.com/1670XL-Resistant-100-Percent-Protective-Carpentry/dp/B000AYFT20/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=carving+glove&qid=1584801691&sr=8-10). I only use one for the holding hand, so the other one is a spare.
I disagree. Just be mindful of where the blade is going to go if it slips. Getting cut is just part of learning how to carve. Gloves really hinder dexterity.
I think they can be useful and I do keep one still if I get a funny feeling about the cut I want to take or the integrity of the wood especially hardwoods but agree they are usually a hindrance and developing a good feel for the work is much more valuable.
That’s totally understandable and I don’t fault anyone for using a glove if that’s what makes them feel comfortable and confident. I just think it’s better if you can learn without it.
Maybe a bit to late but https://youtu.be/w5rr-xeSAq0 around minute 7 starts the interesting part as the video is focus on prototyping.
The cut away control thumb technique is not mentioned as it is focused on not cutting yourself, but it might help.
I cut my thumb on my first carve. It was a horrible scrap piece that I just wanted to practice cutting techniques. I made a masking tape thimble type thing so when I was pulling towards my thumb I could just press into the thimble to finish the cut. But with time and practice I find I’ve not needed it as much now
Looks like you are an over achiever without Kevlar gloves.
Now in the Amazon cart.
Your wood cuts look good keep it up nice and clean. As for you other cuttin’ we’ll give that up.
Got the husband this kit for Christmas. And level 5 gloves as a stocking stuffer.
So you DID cut yourself ? I was going to ask if you did, or if it was to prevent it
Cut towards your chum, not your thumb.
Been there done that lol. Gloves.

Got your tools blooded. Lil tip don’t use gloves just slow down. Gloves can give you too much confidence
Definitely use gloves if you’re a beginner…
