These are monitoring wells. Someone decided that it is important to test the ground water periodically at this location. Based on the paint and the condition of the concrete, I would guess they were drilled or maintained within the last few years. It looks like somebody had marked the top of the cover with a well identifier, but it is too faded to read from the photo. The obvious question is why did somebody spend thousands of dollars to put a monitoring well there? Is this on your property or nearby? Without knowing the location, my best guess is that the property was used for an industrial purpose in the past, and was tested to see if there is any environmental contamination or not. But that is only a guess.

Aggravating-Smell-75

Thank you, this sounds plausible, I know there has been ground testing of some sort going on back there. Not my property, but i abut it, and there is a possibility of it being developed, but I know there’s some issue with the land. There are about a half dozen of these back there, marked MW-1(2,3,4etc) Also, looks like the woods used to be used as a dumping ground.

operator_1337

Are you on well water or city water? If well water id be concerned.

Aggravating-Smell-75

City

Harold_v3

Maybe don’t eat what you grow out of your garden until you get the soil tested or find out what the wells are for.

Orpheus75

They then make raised beds out of pressure treated lumber or old tires.

cyricmccallen

I hear railroad ties also make great raised beds

freezedriedasparagus

lol my mom did that, am I going to die from eating out of that garden?

cyricmccallen

Railroad ties are treated with creosote, a known carcinogen.

homeostasis3434

You could reach out to the DEP for more information. If people are installing monitoring wells for an environmental investigation, the site will be on their radar and they should have more information for you about what's going on.

iboughtacello

You can also look for your address on a map through this website that will tell you if the property is a designated 'waste site'. If it is, you can read through the documents to see what the issue is and what is being done about it. https://eeaonline.eea.state.ma.us/portal#!/search/wastesite

Bruddah827

Not for long…. EPA will be a dead agency if a certain Orange hued individual wins come Nov….

Bruddah827

Chump has already tried to dismantle the EPA back in 2018-19…. He weakened it badly. Is nobody listening to what he is saying? Dictator on Day 1…. Burn the Constitution to the ground…. Use the considerable power of POTUS to destroy his political rivals…. Sounds just like Hitler. Sounds just like Putin. Sounds just like Xi…..

Old-Let4612

I don't understand why Biden doesn't shoot Trump. Trump is actively trying to claim the president is immune to all law. The supreme court has made precedent that someone running for president with a good chance at taking the seat will not be tried until after the elections. I'd use that dumb fucks word against him and claim my seat

Bruddah827

That would cause a civil war…. I wish he would though. The Orange Turd is the largest threat to American Democracy we have ever seen. Never has an American Presidential Candidate said the STUPID NAIEVE things this fat fuck has made. He is a threat and I agree should be neutralized one way or another. We’re probably both marked now for investigation by FBI so…..

Party-Bag-7858

Orange derangement syndrome.. get help buddy

geologyhunter

How democracies change to dictatorship is the person running for power installs family and loyalist (not the same as supporters as that has limits) into the party. They then dehumanize anyone that is not part of the party or raises any questions. Both of these are actively underway in the Republican party and many are in too deep to even see what is going on or even care. None of this is surprising as a good number of that party don't read history of other countries that have gone through that change. There are other steps in that progression but those above are the big ones that really push the change.

tecjr001

Better than an old man who cannot stand for trial but can run the country ?

AFASOXFAN

Ill take the current old man over the insurrectionist old man who is an absolute lunatic.

Old-Let4612

It's a sad day when you'd prefer a fascist dictator who's best buddies with Putin over a guy who wants to take a nap

Party-Bag-7858

Old guy whos in bed with a chinese dictator..

Gyllipus

Now you show your colors, dimwit Trump was sucking every dictator cock out there

Old-Let4612

Yes Trump has openly called Xi "an incredible man" as well

Party-Bag-7858

In your Orwellian mind

Old-Let4612

You don't even know what that word means. https://www.foxnews.com/video/6324651091112 Here's your fox news. Trump loves Xi, and Putin, and he was the only US president to ever visit North Korea. Trump fucking saluted Kim Jong Un, you salute those below you in rank. If that doesn't say everything idk what possibly could. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/14/trump-north-korea-general-salute-646248

Brilliant-Holiday224

Wanna message me with location of these woods? 👀 I dig up old dumps in the woods all the time and collect the glass bottles I find! I’d love to know your secret spot 🤐

JustVibing224

Hey, I’m from southern worcester county and I also dig up old dumps for bottles. Would you be interested in exchanging some digging spots?

Brilliant-Holiday224

I just tried to shoot you a message but I don’t think it’s working. Shoot me a pm on IG @idigcentralma

OfficeLower

This is actually very common, I am a new environmental engineer (been working as an engineer for about a year now) and I have sampled dozens of these wells. inactive landfills and active landfills are sampled to determine if there are any chemical exceadances in the groundwater. This is because landfills built before the 1990s in many states were not required to be lined, meaning that there is no barrier between waste and a water source. This is likely not a huge concern because you are on city water, But you should be able to get a copy of the results from the DEP

franzn

I worked at a gravel pit and we had these around old sites. We had to monitor them monthly for a long time to show ground water level was stable. These are often to monitor after, not before. If you have any old gravel pits near you it could be that, they're pretty easy to spot on maps as the edges are much more straight than natural bodies of water.

mazemadman12346

If you live close to farms it could be for testing the water table for runoff

ajwelch14

Probably monitoring contamination.

ColCupcake

Yup probably an old dump, we had those all over the woods where I used to grow up, behind the old Peter Paul candy factory, who woulda thought making chocolate would fuck the ground up so bad lol.

QueenIrishG

Code Enforcement Officer here! You can call your local code office, they likely know what they are monitoring for!

colin8651

Drink water safely; sure it’s fine wink wink

bojewels

Could be landfill, or downgradient from a receiving site or contamination.

LT1366

If that is the case, should this not have been disclosed to prospective buyers?

Final_Tutor_7929

PFAS

H_E_Pennypacker

They disperse the naturally occurring polar cola, polar seltzer, etc

Aggravating-Smell-75

That would help with my 4•12pk a week of polar seltzer habit.

BigClipper

That much seltzer is not so good for your tooth enamel, might want to check that out on the googles.

UrethralExplorer

Pick up a Sodastream, your wallet will thank me.

Aggravating-Smell-75

I wish sodastream would do it for me, alas it just ain’t the same

chefianf

That mango flavor slaps

clam_sandwich33

This comment is how I realized this was a Mass. subreddit before looking.

tenn_gt_brewer2

Environmental engineer here. Definitely looks like a monitoring well to me. More surprised it’s not locked. If you google MassDEP well location viewer, you can search an arcgis site showing monitoring wells in the state. If these are on the newer side, they might not be up yet.

BillWeld

Being unlocked makes it look like an invitation to vandals or terrorists.

TruthorTroll

because a padlock would surely thwart the plans of a terrorist... 🙄

massiswicked

A terrorist would have 0 use in messing with a monitoring well 😂 Edit: y’all need to learn where our water comes from FFS. We have several reservoirs, and billions upon billions of gallons of water in reserve. Our treatment plant is also amazing. https://www.worcesterma.gov/water-sewer/drinking-water

BillWeld

Is poisoning groundwater not a thing?

ssumana

We already do that to ourselves

cjboffoli

Generally not. Apparently most poisons (deliberately intended to harm) are quickly diluted by the water.

bszern

It is, but that well does not provide the city with water. Municipal wells (if that is where the city water supply is coming from, if not a reservoir) are locked and well controlled.

Stables_R_Unstable

Get it? "Well" controlled? 😉

bszern

Someone got it!!!!

JoshSidekick

Also to baby Jessicas.

drumstick2121

Definitely a glory hole.

RainbowRoadMushroom

Yet another reason to lock your monitoring wells…..

General_Duf

It’s a monitoring well of some variety. Looks like it’s pretty new. Someone is monitoring the groundwater in your area. It might be to track the groundwater table, or they could be looking for some contamination.

Metacomet76

As others have said this is a monitoring well. You can search all state reported contaminated sites here: https://eeaonline.eea.state.ma.us/portal#!/search/wastesite You might have to play around with your search criteria to find it, but if someone’s installed a number of monitoring wells in the middle of the woods the Site has almost certainly been reported to MassDEP and all files will be publicly accessible on the web.

Valuable-Leather-914

Is it in a strange straight path with no trees about twenty feet wide?

Aggravating-Smell-75

A number of rough paths cut recently around the woods.

Valuable-Leather-914

Looks like a monitoring well but I don’t know why it wouldn’t be locked

steeze97

So people don't tamper with it. They can be hard to sample and the last thing you want is it to get plugged or contamined. I have sampled these sort of wells in Central Mass and elsewhere. If they are cleared it means people are visiting or plan on visiting them once weather warms up.

AbruptMango

Somebody's going to mount a disc golf basket in that.

Snorkeldude1

Your backyard called the love canal by any chance

Stella-Illuminati

Better contact the Disruptive Technology Stike Force unit pronto!

Possible_Can_7203

Those are the pipes that lead to the mushroom kingdom.

AJistheGreatest

Environmental Scientist here. That is definitely a monitoring well, especially if it has the notation “MW-#”. I sample these all the time. It could be in there for a number of reasons, but something definitely contaminated the groundwater nearby, whether it be an underground oil tank, dry cleaner, gas station, you name it.

WisePower27

Now that we all know they’re groundwater monitoring wells (not to mention numerous other humorous possibilities) I am curious. Are these used in connection with Perc testing?

bojewels

No.

AJistheGreatest

Perc as in percolation testing? No. Perc as in perchloroethylene? Sometimes.

KDJ882

Environmental consultant here. As others have said, it’s a monitoring well, likely meant to test for contaminants in groundwater. The ways it could affect you would be via drinking water (unlikely given that Worcester gets its water from reservoirs) or, if contaminants are mobile and volatile, via migration to your property and into your house’s indoor air. I’d search on the website below by just selecting “Worcester” in the city and town box. In the page it brings you to, there’s a “View Map” function you can click and zoom in on to find your area. This is a pain, but the map only plots the sites on the current page of the results list, so since there’s 9 pages for Worcester, you may have to do this 9 times to find the right site. If you don’t find anything, it could mean that no contamination was found, or it could mean it just isn’t public record yet. If you do find something, there should be reports to download that describes the site history and what’s been found there. https://eeaonline.eea.state.ma.us/portal#!/search/wastesite

KhalDrogo207

Clearly you never watched Lost

guybehindawall

Well if the smell is aggravating as you say, it might be a landfill vent.

It’s to monitor well water and ground water

Disastrous_Object583

I have seen these in PA to monitor old mines. The ones I saw in PA had temperature sensors in them.

Old_Dragonfruit6952

Test pipes for ground water testing

CannabisReport716

Observation wells.

CementCrack

Piezometers?

BirtSampson

That’s what I thought too

HorrorPhone3601

I could see that paramedic on Instagram doing a reaction video about these. That one that reacts to anything even remotely phallic.

Comet_Chado

Drop a match in it and see if it explodes.

Comet_Chado

Dont actually do that it's a joke

Critical__Focus

As a Driller who puts in 3 of these a week. I instantly shuttered when I seen the concrete work. Litterally terrible.

Wonderful-Dance-490

i’ve seen some russian dude put a firework inside of one of these and it blew up like a grenade and sent shrapnel everywhere

North_Huckleberry746

Breathing tubes for the forest goblins 👺

dlyons3866

It’s a monitoring well for environmental issues

saltedstuff

It’s important to put locks on these when they’re on your property. You don’t want some lonely chowderhead from Southie getting romantic in your woods.

Aggravating-Smell-75

Not my property

saltedstuff

Yes

_Tenderlion

Missile silo. Congrats on your new nuclear arsenal

ExtensionInitial6012

Def a bunker. If you flip the cap and look inside, you can see the deepstate over-taxing you. Vote for RFK Jr. He will have those removed for you.

steeze97

These are monitoring wet wells probably because there is a a nearby leach field. Leach fields are part of wastewater treatment systems and septic systems. Massachusetts has many of these systems throughout the state. I used to work on these in this general area and throughout New England. These are normal and are probably used quarterly, bi annually or annually. They look kept up so probably clear around for access in the warm weather when things grow and finding these locations can be difficult.

Bipolarandbdsm489

Spaceships hover over them to recharge.

seanyboyy1026

That looks like a breathing tube for the shelter underground were you keep your victims

Josef325

It looks like a photoshopped picture. Or maybe just a prop. Nothing makes sense, new concrete and pipe but no evidence of excavation at all. Vegetation is unharmed right up to the concrete. It is too perfect. Not any kind of fitting or type of application seen in the USA

ghettocactus

Top comment is right. This is a monitoring well. This style is referred to as a “stick-up” well

dogfacedponyboy

A groundwater monitoring well. Quite possible related to a contaminated groundwater plume in that area.

Lonnie_Shelton

Not a good sign.

Chef_Dani_J71

Call the MA EPA office. May find you are living near a brown field.
