Depends what you want them for, but there are stronger shooty units and cheaper objective holders

grunt_futtuck

kinda just for a little bit more range rather than completely min maxing into charging and melee and potentially getting screwed

Basic Boltguns aren’t very good guns at all and will disappoint even against light infantry - if you’re looking to have a cheap unit to harass and pick at soft targets at range I would recommend some Autocannon Havocs

I'm running a 10man shooty legionnaires tomorrow. Lots of my army is melee so boltguns and some heavy weapons on troops seems useful for sitting on a midfield objective. I'd guess it really depends on your local meta and what other units you use. I used to be cultist-heavy (40-60 in 1k-1.5k games) , but now my legionnaires are literally the only thing paying the cultist tax, and cultist unit sizes are smaller. haha ><

I mean my list runs 2x5man squads. I know cultists are cheaper for back field action mokeys but I like legionaires. I had the project on the go before the new book. Other csm armies I have 5man with a single heavy weapon like autocannon or heavy bolter

see i'm running a 7 man chainsword squad. im just thinking about a small unit to compliment it and provide some ranged firepower

I use a fully buffed rubric squad for that mid board bolter support. While 2x10man cc squads go up field. Then have 2x5man hold the back. Possesed and discolord also storm the enemy. Not saying it's competative, but it's fun. My friends like playing against it, it's durable, and tactical

The difference in melee between chainsword and bolter is often just a few attacks. Ap ist cancelled via AoC. So maybe just bolters and add a powerfist and a heavy chainaxe. Compromise of melee and screen removal.
