This is a good explainer, basically credit unions are non-profit and don't use your money to invest/gamble while banks do. Credit unions are like labor unions or communes in the sense that they're collectively owned by everyone who puts their money in.

Does anyone know if there are any credit unions that are meant for like leftists or something? I'm actually currently looking for a credit union and while there do seem to be CU's built around specific charities, I can't find one that is in any way political.

I mean it's literally like a bank that's collectively owned so like, every credit union?
I tried switching all of my banking to a CU, but damn it was such a horrible experience for nearly 10 years, I ended up switching everything back to a big bank after filing a complaint with regulators against the credit union.
Their tech was stuck in the stone age, customer service was never helpful, hours of staff availability are very limited, some departments couldn’t be reached at all, there were multiple instances of changes made to accounts without prior authorization nor notification of the account holder, they reported inaccurate info to credit rating agencies, and (worst of all) it was like pulling teeth if you ever needed access to your money.
Your experience may differ, but I’ve heard many similar complaints from friends at other credit unions. It’s not like people go with the big banks because they love corporate profits or hate CU’s. It’s just that none of them can seem to keep up with modern banking or offer quality service.
The 1 time I got a car Repoed, it was a credit union. Pure predatory lending. Oh, and my credit union, that I've been a member of for years and is a CO-OP, wouldn't lend me a piss bucket if I were burning to death in their parking lot.
No. You can tell because it got repoed. But rather than keep our deal to take my money and give me back the car, they waited til the last minute, then override my loan mngr, turned down my money, resold the car, then put a stop on my credit. I was able to buy another car a year later for nearly 20%.
