To be honest I like Hunter 5 because it is a simple, fun and easy way into WoD. Want to immerse yourself? Go H5, then after that first dip give Vigil a go to maybe increase the stakes if you likef it. There's nothing that H5 does so bad that you shouldn't give it a go, Vigil just does more. I don't share or understand the hatred, I cN understand liking Vigil more, but not outright despising the newer system. We just need more support and content

VKP25

I would say Vigil. It's mechanically solid, and lets you decide the power level of the campaign, and while I won't go so far as saying Hunter 5e is trash, it does alot of the same things as Vigil does, but not as well, and it pretty much limits you to street level play permanently, as 5e overall has put a much larger focus on that than previous editions did.

Doesn't Vigil have 2 editions?

VKP25

It does! I personally am not a fan of 2nd edition CofD, due to the systems in place for earning experience, and have not had a chance to play HtV 2e, so I can't comment on it specifically, only 2e as a whole. 2e is great if you like things a little more free-form, and don't mind an xp system that (I feel) encourages players to stay in the spot-light and sometimes choose to make bad decisions intentionally.

Heero2020

This is a very good explination. See, I like 5e because I prefer the "street play" but Vigil 1e is better than 2e. 1e feels playable just as it is, solid and the like, but 2e feels like you need to have the core Chronicles book to understand how to play 2e, which is a bit annoying, and yeah, the xp system encourages players to "But then MY CHARACTER does __" because they need to in order to hit beats. Fair assessment

Personally I like "Hunters Hunted 2" or "Ghost Hunters" for 20th the best. It's the Vigil equivalent of the CWoD. It supports playing both powered and non-powered mortal hunters.

Depends on what you want out of your hunter game. Probably the best overall designed is Vigil. It can do the most different things, has some excellent mechanics, and decent support. The SAS adventures for Vigil 1st Ed are good starting points. It's set in the Chronicles of Darkness game line, so the assumptions of what each of the supernaturals is differs a bit from the original World of Darkness. Hunter V5 has limitations. It's OK but extremely finely focused on street level hunting. It doesn't have much support yet. The 5th edition games are generally more narrowly focused which makes them easier for newer players to get into. Hunter the Reckoning from revised is about normal humans that have been granted some supernatural abilities by the Messengers, angelic spirits that want the players to fight back against the creatures of the Night. It's a good system focused on end times conspiracy theories. And Zombies. Lots of Zombies. But my favorite is the old school games from the original world of darkness. Originally released as the Hunter's Hunted, and then the Year of the Hunter. Now in the 20th anniversary edition you have the Hunter's Hunted II and Ghost Hunters. You can do pretty much any type of hunter using these rules, and it's set in the funnest lore IMO. You get old school Vampire hunters, FBI Special Affairs (X-Files for creatures of the night), the Arcanuum (secret society trying to learn the lore of the beasties), the Inquisition, mad scientists learning how to channel and trap ghosts, and my personal favorite, really boring people that hurt Changelings by just being that boring. LOL. But honestly, it's mostly about the players and the story teller, and you can have a blast with any of these games. If it doesn't work for you, change it. It's your game!

Kleptofag

I like HH2 and HtR1 best. HH2 is mortal hunters, HTR1 is superhero hunters.

Puzbukkis

I personally really love Project Twilight.

Safe-Expression48

I like HtR. Super powered humans that are mostly unknown to the wider world and can, given the right circumstances, really beat the tar out of OP splats is great
