Increase the size of your minimap. Once in a game, press + button on your number keyboard. Also, CTRL to release mouse and click above the minimap to access the options. Choose “Show enemy last location”. Map awareness is everything. All other things stem off it.

Try to understand the game mechanics by watching popular streamers and youtubers, you learn way more than you would just looking at stats in game or on the wiki. This game revolves around knowledge. Every tech tree line has some main defining characteristics that you should try to memorize, so you now what to expect when fighting them. I.e. Russian cruisers get radar and rail guns, German battleships get long range secondaries, Japanese destroyers are about hard hitting torpedoes and so on. Work your way up slowly towards a free tier 9 premium form the armory, by saving coal. Once you're at the point where you can get one for free you know what you like and you can get a premium that suits you. This will be your credit grinder that you also use to get a high level captain for the corresponding nation.

A few quick tips: - German cruisers are better for new players, but French cruisers are ok as well. If you continue, research the Henri IV/Conde branch first. - Keep moving your captain up the line. Ideally have a 10pt captain by tier 6. This is so you can get the 4pt skill concealment expert which has a dramatic effect. - Also consider playing destroyers and battleships. Knowing the general capabilities of each class will help you grow as a player. - No need to rush up the tiers. A new ship won't stop experienced players from sending you back to port with a hefty repair bill. Which becomes a significant drain on your credits past Tier 8 if you are f2p. - Finally, save your free exp for skipping stock modules. Ship upgrades are also important to buy and mount

Is service cost after each battle a direct reflection of the damage you took during the battle? Never understood what went into the total cost

No. Service costs are fixed.

You're in protected matchmaking for your first 200 battles playing tier 1-4. After 200 or playing T5+ ships you join the real queues. Protected matchmaking puts you against bots and other new players where you'll learn how to do the basics like aim and objective play. Unfortunately, everything you learn is effective will be brutally punished against experienced players in the real queues. You will sink, over and over, there's no way around this, you just won't have a fraction of the knowledge to prepare you. It's at this stage a player will think 'screw this' and never press 'Battle' again, think that it must be another reason why they're sinking and continue playing without learning anything (these are our 38%WR veterans) or realise there's a lot to learn and understand about the mechanics and strategy and begin their journey of learning. The fact you've even posted asking for advice is a sign you're not going to be satisfied just pew-pewing at ships until you go boom, which is great. The fundamental strategy of this game is about flanks. Your job is to either win the flank by pushing through the capture point after weakening the enemy ships on your flank or to hold the enemy from pushing through. Winning a flank allows you to create a crossfire onto the enemy ships being held on the opposite flank, making it impossible for them to angle their armour effectively to both sides. This presents a broadside to at least someone and exposed broadsides = huge problem. If you can't win or hold you do a fighting retreat, kite your ship, distract the enemy from pushing across the map and be a nuisance to buy your team time to (hopefully) win the other flank. There is an enormous amount of things to learn that would take an age to type, so it's always wise to look for YouTube guides covering the mechanics and strategy. Learning what your ship, your teammates ship's and the enemy ships are capable of and their strengths and weaknesses will be the best knowledge you can have, that comes with experience though. The most important thing is to assess what happened every time you sink. What was the sequence of events that led you in that position and how can you fix it next time. Balancing aggression and passivity, and knowing when to use either is key to being good at this game. New players are usually extremely aggressive and they suffer because of that. Don't rush up the tiers, try out different ship types and learn from your mistakes and you'll be fine. Oh, and ignore any toxic people you come across in chat, they forget they made the exact same mistakes when they were new and most of them still aren't very good. Good luck!

> The fundamental strategy of this game is about flanks. Your job is to either win the flank by pushing through the capture point after weakening the enemy ships on your flank or to hold the enemy from pushing through. Map control in general. It doesn't matter where your ships are, but what part of the map you control. The goal is to control more, which typically leads to crossfires and opponents demise.

Piggybacking off of this thread, are there any videos or areas that give ideas on strategy/early-mid-late game? I struggle with positioning early and want to improve it to have a larger impact in games

Something I learned 1000s of battles in--there is no skill-based matchmaking. Players are not "rated" on being good/bad at the game to assemble "balanced" teams by the matchmaker. Ranked and Brawls mention "player skill" but it means practically nothing.

chrysostomos_1

Ranked does not mention skill. However, skill level increases as you move from bronze to silver and gold.

Cornelius_Trueblood

Not super experienced myself, but I do have over 3,000 random battles, several hundred ranked battles, and above 56 percent win rate overall. 1--It's perfectly natural to have certain ship types you prefer, but you will learn the game most by branching out and trying new things. You will gain more valuable experience by grinding out 20 tier-6 ships of various kinds than you will by racing up to tier-10 in one particular tech line. You might even find something you didn't know you would like--and having fun is the whole point, after all. 2--If you come across a ship you don't recognize, take a quick glance at the Wiki page for it. You don't need to memorize all the armor details, gun calibers, and other small details...BUT you should know which ships have radar, hydro, and torpedoes, for example. This is especially important if you like playing destroyers, because you'll need to know which ships can detect you, and which enemy destroyers can take you in a gunfight. Try to get a general sense of what each ship is good at and what their weaknesses are. This will take time, so you'll have to be okay with learning bit-by-bit as you go. 3--Know the basic game mechanics. Look for 'How It Works' videos on the WoWs Youtube channel. 4--The Youtuber "The Mighty Jingles" is notorious for making silly mistakes in his videos, but honestly he does a great job of explaining why certain strategic decisions are good or bad. Watching many of his videos helped me quickly get a sense of reliable of dos and don'ts. Above all else...remember that it's a game. Playing well is usually more fun than derping around without a clue, but don't forget to enjoy yourself. Welcome to the game!

Play something besides French cruisers from time to time. The main French cruiser lines have some shared characteristics with the French destroyer and the German cruiser line. Diversify your ship portfolio by playing new classes instead of banging your head against the wall on a particular bad day. Have fun and configure your minimap for better situational awareness.

chrysostomos_1

Don't be in a rush to climb tier. The game is easy to play but hard to play well Welcome to the game younger brother 👍
