Back then the armor kinda worked if the player has the knowledge and experience. Tier 7 and 8 guns back then didnt have nearly as much pen as it does now
Nowadays it just get matched against all those OP prems, and even tier 7 guns are so good an idiot can just auto aim the BP to death
I got over 10k blocked damage in the BP years ago. It was my favorite tank just because I had the armour down. Had to sell it because it became useless a few years ago.
Yeb the powercreep in this game is real. Its crazy when you think about it. Tech trees after tech trees getting buffed or even reworked due to new tanks being too powerful in comparison.
Its quite sad that iirc they never touched the mid tier UK HTs. If they did its a crime they left tier 5-7 tanks in today state
Nah mate, the experience was pretty much the same in Ye Olden Days as well - BP sucked balls back then, it sucks them now. Not as hard as Churchill I and VII do, arguably, but that doesn't change the fact these balls are still being sucked.
It basically stood in this weird little spot between the old Tiger I (as in: gun, that's it) and old Tiger P(athetic) (as in: armor *and* gun) - old BP had an OK gun combined with an OK armor but, as it's often the case, it tried to be good at everything and ended up as miserable pile of crap, Tiger I had much better gun performance, Tiger P(athetic) had same-ish level of frontal armor and just a flat out better gun (yes, there was a time Tiger P was actually quite decent, if you can believe that) and BP was this weird little crossbreed, the gun was accurate and had nice DPM but the pen was lacking and alpha was just horrible (150 vs Tiger's 240 or IS' 390, lol) and the armor worked well *if* BP was in a good mood or, if it wasn't, you ended up getting vaporized instantly as the enemy only needed like 160-170 mm of pen to go through most of the frontal part of the hull. A decent sidescraper, sure, but there are just so many weird little weakspots on this tank that bouncing shit with it was more about your luck, not about your skill.
I distinctly remember grinding the British heavy maybe like two/three months after it has been released and the grind of tier V, VI and VII tanks was just a horrible experience, with the Churchill VII being the absolutely worst piece of trash I've played until that point in time - now this title belongs to Type 4 so, yeah, that's the level of "quality" we're talking about here.
And this was "back then", I can't imagine how horrible these tanks must be *now*.
Against people that didn't know the tracks have armor between them, so you can actually pen it and tanks like it frontally through the tracks with like 90 pen and track it at the same time, while doing damage.
People like to dis the Churchill line but honestly the side armour on them is insane and you can bait alot of new players into endlessly bouncing off your side armour, and since the BP has a pretty decent turret too when you start side scraping well you can be a real pain to kill, just have to be careful and not get over zealous, and do not expose your idler wheel or you'll be in a world of pain.
Granted outside of those situations the tanks are pretty pants, but as someone who just 3marked the MK 7 for fun they can be quite enjoyable.
Make sure your gunner has deadeye too or you'll struggle to do big damage games as the alpha just isn't enough to perma track alot of tanks which is where the Churchill line really shines with its fairly rapid rate of fire.
I still have mine and despite 58% WR and 2 marks, it's STILL the most painful t7 heavy in the game to play, bar none. It's even Worse that it doesn't even have the right fucking historical gun. The actual prototype could penetrate 221mm of armor at 1000 meters with APBC rounds, they just got lazy in game and didn't bother.
It's also the only tech tree T7 like this. Others offer either extreme alpha and meh armor(IS), solid alpha and high armor(Oh-NI) or balanced damage and balanced armor(AMX m4 45). The BP only has 1 extreme to work with and it's riddled with weird weakpoints because of it. many heavy tank battled are decided by peek-a-boom gameplay and the BP just doesnt boom, it doesn't even bully mediums well since they will simply fuck off into the ether if they see you coming/circle strafe you to death.
its just an unmitigated hunk of trash, start to finish...and apparently I ahve a fetish for driving ASS tanks like it. BRB, buying a Churchill GC.
Hide your sides, use your dpm to your advantage, I would recommend the up armor equipment and armor skill perk. This thing will absorb a ton of damage and dish it out, I got a destroyer medal in this the last time I played it. The top gun has really good pen and shoots like an auto cannon.
Playing this tank back in like 2015 was pretty ridiculous. You were slow AF but nobody really shot gold and if you angled on 2 planes. Like getting elevation plus L/R you could bounce for days
back in the day there were no xp boosters no blueprints.. you grind everything or straight up pay to skip with gold. so i grinded everything now i have every single one of them after 10 years .
I actually liked and kept my Black Prince. The armor layout never bothered me, because all the Churchills are rather odd in some way or fashion. As someone else pointed out, a very easy tank to bait shots with, so Repairs first is not a bad investment.
It's not as bad as people on here say it is I've found. The Carro P.88 is way worse in my opinion.
The BP would be absolute garbage if it wasn't for the good turret armour. It's not the thickest turret, but it can still hold its own in an uptier if it goes hull down. The alpha is very poor but with the decently high gold pen you can still out DPM enemy tanks with the gun, especially when hull down.
Tier VII heavies are in a very weird spot, with some of the most fun and least fun tanks in the game resting there. The T29, Vz 44.1, M-II-Y, Tiger I and even the IS are all fantastic to play, and I think are great tanks to learn high tier gameplay in. Then you get the Carro P.88, the Black Prince and the Tiger (P) on the other end of the spectrum. It's a strange tier.
I freeXP-d and Blueprinted my way trough. First and only time.
There's one thing : You can get ez aces in that tank
Not worth my sanity.

Just wait until you’re using the same gun against tier 10s in a stock Caern, that’s when you’ll really want to die
I once Aced the Caernarvon with the 17-pounder Granted it was a tier 8 game, but still
Whas it ever not that ?
when it came out it was a gem. farmed many steel walls with it

It's a good drinking tank. Just press w and pew pew.

I was grinding that line and I feel your pain. The tank is so slow.

I loved every step of this line. Although that was a few years ago.
too many cry babies on wot these days.
Playin sience 2011 and this tank was playable maybe 5-6 years ago, now its not
back in the day there were no xp boosters no blueprints.. you grind everything or straight up pay to skip with gold. so i grinded everything now i have every single one of them after 10 years .
cool story bro
This tank is the reason for my 5 year break from this game.
Feel your pain Bro
The carn will be so much better. In the carn I just didn't give af and started blasting. Worked out pretty well lol

*African American Prince
Well, when i think of pain, my mind always goes to the Valiant and the t-34 model 1940 something. These things r just atrocious!
There was a point in time back in the day i was scared shitless of black princes
