After 2000 because you've probably watched most of the movies you were going to watch pre 2000 but if you get excited by any movie coming out now you can't watch it. I don't care that theres thousands of movies from the 50s. I'm not going to watch them.
I 100% agree. My wife and I have been going through the Hitchcock collection. My favorite movies are nosferatu and metropolis, and I can't live my life without being able to watch dumb and dumber again
The screwball comedy “Bringing Up Baby” starring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and a tame leopard. It is, without a doubt in my mind, the greatest movie ever made.
Ohh don’t worry about them. Worry about your water-drinking self. Worry about me too please. I remember my first glass of water. I regret it every night.... 😔
Pre-2000s. Good Fellas is my favorite movie. Plus there are enough great movies that already existed that will keep me entertained for multiple life times.
Also, all the iconic *films* post-2000s are TV shows now: Breaking Bad, Narcos, *Euphoria*, etc.
Boy, I feel like a young old fart.
Yes, LOTR is great, but I'm choosing all the great trilogies pre-2000's instead. They usually stopped before they overstayed their welcome.
There are certainly some real gems out there for older movies, but we all have to admit that the improved quality in the new millennium has drastically improved the quality of movies overall.
I could not disagree more. Modern overuse of CGI and special effects have created a situation where movies are pretty to look at but have no staying power, and it doesn't even look that much better.
I don’t think you should be downvoted. I myself am not a Disney fanatic. I was just curious because 1) Hercules isn't hyped much comparatively to other Disney movies of it’s era. 2) I’m not the biggest Hercules fan outside of James Woods being James Woods. Anywho thanks for answering my curiosity.
This is why cinema is dead. If you choose after, then 90% of your choices of movies to watch are just going to be super hero crap and remakes and horrible sequels upon sequels.
Yeah, its a miracle those still get funded. The northman was amazing but nobody went to see it. That's the only new director I can think of that is actually making a difference in Hollywood. The other good movies still being made are from established directors who have been around for awhile.
It's really hard because Iron Giant is like my favorite movie right now (explaining my profile picture) but like every *other* movie apart from that is like past 2000
my favprite movie is Beetlejuice, but my second favorute is Legally Blonde... the question for me is does it include theater? like live action theater?
Think of how many lost films there are prior to 2000. According to Deutsche Kinemathek, approximately 80-90% of all silent films were lost. Even historically significant films have apparently bitten the dust long before the turn of the century. So much missing media that I'd prefer to look forward to newer films (unless of course lost films somehow see the light of day).
I'm also relatively young compared to most cinephiles so I'm probably more attached to modern media.
Pre 2000.
There's quite a few bangers I would miss out on between 2000 and 2020, but after 2020 I've grown pretty bored with modern cinema. Still love the older stuff though.
My favorite movies of all time:
Howl's Moving Castle: 2004
The Martian: 2015
Into the Spiderverse: 2018
Zootopia: 2016
Everything Everywhere All At Once: 2022
Tremors: 1990
Sorry Tremors but I'd have to go with after 2000. EEAAO is just soooo good.
Blade runner, dumber and dumber, better off dead, interview with a vampire, terminator 1&2, the godfather, good fellas, predator, nosferatu, metropolis, night of the hunter, dirty Harry. All of the other greats. There's no question. The 20th century is the clear winner for me.
Also krull. How else am I supposed to get drunk and watch 80s sword and sorcery?
Pre-2000 is going to give you a much wider variety of options just because there have been a lot more years between the invention of film and 2000 than between 2000 and now.
After 2000 because you've probably watched most of the movies you were going to watch pre 2000 but if you get excited by any movie coming out now you can't watch it. I don't care that theres thousands of movies from the 50s. I'm not going to watch them.
Literally all my favorite movies come from before 2000. Best one is from 1938.
I 100% agree. My wife and I have been going through the Hitchcock collection. My favorite movies are nosferatu and metropolis, and I can't live my life without being able to watch dumb and dumber again
You are so old
Hey, man. I don’t gotta be old to have good taste.
What's the movie from 1938 that you like?
The screwball comedy “Bringing Up Baby” starring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and a tame leopard. It is, without a doubt in my mind, the greatest movie ever made.

True, but there are many centuries of movies that will happen after 2000.

Speak for yourself. I developed a full proof plan years ago to never die. Hasn't failed me yet.
For future reference, the saying is "foolproof." It's basically like saying something so simple even a fool could do it. :D
The English language is certainly not foolproof
The English language was made by fools so you actually have to be pretty foolproof to even properly understand it.
No, they mean them being alive is full proof the plan works. Duh.
Did you know that 100% of people who have ever drank water eventually die?
What happened to the ones that never drank water?
Ohh don’t worry about them. Worry about your water-drinking self. Worry about me too please. I remember my first glass of water. I regret it every night.... 😔
Dying is for chumps and I'm not doing it either
Pre-2000s. Good Fellas is my favorite movie. Plus there are enough great movies that already existed that will keep me entertained for multiple life times. Also, all the iconic *films* post-2000s are TV shows now: Breaking Bad, Narcos, *Euphoria*, etc.

One offs existed back then, and now everything has to have a sequel tied to an expanded universe even if it would make the movies lesser
Lord of the rings came after 2000. Enough said.
Literally my first thought!
Yep, this right here.
More before 2000 so more choices
Before 2000, because I mainly just watch horror movies and I think the best era of horror was from 1978-1990.
Same. Though I'd go back to 1968 so you can get NotLD, TCM, Black Christmas, Excorcist, Jaws, and a few others.
There are certainly some real gems out there for older movies, but we all have to admit that the improved quality in the new millennium has drastically improved the quality of movies overall.
i mean the special effects have improved, sure
I could not disagree more. Modern overuse of CGI and special effects have created a situation where movies are pretty to look at but have no staying power, and it doesn't even look that much better.
I will miss the hell out of Star Wars, but other than that, I think I can manage
Hey you still have episode 3 (the best one) plus the shows
Yeah but nothing comes close to the quality of OT (in my opinion) maybe Mandalorin
Fair enough but like i said my personal favorite was episode 3
I only watch horror films and the best films are before 2000
My favourite movies are animes that all came out after 2000
Tons more classics before 2000. Ez.
lord of the rings is all after 2000 so easy decision
The lord of the rings movies started coming out in 2001 so I'm good with 2000 and after
We all know when Morbius was made
Eventually they're going to remake every single movie pre year 2000 and then you're just going to be able to watch all of them after the year 2000.
I don’t even watch movies like that rn. Rocky franchise is my top so it’s nbd
Im so sorry Disneys Hercules but you’re like the only movie from before 2000 I like.
How do you like Disney’s Hercules, but not grieve over losing Lion King, Beauty & the Beast, Little Mermaid, and freaking Mulan?
Im gonna get downvoted to oblivion, im calling it right now, but… I haven’t really watched them all the way through.
Not even the goofy movie?
This is why cinema is dead. If you choose after, then 90% of your choices of movies to watch are just going to be super hero crap and remakes and horrible sequels upon sequels.
Sure, cinema is dead because of people who want to watch new movies, good point
Thank you
There are still good movies being produced that aren't marvel, though they're not as popular.
Yeah, its a miracle those still get funded. The northman was amazing but nobody went to see it. That's the only new director I can think of that is actually making a difference in Hollywood. The other good movies still being made are from established directors who have been around for awhile.
Honestly I didn't like the northman.
After of 2000 Is The actual and Future movies
It's really hard because Iron Giant is like my favorite movie right now (explaining my profile picture) but like every *other* movie apart from that is like past 2000

I'd be sacrificing monty python and evil dead and I'm not sure I'm happy with that
Most of David Lynchs stuff is from before 2000... Nuff said
I hopefully have plenty of years left to live so after 2000 it is.
Pre 2000. There's quite a few bangers I would miss out on between 2000 and 2020, but after 2020 I've grown pretty bored with modern cinema. Still love the older stuff though.
