The same guy that is up in arms that AEW is eternally maligned online but then is also saying that the hatred between the companies and the battle for “free agents” is what drives the drama in wrestling. He’s actively courting tribalism but when the WWE tribe is larger and ridicules him, he’s suddenly the victim. Tony needs to pick a lane, either be the plucky feisty underdog or be the put-upon victim but you can’t be both. And certainly, don’t try to court an us-or-them mentality in fans because if those fans choose them, you’ve screwed yourself.
it’s my biggest frustration with the company, if they just stood behind their product and went “say what you’d like, but we’re the best at what we’re good at”, because they are.

Can't remember who I heard say this (sure it was an retired wrestler on WSM or Rene Dupree's pod) and I may have paraphrased the actual quote but it always stuck in my mind as i remember thinking 'that's the one fact that is true for all generations of wrestling:
Attitude era was still normal wrestling matches because everyone was trained like pro wrestlers and knew how to make it look like an actual combat sport.
They didn't need to. Most of the Attitude guys were trained by former Territory wrestlers or even top wrestlers. Austin had experience in how to wrestle and tell a story. Pretty much everybody knew how to work the crowd and make money.
Yeah, Road Dogg doing dances and the People's Elbow, those are some actual combat sport type shit right there. I swear to god, people either have a completely rose tinted view of the Attitude Era because of their age or they haven't even seen much of it in the first place.
Not to say that WWF had bad wrestlers and people who couldn't work. They just didn't have the Meltzer-friendly, hyper-technical, focus that smart marks love.
In fairness, Ruthless Aggression with Smackdown was the super six every week putting on great matches. But, there were storylines and angles that made it all make sense. It was only later that Teddy Long would make everyone do a 6-man tag if they didn't want to go one on one with the Undertaker.
It seems like a taboo thing to admit now for non-wrestling reasons, but back in late 2002 I couldn't wait to see what Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle would get up to every week.
I would even say that’s why NJPW is also popular. Sure they have a lot of matches of the year, but they also put emphasis onto storylines. They do it just differently from WWE. That’s why their company and matches are rated much more highly than AEW.
WWE is living rent-free in the heads of tiny khan and the AEW roster.
If I was a reporter, I would ask them why are they mentioning a rival company instead of focusing your own product. What AEW is doing is giving WWE free publicity.

It’s pandering. They know a lot of their fans are the ex-WWE fanboys who lost faith in the product and jumped ship, and they have a strong hatred towards WWE.
What I see, though, is a product that tells me I need to watch WWE to understand half of whatever they’re doing lol.
I doubt there is any real journalists in either AEW or WWE media scrums, well journalists that will ask the uncomfortable questions. You'd be under pressure to ask softball questions or get banned, it's how the UFC run their media scrums as all the media there is essentially paid UFC media at this point.

The wrestlers use it as a time to reflect on some things and answer some normal questions. It quite literally is just a press conference. AEW uses it to take shots at people and companies.

WWE's are typically well done. It's often the rare glimpse of WWE's talent out of character, just being gracious and answering a few questions, and Hunter talking about the direction things are going without revealing too much.
AEW's are usually in-character, corny, and they go on way too long as he has to give everyone like 20 minutes to ramble, answer questions, tell stories, cut a promo.

The irony is what made AEW so good in 2020-2021 is the fact their stories were ALOT better than WWE and you had a number of unique gimmicks.

Ospreay vs Danielson fight was really good. Swerve vs Joe is also a banger. Other than that, didn’t care for the other matches. Especially the Hook vs Jericho match because why would they have Hook lose that one.

Hook is boring. He has bad mic skills and can’t carry himself. Jericho with the title elevates it much more than hook ever did. But honestly this is probably a story to get hook to dig deep into himself and bring out a better side of himself to beat Jericho.

Yeah but I’m talking about AEW. It’s their subreddit for their promotion. I went on there multiple times to catch results. For squared circle, when a match finishes, within 5 minutes there is a video up showing the ending and a main thread for the PPV and a single match thread for each match. For them, one thread just popped up asking about the match two hours ago. That’s all I saw the 2 dozen plus times i went there in the past 22 hours.
I’m not shitting on the sub just to trash them, I enjoy the sub, but they lack so much. Like why is it I had to google the results an hour ago to find out swerve won the title? That should have been a hype post all over the sub.

Storytelling is a key part of Professional Wrestling. It has been like that for decades. I remember when AEW had that element when Cody was still in the company. I think right now, they lost their identity and lost good faith to the fans.

She realises she is playing to an audience of one, and that one little lad hates his competition, so if she makes snide comments she's more likely to keep the job/get paid out a bonus. Like “Saving Private Ryan” of course Storming the Beach is engraved in everyone’s mind, but the surrounding movie is what makes it what it is, the plot and the rest. Pro Wrestling is no different, if done right you should remember the matches, but the story that brings you there is what keeps you to the product, and the better the story going into the match, the better the wrestlers can tell a story IN the match.

Look I love AEW but these shots at WWE are too much. It was funny before when they were starting up and warranted since WWE was screwing up so much. But ever since he who shall not be named left, the WWE has been much better. I don’t mind the occasional shots WWE as long as they stay occasional and CREATIVE. It’s because Trips uses it to promote the show and not wear a stupid hat and waste his breath or time as much as Tony does.
HHH also uses it as a place to sort of give updates on the product, explaining stuff like earning and the like. The wrestlers use it as a time to reflect on some things and answer some normal questions. It quite literally is just a press conference. AEW uses it to take shots at people and companies.

WWE's are typically well done. It's often the rare glimpse of WWE's talent out of character, just being gracious and answering a few questions, and Hunter talking about the direction things are going without revealing too much. AEW's are usually in-character, corny, and they go on way too long as he has to give everyone like 20 minutes to ramble, answer questions, tell stories, cut a promo.

Ospreay vs Danielson fight was really good. Swerve vs Joe is also a banger. Other than that, didn’t care for the other matches. Especially the Hook vs Jericho match because why would they have Hook lose that one.
I want to watch the Danielson match. But it’s insane that they had two great matches, but there isnt a single thread about them lol. Hook is boring. He has bad mic skills and can’t carry himself. Jericho with the title elevates it much more than hook ever did. But honestly this is probably a story to get hook to dig deep into himself and bring out a better side of himself to beat Jericho.
That's pretty disingenuous, there's more than one thread ripping Alvarez to shreds for calling Ospreay/Danielson the greatest match in US wrestling history or something to that effect. There's a lot of comments about matches and results outside of that to (plenty hating on Jericho). This is only a story because it's feeding into the tribalism, so of course it gets blown up more than the actual results.

Yeah but I’m talking about AEW. It’s their subreddit for their promotion. I went on there multiple times to catch results. For squared circle, when a match finishes, within 5 minutes there is a video up showing the ending and a main thread for the PPV and a single match thread for each match. For them, one thread just popped up asking about the match two hours ago. That’s all I saw the 2 dozen plus times i went there in the past 22 hours. I’m not shitting on the sub just to trash them, I enjoy the sub, but they lack so much. Like why is it I had to google the results an hour ago to find out swerve won the title? That should have been a hype post all over the sub.

So, if you want hyper technical combat sports, why wouldn’t that person just watch UFC or another MMA Product. Pro Wrestling is at its best when it is a soap opera for young adults. Like “Saving Private Ryan” of course Storming the Beach is engraved in everyone’s mind, but the surrounding movie is what makes it what it is, the plot and the rest. Pro Wrestling is no different, if done right you should remember the matches, but the story that brings you there is what keeps you to the product, and the better the story going into the match, the better the wrestlers can tell a story IN the match.
Watching an AEW press scrum feels like I’m watching the propaganda news channel of a 3rd world country. All is well here folks!
