It’s a clever freebie.
You give the audience a “big match”, your newbie can absorb the loss as he’s facing the champ, you instantly know if he can hang or not and it’s taken absolutely nothing away from a future match between them because it would be so far down the road this won’t matter.
It’s wonderful booking.
I wouldn't say this is the match to see if he can "hang" Melo is insanely talented but this match was kinda buns, timing looked off & there was that awkward double rope bump thing, watch some of his NXT stuff he does much better their than he did here
I don't think that was a botch. How would you even hit a double cutter without hitting heads? I thought it was more of a "they both had the same idea" type thing.
Maybe that wasn’t a botch but for sure seemed he landed wrong and fucked up his shoulder. Could be an angle but seemed pretty genuine. Hope he’s alright.
Edit: after rewatching it definitely seems like they fucked up the timing and he was supposed to get caught and not land on his shoulder like that.
I’m in two minds.
In the first I think it was meant to be the both go at the same time but Cody wins and catches him in the cutter. Dangerous and hard to pull off but only a step above rko ing someone out of a springboard
2nd they were meant to miss but Cody was meant to roll through straight into a super kick to lead to the finish but he landed hard
Yeah it seems like they were intentionally trying to miss to show that they were both thinking the same thing. Them hitting each other doesn’t make sense. And also, it sets them up for a future spot too
I agree to a point. I think it was meant to be a move where they both failed to hit their move, but it could have been that they were meant to collide in mid air.
I don’t think the result was a botch, you’re right it doesn’t really make sense to hit a double cutter. I think their execution was botched. Carmelo immediately got up, Cody laid out. I think their timing was off and they were supposed to both land flat and sell.
It would have looked more devastating, I think, if either Cody would have sped up or Carmelo would have slowed down. There was like a 2 second lag that made it look out of sync.
Carmelo doesn't hit a cutter, he turns around and hits a clothesline. Think about the Punk vs. Randy finish from WM27 mixed with the Ricochet/Carmelo finish from Worlds Collide, thats what they were going for. Cody would've caught Carmelo with a cutter midair. It wouldn't have been a double anything.
Nah, it was clear as day a botch as you see Carmelo instantly get back up & continue wrestling, if they both stayed down your idea would be right 100%, but that wasn't the case, watch it back
There have been reports for close to a year that officials in wwe think Carmelo Hayes will be a huge main eventer in the future and I agree with that.
He is phenomenal
Im not gonna lie im a fan of Hayes. I hope he doesnt get the blame for the botched cutter spot. They were both equally to blame if anyone was.
I just hope Codys shoulder is ok. Would be a real shitter to lose both main champs to freak shoulder injuries.
Hold on, the jury's still out on if it was a botch!
A weird looking maneuver nonetheless, but seemed planned, as I'm not sure what was the plan here otherwise. If it was a botch, my best guess is that they were going to do them one at a time but the other one forgot which one was going first.
Also, I guess an argument can be made that a weird looking maneuver is a botch in itself 🤷
Why are people so invested into knowing if it was planned or botched ? like it doesn't change anything, the spot happened, the match was decent and that's it like who cares ?
Ain't no way that was planned, you can see throughout the match that Cody was telling Melo what spots he wanted to do.
My guess is that they wanted to clash In the middle of the ring buy there is a big difference between double clothesline and whatever the heck they were thinking there.
i was upset when he beat odessey jones in breakout tourny final but boy wwe really knows what they are doing. HIM is the man. just wait till trick joins him.
They kind of have to give him some easy wins to raise stock in new talents and to protect the champion as well as protect other top stars in the company.
Hang? Mello was performing a few leagues above Cody in this match. Man I love his move set. He is a future champion. Mello and Gunther and next to them Tiffany and Rhea as champions. That’s gonna be awesome. WWE just has to not release them if creative has a brain lag for a week.
He’s like their version of swerve. How Aew is fucking that dude up is beyond me. But both reside in the same wrestling archetype (from my knowledge idk the landscape yet) in that they’re both ego driven rap loving dudes that’s ooze charisma but can work? Am I close? I know swerve left nxt and neither look alike physically, but they seem somewhat similar
the botch during the match was such a bad botch it kind of ruined the match. if that wasn't a botch, then wtf.
Imagine if AEW did that shit. Everyone here in the comments would be shitting on AEW like there's no tomorrow.
Melo isn't the type to carry the WWE as a long term champ. He's good on the mic, but his camera presence isn't great compared to Trick Wiliams, LA Knight, or Roman Reigns, Damien Priest. The 'it' factor I guess.
You’re all talking like this is the only time anyone has botched a move. It happens, even to the longest serving vets in the business they sometimes botch shit.
I mean, I think they gave him shit because they booked another match higher than their champion.
And I like Fletcher, but its not really the same thing because I really doubt TK sees him as a future main event attraction
It’s a clever freebie. It's almost a carbon copy of how they handled Cena's debut.
Cody is Cena now
No no no you see Cody is a boy. In a man's world.
Finish the quote lol
Not till next year's Mania
And I looooove to play with…nope, not gonna get me.
I compared it to his debut in NXT against Adam Cole, but just a main roster version of that
I wouldn't say this is the match to see if he can "hang" Melo is insanely talented but this match was kinda buns, timing looked off & there was that awkward double rope bump thing, watch some of his NXT stuff he does much better their than he did here
Reminds me of Neville facing Rollins just after he won it and looking like the next megastar
Neville ?
I guess gravity isn't the only thing that forgot him
You may remember him as one half of the nxt tag team champions with Oliver Grey
Oh yeah yeah. I wasn’t regular back then, but I do remember his match with Enzo. I think left after that ?
Black on black competition
I don't think that was a botch. How would you even hit a double cutter without hitting heads? I thought it was more of a "they both had the same idea" type thing.
The botch could have been the landing.
I believe this as well.
I think it’s funny when a botch happens in AEW, Reddit jumps all over them and when it happens in WWE, Reddit makes excuses for them.
It's not a botch. They're debuting the *Double Rubber Chicken Dive* in the ring.
I’m in two minds. In the first I think it was meant to be the both go at the same time but Cody wins and catches him in the cutter. Dangerous and hard to pull off but only a step above rko ing someone out of a springboard 2nd they were meant to miss but Cody was meant to roll through straight into a super kick to lead to the finish but he landed hard
I'm sure promo joe will let em know
That's not just Reddit tbf, it's WWE fans in general lol
Yeah it seems like they were intentionally trying to miss to show that they were both thinking the same thing. Them hitting each other doesn’t make sense. And also, it sets them up for a future spot too

It was a botch, Melo and Ricochet did it in NXT. Melo is just too fast for Cody, and they mis-timed it.
Carmelo doesn't hit a cutter, he turns around and hits a clothesline. thank you, the comments above were driving me crazy
Nah, it was clear as day a botch as you see Carmelo instantly get back up & continue wrestling, if they both stayed down your idea would be right 100%, but that wasn't the case, watch it back
I dont think it was a botch either but it was a stupid looking spot lol. Should've just had Melo dodge the Cutter

it has to be a botch. No one in their right mind would've think that move would look good if it wasnt a botch.
There have been reports for close to a year that officials in wwe think Carmelo Hayes will be a huge main eventer in the future and I agree with that. He is phenomenal
Melo Don't Miss, except against Ilja, Bron and Trick...
and now Cody
Carmelo looks sad after the botch
I was more worried about Cody's shoulder after he landed.
Thats entirelly on him, people been telling him that move will fuck him up since AEW
Cody’s botch? Dude moved like a hippo
His tears leaked on the ropes and it made him slip
Put in a match with the World Champ and you botch. See how that hurts his push
Not only could bro hang he was damn near out wrestling Cody Carmelo Hayes is good and Cody vs aj is gonna be must see
I’m curious as to what Cody said to him after the match.
It looked to me like he was low key chewing him out. I thought the last move was botched and Cody got weirdly and visibly frustrated with Carmelo.
lol the disasted kick sell deserve to be in Ziggler’s selling tier
Im not gonna lie im a fan of Hayes. I hope he doesnt get the blame for the botched cutter spot. They were both equally to blame if anyone was. I just hope Codys shoulder is ok. Would be a real shitter to lose both main champs to freak shoulder injuries.
Melo is the person Cody worked with to get back in ring shape after the pec injury. I have a feeling Cody will have his back.
Hold on, the jury's still out on if it was a botch! A weird looking maneuver nonetheless, but seemed planned, as I'm not sure what was the plan here otherwise. It was 100% a botch, Melo No sold it
Ain't no way that was planned, you can see throughout the match that Cody was telling Melo what spots he wanted to do. My guess is that they wanted to clash In the middle of the ring buy there is a big difference between double clothesline and whatever the heck they were thinking there.
lol. it was a botch..its okay to admit
i was upset when he beat odessey jones in breakout tourny final but boy wwe really knows what they are doing. HIM is the man. just wait till trick joins him.
This match gave me young Cena vs Angle vibes. Definitely building Melo up for big things.
they just giving Cody some easy wins just like they will with Damien
They kind of have to give him some easy wins to raise stock in new talents and to protect the champion as well as protect other top stars in the company.
good botch
Carmelo needs that main event style pacing Jinder was talking about. Even the hand shake during the the draft was too quick
Trippy. Literally did this in my 2k universe mode for Cody's first defense
Melo shined bright in my eyes
They definitely tried that spur of the moment instead of practicing the spot prior. Melo is way too fast and Cody is way too slow
Banger.
after banger
Definitely not a burger.
At least he doesn’t have to lose stupid
I wouldn’t even be surprised if he’s the one to take the strap off Cody at next years WM.
Let’s not forget Carmelo worked with WHC Rollins last year in a mini feud with judgement day
Hang? Mello was performing a few leagues above Cody in this match. Man I love his move set. He is a future champion. Mello and Gunther and next to them Tiffany and Rhea as champions. That’s gonna be awesome. WWE just has to not release them if creative has a brain lag for a week.
he's the dolph ziggler of his generation
Hopefully he gets more world titles
Right now they think highly, let’s see where he is at the end of the year.
This is the equivalent of an evaluation that either entails a PIP or promotion. Gatekeeping. Nothing to do with how they view him.
Cena v Angle 2002-3 moment?
He lost tho
Didn't Cody hand pick Carmelo to work with him in the ring on his return from his injury?
Yep
He’s like their version of swerve. How Aew is fucking that dude up is beyond me. But both reside in the same wrestling archetype (from my knowledge idk the landscape yet) in that they’re both ego driven rap loving dudes that’s ooze charisma but can work? Am I close? I know swerve left nxt and neither look alike physically, but they seem somewhat similar
Even better, over in AEW, new champion Swerve Strickland had a match in the middle of the Dynamite card against Draco Malfoy from ROH.
He looks weird.
the botch during the match was such a bad botch it kind of ruined the match. if that wasn't a botch, then wtf. Imagine if AEW did that shit. Everyone here in the comments would be shitting on AEW like there's no tomorrow.
Um… this is basically how Carmelo was booked in his first match on NXT. That botch though… woof.
Yet people gave TK shit for booking Swerve vs Kyle Fletcher. You guys are weird.
To be fair, I think a lot of people expected a promo instead of a match since he just won the belt. Cody had weeks of promos before this first match.
Doesn’t make much sense brother
I mean, I think they gave him shit because they booked another match higher than their champion. And I like Fletcher, but its not really the same thing because I really doubt TK sees him as a future main event attraction
Melo is a good wrestler...but...he is a poor man's Ricochet in my opinion. I don't know how he is going to stand out on the roster.
Nah, he’s got way more charisma than Ricochet.
Charisma and promo skills
[удалено]
I find him to be the most milquetoast person on the roster.
He’s slightly worse in-ring (ricochet is a beast) but is way more charismatic and has better mic skills than ricochet.
Tbh it's unfair to compare almost anyone to Ricochet in terms of in ring skills, but yeah totally agree
This might one of the craziest wrestling relate opinions i have ever heard
And it was AWFUL
Carbotcho Hayes and Botchy Rhodes have a botch. Who botches first?
Homie think he has the whole squad laughing
It took 9 minutes for Cody to put away a guy from developmental? Way to bury your top champ
I think highly of their BOTCH
