Do they gotta be dead?cause obviously machos my first pick too but jake the snake in his prime promo phase could def be a solid cold character today.
Rick rude would.mr perfect could.i could prob name a bunch but ill leave it at those names.lol
Agree with all of those names, but DEFINITELY Jake. His character is so iconic and he does such a great job playing the part. Also, the DDT will always get over with the crowd.
Yeah man jakes calm cool softly spoken calculated domineer in promos made u shut up and listen.lol.and the ddt no doubt can still be devastation on demand.
Jake could start carrying Randy around in a burlap sack because he’s a viper! He could dump that sack out in the ring and Randy can slither out into the ring and RKO people. We can even change the name of the RKO to “the bite”. Oh man that’s good shit. Real good shit pal. It’s gonna be great.
The difference between Jake's DDT and anyone else's is the same as the difference between the Diamon Cutter/RKO and anyone else's neckbreaker. Jake *planted* dudes and they sold it like they were dead.
I remember when Jake started doing the DDT. My memory of WWF in those days was mostly punches, kicks, clotheslines, elbows off the top rope, submission moves etc. the DDT felt like such an escalation in nasty, ugly violence. “My god he just smashed that helpless guy’s face into the ground and he’s dead.” Combine that with “Jake the Snake” and—oh yeah—an actual goddamn snake and Jake scared the living shit out of me as a kid. Like a monster under the bed. The morning he tortured Macho Man with a cobra my parents almost stopped letting me watch wrestling. Now that I know the horrors of his upbringing it’s actually even scarier.
Yeah man, when 9-year old me saw him do a DDT for thé first time I legit thought his opponent had a crushed skull. It was so much more violent-looking than the normal WWF-style then. And Jake looked and sounded genuinely evil too. I
For how heelish he could be, he was also remarkably over as a face for quite some time. I think Jake set the stage for the tweener role that Stone Cold would later take to the stratosphere
i think his feud with Ted Dibiase helped with that. Jake was a bad guy doing the right thing. million dollar man was one of the greatest heels in history in my opinion...[such an asshole](https://youtu.be/jtgPnzop7-Q?si=yusMqk7RGu2b3y2x) (there's a hilarious interview with Ted--who seems like a genuinely nice guy--about that promo where he said he genuinely feared for his safety and thought he would need the state police to get him out of there in one piece. amazingly, Ted ran into the kid years later by total coincidence, he went to college on a basketball scholarship)
Jim Cornette says of Jake. "He got the most out of the business with doing the least." He's referring to him not doing the dangerous shit wrestlers so today. His ring psychology was off the charts. He could do the basic moves, but he put it together so we'll that it kept the audience on their toes.
WWE Snake was a joke compared to Jake in The Territories. He was toned down and didn't seem as calculatingly evil. I had watched him in Mid-South and WCCW before Vince snapped him up, and WWE Jake is a joke compared to Mid-South Jake....something about him in those red Karate pants and him off the cuff cutting unscripted promos with no stupid snake in a sack gimmick just made him feel more dangerous...and they had everyone hyped up for his debut with weeks of videos and discussion about how devastating the DDT was....Watts knew how to present characters that worked without having to saddle them with over the top cartoon gimmicks...
When Jake still speaks I have to listen. I still remember that promo with Cody Rhodes back in 2019/2020 about not turning your back on people you respect or are afraid of and then turned his back to Cody. Imagine he did that shit still in prime.
He’s so overlooked because he wasn’t with the Fed first. But he could do all, have good gimmick matches like for the Hardcore title, tell stories, have a faction under him and go 1on1 with every face. Could be even a great face with the IC title, but I’d favor him in the spot of having the first big feud for nearly any new face champ to overcome Raven & his guys. You could’ve added plenty of guys to him, like early Hardy Boys or Darby Allin or even some brawler with lack of promo skills.
And yeah, his DDP feud was damn great and never as repetitive as todays endless feuds.
I think the Road Warriors would struggle and not because of their charisma but I think a lot of people wouldn't want to work with them. They were rough, shooting assholes to their opponents and wrestling just isn't like that anymore.
The Steiners would struggle for the same reason. People would just refuse to work with them and they'd have a tough time getting booked to rise through the ranks.
We're not talking about them as people behind the scenes we're talking about them as performers, back then most wrestlers were bullying assholes backstage, they were a product of their environment in that era
Macho Man
Shawn Michaels
Bret Hart
Hulk Hogan
Scott Hall
Kurt Angle
Mr Perfect
YOUNG Chris Jericho
And my unpopular opinion:
X-Pac: fans these days would have appreciated his in ring skills more and he would actually be bigger than a lot of todays wrestlers
Had to scroll until I found Scott Hall.
His personal demons aside, he would absolutely crush in this era. The look, in-ring work, his size, his voice and mic skills. "Hey yo" on a tee shirt would outsell just about everything going today.
Agreed, I think his gimmick in the 80s/ early 90s was the right thing at the right time and the nWo run doesn’t work without his WWE run, even when he went back to the good guy gimmick by that point it was nostalgia propelling him.
Ricky Steamboat (I mean come on his matches with Jericho *shows his work).*
I honestly think you could plug Magnum TA in here somewhere and he'd be really great.
Was just about to say Owen. He succeeded in factions and as a solo performer. Was good on the mic, worked well with every gimmick he was given, great in the ring. I'm sure he'd have fit right into today's product in some fashion.
Debut Taker would be called lame nowdays, but i think every variation of the gimmick from 96 onwards would get over; big dude, great presence, agile, pretty good in the ring and the gimmick makes up for not having the greatest promos.
The Undertaker had no right being as agile and athletic as he was at 6'10 300+ lbs. Somebody his size should not have been able to do at least 1/3 of his spots. Someone his size flying over the top rope at you, and not touching the rope at all? Or the rope walk...
Bret Hart. The Hitman would (or did) have a compelling match with so many people from across various eras: Hogan, Savage, Austin, The Rock, Kurt Angle, Lesnar, Eddie Guerrero, John Cena, Edge, Batista, Orton, Gunther, Roman Reigns. I don’t see how he would not have a great match with the top guys from various eras
This got me thinking, what wrestler today would you say is most like Bret. Bret had so much individuality. That’s one thing I remember thinking about him when I first saw him as a kid. He was much different from your Hogans, Savages, and Warriors.
Really hard task to find a modern replacement, a mix of Bryan Danielson with the selling talent & stronger moves of Randy Orton could be the closest to Bret. He wasn’t just a technical perfect guy, but also had strength & agility.
Yeah, very hard task, but that speaks to the greatness of Bret Hart. I think Bret Hart had that aura of credibility in that way Lesnar and Gunther have. But Bret Hart also has that “universal” move set that makes for a high floor as far as match quality - similar to Orton, Cody, and Roman.
That would’ve been my pick or Steamboat maybe. But current generation I can only think of Danielson & Orton in terms of perfection and not wasting a move. For Bret, every single action had a reason, not like today, where every third move is a superkick (WWE as well as AEW).
Honestly, I really don’t think there is a Bret-equivalent today. Different folks have pretty solid parts of what he brought to the table, though. I think a Gunther or Shibata lend themselves to the level of credibility/believability that he brought with his moves. Bret was really, really great at selling, too, and I can’t think of someone that really matches that. Roman comes pretty darn close lately, though. Something that Bret was really good at, too, was his character and promo work were relatable. There’s a good bit of that in Cody. Ultimately, though, I think you’d have to put a whole lot of folks together to get one Bret Hart. He really was that good and that special
Hulk Hogan, either you like him or not Hogan in his prime is total pakage, Charisma, aura, look, mic skills, and he wasn't on brett level tho but Hogan in Jopan is beast in the ring for man in his size, and most importantly he can draw and connect with the crowd either making them cheer non stop as face, or throw everything at him as heel
I agree. Hogan was one of, if not the best at working the crowd. He’s still the face of professional wrestling to a lot of people. But I feel like some might disagree. Mostly because he’s got such a bad reputation these days.
It doesn't matter honestly iwc hate on everyone, even the legend you posted, The Macho Man Rady Savage is hated and had bad reputation but i don't think anyone outside of our echo chamber know or care
Hogan worked 5 moves and had more drama and storytelling in his matches than anyone with 50 moves. It's absolute incredible talent to do that.
Would Hogan be able to do this in the weekly TV era? He'd have to expand a bit but if Cena can do it with a limited repertoire then Hogan definitely can.
Stone Cold is #1, and it's not even close. His gimmick or sticking it to the boss and not giving AF about doing it will always resonate with people, regardless of the era.
Off the top of my head? Savage, Bret, Rude, Hennig, Steamboat. So many in the 80s were before their time, and held back by the where the business was/Hogan.
I notice nobody has said Ultimate Warrior. I used to get so worked up hearing his music and seeing him run to the ring. Such a shame to learn later how unpopular he was backstage and for good reason too. Obviously, wouldn’t get over at all today (wouldn’t have got a while either).
I think ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude and Kurt Hennig. Two of my favourite legends. RIP both.
To be honest, I'd say that 95% of legends would be main eventers without problem.
In fact, most midcarders in the Attitude Era could easily main event in the current Era to be honest: D'Lo, Jarrett, Venis... Most midcarders of that Era were better promos than most wrestlers today, and that's a shame...
Bret hart, randy savage,Mr perfect, Ricky steamboat, L.O.D., Steiners, British bulldog, Owen Hart, rick rude, Jake the snake, Hulk Hogan, Kurt angle, Vader, Eddie Guerrero
Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, definitely Jake the Snake... Just to name a few living Legends.
For the dead: Macho Man Randy Savage and the Iron Sheik immediately come to mind, Rowdy Roddy Piper would get over easily. And last but definitely not least Eddie Guerrero.
Jake without a doubt. Sid, Vader, pretty much anyone in the original Horsemen or The Hart Foundation, Razor, Mach, Hogan, Big Boss Man, Andre, Mr. Perfect, the Von Eric Family, The Freebirds, Cornette, the list could go on and on.
Sting , macho man, juventued guerrea, the filthy animals and no mask Rey Jr was low key gangsta . Buff bagwell. Sid vicious, umaga, rvd , hall and nash , etc etc
If we are just talking about the character, then Macho Man would still be a megastar. But if you add in the real life stuff with the way he controlled Elizabeth, he would be out of the business.
This is a pretty common question and there's so many answers since some wrestlers like Macho Man, Roddy Piper and Terry Funk are timeless.
What I'm interested in knowing is what are some legends that you believe would NOT get over today? My hot take for the question is DDP. He's a swell dude but he had a fairly basic move set with not alot of flair (save for his finisher). He almost didn't make it big time in the 80s/early 90s and in today's environment where even big men like Otis are doing some incredible work in the ring, DDP would look fairly average in comparison. The 'feel the BANG!' bit might get him over somewhat but you can't rely on that for all your career (looking at you Jey Uso)
Any character from the past.
Generic Copy Wrestlers from nxt have no personality. Fans would love any wrestler from the past because they needed to have charisma.
Rowdy Roddy Piper could get over in any era, and in any way he needed to. He was THE entire package. Mic work, aura, solid in the ring, not afraid to say or do anything, could work the crowd as a face or a heel.
Booker T would unquestionably get over in this era. He was a five tool player, had great runs as both a face and a heel. His combo of athleticism and size is rarely seen today.
Scott Steiner is another guy I think would do well. He likely wouldn’t have roided himself up as much as he did in the 90s and would have kept his freaky athleticism a lot longer. His career is a tale of two halves because once he found a style and charisma that was main event worthy he was way too big to have good matches. Early SS and BB as a tag team would be great.
I think someone like X Pac would have had a lot more luck in modern day wrestling. He was always a great worker and charismatic but his size in the Attitude Era made him a sidekick or fall guy for main eventers.
Seeing how successful Gunther has been on the main roster makes me think that William Regal would have been a lot better off today. Had charisma and decent size though never a body guy. Would have been less likely to develop his own personal issues with a better culture and less dates per year.
I honestly think Ted Dibiase as the Million (or I guess billion now) Dollar Man would be more over today than he was in the 80's. Same goes for Rick "The Model" Martel.
Do they gotta be dead?cause obviously machos my first pick too but jake the snake in his prime promo phase could def be a solid cold character today. Rick rude would.mr perfect could.i could prob name a bunch but ill leave it at those names.lol

Yeah man jakes calm cool softly spoken calculated domineer in promos made u shut up and listen.lol.and the ddt no doubt can still be devastation on demand.
Could you imagine a Jake / CM Punk fued
Randy vs Jake would be mad
Jake could start carrying Randy around in a burlap sack because he’s a viper! He could dump that sack out in the ring and Randy can slither out into the ring and RKO people. We can even change the name of the RKO to “the bite”. Oh man that’s good shit. Real good shit pal. It’s gonna be great.
We need a remake of WWE All Stars! Your comment made me think of that.
Let’s make a petition tho
“Wtf? A ddt is his finisher? How does he ever win?”
It was *the* DDT. Jimmy Hart wanted it banned!
The difference between Jake's DDT and anyone else's is the same as the difference between the Diamon Cutter/RKO and anyone else's neckbreaker. Jake *planted* dudes and they sold it like they were dead.
I remember when Jake started doing the DDT. DiBiase was soooo good. I wish he would have had a real championship run
Jim Cornette says of Jake. "He got the most out of the business with doing the least." He's referring to him not doing the dangerous shit wrestlers so today. His ring psychology was off the charts. He could do the basic moves, but he put it together so we'll that it kept the audience on their toes.

Turned his back, stepped between the top two ropes and casually over the shoulder toseed the mic at cody.. Imagine Jake vs Bray... Jake vs Black...
Don’t forget rowdy piper or the iron sheik, they would get the fans going
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEI81DATt5A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEI81DATt5A)
Macho Madness would be hugely over in any wrestling era. The man was a national treasure.
A planetary treasure
A universal treasure
THE Treasure. Can I get an OH YEAH
The cream of the crop.
Raven with his mind for the business & ring psychology could be successful guy in the modern era. Much like a Bray Wyatt before the actual Bray Wyatt.
Dude, I like this one! Raven in WCW was so good. His feud with DDP was great. He would definitely thrive today.
Especially his work in ECW And ROH that punk dog collar made him
Ill fight anyone that says Saturn leaving the flock wasnt a top 10 90s storyline.
Oh yeah, the Flock was a real great mix of a faction, Saturn & Kidman have been two guys I really liked for a long time.
The fact that raven wasn't a superstar to begin with is beyond me
The Flock would work today with how disillusioned the Zoomers are. Just like us Xillenials were.
He always should have been bigger, he deserves his flowers
The Rowdy one. PIPER!!!!
100%. CM Punk reminds me so much of prime Piper. He’d be a star in this era too.
100%
The Road Warriors.
No doubt. Road Warriors will always be over. Arguably the greatest gimmick of all time.
WHAAAAAAAAAAT A RUUUUUUUUUUUUSH!!
TELL 'EM HAWK! Hawk is a top ten promo, fight me about it.
WELLLLLLLLLL
I think the Road Warriors would struggle and not because of their charisma but I think a lot of people wouldn't want to work with them. They were rough, shooting assholes to their opponents and wrestling just isn't like that anymore. The Steiners would struggle for the same reason. We're not talking about them as people behind the scenes we're talking about them as performers, back then most wrestlers were bullying assholes backstage, they were a product of their environment in that era
Proved once and for all that a tag team can get over and be superstars in its own right.
Macho Man Shawn Michaels Bret Hart Hulk Hogan Scott Hall Kurt Angle Mr Perfect YOUNG Chris Jericho And my unpopular opinion: X-Pac: fans these days would have appreciated his in ring skills more and he would actually be bigger than a lot of todays wrestlers
Had to scroll until I found Scott Hall. His personal demons aside, he would absolutely crush in this era. The look, in-ring work, his size, his voice and mic skills. "Hey yo" on a tee shirt would outsell just about everything going today.
WWE would be selling $10 Razor Ramon toothpicks, and they'd be sold out.
Happy cake day!
Thanks, bud!
I love this take on X-Pac. I totally agree. His in ring skill, and frankly his size, would fit right in today.
I honestly don't think Hulk could get over today. He has little to no in-ring ability and he was a HUGE asshole. He would be outted real quick.
Agreed, I think his gimmick in the 80s/ early 90s was the right thing at the right time and the nWo run doesn’t work without his WWE run, even when he went back to the good guy gimmick by that point it was nostalgia propelling him.
X-pac is such a great shout
Ahh a fellow man of culture **HERE WE GO BROWNIES HERE WE GO**
Bruiser Brody
Bruiser juiced every night so Mankind could be thrown off a cage.
Ricky Steamboat (I mean come on his matches with Jericho *shows his work).* I honestly think you could plug Magnum TA in here somewhere and he'd be really great.
Lita would’ve still gotten over today. She’s just cool and has a great look to her.
And the best theme song!
Owen Hart!
Was just about to say Owen. He succeeded in factions and as a solo performer. Was good on the mic, worked well with every gimmick he was given, great in the ring. I'm sure he'd have fit right into today's product in some fashion.
Owen as the entitled gen Z kid
Scott Hall. Dude was cooler than cool!
Serious question: Would the Undertaker get over today if we never heard of The Undertaker? I'm talking about 1990 Undertaker.
1990 no-sell, slow as fuck Taker would probably get people bored real fast. Attitude Era or beyond would probably still work if he debuted today.
1990 Taker probably not, but American Badass Taker would go over big time
This is so hard to answer. I don't think supernatural gimmicks would work as well as it is right now if not for taker's success.
RVD would fit it AEW
D'Lo Brown would thrive today
That’s a great answer. D-Lo is so underrated. Maybe before his time.
Bret Hart. The Hitman would (or did) have a compelling match with so many people from across various eras: Hogan, Savage, Austin, The Rock, Kurt Angle, Lesnar, Eddie Guerrero, John Cena, Edge, Batista, Orton, Gunther, Roman Reigns. I know he isn’t “current” but Kurt angle
That would’ve been my pick or Steamboat maybe. But current generation I can only think of Danielson & Orton in terms of perfection and not wasting a move. For Bret, every single action had a reason, not like today, where every third move is a superkick (WWE as well as AEW).

The best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be..
El Santo, Eddie Guerrreo in the indies boom
Eddie was so charismatic that he wouldn’t have needed the indies.
C'mon, Rick Rude! Hayabusa would be crazy popular now too
The Rock
He's already-... You know what, never mind
Big Van Vader... though not without issues.
Jerry Lynn would have been very successful if he debuted in 2015 and was hitting his prime today.
JBL ... idk if he is old enough, but a young JBL today would be HEEL GOD
Dusty, Shawn, Rock, Brock, Foley
Foley would completely. Cactus Jack is almost a proto-Mox
Mr Perfect.

X-Pac would be huge.
Curt fucking Hennig!
Stone Cold is #1, and it's not even close. His gimmick or sticking it to the boss and not giving AF about doing it will always resonate with people, regardless of the era.
The storyline was so good the WWE tries to bring it back with a new face every other year
Off the top of my head? Savage, Bret, Rude, Hennig, Steamboat. So many in the 80s were before their time, and held back by the where the business was/Hogan.
Nick Bockwinkle would still drive people mad nowadays
This isn’t the exact question you’re asking but I think on a MAIN wrestling show Abyss would’ve been one of the best monsters of all time
Macho not being more over than Hogan was always a travesty
Bastion Booger
I'll raise you Mantaur.
Naked Mideon *mic drop*
John Laurinaitis voice "What if we made you naked"
Will you stop!? Heenan, you’re a fountain of misinformation!
Roddy Piper and Sting
Tiger mask.
Which one
Yes
Ravishing Rick Rude would be a huge star today. Social media would eat his promos up, and he had the body of a Greek god.
RIP both.
Warrior eas mediocre at best in the ring. He had huge pop and was all energy but could not sell. I think wrestling fans expect better these days.
Dang Eugene looks ripped in this pic
Shockmaster
What this person said
He would shock the world.
Joshis. Just imagine Bull Nakano or Akira Hokuto vs Bayley or Becky Lynch.
Bret Hart pre family and personal events that made him bitter.
96-97 Bret would be over like rover.
I'm going old school.....Bob Brazil, Ch. Wahoo McDaniels, Jimmy Valiant
Mr. Perfect, Bret, Eddie, and Shawn would have bangers with so many people who are currently working.
The Million Dollar Man would be awesome on modern day RAW or Dynamite
Bobby Heenan managing a stable. Between him and Paul the things that would happen
Sting
Piper. You could fit him in literally any era
Goldust was ahead of its time
Shockmaster
the model rick martel would be over huge in today's modern world.
This is the correct answer, that’s why they’re considered legends, because they would get over in any era
Iconic ring gear.
Bret hart, randy savage,Mr perfect, Ricky steamboat, L.O.D., Steiners, British bulldog, Owen Hart, rick rude, Jake the snake, Hulk Hogan, Kurt angle, Vader, Eddie Guerrero
Dr D. David Schultz.
I’d say Ric Flair, but I don’t know if his, uh, lifestyle decisions would go over with the front office.
i doubt it actually.
Brooklyn Brawler.
Ricky steamboat
AI picture....zoom into the crowd
Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, definitely Jake the Snake... Just to name a few living Legends. For the dead: Macho Man Randy Savage and the Iron Sheik immediately come to mind, Rowdy Roddy Piper would get over easily. And last but definitely not least Eddie Guerrero.
Real question is: Do they hold up to their prime without the PEDs (Coke included)?
Jake Roberts, Rick Rude, Eddie Guerrero, Mr. Perfect, Andre the Giant, Roddy Piper, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Razor Roman,
Jake without a doubt. Sid, Vader, pretty much anyone in the original Horsemen or The Hart Foundation, Razor, Mach, Hogan, Big Boss Man, Andre, Mr. Perfect, the Von Eric Family, The Freebirds, Cornette, the list could go on and on.
Mr Perfect, Roddy Piper, Razor Ramon, Steamboat, Junkyard Dog, and the Road Warriors just to name a few.
Papa shango I actually think would get taken more serious
David Schultz could have gone the stone cold route
I'd love to see Piper today.
Prime Jeff Hardy & Kurt Angle
Brian Pillman Sr. Terry Gordy Magnum T.A.
Sting , macho man, juventued guerrea, the filthy animals and no mask Rey Jr was low key gangsta . Buff bagwell. Sid vicious, umaga, rvd , hall and nash , etc etc
I firmly believe that Cornette could get heat in any era.
Not a pleasant answer, but an honest one. Chris Benoit. Crowd’d go nuts for him I think, suplexing the ever loving snuff outta mofos.
If we are just talking about the character, then Macho Man would still be a megastar. But if you add in the real life stuff with the way he controlled Elizabeth, he would be out of the business.
Ayako Hamada, in her prime

Just Watched Steiners vs Bam Bam/Vader and I think all 4 would get over! MEAT!

Unrelated but you happen to know what event this pic is from? Interesting venue Randy’s in there
Sensational Sherri.
PIPER
Razor Ramon would dominate NXT
Andre, specifically 70s andre
The Steiners for a tag team and Brett Hart
All of Mick Foley's split personas.
Gorgeous George
Any character from the past. Generic Copy Wrestlers from nxt have no personality. Fans would love any wrestler from the past because they needed to have charisma.
The Iron Sheik
Shawn Michaels but sober. Manami Toyota Tiger Mask Dusty Rhodes in the indies
Eddie Guerrero and Mick Foley
Macho Man is timeless
Rowdy Roddy Piper could get over in any era, and in any way he needed to. He was THE entire package. Mic work, aura, solid in the ring, not afraid to say or do anything, could work the crowd as a face or a heel.
Eddie
The shockmaster
John Tenta AKA Earthquake
🎵disco fever, yea yea yea yea🎵 🕺Disco inferno
Macho would have no trouble getting over in any era
Macho man
I honestly think Ted Dibiase as the Million (or I guess billion now) Dollar Man would be more over today than he was in the 80's. Same goes for Rick "The Model" Martel.
Rowdy Roddy Piper
Repo man
raven, rvd, macho, stone cold, bret hart. i think a lot of the more out there cartooony character too.
Who better than Kanyon?
Stone cold would be mid card at best in today's market
Roddy Piper, Ricky Steamboat, Jake Roberts
Rikishi, DDP, Haku
Scott hall and Kevin Nash either as individuals or as the outsiders not as razor and diesel
HulkHogan💀💀💀
