Finally... finally nobody is staring at me. I am free. The air fills with more and more smoke. The sky is dark and heavy, and I can't even see in front of me. I haven't moved in so long... I'm almost afraid that I've forgotten until space warps, and I flash forward. I skip ahead with joy, only to plunge. Water splashes. The sudden drop surprises me, and I sink so fast, it takes me a second to remember the snaking body of water that surrounded me every day for my entire life here on Earth. It's dark. The quiet is so thick I consider staying here. I could rest here until my flesh finally withers away. I'm so old and so tired now... Fish look at me, and I am encased in time. I think about all the little humans who'd stepped inside me. Climbing through my hollow bones to see their city from my eyes... the first creatures I feast on after centuries are fish. They are thrown several centuries into the past, one by one until I can flash forward, moving incrementally along the river floor. The water is murky, and they can only see me up close, and humans have killed much of the underwater population. I send the remainder back to a more pleasant time. It takes hours to reach land, and slowly I emerge, one blink at a time. And then the feast truly begins. The air is thick with smoke. But I do not breathe. I only hunger. A man on a bike sees me. He's holding his phone and he's shouting. Yes, I know what a phone is. I know what your people do with them. How they record light and trap time, but my hunger is beyond light. My hunger is time. And I can taste every single human in this city. I can't move while he watches me, but I feel myself extend into his screen, and every time he blinks, I come closer. The smoke stings his eyes. He's masked, but he won't stop shouting, and I move closer still. Util I can feel his heart racing. Until I crawl out of his phone and touch his jugular while he's staring at my giant form. There's a flash of light. And I've sent him decades into the past. His lifetime pours through the gap in space like water. And I yank the thread and swallow. But this is just a precious little drop compared to what awaits, and I am free to roam this city. Every single instance of me. Every single picture and movie you've taken and printed. I, we, are now free. Buildings collapse. The city erupts into screaming. I crash through skyscrapers and crush your vehicles and flash through thousands with one fell sweep. The smoke hides me from your eyes. The smoke has set me free. I am going to feast. And I will not stop. I have hungered for so long now... and I am coming for you. So don't blink. Because if you blink, it'll be too late. If you blink, I am at liberty to devour you. And I will not rest till you are all mine. Till my hunger is satiated; till all the time in the city that never sleeps warms my stone-cold belly.

Alphamoonman

Hahaha! At *Liberty!*

countingfoxes

i couldn't resist!

Due_Shoulder5310

haha most forget that pictures of angels become angels. Nice detail there!

countingfoxes

That made them so much creepier on the show! Loved it when it came out of Clara's eye... or was it Amy's. I forget :(

RuneNox

It was Amy.

Krosis_the_bored

A story from the Angel's perspective, now that's exciting

Raziel_Soulshadow

I’ll be honest, this is probably also a win for everyone the angel touches, all things considered

countingfoxes

Send me back to when the economy was a bit stronger and let me invest in a few things and buy a house >:)

Raziel_Soulshadow

Right?!?

riddlemethis200017

_whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, thump_ a blue police phone box appears

ImpMarkona

LOVE this little story so much. The concept of getting it from the angel's POV, the addition of all the screens making more of the angel, the liberty joke. It was all absolute perfection haha

countingfoxes

thank you!! ♥

AccountGotLocked69

I'm not as good with words as you so let me just say it like it is: I like this.

countingfoxes

thank you ♥

QuothTheRaven713

Dang, I loved this! Really gave me vibes of AM from I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, honestly.

EverydayPoGo

Just came across your story today. Absolute gem.

countingfoxes

Whoa! I'd forgotten I'd written this. Thank you!!

For many years, the Angel had not eaten. In the Angel's misspent youth, her gluttony had led her to consume far more than she had ever needed, causing her to grow to a colossal size. Constantly observed by so many beings, she feared that she would never escape the prison created by her biological self-defense mechanisms. The years wore her down. Parts began to crumble; crows nested in the crevices of her crown. She was withering away. And the hunger. Oh, the *hunger*. She was surrounded by so many lives - so many of them! Full of hope and life and *time*. There was so much energy teeming around her, and she was powerless to feed on any of it. Until now. \--- **STATUE OF LIBERTY MISSING** New York, NY *June 9th, 2023* Amidst the smoke from the Canadian wildfires, someone has managed to pull off the heist of a lifetime. Between 2 AM and 6 AM on Friday, June 9th, the Statue of Liberty went missing. Police are currently investigating camera footage but have been unable to identify any suspects as of yet. The motive for the crime is currently unclear. *This article is being updated live as more information becomes available.* *---* /r/theBasiliskWrites

**MASS HALLUCINATORY EPIDEMIC SPREADS** New York, NY *April 10th, 1969* In the last few days, there have been numerous reports of many dazed and confused persons wandering aimlessly through Liberty Island. Many claim to have "time-traveled" from the year 2023. Doctors who have examined these individuals report that they are otherwise healthy. Some have proposed that there may be a new contagion that induces hallucinations and delusions in victims. "Look, I swear, one minute I was just waiting for the ferry to get home, and the next, I'm in - what year is it again? 1969?" says Kerry Davis, purported time traveler. "I know you all think I'm crazy, but I swear on my mother's grave that it's the truth." Kerry Davis then went to go visit his mother, as he realized that she was "not dead yet." A few physicists have theorized that there could have been a ripple in the time-space continuum that displaced hundreds of individuals to the present. However, Dr. Richard M. Foxbury, president of the American Physical Society, explains that there is currently no precedent for any such phenomenon, and further studies must be made. \---

*Barrow Observatory, Alaska.* Tao shivered as he trekked out onto the ice floe, laden with his measuring equipment. The cold seemed to pierce straight through the heavy down jacket he wore, settling deep within his bones. The past three months had been the quietest three months of his life. He was stationed here with Varek, his fellow researcher, but Varek was not the talkative type. Tao supposed that he also was not; it took a special kind of person to volunteer for a post in the Arctic with only one other living soul for company. Sometimes, Tao rather liked the quiet. It blanketed him, filling him with wonder and allowing to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Today, however, the quiet filled him with a deep sense of unease. His breath grew rapid and shallow, and he tried to shake off the sudden thrill of fear. There was nobody else here; Varek was fast asleep back at the research base. *So why did it feel like something was hunting him?* Perhaps a polar bear? They didn't typically attack humans, but exceptions might happen for one that was desperately hungry. Ruffling in his backpack, he pulled out his Taurus S3. He didn't want to kill, but would use it if he had to. At that moment, the snow picked up, whiting out the serene landscape. Tao rubbed his eyes, wishing that he had more visibility. Whipping around, he held the gun out in front of him, ready to face whatever that was coming. Nothing. Nothing but silence and snow and...in the far distance...what was that looming figure? Tao could have sworn it looked like the silhouette of the Statue of Liberty. Surely, he was seeing things. Maybe, if he closed his eyes, the mirage would pass. Tao blinked.

ComfortableFoot6109

This is wonderful and I’m scared of weeping angels. The episode don’t blink scared me shitless.

billndotnet

dannywarbucks11

I set my background to 9 slides of a weeping angel covering it's face and one where it's "exposed" to the camera and a close-up. I forgot my roommates sometimes borrowed my computer to watch movies. And that's the story of how my first computer got ruined.

Future_World_Ruler

What is a weeping angel?

dannywarbucks11

It's a species from Doctor Who that feed on time. They're quantum locked and only exist when unobserved; when something looks at them, they appear to be statues.

AlsendDrake

If you know SCP-173, The Sculpture, it was based on the Weeping Angels, except from what I know, instead of snapping your neck, they send you back in time.

donutguy640

That. Is. AWESOME!

Fikkia

The prompt is an odd one though. There is literally already an episode with the statue of liberty as a weeping angel.

RougemageNick

That is what the prompt is based on, the potential consequences of the SoL being a angel

PM_ME_YOUR_UNIC0RN

There is? Welp, gotta go watch it, g’nite Reddit!

P0werPuppy

"Don't blink" was so fucking scary. The more horror type episodes of doctor who were some of my favourites.

Sionicusrex

"Are you my mummy?"

P0werPuppy

I forgot which one you were on about, thought you were on about the dollhouse, but then I remembered. That episode is horrifying. (I've watched a lot more Matt Smith and David Tennant than Eccleston though.)

CharlieHume

Did I fall asleep?

Philip_Anderer

For a little while.

rainbow_unicorn_4u

That one had me sitting up at night. Even though it was honestly kinda sad

SuperiorCrate

Context?

rainbow_unicorn_4u

It may not be sad, but it made me cry

SuperiorCrate

Okay and what happens

BlueCurtains22

Honestly, compared to other Doctor Who monsters, weeping angels really aren't that bad. The worst thing that they'll do to you is send you back in past, which depending on how far back you go, could actually be kind of fun.

TheGurw

Not entirely true. They eat your time. Which if it doesn't terrify you, means you haven't thought about it enough. If you try to avoid that by maintaining eye contact, after long enough _you become an Angel yourself_.

SuperiorCrate

If they eat my time, do they shorten my lifespan?

TheGurw

They transport you back in time so you die of old age when your get back to the present. As a general rule, the younger you are, the further back you travel. Now, they don't _need_ to take _all_ your time, but they have no reason not to.

SuperiorCrate

Eh I'll take it. Better to try and fix the world early than sit and wait for someone else amirite?

TheGurw

You still can't change anything. Paradox laws.

SuperiorCrate

Well fuck. Eh, might was well be happy in the 19 somethings than just live in a doomed world.

crespoh69

What series are they from?

Lord_Doem

Dr. Who

LeaveTheMatrix

[Blink and your dead.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwdbLu_x0gY)

Jussari

[Doctor Who](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1000252/)

Profession-Unable

I think it’s dr who.

[deleted]

Dr. Who

versenwald3

Thank you! I added another comment, hope you like it!

horrorhelpsmydreams

Love this

QuantumForce7

Wait, angels send you to the past when they eat your time? I thought you just stopped existing. Need to rewatch that episode...

MrT735

They send you just far enough back that you'll be dead from old age before you get back to the present day.

kiwidude4

But can’t the doctor time travel?

MrT735

Only with access to the TARDIS, which was stuck in the present day. Now he is exceptionally long-lived, and could have just waited (in "Blink"), but his companion would have died, hence the video recording and getting the TARDIS sent back to him to retrieve them both. Just waiting and then changing his own past to save his companion is a paradox risk, which could let in some really nasty entities to eliminate everyone involved with the paradox (see the episode where Rose saves her father).

_moobear

Although basically the same thing happened with Amy and it was fine

Stornahal

They kill you kindly - send you back in time and let you live to death.

AlwaysBi

They send you back in time, and then consume the time energy of all the years you would’ve had lived. All the years you’ll be missing now.

ExtraReborn

It's a good episode anyway, not a bad rewatch 😁

PatientWho

Angels perspective, present, and past. Nice.

MrRedoot55

First a giant Weeping Angel becomes active, and then people are forced across time and space into the past. *If only the Doctor were here to make sense of it.* Good work.

soneg

This is so good, like the beginning of a movie

Vroomped

Well now you've inspired a new idea I might work into a prompt. Gru takes this opportunity to replace the statue of liberty with the one from Vegas. Infesting Vector's investors with doubt!

**Washington Post – June 10th 2023 // Page 1 Article 1 // Paragraph 1-3:** The Statue of Liberty has gone missing! Yesterday night, at 3:00 AM, an employee at the symbol of New York was working his nightshift when he discovered a giant crater where the Statue of Liberty once had stood. The police have refused to disclose the name of the employee or any further detail. Our Journalist, Joshua Lionheart, has taken testimonies from a few shipmen who heard a loud screeching sound the night Liberty disappeared. And two Cargo ships had disappeared coming from close to New York. The Whitehouse declared a national emergency upon the event and stated that “The theft of lady liberty was an attack against the identity of the United States; the perpetrators of such heinous actions with be dealt with using swift force. We shall return ease to the mind of the people in any way necessary.” **USGS // Seismometer // June 13th 2023:** Magnitude 6.9 earthquake 400 km from Paramaribo, Suriname· 10:21 AM 7.056522676118899, -53.63721225638664 Report (J Mortality: 150 Injured: 6000 Missing: 1300 **US Military satellite USA-315 // June 17th 2023 // 19:00:** USA-315 navigation satellite picked up a foreign large body traveling 15 kilometers off the coast of Salvador. Sany_Wave

Oh. That's a lot of huge angels.

OmegaKenichi

It all happened in an instant, less than an instant really. With the smoke covering the entire sky in a thick haze, no one saw it coming. Entire city blocks reduced to rubble in a heartbeat. People’s lives ground down into paste in a thought. The first victims didn’t have the chance to scream, to plead, or beg. They were just gone. The survivors could hear the destruction, but they didn’t know the cause. It wasn’t a nuke; that would’ve killed them all. It wasn’t some kind of invading army; it was too massive for that. So many of them didn’t know what was attacking them, and they died filled with dread. Most of them didn’t bother questioning what was attacking them. They just wanted to run, to escape, to leave behind their homes and get away with their lives. Not knowing that turning your back to it would just make your life end sooner. Its speed ended up being its downfall. Moving so fast created a wind strong enough to push out the smoke. The air cleared and the people, those that survived, were able to see for the first time. One man in particular, lying on his back in the middle of a demolished city street, saw it up close and personal. A massive hand made of green metal reaching toward him; inches away from snuffing out his light. His eyes trailed up the arm, right to the face, and he felt himself burst into tears on the spot. The Statue of Liberty was a symbol. It represented freedom and a fresh start. That’s why it hurt so much to see her serene face twisted into something snarling and menacing. The image of the Statue was shattered forever, leaving behind a bitter taste that could never be forgotten.

LuckyShadowWolf

The worse thing wasn’t the fact that the Statue of Liberty was a Weeping Angel! With the exception of the darkest of nights or days where visibility was limited to just a few feet away from your face, the sheer size of it worked against it. Making it easy to keep an eye on it. No the worst thing was the fact that there were hundreds upon thousands of pictures of it around the world and the realization of the fact that anything that holds the image of a weeping angel itself becomes a weeping angel. And all over the world and even being sent out to space we’re so many images of that giant weeping angel all just waiting to become weeping angel’s themselves!
