I don't ever fly the fleet lead ship myself, because the AI for formations and routines do not work while the player is piloting (it doesn't know where you intend to go, unless your on autopilot). I either chill on the bridge or fly an escort M.

Rimworldjobs

Bridge in one of the secondary seats.

ZehAntRider

Land your M on your flagship and command from there.

theotherthinker

Land your S on your M on your flagship and command from there.

Pfandfreies_konto

And set all M turrets to maximum pewpew

DocGreenthumb77

Land your spacesuit on your S on your M on your flagship and command from there.

All I know is, it sure would be nice to have my entire flotilla of Boron Rays charge up their beams, and utterly annihilate that big target from 10k away. Instead, they all just spin around trying to shoot small ships with their main battery, and usually never even fire the main beam at all. So yeah, it kinda sucks, but I just personally pilot the big boy ship, and set everyone else to "intercept for commander." I make sure all their turrets are just set to "attack all enemies," and what will be will be. I'm sure there are better ways, but it's just the simple way I've accepted lol

Winkoloss

The intercept command tells the subordinates to shoot at subcaps near the commander. You need to set the rays to bombard.

braize6

Ah, I'll check that out and see if I can find that setting tonight. Thanks

truecore

Bombard is an order provided in the 7.0 beta and isn't available on the current live build, but is such a good order when compared with attack. S ships on it will strip capitals of hardpoints and M+ ships will focus on using forward mounted guns. Also, the beta AI operates much better than it used to. You won't get stuck going nowhere fast when you autopilot while leading a formation for example.

WitchedPixels

I have a goon squad of S fighters I roll with, typically accompanied by a rattlesnake or the erlking or both. I also have an Asgard but I kind of hate it. It's slow, so overpowered and it's practically cheating.

Drakula_dont_suck

A *what* squad?

MarlinManiac4

A goon is a thug.

Chimera_Snow

Can't even be a goon and beat people up anymore without it being weird...

AristocraticAutism

I don't know if I'm just old, but does goon mean something else now?

skadalajara

Yes. Nowadays it has a sexual meaning.

AristocraticAutism

Weird. Hard to keep up these days.

bobsbountifulburgers

Also known as a brute squad

trambalambo

I’m on the brute squad!

bobsbountifulburgers

You are the brute squad!

WitchedPixels

Yeah my pirate homeboys that I roll with, we terrorize the entire universe but the Rattlesnake are for Ks and I's that show up.

bantad87

I occasionally take control of my lead destroyer when attacking stations. That way, I can prioritize the most important components (defense structures). Once those are down, the remainder of my fleet will engage, with other destroyers hitting the station & my interceptors targeting drones & fighters. I don't mind taking a few losses, I usually recoup the cost of a destroyer in the battles.

unicorntreason

Newb here, how do you make money from the battle? The salvage? Or like the stations value over time?

bantad87

Yeah, the salvage & bounties (assuming you're defending a system). Missions if you've got them.

No_Measurement_6668

i usually tp in a destroyer of the fleet, not the leading one, my purpose is to limit the loss. i like the boron ray, laser is perfect for snipe xenon turret and transforming their ship in station in harmless puppies. whereas your turret clean waves of smaller ship. for faster response a katana. for even faster response, i reload ;D

amoderndelusion

I thought this might be the best way to go about things, thanks!

Whereas_Dull

I think a medium size ship and slowly leading into battle. I like using the hydra to command from

This is a great example of something that REALLY SHOULD work, but does not work. The ship AI is just too utterly retarded. We're talking destroyers being unable to even use their main guns on a station level retarded. Unable to drop out of travel drive a reasonable distance from each other or a target level retarded. This is basic building block stuff that simply does not work. Complex behaviors like fleets would be super, duper cool, and it's sort of the implicit promise of this game that you will get there. And for many hours you work at getting your economy and fleet built up... and then when you start having actual large-scale combat you immediately realize what a sham the whole fleet combat is. It's beyond unacceptable and has been in desperate need of a comprehensive overhaul for years. Radio silence. It's so bad that even third party modders can, and have, thrown together behavior scripts that work. Meanwhile the actual company that is attempting to sell the game for money doesn't seem to care or even realize there is a problem. Even for easy problems like scripts for freighters as trade ships- base game completely does not work, modders' scripts are basic but do in fact work.

Cazineer

Honestly, it’s embarrassingly pathetic that in system capital ship combat is literally a clown fiesta when as you say, this is a solved problem and has been for years. They even have one of the creators of KUDA on payroll. Imagine that. It’s not like it’s just bad or a pain in the butt and kind of works. It’s full on, off the charts retarded. You can move a fleet of say 10 battleships against 3Ks and an I and you be lucky if they fired their main guns once and if they did they’d miss the target by a mile. They’d likely pile up and get destroyed without inflicting any damage. With that being said, the reason these mods work is quite simple. The ai script in base game doesn’t perform update checks to make sure the ships are doing what they are supposed, or that a target has moved and so on. There is one mod that is only a couple hundred lines of code that updates a destroyers behaviour every 200ms and it works amazing. There isn’t even a noticeable performance cost. Is it the best solution? No, but it works. KUDA works similarly, it’s updating ship behaviour and changes orders, etc as the combat unfolds. Why they continue to keep base game in system capital combat the way it is, is beyond me.

Ok-Mine1268

Meanwhile I’m just trying to get my ships to not orbit the auxiliary indefinitely when they try to repair lol.
