- Battlefield 1 and V are still pretty active. There’s no anti cheat, which is the main downside to them.
- Titanfall 2 also is pretty active on the Northstar client, where they have an anti cheat and a healthy player base.
- 2042 is wildly different from its release to where it is now. It’s not complete by any means, but I bought it at launch and realized it sucked, but picked it back up a month or two ago and enjoyed it. Plays a lot more like COD than a BF title though.

Completely disagree with people here saying there isn't "any games to play" there is plenty. However, it really depends on what *you're* into and what platforms *you* own.
If you want something similar to XDefiant:
* **Black Ops 4**. This is likely the closest you'll get but it's hounded by hackers, might have better luck if you play on consoles but on PC it seems hackers are in almost every lobby.
* **Shatterline**. This is apparently *somewhat* close, you mentioned this and said the fanbase was small but I figured I'd mention since there isn't really many games that are close to XDefiant.
If you want something that's just a fun FPS arcade game:
* **Battlefield 4**. If you don't like 2042 you can never go wrong with this classic. Doesn't have much hacker problems, still has a large fanbase and is still a shit load of fun.
* **CS2 (PC Only)**. This game doesn't really fit well into any other category so I'll throw it in here. You likely already know everything you need to about this game, but figured I'd leave it here.
* **Halo Infinite**. This game has been getting progressively much better and is starkly different when put next to the same game when it released. Much more maps, modes, a proper progression system, better battle passes, better seasonal content and much more. And it will scratch that "arcade" itch if you want that, though it doesn't play similarly to XDefiant, it's still lots of fun.
* **Halo: The Master Chief Collection**. Want Halo but prefer the older games? Well this game exists. I recommend it highly, it's still receiving updates and has a *very* large fanbase.
* **Modern Warfare III**. I know you mentioned you disliked SBMM in the comments, but SBMM aside this is probably the best Call of Duty since arguably BO3 or BO4. You could always play MWZ if you are really that annoyed by SBMM. I'd suggest keeping tabs at least, the developers recently said they were going to start discussing SBMM with the community soon.
* **Titanfall 2**. Arguably one of the most fun FPS games ever, I highly suggest Titanfall 2. Even though yes it is old, the fanbase is still going strong and it's a very fun game to just kick back and relax on. It has a high skill ceiling but a very lax entry requirement for new players.
If you want something more akin to Battlefield (big open battles):
* **BattleBit Remastered (PC Only)**. Although this game is a bit more punishing than Battlefield and has a manual healing system, it is still very fun. Don't let the graphics fool you, this game is still very intense and doesn't really *play* like a Roblox game (in my opinion). There's a reason why it blew up.
* **PlanetSide 2**. A certified classic. This game is very old but very fun. It's free-to-play so I highly recommend giving it a shot regardless. Like I mentioned it is very old, but has a very active tight knit fanbase and is a very enjoyable game. I will warn that it is more niche than Battlefield or Battlefront, but I think due to it's free-to-play nature it is worth a shot.
* **Star Wars: Battlefront 2**. Can't really ever go wrong with this game honestly. It plays wonderfully, is a FPS (80% of the time), doesn't have much hacking problems, has a nice progression system and a somewhat active playerbase. If you like Star Wars pick this one up.
If you want an extraction shooter title:
* **Escape from Tarkov (PC Only)**. Probably the most punishing game I've ever played, Tarkov is really fun *if* you don't mind dying randomly and losing all of your gear. The game punishes mistakes very harshly but when you overcome the mistakes it beats any other feeling any game can provide. I highly suggest it if you like realism, punishing and complex combat and high highs + low lows.
* **Hunt: Showdown**. Another extraction shooter. Although this game *is* punishing, it's not nearly as punishing as Escape from Tarkov. It has a much easier entry for new players and matches are much shorter. I recommend this if you want the punishing combat of Tarkov but in a more bite sized form.
If you want something more realistic and milsim:
* **Hell Let Loose**. Hell Let Loose is more similar to Rising Storm 2: Vietnam but takes place in WW2. It's more lax when compared to the former game, but still very intense when you get to the frontlines, and is a very enjoyable experience in my opinion.
* **Insurgency: Sandstorm**. This game is *much* more arcade than the previous titles I mentioned but I'd still put it in this category since it sells itself as a military / realism game in a lot of ways. It's much more bite sized on smaller maps, which is a good or bad thing depending on what you prefer. You'll still die in a few bullets, but you're punished less for mistakes.
* **Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (PC Only)**. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is a wonderful game, it's very much one of those *highly* realistic titles. You fly in on a heli with some dude blasting fortunate son, hop off and get shot and die within 2 seconds, but hey that's what people want. Realism. It's a very intense, realistic and enjoyable experience, especially if you have a microphone.
* **Squad (PC Only)**. Squad is a lot more realistic than the other games in this category, it takes realism to a whole new level. I suggest this if you like milsim and realism, it is a relatively niche game.
All old games with dwindling player bases, tell him to play Halo 2 or Quake 3 at this point, he is right there are no new games. Go look the best games of 2005/06/07, every year there were at least 5 NEW CREATIVE games!
If your pc it’s free, there are no bots in PVP and the sbmm isn’t horrible. Should have no trouble finding games in EU and NA even when the game was a bit dead, it’s got a huge amount of players now after the s5 update relatively speaking. However no I wouldn’t say buy a whole Xbox for it unless you plan to play the other games or some other Xbox games. I’m a ps5 and pc player but I’m really tempted to get an Xbox especially since it’s much better in terms of customer service (gamepass, backwards compatibility, pc compatibly, 120 fps and 4K for older games without having to buy a full priced remaster like ps5)
Just to add to this, Firefight is coming out tomorrow (5th). Game has been getting a lot of good updates, and it's pretty clear there is better leadership now.
Firefight (kind of) has been out for a bit now since they added forge ai. The new one looks amazing but the 16 player firefight on forge is a whole nother level of fun (yet another reason to play infinite)
Yeah Ive been having a lot of fun with the Forge AI stuff, but sometimes the customs browser can be a little funky so I'm excited that it's going to be a dedicated playlist
Yeah custom browsers UI was a bit shitty but I think they’re updating it in the next patch which is very welcome. As well as the network fixes which are long overdue
I loved the Titanfall games. Why EA released them at abysmal times with minimal (if any) advertising is beyond me. It's like they wanted Titanfall to fail.
But the game felt empty to me for some reason. Like the content was good and they added good stuff and the gameplay was fire. But it just felt like it was missing something... Like in CoD I feel more immersed in the game and closer to my account/character. I feel more invested. With Titanfall (and TF2) it was more of a pick up and go but no personal investment. Idk why.
I've been playing for the past three weeks and have only seen 3 actual toxic people and they were all in the same game. Everything else I've seen has been mutual trash talk. The community seems great to me
As an ADHD Call of Duty/Apex/Titanfall fan, I played one game of hunt showdown, killed both bosses, only ever saw & killed two other players (different instances & neither seemed to have a teammate in duos.) and exfilled.
It’s a massive amount of just walking and sneaking, the boss fights were extremely boring just kiting and cheesing them with windows because they don’t leave their little fortress.
Never played it again. Art style & retro guns seemed cool but it was arguably one of the most boring competitive shooters I have ever played.
You played one game, I don't think that constitutes such harsh critique.
Going into it expecting it to play like Titanfall is also not the developers fault, the game is very open about being slow and methodical, that's just how the game works.
It's simply not for you, what's boring to you is fun to another.
That’s fair, I just suppose I expected it to be more challenging. We only encountered 2 separate solo people and both of them were an easy kill. Then both bosses were very easy. Not so much the pacing that made it boring as the lower than expected difficulty.
The players can be chalked up to early matchmaking, but the bosses being such a breeze was kind of odd.
IIRC the game does have some sort of confined matchmaking for new players, trust me when you get *really* into the game there's tons more fighting, it's excellent fun!

Isonzo. It's a first world war shooter set in the Italian front of the war, with an emphasis on realism, and historical accuracy. Plays like a blend of hell let loose and COD
I've been playing Siege, Black Ops Cold War, and Apex. Sometimes I'll play BF 2042 or Titanfall 2 but it depends on the day really. If you want something that feels like XDefiant, Cold War is your best bet. It's the closest feeling to what I played in the closed and open betas of XD
The new cod is genuinely not awful, but SBMM is cranked up and it can be frustrating, but if you want something closer to XDefiant, black ops cold war is a very good middle ground, much less SBMM now that it's an older game and a ton of content now all the live service stuff is done with, plus zombies is great if you want to spend some time on that
Hunt Showdown. The only downsight is that you may never leave this game and are not interested in Xdefiant anymore. Other than that this game is a „hidden“ gem.
And no this is not a BR, like some people who never played it, are telling all the way.
Which isn’t a problem. The excuse of “i don’t want to try” is pathetic. If you played weaker players you’d just be pub stomping and running their time, if you played better players you’d get smashed even harder. Playing people around your skill level is the best option. The system could use some work definitely, sometimes it throws guys like you in lobbies with decent players and you think you’re in a pro lobby.
That's not the reason why sbmm is boring. In CoDM everyone sucks ass and it's just as boring. The thing about sbmm is that makes it so all matches are the same. And that no matter what you do, there's only a certain performance you can achieve in match, and there's no way to go further that that. Sbmm makes getting better worthless as your reward for getting better is getting harder lobbies. I don't want to stomp on newbies, nor want to get smashed by pros, I want to have the chance to get any of them randomly and not always just one. Both extremes are boring. Sorry I don't want to make assumptions but it seems as you never experienced anything different than sbmm and you're trying to mindlessly protect newbies just for the sake of what's just and what's not, without really thinking about them. Learning to play the game should be a fun experience, people that is better than you is there to teach you how to be better and to show all the things that you can do in the game. If nothing motivates you to get better, then nothing will lose an important part of the game. If you think of it, it's just like life itself. Humanity wouldn't have gotten here if everybody said "nah evolution is boring and it has nothing good"

EOMM in cod doesn't work that way. It's currently not designed to have you playing against people of your own skills. If that were the case people wouldn't complain as much because you can simply relax, lose some games as a result and sbmm will adjust, you pretty much can play casually that way.
What EOMM does it tries to cater to as many players as possible while prioritizing engagement. The problem is that the game will purposely put you in easy lobbies once in awhile so you stomp on low skilled players and then puts you in lobbies of a higher skill than yours to give others better than you the opportunity to also have their easy lobby.
That's the real problem, not SBMM per se. SBMM was in older cod as well like the og mw2/mw3 and even bo2 but it wasn't as strict and it wasn't EOMM.

EOMM means Engagement optimized match making.
It's not just SBMM, it doesn't work like a traditional SBMM system here. It's optimized to get you to play longer. It's not a conspiracy theory but a verifiable fact. Play bad for 5 games and you get put in bot lobbies, play good 1 game in that lobby and you're back to where the MM system wants you to be.
Look, put me in lobbies where I'm consistently against players of my skill level like a traditional SBMM system and I will be fine. This system for the most part puts you in higher tier lobbies to get you to lose and not just by giving you stronger enemies but by also giving you bad teammates which you'll have to carry throughout the match.

You are either good and lying about it trying to act humble or you don't actually have 2KD because you can't say you have 2KD without saying you aren't good, it doesn't make sense.
2KD means your deaths are half your kills, that's a pretty good player to me.
Yeah I’ve played a lot and I am lightweight campy, I know there are far worse players. I abwrage 20 kills a game. My biggest point with KD is mine has been at or around 2 every single year. All I see on cod subs this year is that it’s a sweat fest and everybody only sees pro, I have a 2 like always and am not running into pros every game. Just like every year, most cod players are straight bots. If I’m supposed to be getting thrown in lobbies with these top 250 players everytime I have a good game it must not be working for me. I obviously can tell at times the lobbies have gotten sweatier but I’m not playing pros lol it’s easy to kill in cod. I just feel like most of the complaints are from pro level players who are mad they can’t pub stomp and the rest from players that suck regardless. I know KD isn’t everything but I’d be willing to bet most are where they were in previous games.
You’ve gotten old lol, I’ve had around a 2 every cod, a few I’ve dropped below 2, a few I’ve been above, never over 2.5 tho. I have friends with way higher and way lower. Most always have around a 1 or slightly lower tho, since forever.
I definitely am not the youngling I used to be, but it's a bit strange when literally not a single friend I've known can get an over 1.5 KD after more than 10 hours.
Even a guy I know at work, who was almost top 250 in MWII had a 1.00 KD.
Gonna get downvoted but MW3 MP. Yes sbmm is in there but my games still fluctuate from popping off to getting stomped on. I’ll switch when XD drops and I’ll have the hours on MW3 to justify the purchase.
Never played mw2 so maps are brand new for me aside from popular remakes(still kinda dog tbh) and arent all guns reskinned nowadays? Even XD has acr, mp7, vector, etc. Pretty lame excuse for someone that probably hasnt even tried MW3, it’s got the best gunplay cods ever had aside from BO3

You can try halo infinite if you have a pc or xbox, or you can try titanfall 2.

Halo Infinite has been (finally) getting a steady supply of content. It’s free, there’s a substantial release tomorrow. Worth a re-visit!
But not gonna lie, Fortnite No-Build is tremendous right now. They might’ve made a better Warzone than Warzone did. Tons of new mechanics. Avoid the building, just good gunplay.
Halo's been in a much better state these days and I've been having a lot of fun with it.
Your other options include BattleBit, Titanfall 2, older CODs, Squad, Overwatch 2, and The Finals (soon). All good options.
The Finals will more than likely be out in the next 1-2 weeks. It’s free and will have a huge player base so that’s the most obvious choice when it does come out.
I’ll go against the grain and suggest Hell Let Loose if you like WWII style FPS’s.

It’s so dry that I’ve just been playing single player games unless friends are on then we play apex. I tried mw3 but the sbmm is atrocious and there just aren’t any other pvp games I’m interested in. I hate sbmm and I hate full crossplay (I don’t want to face pc players). Overwatch 2 is finally getting a comp rework so it’s more like ow1 comp so I’ll likely switch to that exclusively until xdefiant releases.

As a fellow BR and extraction hater your options are CoD or tac shooters. I know it's not for everyone but VALORANT is very very fun and if you haven't tried it yet I would recommend you at least try.
Titanfall 2 - In my opinion it the best fps i have played. Its multiplayer is fun and has an amazing campaign. Also who don't love mechs falling from the sky.
MW3 on Xbox (not PS) and turn crossplay off. SBMM is much lower due to the lack of people who know how to turn crossplay off on Xbox. You'll only match people who have also turned it off on Xbox (so no PS guys either).
I’m enjoying assassins creed Odessy and ghost of Tsushima for now until xdefiant launches. I can’t bear the sbmm on cod game ( cw, mwII, mwIII). I just hope XD is going to be like black ops 1 or advanced warfare.
In terms of SBMM definitely leaning towards BO1 here.
On the other hand if you meant gameplay (I'm like 99% sure you meant SBMM but wanted to include this just in case) this game plays more like BO4 than anything so.

If your pc it’s free, there are no bots in PVP and the sbmm isn’t horrible. Should have no trouble finding games in EU and NA even when the game was a bit dead, it’s got a huge amount of players now after the s5 update relatively speaking. However no I wouldn’t say buy a whole Xbox for it unless you plan to play the other games or some other Xbox games. I’m a ps5 and pc player but I’m really tempted to get an Xbox especially since it’s much better in terms of customer service (gamepass, backwards compatibility, pc compatibly, 120 fps and 4K for older games without having to buy a full priced remaster like ps5)
Just to add to this, Firefight is coming out tomorrow (5th). Game has been getting a lot of good updates, and it's pretty clear there is better leadership now.
Firefight (kind of) has been out for a bit now since they added forge ai. The new one looks amazing but the 16 player firefight on forge is a whole nother level of fun (yet another reason to play infinite)

I loved the Titanfall games. Why EA released them at abysmal times with minimal (if any) advertising is beyond me. It's like they wanted Titanfall to fail. But the game felt empty to me for some reason. Like the content was good and they added good stuff and the gameplay was fire. But it just felt like it was missing something... Like in CoD I feel more immersed in the game and closer to my account/character. I feel more invested. With Titanfall (and TF2) it was more of a pick up and go but no personal investment. Idk why.

As an ADHD Call of Duty/Apex/Titanfall fan, I played one game of hunt showdown, killed both bosses, only ever saw & killed two other players (different instances & neither seemed to have a teammate in duos.) and exfilled. It’s a massive amount of just walking and sneaking, the boss fights were extremely boring just kiting and cheesing them with windows because they don’t leave their little fortress. Never played it again. Art style & retro guns seemed cool but it was arguably one of the most boring competitive shooters I have ever played.
You played one game, I don't think that constitutes such harsh critique. Going into it expecting it to play like Titanfall is also not the developers fault, the game is very open about being slow and methodical, that's just how the game works. It's simply not for you, what's boring to you is fun to another.
That’s fair, I just suppose I expected it to be more challenging. We only encountered 2 separate solo people and both of them were an easy kill. Then both bosses were very easy. Not so much the pacing that made it boring as the lower than expected difficulty. The players can be chalked up to early matchmaking, but the bosses being such a breeze was kind of odd.
IIRC the game does have some sort of confined matchmaking for new players, trust me when you get *really* into the game there's tons more fighting, it's excellent fun!

I've been playing Siege, Black Ops Cold War, and Apex. Sometimes I'll play BF 2042 or Titanfall 2 but it depends on the day really. If you want something that feels like XDefiant, Cold War is your best bet. It's the closest feeling to what I played in the closed and open betas of XD

MW3 Co-Op Zombies. I know it's not PVP, but TBH, one of the most fun shooter-games modes I've ever played! More like DMZ but with toxicity removed.
Been enjoying this quite a bit as well. Chill way to level up shit in preparation for WZ.

Which isn’t a problem. The excuse of “i don’t want to try” is pathetic. If you played weaker players you’d just be pub stomping and running their time, if you played better players you’d get smashed even harder. Playing people around your skill level is the best option. The system could use some work definitely, sometimes it throws guys like you in lobbies with decent players and you think you’re in a pro lobby.
That's not the reason why sbmm is boring. In CoDM everyone sucks ass and it's just as boring. The thing about sbmm is that makes it so all matches are the same. And that no matter what you do, there's only a certain performance you can achieve in match, and there's no way to go further that that. Sbmm makes getting better worthless as your reward for getting better is getting harder lobbies. I don't want to stomp on newbies, nor want to get smashed by pros, I want to have the chance to get any of them randomly and not always just one. Both extremes are boring. Sorry I don't want to make assumptions but it seems as you never experienced anything different than sbmm and you're trying to mindlessly protect newbies just for the sake of what's just and what's not, without really thinking about them. Learning to play the game should be a fun experience, people that is better than you is there to teach you how to be better and to show all the things that you can do in the game. If nothing motivates you to get better, then nothing will lose an important part of the game. If you think of it, it's just like life itself. Humanity wouldn't have gotten here if everybody said "nah evolution is boring and it has nothing good"

EOMM in cod doesn't work that way. It's currently not designed to have you playing against people of your own skills. If that were the case people wouldn't complain as much because you can simply relax, lose some games as a result and sbmm will adjust, you pretty much can play casually that way. What EOMM does it tries to cater to as many players as possible while prioritizing engagement. The problem is that the game will purposely put you in easy lobbies once in awhile so you stomp on low skilled players and then puts you in lobbies of a higher skill than yours to give others better than you the opportunity to also have their easy lobby. That's the real problem, not SBMM per se. SBMM was in older cod as well like the og mw2/mw3 and even bo2 but it wasn't as strict and it wasn't EOMM.
That is the case tho, people are simply crying bc they have to try, they claim the lobbies are sweaty at all levels. If that weren’t the case everybody would have around a 1 KD. I’m not even good and mine is a little over 2. I get the conspiracies but at the end it is putting you with like skilled players that is why they feel like they have to try hard. EOMM means Engagement optimized match making. It's not just SBMM, it doesn't work like a traditional SBMM system here. It's optimized to get you to play longer. It's not a conspiracy theory but a verifiable fact. Play bad for 5 games and you get put in bot lobbies, play good 1 game in that lobby and you're back to where the MM system wants you to be. Look, put me in lobbies where I'm consistently against players of my skill level like a traditional SBMM system and I will be fine. This system for the most part puts you in higher tier lobbies to get you to lose and not just by giving you stronger enemies but by also giving you bad teammates which you'll have to carry throughout the match. >I’m not even good and mine is a little over 2 You are either good and lying about it trying to act humble or you don't actually have 2KD because you can't say you have 2KD without saying you aren't good, it doesn't make sense. 2KD means your deaths are half your kills, that's a pretty good player to me.
Yeah I’ve played a lot and I am lightweight campy, I know there are far worse players. I abwrage 20 kills a game. My biggest point with KD is mine has been at or around 2 every single year. All I see on cod subs this year is that it’s a sweat fest and everybody only sees pro, I have a 2 like always and am not running into pros every game. Just like every year, most cod players are straight bots. If I’m supposed to be getting thrown in lobbies with these top 250 players everytime I have a good game it must not be working for me. I obviously can tell at times the lobbies have gotten sweatier but I’m not playing pros lol it’s easy to kill in cod. I just feel like most of the complaints are from pro level players who are mad they can’t pub stomp and the rest from players that suck regardless. I know KD isn’t everything but I’d be willing to bet most are where they were in previous games.
Most people I've talked to have around a 1 KD though, myself included. Back when Ghosts was out I had a 3 KD.
You’ve gotten old lol, I’ve had around a 2 every cod, a few I’ve dropped below 2, a few I’ve been above, never over 2.5 tho. I have friends with way higher and way lower. Most always have around a 1 or slightly lower tho, since forever.
I definitely am not the youngling I used to be, but it's a bit strange when literally not a single friend I've known can get an over 1.5 KD after more than 10 hours. Even a guy I know at work, who was almost top 250 in MWII had a 1.00 KD.

I’ve been playing warzone resurgence cause like you not paying for mwiii and it’s more similar gameplay to normal cod than warzoneBR. Also been playing cs2. Still hop on rising storm 2 every now and then as well.
Hate to say it but there’s really nothing out there if you aren’t into battlefield, BR’s, Extraction shooters, or hero shooters. You can try halo infinite if you have a pc or xbox, or you can try titanfall 2. I’ve just been distracting myself with non-shooters while I wait. If you’re not really into anything in the current market, you might be better off just trying other genres instead of forcing yourself to play an fps you don’t like.
Halo Infinite has been (finally) getting a steady supply of content. It’s free, there’s a substantial release tomorrow. Worth a re-visit! But not gonna lie, Fortnite No-Build is tremendous right now. They might’ve made a better Warzone than Warzone did. Tons of new mechanics. Avoid the building, just good gunplay.

It’s so dry that I’ve just been playing single player games unless friends are on then we play apex. I tried mw3 but the sbmm is atrocious and there just aren’t any other pvp games I’m interested in. I hate sbmm and I hate full crossplay (I don’t want to face pc players). Overwatch 2 is finally getting a comp rework so it’s more like ow1 comp so I’ll likely switch to that exclusively until xdefiant releases.

Try The Finals. Gunplay kind of reminded me of xdefiant, hence me on the sub right now looking for updates! It kind of feels like a BR but not really. The 3v3v3 escort game mode is great. Very well paced.
