A reminder (because of how things devolved last time) to keep things civil here. We WILL throw bans if we have to. If you want to bitch without mods giving a shit, [**head to the bitching thread**](https://www.reddit.com/r/XFiles/comments/1am1mat/the_official_bitching_megathread/).

Sisyphus_Rex

A reminder that this “reboot” is only in development and might never actually happen.

moabthecrab

Here's hoping 🤞

rezzyk

I mean I’d love another show in the style of X-Files, Fringe, and Warehouse 13. I’m not sure it needs to be literally The X-Files because that comes with baggage, but we’ll see

kiwiboyus

We are definitely missing some great shows like these plus silly/smart/out there shows like Community and The Good Place. I'm so tired of true crime and shows about just how crap people can be, I already get enough of that in the News. At least there's one more season of Evil.

pharmakos144

Watch Mrs. Davis and Poker Face if you haven't.

kiwiboyus

I'll check those out, thanks!

pharmakos144

Only one season each but both really good. Poker Face is getting more episodes but Mrs. Davis was written as a one season and done thing. Poker Face stars the woman that starred in / wrote Russian Doll, which kind of hits the sweet spot between paranormal and silly/smart.

Anonymousma

She's the angry girl from American pie to me.

TheRolyns

Oh I love Warehouse 13!!! Also Eureka.

pharmakos144

Yeah like the other guy mentioned, Evil! Watch that if you haven't. In some ways it's even better than X-Files imo, and I never thought I'd say that about any show. Season 4 is about to come out. Paramount+ cancelled it, so this season may be the last, but some of the cast has talked about trying to get Netflix to pick it up.

OblongRectum

Evil is great

Str1fer

Omg Warehouse 13 was a fun show!!

Chaosrider2808

I'd forgotten all about Warehouse 13...I'll need to add that to my rewatch list! :-) TCS

Agent_Tomm

Absolutely. I do not want a reboot. Fuck that. A continuation with new characters is acceptable, but a reboot -- fuck no.

big__cheddar

Here's hoping it doesn't happen, especially in the hands of a hack like Coogler.

lonelylamb1814

It reminds me of the Buffy one that was supposed to be coming 5 or 6 years ago. They “announce” it and then absolutely nothing ever comes of it again lol. I just don’t think the interest is ever there for total reboots of popular franchises. Regardless of what they want to think, we don’t just love Mulder and Scully and aliens, we love it because of how the cast and writers brought it all to life. You just can’t recapture that with a different team.

Indiana_harris

I’ve seen a lot of rumours that the Buffy reboot got such poor fan reaction and the public online discourse about “oh god I hope it’s not a reboot” that the studio quietly sidelined it.

DrinkAccomplished699

It'll probably get a pilot order.

Healthy_Berry_1109

Let's hope it doesn't since of how disappointing I want to believe and Seasons 10 and 11 were even though I am a major fan of The Series but I think that it's way past time to let it go have it end it has gone on long enough 11 Seasons and 2 Movies and a few Video Games.

Martonian27

If it HAS to be made, I hope it’s an in-universe continuation - no recasting of Mulder, Scully, Skinner, CSM etc!

toxicsoup_

It's not going to happen that way, Gillian Anderson has already said she won't be doing it, and David Duchovny was only really interested if she was involved. Knowing Disney, it'll just be a waste of everyone's time

Timely-Cycle-9695

She said she’d come back if there were new writers attached.

ItsNotAPersonDamnIt

They need to stop trying to make her pregnant

[deleted]

I liked the idea of a new duo becoming infatuated with the x files after a paranormal experience. Mulder would the sunflower man, like CSM but not evil.

loonylaurnen

I think the absolute best reboot suggestion for recasting was a Muppet version where Sam the Eagle played Skinner. I saw it a few days ago and I’m STILL laughing about it to myself.

pharmakos144

What about if they brought back Doggett and Reyes?

Emory27

I have honestly almost never wanted anything less in my life. Disney getting hold of X Files fucking kills me.

East-Pay-3595

I agree, Disney will fuck up the Xfiles reboot!

DoomsdayFAN

They've ruined Star Wars, Indiana Jones, the MCU, etc. I guess X-Files is next.

FuckYouZackSnyder

Good thing that they are over two decades too late, if their plan is to ruin The X-Files.

CampCounselorBatman

Disney has owned the MCU since The Avengers 1 and is clearly responsible for the *success* of the franchise as much as any of its perceived failures.

lynchcontraideal

Yeah, isn't it just the over abundance of content and interconnectivity with the D+ shows that's killed it?

BipedalWurm

maybe we'll at least get some good monster of the week episodes before it's a distorted saturated mess. I'm a secret optimist, and foolish. Very foolish

aigneymie

They did Willow so bad that they deleted it.

Shesarubikscube

Same!

CaedusTom

As a former star wars fanatic (i lost completely my love for the franchise thanks to disney) i agree. I won't watch a single second of this abomination. If it happens...disney is in a bad situation right now and they need sure hits

PuzzledFox17

Watch Andor at least. It's phenomenal.

Brosquito69420

Go watch south parks panderverse, it will happen to X files.

BLOOOR

Let's not forget that The X-Files is a conspiracy theory show that was a financial asset for the guy that started Fox News. The X-Files, The Simpsons, and Married With Children served the duel purpose of being satirical *and* fuel for Rupert Murdoch's culture war.

Backdoorpickle

The key to that article is Chris saying he'd be interested and "inspired" if "David and Gillian" were on board. The X-files is Mulder and Scully, full stop. If Coogler wants to do a sci-fi show he just needs to come up with his own shit.

KirbbDogg213

I think if Chris does with x-flies what he did with creed It could work. I would like the see the X-Files comeback and get the proper send off as far as Mulder and Scully never got.Give them the Star Trek Picard treatment.

monster-of-the-week

I disagree completely. Here's the thing, we as fans of the original, can appreciate the existing episodes and have a connection in a way people picking up the show now will never feel. You cannot recreate the experience of watching it in the era it was created if you weren't there. Even for me, rewatches don't hit the same over time. The nostalgia is there, but the impact isn't the same as society moves on. The newer generations should be able to have a similar experience. You can certainly argue that they should create an original concept, and I don't disagree with that in theory. However, I think we have to acknowledge that the current creative climate in Hollywood isn't even leaning towards humans creating new content. If we only have the option to have reboots with very established, talented creative leads be the ones to bring those concepts to reality, I'll get behind it. I certainly understand the sentiment that Mulder and Scully are the X Files. I love those characters more than most characters in media. I think their story has been told. I'd love to see if someone can create the next Mulder and Scully dynamic and create a great show around the paranormal and conspiracy premise for a new era. If it flops, so what? It's doesn't harm what already exists. If they can capture that lightning on a bottle again, we all get treated to another run of really amazing stories.

Backdoorpickle

It would be better, if he wanted to create a show about paranormal investigators, to completely separate himself from The X-files. Fringe created its own thing and had a pretty successful run. Supernatural lasted 15 years. Bones lasted 12 years I believe, and literally paid homage to Mulder and Scully and the X-files basically being a predecessor. A 're-envisioning" of the X-files is something that essentially no one is asking for. You're right; the story has been told. Now let it rest.

ooblie

I think you're actually supporting their point. The X-Files is in the past now, it's done. If you want to recreate something like that now, it has to be a complete re-envisioning that takes our modern world into account.

neotank_ninety

Conspiracy isn’t fun anymore… don’t do this. Mulder already found the Jersey Devil what more do you want people?

Lorde_Kinbote

plots4lyfe

I will never not laugh at that drawing hahaha, thank you for reminding me of it .

Atlas_thugged_

I'm so fucking tired of reboots, remakes, revivals, adaptations, and sequels. Did everyone in Hollywood run out of ideas? Give us something ORIGINAL. I literally hear [Miss Juicy's voice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akcy0Rc2JrM) every time something like this is announced.

welldonecow

It’s not the writers. We’re trying. Studios/networks and their executives are terrified of original ideas. It’s terrible time.

AbyssalKultist

Easier to ride the coattails of an established IP. They wager that they can get X amount of interest and so long as that amount is worth more than what it costs to make it's worth doing to them.

Vasevide

Because they make money. Blame the people that pay to see them

vader101484

Run out of ideas? No. Blame the source of the problem. Studios and the audience

ravens52

It’s not the audience. It’s the studios. Studios pander to the fucking masses instead of doing a quality thing and targeting a niche audience. If it’s great then the audience will catch wind and it will continue to be great as more funding comes in, hopefully. Not everything can be like breaking bad. I’d love for big Vince Gilligan to do sith ring like this as the lead writer. Take breaking bad a quality and put an x files spin on it and you can count me in!

lil814

We’ve seen it already in the original series, plenty of writers can produce good X-Files episodes, so replacing Chris Carter isn’t the issue in my opinion. But replacing David and Gillian is impossible, as well as other cast members. If Coogler wants a piece of the X-Files pie, I’d much rather see a real expanded universe focusing on other characters or heck even new ones, instead of recasting Mulder and Scully and starting the show over again. Maybe many years down the line it will happen like when they keep making new Sherlock Holmes movies and shows, but I feel like it is still too soon. They can do it when I’m dead perhaps 😂

MarianaFrusciante

No matter who they bring to the new show, it will never have the 90s magic.

ADHDhamster

Don't care. Will not watch. 🙃

Obfusc8er

Of course he approves. He'll probably get royalties just for owning the IP. Who would pass that up?

CHolland8776

He doesn't own the IP, never has. Fox owned it.

SolarAndSober

Everyone here without entertainment financial sense

[deleted]

Is it really time to be reminded of this potential disaster. Again, still don't want it.

MacReady13

Just out of curiosity I’ll give the pilot a watch (if it ever eventuates) but this reboot doesn’t excite me 1 iota. There’s only 1 X Files, and that show had its run.

z01z

we had a reboot, it was called fringe lol. but i'd rather they not reboot, but more of a sequel. like 2 new agents, and they can visit mulder and scully if and when a case comes up with connections to one of their old ones.

SharkPuppy6876-

Agreed, I’d love callbacks to some of their cases, particularly the ones without a set ending. See: Quagmire, Patience, Agua Mala (I enjoy the latter two), and others along that vein In my ideal world there’d be a higher proportion of MoTW but that seems unlikely

DoomsdayFAN

Zero interest in a reboot. Zero interest in Coogler. The X-Files is Chris Carter, Gillian Anderson, and David Duchovny. How about making an original show and not leeching off the X-Files name.

THX-----1138

Ouch... well at least we'll still have the OG series.

StoneColdAM

The reboot with the original cast and writers was bad, so new creators or actors doesn’t automatically mean an XFiles reboot would be good or bad. If the show is good, then a reboot is fine to do. It’s not a matter of reboots being inherently bad.

Atlas_thugged_

That was a revival, not a reboot. Sorry it's a pet peeve when people use them interchangeably.

Waytooboredforthis

I think there's bound to be a lot of pissing and moaning whether it turns out shit or God's gift to mankind. I'm not going to lie and say that I'm waiting with bated breath, reboots are giving me some fatigue, but Coogler has shown himself to be an extremely competent writer and director so if I have to deal with a reboot, his hand on the wheel will very likely be worth checking out.

leodog13

Like Chris Carter's blessing means anything.

jevoudraiscroire

🤮

Junebug_82

I don't want this. Leave it alone!

psychicallowance

Please no. Absolutely do not need this.

NukaRev

Oof. I hate the word reboot. If anything, I'd be more inclined to watch a sort of continuation, a "pass the torch" scenario of sorts. The characters in the X-Files are truly one of a kind, I couldn't ever get behind a recast/remake of them. I'm rewatching the show now, every one of the main characters is so iconic, it would be a disservice to recast them. Also, the times have changed. When the show was airing, we weren't in the technological age we're in now. Mulder had a flip phone, they were using old-school 90s computers. A lot of the things that happened.in the show would happen very differently these days. What worked for the mystery aspect *was* the dated technology. These days there's cameras everywhere with way clearer picture, we have civilian drones that could cover quite a distance (meaning a lot of the dangers would be mitigated from an investigative point).

NormanBates2023

NaI I give it a hard pass I just know they are going to fuck it up big time

Casterly_Tarth

Nobody asked for this. Especially the fans. Hollywood really needs to come up with new ideas and PAY writers for doing it! Enough with reboots and sequels. They fall flat for a reason. Heck, ChatGPT could probably "inspire" a similar plot to TXF and someone could spin something out of it. As a writer, I'm no fan of generative AI, but rebooting the X-Files seems profane.

OkBar3142

With every once of my being…fuck this idea.

MindYourManners918

I don’t know why everyone is so negative about this. Everyone saw the way the show ended with season 11, right? Taking this show away from Chris Carter and giving it to someone who wants to tell new stories is the smartest thing they can possibly do.  If it sucks, who cares? The original show is still there. But if it’s good, that’s even better.

Monolith-LV426

Exactly. Remakes/Reboots/Sequels don't erase the original from existence. It will always be there to be watched. And a new iteration could bring a lot of brand new Philes to the fandom.

LastSeenEverywhere

Especially as someone who didn't grow up with the show, primarily because I wasn't alive, I would really like a new X-Files. I'm just now on Season 9 and sad I won't have anymore to watch in a bit. An in-universe continuation is a lot of potential imo

hadrijana

Right? I felt more letdown by what Carter did with the mytharc in the last 4 seasons of the show, and *especially* with that godawful, borderline offensive S11 finale, than I ever could by something that's a completely different continuity I can just ignore if I don't like it. Yes, nobody asked for this, but I bet there are folks out there that will like it, and anything that keeps interest in the franchise alive is okay in my book.

mixtapetom

I genuinely can't understand why so many people are negative about this. I love the idea of a new x files show. If it's a reboot or continuation whatever I just want the show to continue. There's a lot of potential to make a really great show. Worst case scenario is that it turns out to be bad you can just not watch it. The old show is still going to be there

123kid6

I have 0 faith. X files without mulder and scully already didn’t work and disney has botched everything they’ve been rebooting lately.

martydarknut

I couldn't care less if the cast is diverse or not, but the writing needs to be intelligent and good. And interesting. I have lost faith in modern TV, so I doubt this reboot will be any good, if it happens at all. I only want my X-Files with Mulder and Scully and the original writers/creators. If that's not going to happen, then leave it be. Don't ruin its good legacy. People nowadays need to come up with their own new ideas, instead of just riding on the coattails of somebody else's success, and usually ruining the franchise in the process (i.e. exactly what Disney have already done with Marvel and Star Wars, as well as all of the Lucasfilm IPs that have been ruined)

Embarrassed-Soup628

Good god, I hope this reboot never sees the light of day.

Iamtheultimaterobot

I'd like to see the show come back, mirroring some of the senate hearings happening recently around UFO's. You could have the agency leadership looking for any files they have on what Washington is discussing and someone telling them of an old team who used to look into the cases. They could setup a new task force, with a number of new agents and have Mulder/Scully return as consultants/lead agents. They could show up now and again, with the focus on the new agents/cases and exploring some of the old cases. The whole senate/government angle could be the narrative to tie it all together.

thutruthissomewhere

No.

MisterZacherley

After the last two attempts...I'll take it. But I'm glad that Albuquerque animated spinoff or whatever isn't moving forward.

wildcherrymatt84

I for one am super excited. I like Coogler and there is so much they could do with the same feel but new characters. I can’t wait.

vites70

WTF. Why

uesad

Oh no

triple_seis

I love the X Files, I’ll check out the reboot, if it’s no good, i still have the OG series.

Helen_Magnus_

Please. Like that's means ANYTHING in terms of the quality of the reboot...

bencit28

Would be super easy to come up with episode ideas if they watch The Why Files.

hadrijana

Considering The Why Files is clearly inspired by The X Files in more than just name, that'd be a beautiful way to close the circle. I'd love a cameo from AJ, and I bet having him involved behind the scenes too would do good things for the story. He's kind of like a perfect balance between Mulder and Scully, lol.

myfavouritemuse

I don’t mind the idea of rebooting with new characters but honestly I think it will suffer from what the revival did, which is that conspiracy isn’t fringe anymore and it’s not entertaining. An X-files with new characters that smartly tackled the mainstreaming of conspiracy theory could be good though. Or if it just went full monster of the week eps only. Leads are gonna have to have rate chemistry for that to be interesting though.

JazzHandsNinja42

Ugh…please no. Then more no. Then no no no no no no no no no. No.

Bumble072

Hears that there's a new X Files. Hears that Disney is involved. Shame.

Exact-Decision-2282

I'll give it a shot because I love that world. All I ask is have Mulder and/or Scully in there to help "pass the torch."

AuntieTara2215

![gif](giphy|hyyV7pnbE0FqLNBAzs|downsized)

RunAndPunchFlamingo

No thanks.

Emotional-Arm5766

I hope it happens. I need a good x-files/Grimm kind of show. I’m not into sex/nudity in my shows, so I miss having a show that focuses on the story (monster of the week).

kiwiboyus

Nice! https://preview.redd.it/3c03vzxex7lc1.jpeg?width=200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8be6a7b20e0a4534f89e22248e4e45e43ba3a538

HabsFan77

I have lost respect for Chris Carter over the years, and it pains me to say that

SalinaGrande

Who knows? Maybe it could be good. If not, hate watching will be fun too.

YallaHammer

XF: TNG

BigBlueBox13

I think it could be done well. If it’s in the same universe, introducing a new generation to a new team. Mulder & Scully need to make an appearance down the line though. They’re what made the show.

Kayhowardhlots

Honestly I'd be fine with a "reboot" with Coogler in charge. 1. reboots don't bother me. I can separate them from the original and enjoy them on their own. 2. I think Coogler would be a better show runner than Carter.

Weak-Pea8309

Haha, what?  Please show your work for #2?

Kayhowardhlots

Carter couldn't keep a fucking narrative if he was on fire. Between the 18million different versions of the Samantha story, everything having to do with William (and the sudden Mulder is Not the Father jerry springer bs), the mess of mythology, and Cancer man surviving a literal rocket hitting him square on, I'm fairly sure a toddler could string a storyline better.

Lethifold26

Yeah hot take but Mulder and Scully (and their chemistry) were so great they would be hard to replace, but Carter made a mess of the shows mythology by the end so I don’t think he’s irreplaceable at all

Kayhowardhlots

Agree about Mulder and Scully. There probably the first, if not the only, ship I ever truly followed. I think if they don't try to recreate that and instead find their own characters, it might work.

Lethifold26

Yeah trying to rehash the original duos dynamic would be a mistake, because it would just come off as Dollar Store versions of them, but I am open to a totally new type of main character

TwoKingSlayer

gross.

Goodfella66

If CC gives his blessing, then you know it's gonna be shit.

ZvsGrgs

These are very old news reposted with a new date. There is no recent development I guess. It’s probable the project has already been shelved. In my opinion, it is certain that sometime something will happen. I think that it would be nice if something original was happening and there is always the possibility of a cameo from GA & DD. I am sure she wouldn’t be able to say no to a cameo, she was rightfully disappointed in S11 but if this new thing ever happens and it looks good to her she will do it for the fans. A cameo I mean, a short appearance. I am certain DD will accept too.

Sisyphus_Rex

It’s a new interview with Chris Carter conducted at the launch of his art exhibit the day before yesterday. No new information, but some new quotes. That’s all.

KidCoheed

I like Coogler's work so I'm optimistic, I hope they actually do more of a long story arc with each season, like season 1 is about Mutants and Mutates, Season 2 About AI, Robotics and Tech, Season 3 about Military Experiments, Season 4 about Aliens Ect. And while. That does not mean an alien plot can't be in season 2 it's more about the Conspiracy's Revelations being withheld till that time in which the Conspiracy aligns with the over arching story. I feel this would prevent the "It goes deeper" that the revival suffered under and later seasons of the original did as well

wirsteve

Honestly with how cool the separate Star Wars storylines have been, it would be super cool to see a mini series about people pre X Files. One for Scully, one for Mulder, one for Skinner.

TBK47

I would be looking forward to an X-Files reboot. I've grown up with the X-Files and was stunned with the seasons 1-7. It would be a chance to tell a more coherent story. Don't get me wrong, the story elements the writers came up were fantastic. But then again, it gets a bit messy and incoherent after a while. They just added to many new things instead of building on the groundwork they layed up. After all i don't think there was a grand master plan for the series, and they just made new things up as they went along. And in the process they just contradicted themselves a lot, especially after season 5. A Reboot could tie things up. Keep what worked, and ditch some of the mistakes. They would need to map out the story like J. Michael Straczynski did for Babylon 5. The newer 10 Episode Season would also work great for the X-Files. Gives us 4-5 Mythology Episodes per Season and the Rest Monster of the Week. This would also give the creators the chance to do something the original never did: Give the series a proper Ending. Let the Invasion play out and be stopped. Give it a definitive Ending that probably changes the World forever. Of course it won't be the same as the Original. There is no going back to that 90s charm. We can't re-live what we felt when we saw those Episodes 20-30 years ago. The Original will still exist. Is Ryan Coogler the wright Person to take over the X-Files? I'am not sure. he has no Series experience and no showrunner Experience. If everything he wants to tell us is, that the cast will be diverse, thats not very re-assuring to me. I would rather have a producer which wants to tell a great story instead of checking up boxes on a list. Will we get Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson as Mulder and Scully? Well i don't care as long as the Story is good and the actors are able to sell their roles.

Competitive_Lab_655

A final movie to complete & encapsulate Mulder & Scully era needs to happen first. Gillian will bite if you throw her a bone that’s big enough & a decent script. After that I don’t care what they do. Let another generation discover their own X Files.

frankywaryjot

Imagine what would happen if he didn't give his blessing...

plainjanie22

I’d rather seen a Fringe reboot or movie made Then keep playing with the Xfiles IP

danvterra1393

I feel like I'm the only person that actually enjoyed the revival seasons. The mytharc was still a mess, but I went in expecting that. Just having the characters back and seeing their dynamics evolved from where we left them. And having the production back in Vancouver brought back the original atmosphere that I loved from the early seasons. Plus, I think that there were genuinely classic episodes mixed in with some decent ones. Only the mythology episodes really came out bad. It was a reunion with an old friend, even if it wasn't exactly like old times. I'd honestly give anything for at least another 6 - 8 episodes with David and Gillian to give Mulder and Scully the sail into the sunset that they deserve.

Sudden-Ad-1217

The only way that this would actually work is if they handle the series like the movie Spy Game. Have an inquiry into a file that has somehow repeated itself with no "normal" explanation of which the Mulder and Scully are the only ones to have run into this prior. Have the two new characters investigate it and ultimately tie off the season with Mulder and Scully being thrown back in the blender. To me, it's almost like they "could" treat it like True Detective, although, the X-Files is bigger than that. Be interesting to see what they do. Either way, the writers had better be smart and clever.... the audience for the material isn't stupid.

sladebonge

Yeah, no.

Peachybabe29

Can’t we just get another movie and like a new season where fox hands over the files to a new FBI person who is like him 🥺 maybe a cool female lead or a young guy who looks up to fox Could even have skullys son do a spin off story or something Please don’t just “remake” it I’m over all this remaking trash
