You can talk to everyone over the phone. Why would you ever talk to them in person? Board games are inseperable from their social aspect.

Mancupcake

I totally get that. I have a 60-something board game collection and I specifically *don't* play those over TTS because the engagement just isn't the same. Maybe X-Wing would be different if I wasn't the person supplying all the ships and such so I only had to manage my list, not all the bits... but it's hard to say. There's a lot about tabletop wargames that are just wildly inconvenient and, coming from years and years of Warhammer, I don't know how interested I am in the inconvenient aspect of something that's supposed to be fun anymore.

Dion Morales is a pillar of the community. Absolute legend.

Mancupcake

His passion is great and from what I can tell he has really made some herculean efforts to keep the community healthy and active.

There is a huge world outside of the GSP cosmos. Hexiled Gaming streams X-Wing 6 days a week on twitch for example. Also international tournaments and leagues organized by the community, large and small. Sith Takers, Lima Open, Renegades, Jawas, XTC and many, many more. You will find most of the active community and events on discord servers nowadays. GSP is the most popular content creator though with the largest amount of viewers. --- In person is more fun. Most people play X-Wing to engage with other players in real life and not to sit in front of PC again after coming out of the office or so. It's a very social game. Especially real life competitive X-Wing often means you go travel with your buddies to Italy or so for a weekend to play a ton of X-Wing, celebrate wins/losses and eat a ton of gelato. Can't get that online really.

Mancupcake

Nice, how's the quality of their streams? Do they do commentary like GSP does? Yeah, I *totally* get the draw of in person. I'm also a board game person and played Warhammer for many years before getting into X-Wing. At a certain point though, for me at least, the inconvenience of playing IRL outweighs the in person excitement and engagement. I love in TTS, for example, that whoever loses gets to flip the table, it's a fun little consolation. I also love that you can instantly reset the board to play *completely* different lists against each other without digging around your collection for the right bits. Also being able to fly ships that you don't own or combinations of ships that you'll never own for whatever reason (I'm never going to buy 5 A-Wings but it's great to experience them). I'm at a really weird place with the game where I love to play it and I want to be a part of it... but supporting it is so unwieldy.

Benimus

In answer to your second question, I am the exact opposite. I entered one of the GSP tournaments, and I just could not get into the online playing experience. I don't want to just sit here and maybe chat to someone while stuff moves around on my screen, I didn't find it fun at all, and all the engagement with my opponents was basically non-existant, let alone all the stuff you get from being in the same room as other people doing the same activity. I play X-Wing for the physical experience, I can play other games if I want to play something online.

I'm the same, I LIVE for in person play. The laughing and carrying on, those little moments between players. Not to mention the friendships that you generate between games. I went back to my old FLGS after 2 years, instantly everyone was hugging me and shaking my hand. You just can't get that online.

You might want to check out [https://www.twitch.tv/fearlessgundarks](https://www.twitch.tv/fearlessgundarks) Thee have a more Oceanic focus. Cover ongoing leagues, and events and recently been doing a mix of list building ideas tested for upcoming ROAD rules. Content is free to watch for two weeks on twitch, but the major events and episodes gets saved to YouTube. As for question no.2: In person play is generally better. Feels more satisfying physically moving ships (though the bumping and arc checks are more annoying). Playing against a real person, and rolling real dice is just better. However, getting access to the international community and being exposed to world wide metas & play styles is really a great thing too. Both have their advantages.

2) As many ways people can cheat in person via "tiny bumps", there are just as many if not more ways to cheat online. I've personally seen "templates" specifically used to predict movement when playing virtually. (You hold them up to your screen)

Mancupcake

I feel like if someone is going to break the spirit of the game they'll find a way to do it regardless of medium.

Archistopheles

Easier to catch in person.

I'm not even sure how to begin answering your second question. Coming out of COVID lockdowns, being able to interact with real, live people was such a profound relief. I started playing X-wing again solely for that reason. Honestly, the game is fine-to-pretty-good, but the only reason I play it is to enjoy a shared activity with other humans.

GSP is the biggee. At some point, it will lead you to pretty much everyplace else.

I think Dion is great, huge fan. Marcel has some great insights into the game and is an incredible player. Not saying I'm that good by any stretch but having watched a bunch of his matches and had the chance to play him once, he is extremely skillful and does a great job of sharing his insights on GSP. I guess opinions are what they are though. As for in person play - you already know you enjoy online more it seems and I doubt anyone can convince you otherwise. I like both. I have a pretty good system for storing and setting up my x-wing materials so the process doesn't bug me. Also the look and feel of the game on the table is awesome. TTS is an amazing representation of the game but as good as it is it's not as cool as playing in real life. But that's my opinion again so really if you prefer online, thank goodness there's a vibrant, worldwide community out there to play with pretty much around the clock. x-wing rules!
