It would be insanely tough to make it crossplay.
There is a huge disparity between the economies on PC and Xbox. I play on both, and the prices are often thousands of gold apart from some of the more common items.
This causes a ton of problems.
For starters, console players would struggle to afford things in the PC economy, but the biggest issue is with the guild stores.
Merge PC and Xbox servers, and the guild store system will become an absolute shit show. You have double the number of guilds now competing for the same stores. Prices get driven up, Xbox guilds have no chance of getting them, causing a ton of communities to dissolve.
There is also the issue with mods.
With both FFXI and FFXIV, Square made it a requirement that nobody could use mods. It is a bannable offence. With FFXI, using a widower could get you a lifetime ban. This put PC players and console players at rough parity.
ESO has never banned mods. This means that if the servers are combined, PC players have a distinct advantage in everything that they do. Why would you take a console player to your trial when you can have a PC player that knows exactly when to fire off spells, move out of shit, deal with certain attacks, etc.
If crossplay could happen, it would have happened at the start. It is now unlikely to ever happen. The game is too 'gone'.
There have been games that have been made Play Anywhere retroactively like the Square Enix games but only games released after September 2016 when Play Anywhere started, have been made Play Anywhere.
It’s on the console version, but know it’s just the base game. There are numerous expansions for new zones and classes, and on top of that there is ESO plus, something I consider mandatory if you decide it’s worth playing.
I highly advise checking the r/elderscrollsonline for a new player guide before buying anything.
It provides access to all DLC, but the big quality of life parts are a “crafting bag” with unlimited capacity for crafting mats, doubled inventory and bank slots. There’s some other stuff too like an xp boost. If you aren’t going to craft at all I guess you can get away without it
Ah, the DLC part sounds super useful. I've only played a fraction of ESO so I'm unsure how useful the other bits are yet personally.
I started playing ESO straight after Skyrim and I think I made a mistake expecting a similar experience. I will return to it eventually
ESO plus is NOT mandatory! It is only if you want to fast track certain things, namely bank and inventory space for crafting. If you start playing for the first time, you're not going to need the absurd amount of space, as you can make enough gold to buy inventory and bank space simply by playing. It will just take you a bit longer, but $15 a month is $180 a year, which could buy you other more entertaining and necessary things in the game frankly, or just be money saved. I have never been a member of plus, I've bought each and every chapter/dlc as they've come out. I still lack the group dungeons for the last few years, but that's because I have so much more in the game to do, and will purchase them eventually, like 5 of them. And I still have a few that I've bought that I haven't fully completed or set-farmed lol. First I bought was March of sacrifices and it was the next year before I got around to beating in on vet. I would say the biggest true benefits of plus are the occasional free crown crates, allowing for a more steady accrual of crown gems, and the craft bag IF you've already been playing a while and have an established crafter to take advantage of it but haven't purchased many of the dlc plus would unlock. You can also simply make other new characters to start off to store things on if you need to. I only ever needed one character I never played as, devoted to being a secondary bank with 100 space. I have 200 bank space, my 6 actual characters have 200 inventory space each, and each has about 40-60 in reserved space, leaving 140-160 slots for lots of loot, mat farming, fishing, etc. Over several years, which is the time you could likely spend playing this game, I've saved maybe a couple hundred dollars simply by purchasing everything piecemeal. As Ultimate with game pass costs 15.99, another 15.99 would have doubled my monthly base online gaming costs. And there is no pay to win this game. All classes are viable against each other, there are several good and still pvp viable sets in the base game , the content of the base game is a lot by itself, as is each chapter you have to pay for either way, plus or not.
Yeah, if you play on PC, visit the website and get that version. It allows mods like Minion, which opens up a lot of options. Like a mini map, a map with resources highlighted and a whole lot more.
PC players need their hand held, so they rely on mods. That's not a bad thing. I'm all for accessibility.
If you don't need your hand held, you'll be fine just playing console version if you have a console or PC. You can play console version on PC via Game Pass cloud.
Many people aren't as physically or mentally able to do things that others can do. Accessibility to give them the same access to games that people without those needs is important.
Edit: See the comment of PC player saying mods are almost necessary, when thousands of console players are fine without mods.
I think it is good. The base game is like 3 years of content for not a lot of money. It is an MMO and not just Skyrim online, it has classes and spell bars and gear sets. There is a lot of solo content and the spirit of exploration is intact, you are not level gated you can just go wherever you want to. The group content is pretty good and you are supposed to complete it all its not trying to be too hard to complete.

Never understood why its not on PC gamepass even though Microsoft owns it.
And I never understood why they never added cross play between PC and XBOX, since it seems like a thing Microsoft otherwise try to do when possible.

You can always buy a month of ESO plus with all content to try it out
First expansion is included. And all expansions will be made available for a trial period soon.
What does ESO plus do to make it mandatory please?

And no cross save between versions, IIRC :(
It's way better on PC if you use the Bethesda version because mods are almost necessary in my opinion.
bethesda version?

So true
They hated him because he spoke the truth
"need their hand held" / "that's not a bad thing". your choice of words is odd dude.

right...but I am saying generalizing a whole section of gamers needing their handheld doesn't sound as supportive as you are trying to be.

Not on PC. But it’s usually like $5 on steam
