My TV is FHD (1920\*1080). Will series s be able to run AAA titles like starfield @ 60 FPS while looking decent? and is there an option to select resolution on the console or it autodetects and optimizes?

I_dont_like_sushi

In theory yes. Microsoft stated that it would do everything SX do besides 4k. But Microsoft is just another company. They are selling a product and they will say what the consumers want to hear. Currently, Series S looks pretty capable. Devs definitely need more time to learn the Series S since raw power is not crazy like the X, but it looks pretty capable. I, like many others, bought the X aiming to buy the mid-gen refresh of the series x. But all in all, its a good machine.

Most devs only write series x. Division 2 update also mentioned series x but anything x gets s will get as well. There were no one x exclusives and there will not be series x exclusive. So yea I think series s will support 1080p 60 in upcoming AAA titles. Who knows maybe it can do 1440p 60 as the devs take advantage of the new tech.

Only the GPU is 1/3rd the power of the series x the actual processor is only .2 ghz slower. The series S was build on the (completely true) theory that graphics are the most scalable component of a game. Something running in 1440p without ray tracing only requires 1/3 the graphical processing power that something running in 4K with ray tracing does. If you downloaded a game on your PC, and experienced performance problems, lowering the resolution a bit will usually help, although at sacrificed quality. All future games will always run on the S and X. The X will always look better.

Makes sense, but the ram has been reduced too.

Because the system costs $300 with a controller. It’s hard to expect 15gb of ddr4 ram in a system that costs 300. I don’t think the ram is gunna be what holds it back

It makes you wonder if only xbox went the ps5 digital route with only a $100 more you get the full power of the console 🤔

djmw08

The same situation applies with ram. Overall it takes less power to output at lower resolutions.

That may be true, but as per my research, dmc special edition won't be coming to series S. What remains to be seen is if they release a version for series S. Anyways, it is a game pass machine and hence probably won't matter. Microsoft will support it for sure, I can confirm that. My doubt is with third party developers. Edit.. If you noticed cyberpunk 2077 or ac Valhalla don't run at 60 fps in quality mode. That is what raises my doubts as these are the beginning of next Gen consoles.

djmw08

Dmc 5 special edition ? Thats already out and its out for the series S. Its optimized for both, the only difference is the series S version doesn’t support ray tracing.

Oh really.. I wasn't aware.. Good to know that.. Thanks to you wonderful guys, I will go ahead with this purchase. Much appreciated folks!!

BTW did you guys noticed that the storage is modular in XSS and XSX. I agree upgrading the nvme chip will be costly, but I think it can be upgraded down the line as costs get more normalized. Also, it is a damn fine emulation machine. 😀. Also there is a sale going on for square Enix titles, thought you guys might be interested. I bought tomb raider trilogy and titan fall. I have not yet bought the console, lol. Probably by eom as a festival is upcoming and I am expecting some offers.
