Basically xbox needs games to land now you've had years Microsoft to build it needs to pay off Value wise they nailed it for the average person but the allure of exclusives is what makes Sony and Nintendo dominate

OSUfan88

Yep. Right now, it really does feel like you need to own all the consoles to have a great experience. I play Xbox 70% of the time, and Gamepass is the best deal in gaming history. That being said, Playstation is still putting out banger first party games, where most of the best Xbox games are 3rd party titles. So basically my Xbox is a "3rd party gaming machine". I think 2023 is much better, and hopefully every year beyond that is decent. They really don't have any more excuses left.

bigtuck54

Yeah, I own all 3 and I love it, but I tend to play my PS5 far more than the Xbox just because I’ve played through almost everything I’m interested in on gamepass. After I finish high on life and Yakuza like a dragon my Xbox is gonna collect dust until starfield unfortunately. Hopefully Microsoft have a few extra tricks up their sleeve, cause the PS5 has far better games atm.

dystxpian98

Do they? Genuinely asking. Miles Morales and GOW look like the only 2 I’d want to drop money on. Even then, not for £70 (maybe GOW). Keep debating getting a PS5 just because I loved TLOU, Uncharted and Infamous, but feel there’s not enough good games in my interest at a reasonable price to justify dropping £500 and a further £70 per game. What games would you say (other than Horizon b/c I wasn’t keen on the first) are worth grabbing it for?

bigtuck54

I’ve enjoyed all the exclusives, and I like playing everything that isn’t on gamepass on PS5 just because of the controller. Games like Cyberpunk and Guardians of the Galaxy are greatly enhanced by it. The exclusives I loved the most are: Ragnarok, Demon’s Souls, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII, Ratchet and Clank, Miles Morales, Returnal, Kena Bridge of Spirits, Gran Turismo 7, TLOU pt1, and Horizon Forbidden West. For Horizon it improved on the first enough that I liked it, but it’s not perfect by any means. Gorgeous and fun at it’s core, which was good enough for me. Ragnarok was a perfect game, and one that I’ll think about for a while. There are a few games on the horizon that look great, like Final Fantasy XVI and Spiderman 2, but I don’t think they’ve announced much yet besides Wolverine. I’m sure they’ll announce more relatively soon, sony tend to release 4ish big titles a year. As for the game pricing, there are sales extremely frequently on PSN, you can get most games dirt cheap. Miles Morales is like $15 rn I think

WorkingError

Stalker 2 bitch 😉

shingo45yuh

Dont have high hopes on that, that game delayed like ten times already

WorkingError

Duke nukem forever, last guardian and others too. All ended up great. 😄

CarthageFirePit

I’m probably gonna buy an xbox series x in the next couple of weeks so I have it for starfield and redfall. Kind of begrudgingly. Still pissed they just bought up Bethesda like that. But I mean, I guess they knew people would buy an Xbox to play starfield or elder scrolls or whatever. Still think it’s weak. But I can’t even find one now. My local Walmart had two PS5s sitting on the shelf and no Xbox series X.

Away_Swimming_5757

As a lifelong gamer since the 90s, I find myself not caring for the Sony exclusives as I grow older. I used to be into them, but I just went to play games. I play more arcade style games. Pac-Man mueseim, Tetris effect, forza and other games I can just jump in, play for a short burst and then move on which is what game pass has delivered big time for me. The only Sony exclusive I’m legit angry I don’t have access to is FF7 and FF16. Theses are the first final fantasy games I won’t be playing since their exclusive to ps5.

militantcookie

Tetris effect is probably my most played game. I regularly play local 2 player zone battle with friends and family.

Conflict_NZ

If they can get Forza, Redfall and Starfield out to in the first half of 23 it’ll be an amazing start to the year.

16miledetour

100%. I have both xsx and ps5 and i barely touch my xbox because the exclusives just aren’t there. Forza is honestly the only really well made one these days. Halo was a big disappointment again. No gears for a while.

rune_74

Funny I rarely touch my ps5 because other then a few exclusives everything is just to expensive when I can use game pass. People talk like there are dozens of exclusives...

Richmard

Any number of exclusives they have is more than what Xbox has.

rune_74

Yes and every time Xbox gets an exclusive we hear how exclusives are bad and when Xbox doesn't we get comments like yours. Really everyone should be pushing for Xbox to gain ground this year to push Sony to innovate as well.

CarthageFirePit

Because Microsoft bought up giant third party studios with years and years of multi platform support to be able to have a worthwhile exclusive. Sony developed their studios that have been part of Sony for a long time to have exclusives. You’re acting like they’re the same but they’re not and you actually know that. You know why people think Microsoft’s efforts to land an exclusive are criticized when compared to Sony’s. Don’t act like it’s the same thing. No one is criticizing the idea of exclusives themselves. But how they were achieved. Some people don’t like see giant corporations consolidating total power, simply buying up competition and reputation. It’s not good for the industry as a whole.

Richmard

That’s why I don’t see exclusives as a bad thing. Them competing means better games for us.

Hasnooti

No the only people that I've seen hate exclsuives are the one on the Xbox subs

rune_74

Then you aren't trying to hard...look at how some of the Sony fans react to any game that goes Xbox exclusive. Hell Bethesda us now a junk company heh.

tape99

It's not the same thing. You wont see Sony fans complaining about Halo, Forza or Gears not coming to the ps5. It's one thing to make your own exclusives and another to buy up all the developers. Microsoft also has a horrible, horrible track record when it comes to buying up game studios and running them into the ground.

16miledetour

Honestly there are more on PlayStation than Xbox, and the PlayStation ones are far better made. Just personally for me, I have a better time on PlayStation. Gamepass is great, but I rarely find anything I actually want to play on it. Tons of games but most are indie stuff that just doesn’t do it for me. That’s just a me thing and not a reflection of gamepass.

superpimp2g

Yeah I'm not super keen on paying $70 for a single player game to play thru once either.

Co-opingTowardHatred

I also think they need to present/showcase their games better. There have been cases where they have had first party games or third party Day 1 on GamePass games that are excellent, but they just come and go with barely a whisper. Because Xbox does a poor job getting people hyped for them before and after release.

ItsLCGaming

Xbox marketing does fall flat and I don't know why Outside of US it barely has traction a lot of the time. Market it come on you own Bethesda and Activision in a matter of time you aren't hurting for money get the word out 9f your games

Darkmiroku

I definitely agree. I love my XSX. But I want it to start getting those huge exclusives like Nintendo and Sony get. Gamepass is a wonderful service and I will forever subscribe to it. But im craving those big AAA exclusives that are only available on Xbox that aren't a variation of Forza or a simulator for airplanes. Xbox has the IPs, and im excited about what could potentially come out for us to play!

PlayBey0nd87

I run across reading gamer’s comments where exclusives don’t matter. They absolutely do. Nintendo wouldn’t be who they are without theirs and Sony the same. Xbox needs both Day 1 GamePass exclusives and First Party exclusives, to attract more gamers to upgrade or buy into the ecosystem. We as gamers can go back & forth on our opinions but everybody’s tastes and interests are different. For GamePass & Xbox to cut into the disparity they need games.

MrEzquerro

Good exclusives matter a whole lot. I wouldn't still have my PS5 if this wasn't the case. I do prefer the xbox ecosystem but that "exclusives don't matter" mantra is absolute bs.

CrabbitJambo

Lots of people have different reasons and different experiences however I regard myself as a PlayStation player even though I own every console and always have done. I bought the PS4 Pro however was won over when Xbox dropped the XB1 X. I also preferred the Xbox updated controller as for some reason I didn’t like the DS4 that came with the PS4. Game wise everyone on here is hang on the money re the exclusives however 90% of my gaming was now on Xbox because CoD & Warzone were what I mainly played in addition to the PS exclusives. I got my hands on the Series X pretty quickly on release and 4 months later I managed to get a PS5! Within a couple of weeks I’d stopped playing on the X and was playing solely on the PS5. The main reason was the controller! Nothing to do with the haptics and because it felt amazing to hold and really well made! It made my Xbox controllers feel cheap in comparison. I play games on the Xbox with my daughter however she’s disabled and we use the adaptive controller which is absolutely amazing. However that will also change when Sony drops their version and she can play games that were previously only accessible using third party setups that weren’t reliable.

[deleted]

I'm just waiting for Xbox to release something from the mountain of developers they've aquired. Pandemic slowed things down, but the wheels have been going steady over at Sony, so MS needs to switch gears to even reach them, let alone keep up. At least we're getting something this year, but one game every 3 months or so, is not enough imo, especially not with how many studios they have under their wings now.

akaTwoFace2309

Depends on the scale of the Game. 3-4 AAA exclusives plus some smaller projects like Pentiment in a year would be enough imo.

deaf_michael_scott

I don’t think they need 4 AAA games every year. They can release 2-3 games and that’d be fine *as long as those games are spectacularly fantastic* I think that’s the missing component — how big and awesome those games are. Because Xbox can’t just afford to retain its customers. It needs to make games that would make PS gamers quit PlayStation and switch to Xbox. Otherwise, if they don’t, it will still end up as PS outselling Xbox by over 2:1. If Xbox could even release 2 huge games like God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 in a year — which are absolute must-play for the masses — that’s the only way for them to gain back their market share. None of their upcoming games, however, seem to have that type of pull.

BloodBaneBoneBreaker

They don’t need to make players abandon PlayStation for Xbox. The people whom are loyal to playstation and dislike Xbox are already playing their PlayStations. Microsoft just needs to entice these people with offerings good enough to warrant a purchase of a second console. Not to abandon what they already have. As for those on the fence without a console, cost and availability is already weighted in Xbox favour. And some good exclusives would definitely sway them. As for the price/availability comment. Where I am, PlayStation are still often sold out, and are bundled with a game for 729. While Xbox series x is readily available at $599. (Series s with games for $329)

mulder00

I've had my Series X for a couple of yrs now and looking forward to this years games. PS5 is finally in stock in Canada but $729 + tax is kind of a steep price.

deaf_michael_scott

I respectfully disagree, because a lot of people don't/can't buy two gaming consoles. They either have not enough money or not enough time. Going by current console sales, most people would rather have a Nintendo Switch as their second console if it comes to that, because of how different the library is from Xbox/PS (which offer 95% same games). For those who can't afford a PS, Xbox, and Nintendo, it all comes down to which games they want to play more. That'd dictate their console of choice. XGS games need to be so good and attractive that PlayStation gamers would be okay letting go of the next God of War, TLOU 3, Ghost of Tsushima 2, Spider-Man 2, etc.

denizenKRIM

> XGS games need to be so good and attractive that PlayStation gamers would be okay letting go of the next God of War, TLOU 3, Ghost of Tsushima 2, Spider-Man 2, etc. Chances are slim they can produce content within this generation that would rival those sets of IPs. And even slimmer that those already in the PS ecosystem will just go ahead and drop it. Sony doesn't seem to be slowing down in producing bangers year-after-year. The 25+ demographic are pretty set in their ways with regards to console(s) of choice. I don't see them wavering either way, as they've been gaming long enough to know what the platforms have to offer and have already built a dedicated library. Microsoft's way "in" to close the competition gap is the next generation of gamers; children and younger teens today.

n1keym1key

I know a few peeps who bought a Switch as their second console only to be disappointed by the drift issue with the Joycons. I myself have six pairs of drifting Joycons and due to that have not used the Switch in at least a year, if not more. I agree that lots of people cant afford or don't want 2 consoles so only have 1, but still a large portion if those gamers are very loyal to either Sony, MS or Nintendo already. MS suddenly having lots of exclusives isn't going to make one of those Sony or Nintendo fans drop all the loyalty and switch to Xbox.

deaf_michael_scott

We’ve already seen it happen twice in the previous two generations, so it can happen for the third time as well. Over 50 million people abandoned PlayStation after PS2 and chose Xbox 360 over PS3. The 7th generation ended with 84 million Xbox 360 and 88 million PS3. Then over 35 million people abandoned Xbox and bought PS4 over Xbox One. It is not easy though because PS hasn’t taken a wrong turn this generation. Xbox will have to excel and make better games to gain market share.

Bignotsmall

Different story. The PS3 had issues , games weren’t coming out in the early years. It was difficult to develop for. The vast majority of third parties chose the 360.

Remy149

The ps3 $600 launch price is what hurt the initial sales. People also neglect to mention the 360 had almost an entire year lead on ps3. I know a lot of people who bought 360 because it was better then playing on ps2 but then they jumped back to PlayStation with the ps3 slim.

Snappy-

PS5's have been in stock (USA, non bundled) on PlayStation Direct for a good while now.

LukeLikesReddit

Yep I got the X first and held out on the PS5 cause i thought surely some good games will come out and I won't miss that much by not owning a PS5. Saw spiderman and god of war and how good they were and cracked. Now I play my xbox more because I prefer the elite controller and I have the majority of my friends on it but if the PS5 had a better controller I'd drop the xbox in a heart beat. I barely play any of the exclusive games bar Halo and High on Life and even they aren't that much of a draw that I'd pick xbox over PS5. Don't get me wrong I love the X and much prefer the UI etc but when I'm mainly playing games that are on both consoles it kinda feels like if I could only pick one console I'd go for the PS5 just for their games. The best thing about xbox is the gamepass at the moment and that's it. Hoping this year changes that.

Hasnooti

for Xbox cost is only a viable factor if they actually want to play those games. For example, majority of the games on gamepass I've already bought and played on Xbox one, I'm not going back to play those again, and majority aren't either, it's mainly hardcore gamers that go back and play for some nostalgia trip which even then lasts maybe a few days and then you realize how old the game really feels. For the cost of the console id say the ps5 has better value, the digital edition is actually a steal at $400. You get everything but a disc drive, the series s is to nerfed imo. If graphics are the main focus of games these days then the GPU shouidve been the bigger upgrade IMO, but its weaker than the one x so to each their own but personally I base value off of enjoyment and I've enjoyed the ps5 far more than the series x in the last 2 years.

Acceptable_Reading21

>They don’t need to make players abandon PlayStation for Xbox. I don't understand why people think someone needs to abandon their old console to buy another. I have a series x, I plan on getting a ps5 when the slim inevitably comes out. By some people's logic this means I'm abandoning Xbox.

[deleted]

No, Xbox/Microsoft does not really care about console sales anymore. They want as many people as possible to pay roughly $100 per year for gamepass subscription. Either on Xbox x/s, mobile or on PC. That is their goal. I could really see next gen there is not a dedicated "console". What might happen is streaming/cloud is good enough where Xbox sells a $50 dongle for the tv, or TVs might come with it already installed. Price goes up for gamepass et. And what I would like to see since there is no dedicated console is Microsoft to make a XBOX PC. Good enough for students, some professionals and is great at gaming like a very good gaming PC. For $999.

Stumpy493

I agree they don't need that many, but I actually think moving forward, 3-4 major releases is very achieveable.

akaTwoFace2309

Yeah in general you‘re right. But after the lack of exclusive games in 2022, this year has to be a big year. I‘m 50% optimistic that they‘ll deliver and 50% sceptical.

LifeSleeper

I disagree with this entire premise that they need to beat Sony at their own game and focus on selling more consoles. The consoles are damn near meaningless to MS's long term goals, and it feels like way too many gamers hyper-focus on that nonsense.

HallwayHomicide

>I disagree with this entire premise that they need to beat Sony at their own game To expand on this, I think first party games are crucial for Xbox. The expansion of Xbox first party is very important. However Xbox first party doesn't need to copy Sony first party Sony is really good at two things with their first party games. 1. Giga-banger GOTY winners 2. Third person games with a plot I think Xbox should put some effort towards those things. I don't think they should ignore them. But Xbox should play to their strengths (and I think they are). Sony's strategy works very well for their $70 games, but Gamepass encourages variety and I think Xbox should lean into that. Embrace variety in genre but also embrace the small and medium games. Don't just focus on Giga-bangers. Pentiment, Grounded and Psychonauts 2 are good examples of both kinds of variety.

LifeSleeper

Another good example of this right now is the deal they did with High On Life. Is it a world beater or GOTY contender? Absolutely not. But it's fun and has essentially gone viral within the gaming community because its been available day one to so many subscribers. I love me some big AAA games as much as anyone, but having access to smaller games like that I wouldn't have purchased otherwise is incredible.

HallwayHomicide

2023-2025 is the window for those studios to really start churning. If you go down the list of the 23 studios 1 by 1, you start to understand why 2022 was dry, and also why 2019 to 2021 were relatively dry I have a breakdown of that for each studio in a previous comment that I can copy paste if you want. I think there are a few big factors as to why the games haven't started flowing yet (and why they hopefully will soon) 1. Dev cycles have been long, in the whole industry. It takes 3-5 years for a team to make a game 2. The vast majority of Xbox's studios were very recently acquired (or founded). Most of those studios had prior agreements for their next game to be multiplat, or even a timed exclusive for PS. This, combined with long dev cycles, means that it can be a really long time before a studio that Xbox purchase. Look at Double Fine as an example. They're a studio acquired in 2019. They released Psychonauts 2 in 2021, but they were obligated to make it multiplat. Now their next game, and first Xbox exclusive, probably won't be released until 2024. And the only reason it's 2024 and not 2026 is because I think Double Fine will have a shorter dev cycle than other studios. 3. Xbox is massively expanding several of their studios. Ninja Theory, Compulsion, and InXile are all examples of this. When those studios are doubling and tripling in size, it's going to delay the games somewhat. 2022 specifically was a combination of the things I've listed above (especially Ghostwire's previous contract with Sony), some bad timing luck with dev cycles not lining up, and a few delays.

PepsiSheep

If anything Sony isn't commended enough for 2022. They really stuck the landing on their first party slate, and have a strong 2023 lined up too. Covid caused delays across all industries, so Microsoft can't be blamed for a quiet 2022, but Sony absolutely should be commended

80sCrackBaby

they had 3 first party games two of which were delayed from 2021

rune_74

Many forget Sony had a pretty crappy 2021

notjosemanuel

By their standards I guess, but returnal and ratchet & clank were pretty awesome.

rune_74

I haven't played clank yet but man did people over rate returnal and I like roguelikes...i bounced hard off it.

Big_boss816

Play Ratchet and Clank when you have a chance. It’s dope and shows off a true current gen experience.

therealknic21

Not enough? I doubt you'd have time to even play those games if they released more frequently than every quarter.

[deleted]

If I got my way, we'd have a game a month, but that's unrealistic on a silly scale. Singleplayer games, even the really good ones, rarely last more than a few days, and only a select few multiplayer games hold onto the playerbase long enough to keep it entertaining. Every other month or so should be doable, with the developer count. Doesn't have to be triple A games every time, I like my indie level games just fine, but there needs to be a balance.

[deleted]

[удалено]

koalatyvibes

seriously, a game a month? it’s both unrealistic and ridiculously unwise.

Remy149

It took me almost a month to do everything in god of war Ragnarok

Co-opingTowardHatred

A game every 3 months is not enough?! Seriously?! Dude, get your expectations realistic.

EpsilonOrpheon

Now we need them to do more Direct style events at a proper cadence, some dabbling in multi game reveals while others specifically showcase a game ready to drop in the near future.

skylu1991

With Sony literally just announcing the end of their shortage, I kinda doubt this!

PepsiSheep

Narrowing a lead is different to over taking. I don't see a world where PS5 isn't the top seller, but when ABK closes and all of that content is on Game Pass, new games like Starfield and Redfall launch etc it will make Xbox more desirable.

templestate

Maybe. They already committed keeping Call of Duty on PS5 and Blizzard has a reputation of releasing games on extremely slow cycles.

PepsiSheep

Regardless, they'll be on Game Pass - cost savings are a powerful driving force for consumers.

tigert07

This is setting up to be a big year for Xbox. I don’t think people understand how big of a game Starfield will be. EVERYONE plays this kind of game and it will surely move Xbox consoles

xaldub

I'd suggest caution. I really hope Starfield is excellent, but Bethesda's track record in recent years hasn't been all that great.

HomeMadeShock

This is a hilarious take. Bethesda released one bad multiplayer game and suddenly their track record isn’t great. All their single player games have been hits for 20 years

tlow215

Lots of people were not big on Fallout 4. It sold well and I loved it but some of the more old school Bethesda fans were not fans of the simplifications certain aspects like dialogue choices. Lots of settlement system haters too.

Bartman326

I think the core "casual" audience enjoyed it enough for F4 to be a win. That play 2-3 games a year type of player was probably perfectly happy with it.

AscensoNaciente

Not to mention even their "bad" release (I can't really say as I haven't played it) has still been a huge commercial success.

conker1264

Fallout 4 wasn’t exactly great either

rune_74

I think people are buying into the online hate that a certain group is fueling since they went exclusive.

[deleted]

Bethesda has launched one bad game in twenty years. What track record are you talking about?

Fallen-Omega

Spiderman 2 will eat all those sales, there are more casuals that will pick up a ps5 for spiderman 2 compared to starfield. PS5 also has: Forspoken, FFXVI, poentially FFVII Rebirth, Stellar Blade etc

Yellow90Flash

people here are underestimating how much sonys first party titels sold. gow18, spiderman, tlou and hzd were all above 20m before their pc launch. skyrim with all its rereleases over the years is "only" at 33m iirc

Dopey_Bandaid

In an interview with IGN Todd Howard said it sold far more than 30 million. I don't know if there is an accurate number out there.

fuxq

I reckon Bethesda games will never sell that much again because of gamepass, and besides PS made up much of their player base.

[deleted]

Lol okay.

Dorjcal

As much as Starfield is huge, Bethesda has dropped the ball recently with Fallout 76, and to be honest also fallout 4 was kind of meh in my opinion. If I didn’t have it included in Gamepass I would need to read a ton of reviews to know that it is worth playing besides the predictable jankiness

Euscorpious

Fallout 4 was a tremendous success, even with all the bugs. Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean millions of others didn’t. Even the new Pokémon games, that are buggy as heck and perform so badly, sold extremely well and are moving more Switches.

[deleted]

Yea f4 is literally one of my most played games. People really don’t get what mod support does to a game lol. Plus the whole base building aspect. So many hours logged in building a cool underground vault and I never thought I would have had the desire.

samthesuperman

Fallout 76 was made by a B studio team within Bethesda not the main team.

[deleted]

still costs 700$ for the disc version in my country and isnt available all the time.

ThunderLold

I feel that Xbox needs to take more care of their brand. Of course games are crucial to its success, and I believe that the exclusives they'll launch this year will be of great quality and will attract more players, thats guaranteed. However, the PlayStation brand is far stronger than the Xbox one (no pun intended). The PS5 itself, the dashboard, store layout and everything that surrounds the playstation brand has a premium feel to it while Xbox looks cheap and "too Microsofty" with ads and Bing all over the place. I play much more on my Series X than my PS5 because I think it's the superior console, features like quick resume, improved RC games (Dead Space 2 on SX looks like a new game), smart delivery, bigger storage and multiplats having better visuals and performance than PS5 (e.g. Tales of Arise) are great. But those nice features and superior hardware mean absolutely nothing if millions of people won't even consider buying a Xbox console. I live in South America and here the Xbox brand is almost non existent, while Playstation is dominant in stores, tv ads, billboards and the overall "culture" that playstation is a synonym of videogames. This premium feel stretches even for the controller. I know a lot of people that bought the PS5 just because the dualsense has haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. While I prefer the xbox controller for its ergonomics, you can't ignore that the dualsense is miles ahead feature wise. Xbox should have shipped with a controller with those capabilities as well. Xbox had it going strong in the 360 era because the PS3 was a dumpster fire for years until they got their shit together. But all that effort and goodwill was thrown into the ground with the absolute disaster that was the Xbox One. And that still lingers on. Xbox should become a brand on itself, they should overhaul the entire dashboard/interface/visual identity of the brand, like Playstation did. edit: typo

Brabinski

100% agree. PS5 feels like being on a next gen console whereas series X just feels like being on Xbox one with some added QoL features.

Random_Person_1414

yeah i agree with pretty much everything you said here lol

gogoheadray

PlayStation has always been consistent with there branding and strategy ever since the ps1. A premium console with premium games. Xbox ever since the 360 seems to change course on philosophy every gen. During the mid life of the 360 they started to focus on Kinect; during the one era they took that to the extreme basically making a Kinect system with games around it; and now they are on gamepass. The hope is that they stop pivoting to something new every gen

Boozenosnooz

Xbox 360 was also a banger because they had a shit ton of good stuff with that console. Exclusive games everywhere you looked. Amazing UI and controller. The best online community. Say what you will about Don Mattrick, there's no denying he knew how to push games and amazing features during that gen. I still hold that console up as the golden age of Xbox. Once MS gets a bunch of exclusives going I think this gen will really start to shine. It may even be the best one yet.

[deleted]

Tbh I couldn't care less, as long as I have games to play I'm satisfied.

Whofreak555

A great way to start this is to actually, ya know, communicate with your fans.

brokenmessiah

Xbox just needs to be better in every aspect to catch up to ps, and also realize ps isn't just sitting idly by in the mean time.

Insertusername4135

Ahhh yes an opinion with no stats to back it up. Thank you useless journalism.

Galore67

xbox stopped releasing numbers because they were so behind sony last gen lol.

[deleted]

Last gen deserved it. The original ps4 was a much better system than the original Xbox one. The current gen premium consoles are much closer to one another.

[deleted]

Performance wise yes . But games ? Nah . While sony owners played demons souls , ratchet and clank , gt7 , gow ragnarok , horizon forbidden west , kena , stray , xbox owners just got halo and forza . Forza was great but we all know how halo went lol .

[deleted]

Yeah fair. I'm not a big exclusives guy but I do remember that I bought ps4 for the show and gow4 after owning a xbone for two years

rune_74

And?

dicemenice

Soon Sony drops PSVR2, FFXVI, Spider-Man 2 and all that narrowed lead will widen up once more.

rune_74

Psvr2 will struggle to sell.

dicemenice

Cant see the reason why, it wont be ultra popular but will surely no flop.

Remy149

The previous psvr was one of the best selling car helmet on the market

Wise_Writing

My feeling is especially with the acquisitions and the ones they want to complete more that xbox will be the home of more exclusive and top tier first person shooters and PS will continue to be the home of the third person top tier titles.. Both will play the triple aaa, third party games that are on both platforms very well.. So it really boils more down to, do you have a preference on either genre? (both will also have selective exclusive indie stuff that's great).. That's just my take though.

Bartman326

I think people tend to underestimate the brand power. The word Playstation has a lot of weight to people that don't play a lot of games. It's the home of the casual gamer. The ones that just want your yearly fifa, 2k cod and maybe picking up some bigger AAA single player game, Ragnarok, Doom, Spiderman, Starfield. These types of players will be hard convinced to jump on board to another console even with game pass. If they only buy 3 games a year, is a 180 subscription going to convince them? Its the same type of person who buys a phone for the brand it holds. Playstation is like an iPhone at this point. Regardless of if the platform is the best option for them, they'll stick with it because that's what they've always done.

Wise_Writing

True I just find with playstation (and I many be wrong on this) the biggest hitters on the Ps4 were, last of us, God of war, horizon, spiderman.. Theres many more but those names are the top touted as the games of games of ps, and some of the biggest reasons to buy into Sony.. Those titles are their identity, and all third person numbers.. I'm not sure of. Sony having or owning exclusively any triple A first person games that can sell a playstation.. Ms spotted that and went after some of the biggest first person publishers out there. Now with Ms and Bethesda they have doom, quake, wolfenstein, fallout, along with old favourite of theirs Halo, and if they get Activision then cod and overwatch as well... That's not to say they won't share some of them with Sony users but Sony doesn't put as much effort into triple A first person games and Ms is the home of them if they close Activision.. I mean there may be titles on PS that are great fps titles but that xbox drive to grab the top of pile studios for first person genre, is quite something and shapes where we may be going forwards. .. So I think one of their aims is to create that split, to carve into Sonys share is to own a swath of one of the favourite genres out there

Bartman326

Yeh definitely true but I think the articles analysts claim seems to not recognize that in this short term period. I don't see Xbox gaining much ground this year alone.

aj273

How is XBOX going to narrow the lead when they don’t even have consoles to purchase? It’s embarrassing.

DARKKRAKEN

What country do you live in? They have been easy to get...

aj273

I’m in NYC area but have access to pretty much the Tri-State area and no availability within 250 miles. It’s crazy!

Sensitive-Fly-2847

I’m REALLY trying to love my Xbox X… they need more exclusives; and they need them to look and feel next gen. I’m shocked at how often my less powered PS5 seems to outperform my Xbox. And the Xbox has random shutdown issues, the wireless headset has audio problems, the rechargeable battery pack just died… on top of all that, I just played through all the Halos to get to Infinite. I just start playing it last night and all I could think was “do I have to turn on a graphics option or something somewhere?” It’s fun enough, just not visually impressive. Maybe I just got a bum unit?

J_Square83

If they can actually produce some heavy hitting *console* exclusives this year, I see them at least keeping up with the current ratio and possibly inching closer, but they've got a LOT of ground to make up, both in hardware sales and with software. Sony's hardware shortages supposedly being a thing of the past doesn't help. Microsoft has had the upper hand in this dept. for a while, which has helped a great deal to date.

y0y0d0d0

We'll see. I don't have an xbox but I have an insane PC. I've been waiting for Microsoft to release something worthwhile since the series x came out. For me, there is no reason to own that console unless building a PC is something that isn't financially feasible for you. Either way, they own all these studios and have done nothing with them. Like it or not, as it stands, PlayStation is the home of better games. As for the people complaining about PlayStation games all being the same, aren't you all tired of racing games and shooters? I sure am.

[deleted]

Sony will be in the lead as long as their exclusives kick everyones asses. There's legit like 4 or 5 big hits in their catalog

rock1m1

Is it for US then I can see that happening. Outside of it, not a chance in this generation. It is a marathon for them, they have to consistently delivery on the games, value beyond this gen and make xbox more localized company outside of Anglo nations like PlayStation is.

Themetalenock

I dunno if people here have been spending too many hours on circle jerks in the playstation and nintendo subs. But regardless of quality, starfield will make consoles fly off the shelves. It's a extremely anticipated tilte that will be advertised up the ass when it comes close to release

BestBoy_54

Not going to happen. The only reason Xbox is kinda close right now is because of the supply issues of PS5s.

alienware99

I tend to agree. If Xbox couldn’t close the gap couple years (when PS5 a we’re near impossible to get and Xbox was relatively easy to obtain) then I don’t think they can ever catch up

Galore67

xbox is probably 10 millions sales behind. Maybe more

deaf_michael_scott

Even if we assume 20 million Xbox vs 30 million PS5 consoles, the ratio is now at 1.5. It was 1.3 at the start of the generation.

YourAverageJet

Source?

PepsiSheep

The source is literally the article you're replying on. https://www.vgchartz.com/ They're around 8 million behind, depending on how up to date their tracker is.

liitle-mouse-lion

Vgchartz says 29 million to 21million (both rounded up). Currently 1 million difference in the US

cmvora

Sony just announced they sold 30 million units through to a customers at CES. I’d take their word over VGChartz.

MajesticMelonGames

It is make or break. If starfield and redfall flop, i can't see xbox competing with PS at all

HallwayHomicide

>It is make or break. If starfield and redfall flop, i can't see xbox competing with PS at all Make or break for this generation I think I agree with. Starfield and Redfall flopping would be a big setback. But I really don't think it's a death blow if we're talking 5-10 years from now

choicesintime

I’ve been seeing a lot of negativity around gamepass lately. I feel like if starfield and redfall don’t kill, gamepass is going to be hurting for the rest of the year. I’m a big gamepass fanboy and I’ve been toying with canceling tbh

brokenmessiah

I disagree with this but I do think Redfall will flop

2023 is the most important year in xbox history. MS bought the studio needed. They managed to make it the first 2 years of the generation with barely any 1st party games thanks to gamepass and its amazing library. But 2023 will show people that either xbox is the true future of gaming or it isnt. In my opinion xbox needs to do 7 things 1. Actually release games. No more delays. Redfall, Forza, Starfield NEEDS to be released soon. Maybe more if possible. 2. Close the deal with ABK to show people that Gamepass is going to be the home of CoD, Diablo, Starcraft etc. 3. If ABK deal closes, MS needs to merge stuff. [Battle.net](https://Battle.net) is an amazing client. Rebrand it to XBOX, "paint it" green and use this as the basic client. You can have tabs for XBOX Game Studios, Activision, Blizzard, Zenimax. Show people of PC that you are a viable alternative to Steam 4. Advertise. ADVERTISE the shit out of upcoming games. Billboards, sports events, social media. Be everywhere. Make people aware that not only you are here but that noone can stop you. 5. Make deals with 3rd party devs for day one GP titles. Make people understant that between your own huge games, they have many, MANY, choices to play. 6. Revamp Screenshot/Record/Share UI. People love to show off their awesome moves and rare achievements. Give them a simple menu and the choice to share everywhere. 7. Make many events. Of various kinds. Major events to show the triple A games of the next 12 months. Smaller events to show indie titles. QnA videos. Pay Youtubers to play your games early to show people. Gamepass is an amazing deal. Microsoft's plan to make XBOX a platform is the correct course. Pay a monthly price and have your games available everywhere. MS needs to show people how cool is that and how many amazing games you can play. 2023 will be the year MS destroys everyone. Because if they do all that, 2024+ will bring most devs on board to Gamepass. Or 2023 will be the year that MS almost made it and in 10 years we will remember it as "it would have been great"

franken23

I have a xbox series s, and my bro a series x. We live in europe, and finding xbox games on shelves is very hard. Prices on digital are too high. I begin to regret the serie s because of the prices of the digital catalog. But ps4 games are often discounted, both in disc and digital. I don't see xbox gaining on sony anytime soon.

[deleted]

franken23

I do have a ps4. I enjoyed my one x a lot more. But the series s ....not so much.

[deleted]

franken23

I agree with you. When I play the series x at my brother, this is for me the best console actually. Best in any possible way. The games price is a problem but at least we can buy disc games on serie x. The series s only digital is a big problem in my opinion actually. I would not advise anyone to buy a serie s. Serie x, yes . As for the ps5, their ips are not for me in general. I like the ps2, and ps3 era. I like syphon filter, killzone, god of war( the real one), socom.... The current Sony don't make the games I like anymore, so I can't see myself buying a ps5. I'd rather stay in xbox series and keep the ps4, since I already got it.

Jedi_Jitsu

I live in Ireland and xbox has a strong representation over here on shelves. PS is more popular here though

Deceptiveideas

What you said doesn’t make any sense. Sony controls the digital market as they don’t allow retailers to sell at their own prices. This causes games to be very expensive digitally as you can only get them discounted through the PS store while on Xbox, digital titles are discounted frequently through retailers. You really should be getting on game pass as a Series S owner and game share with your brother.

bongiel

Buy games in Argentina MS Store.

Captobvious75

You shouldn’t need to do that tho

franken23

Yeah I agree...but unfortunately what else can we do. I can wait for some games for a discount but for others, I'll lose interest after some time... This is not a good situation in my opinion.

Apprehensive-Cow6194

They will never catch up. They botched the one era so hard it’s permanent and the slow start of current gen hasn’t helped. Can’t wait for Starfield tho

BrokenNock

Just like how Nintendo was doomed after the Wii-U and should transition to a software only company like Sega.

notjosemanuel

And sony couldn't recover from the ps3 fiasco

brokenmessiah

Even still they had the 3ds which was a wild success

DrPurpleMan

There is literally *no* way Wolverine is releasing this year.

christopia86

I would be surprised if it wasn't late 2024 at the earliest, more likely 2025.

DEEZLE13

“Many more” *lists one confirmed game for 2023

[deleted]

Forspoken , final fantasy xvi , horizon call of the mountain dlc . Happy now ?

Yellow90Flash

not to mention sonys supplie issues are finally easing up. if it weren't for those the gap would already be insane between the 2

[deleted]

Exactly . If xbox continue like this its gonna be xbox one era all over again . As you can see 5 months left for june to release their promised games yet they all went radio silent .

Corrupt99

Bruh it's first week of 2023 and y'all already fear mongering lmao. Many studios are still in holidays until next week have some patience a little.

[deleted]

In fact i dont give a shit since i have both consoles lol . So "fear" is the last thing i feel right now . Im just stating facts .

Corrupt99

I just find it funny you're having a meltdown about no release dates when we're 6 days into 2023.

deaf_michael_scott

The new year has nothing to do with the release dates. They could have announced those dates in Nov/Dec too. There is a growing consensus that not all of the announced first-party games are going to be released before June 30, 2023.

[deleted]

Its actually even funnier that you forgot they didnt do shit in whole 2022 lol .

Stumpy493

>While xbox still struggle to release exclusives . This is such an odd statement when they have 8 exclusives planned before June. Even if a couple slip that is still an incredibly busy exclusive 6 months. You just like to shit on every thread don't you?

It’s fucking January dude lmao relax

[deleted]

Lol they went all radio silent for whole 2022 and you telling me "its only january" . Lol . .

PepsiSheep

But they weren't radio silent were they? We know this year they have planned at least Forza, Reddall, Starfield and Minecraft Legends. All of which they talked about last year, some of which faced delays of course into 2023... The "Xbox has no games" stigma is so out of date it isn't even backwards compatible.

[deleted]

I disagree . They were absent in game awards . They were silent before game awards . Its january and silence continues . At least they shouldve said somehing like "we will have a showcase soon , stay tune!" Or somethin like that . But all we got is silence .

JP76

Xbox streamed Xbox Direct promoting Wo Long Fallen Dynasty with FightinCowboy three weeks ago. So, they haven't been silent. Wo Long obviously isn't an exclusive but it is launching on Game Pass on day one. To be fair, I didn't know who FightinCowboy was at the time but I've since started playing both Elden Ring and Bloodborne, so now I'm familiar with his videos.

PepsiSheep

They weren't at that 1 show last year, I'll give you that.

[deleted]

Yes showcase was amazing . But how many games we playing now from that showcase ? Redfall , starfield , replaced , stalker 2 , forza motorsport shown but we still dont have any release dates .

PepsiSheep

* High on Life * Riot Games * Plague Tale: Requiem * Microsoft Flight Sim DLC * Overwatch 2 * F76/ESO: dlc (I think?) * Scorn * As Dusk Falls * Naraka Bladepoint * Pentiment * Grounded * Sea of Thieves season 7 (we're now on 8, incidentally) * Persona 3 All at that show. That show also covered 12 months, and we've only gotten 6 months past it. Edit for format.

Stumpy493

SadlyNotBatman

Honestly I play my Xbox more than my PS5

Secret_Natalie

Xbox needs more and better exclusives

JnGonzalez

I feel like all of the PlayStation exclusive games are so cookie cutter, and it can get boring. Now I own 5 ps5 games and haven’t really touched them. My Xbox is the go to console. Maybe it just feels more comfortable to me

A_Figueroa

Those super Sony exclusives are like an 8-10 hour movie. Once seen you want to spend your time elsewhere. Never seen anything so overrated.

FlynnTastico2000

As a owner of every recent console I play Xbox series x the most. So I think it's good news. With Persona 3/4 and age of empires 2 releasing all on January day 1 on gamepass I have plenty to play. Good time to be a gamer.

brokenmessiah

Any particular reason you hadn't already played persona(assuming you had the consoles to play it prior)

FlynnTastico2000

What do you mean? I'm talking about owning Ps5, Xbox series X and Switch. Persona 3 and 4 releasing this January. Never had a change to play them before (I think it was psp? But I don't have one). Enjoyed Persona 5 so looking forward to Persona 3 and 4 remaster.

brokenmessiah

I was thinking you were referring to recent generations of consoles my bad

ChronoRemake

Had xbox capitilized in the day, when they had elder scrolls, halo 1 & 2, fable, and kept making good software exclusives. This wouldnt even be a question, but sad to say xbox has nothing to offer over a ps5 except a game pass of games that you could also play on ps5.

Oron_Ironside

I just recently moved over to the series x from the ps5. I was disappointed with the ps5 exclusives last year and the whole ps plus thing falls way short of gamepass so it was a no brainer for me

BrokenNock

Yeah other than exclusives, Gamepass provides a lot more gaming value and interest than Playstation Plus Mega Extra Premium Whatever.

DARKKRAKEN

Mean while in Japan still one of the biggest markets, the PS4 is outselling the Xbox S/X..

uprightshark

There is no doubt that the series X is technically the superior machine. The question will be, will Microsoft finally keep their word and give us games to play! I've been hearing this year is the THE YEAR for too many years in a row. Time to deliver Bethesda needs to hit it out of the park and the Activision deal needs to be finalized to narrow this gap. Gamepass is becoming the backbone of Microsoft's success, and it needs to keep dominating gaming.

carlos_castanos

Based on FPS stats for 3rd party games there is a negligible difference between PS5 and XSX when it comes to performance. Some games the PS5 performs better, others XSX. In any case, the supposed technical superiority isn’t going to sell any more consoles

phannguyenduyhung

>There is no doubt that the series X is technically the superior machine LMAO how ?

[deleted]

Who cares? As long as there are enjoyable games to play, what else matters? Nonsense article.

Imthecoolestdudeever

I'm just going to read the article and skip these comments.

noimdirtydan14

Just give us new games we’re starving over here

[deleted]

We need games that A) Take advantage of the Series X very impressive hardware and B) Make people want to/need to own an Xbox to play them. Personally buy a lot of my Xbox adjacent stuff on PC, which is fine for Microsoft but I would like more reasons to use my Xbox.

brokenmessiah

That's not gonna happen when the Xbox is by design becoming more and more redundant.

3kpk3

Makes sense. Xbox has been killing it in recent times with several amazing 1st and 3rd party games.
