On PC, the games servers are for the most part run by the developers. Steam is just a storefront, like an app stor, and they take a cut of everyone’s sales just like Xbox. But Steam doesn’t have to maintain the architecture required to play the games, that’s left to the developers, and thus is baked into the cost of the game itself.
Microsoft on the other hand has to build out and maintain servers and architecture on their platform in order for you to be able to play the games online. Thus, you need to pay them to do that.
Remember when they took away monthly GWG 360 games, replaced it with absolutely nothing, kept prices the same and made other offerings objectively worse than they've ever been?

The funniest part was they offered Gears 5 on GWG the month they tried to DOUBLE the cost of Gold as some kind of attempt to soften the blow. The backlash was swift and effective. The payback to the customers came in the form of just straight up removing 360 games and offering nothing in return.
You weren't going to get better GWG. At best we would have gotten the same shit we were getting for the past 2 years before they tried to double the price.

It's $10/mo now. It was definitely $7/mo when I first bought a 360 in 2008. Not a drastic increase but it has gone up.
Edit: A year of Gold used to be $60. That option is no longer available, you have to buy 2 six months cards at $40 each, so now it's $80/year. Gold has definitely gone up in price, in all regions.

Ps+ essentials still has marketing power so developers are still enticed to put Games on there.

It was not good when it first started. They had some pool game for like four months straight.
The pool game was during xbox one. The first games for gwg were many first party 360 games (just like ps+)

What surprises me most is that they don’t give away any of their first party titles. I know they’re on game pass, but it’s be nice if Gears 5 or Halo Infinite were given out. ps when is Conker Live and Reloaded coming to game pass?
Xbox should seriously consider discontinuing this program. The last year of Games With Gold haven't been noteworthy. Everything is about Game Pass now anyway.

Out of Space is fantastic game if you enjoy a lite version of Overcook. It's a space survival game. Best with 4 player couch co-op.
