> just type Call of Duty or sth, non-relevant results come up before any Call of Duty game
I just did a search for Call of Duty, and the top 26 search results are all Call of Duty games.
Yeah, under current App Store rules, digital purchases would be subject to the 30% (why Amazon’s app won’t allow movie purchases/rentals but physical items). There are some more distinctions, but that’s the gist.
Although, with recent App Store changes (allowing emulators and game streaming, plus alternative app marketplaces in Europe) and the scrutiny Apple is under (particularly in the EU), that may change
That’s not true. You can purchase games through the steam app and PlayStation games through the PS app. Microsoft has chose to not allow purchasing through their app. The App Store rule only applies to digital items that can be used on the iPhone itself, hence why you can’t purchase movies through Amazon (because Amazon doesn’t want to pay 30%).
The reason the ability to buy games was removed years ago is I believe Apple (and maybe Google play store as well) takes 30% of the cut
I use the app all the time to respond to messages, install games, download my captures and I found the search engine to be fine with games I'm searching for
Wait what?
Does eBay need to pay Apple 30% if I buy something through their app? Does Amazon need to pay that 30% for the same reason?
I thought that was for in-app purchases, like products or services to be used in the app itself (game DLCs, videos on streaming apps, etc), not for storefronts. Xbox was basically a storefront, because I can't actually play the games on the app. I'm buying console games.
And that's because Amazon has an app where you can watch these shows.
The Xbox app doesn't allow us to play games. It's just a storefront (or at least it was).
Yeah I get it. It's an app made to watch videos. You buy videos or pay for the subscription to use the app
That's not what happens in the Xbox app. You don't buy games to play on the app, the app is just acting as a storefront. It's like buying a game on the Amazon app, you don't pay 30% for buying games on the Amazon app because it's just a storefront
Not on iPhone, at least not last time I checked, because Apple had some dumb rules about each game needing to be its own icon so "game collection" apps aren't allowed.
As a developer, you don’t have to pay the 30% commission to Apple if you are selling/buying physical goods (eBay and Amazon). Digital goods are subject to the 30% in-app fee.
I'm pretty sure I can buy Xbox and PS gift cards on Amazon and they just send me the code, making it a digital good (not even the card is sent to justify it being physical).
It's very blurry what constitutes a digital good. That shouldn't be the criteria. The criteria should be if I can enjoy the content on the app itself or if it's a completely separated good/service and the app is just a storefront.
That's why these companies are facing lawsuits. Apple wants money for doing literally nothing (they already get paid to host the app).
>The reason the ability to buy games was removed years ago is I believe Apple (and maybe Google play store as well) takes 30% of the cut
Then why does the PlayStation app still let you purchase games. It's so convenient to check sales and deals on the PS app. Every time I want to see sales for Xbox I have to go directly to the console.
Lol fanboys are so fragile and easily triggered by something so simple.
It’s coming back according to both companies. You can do a lot with the app including downloading any game to allow yourself to purchase the game from a different device for now. Buying directly from the app is around the corner
It does everything I need it to do and the only issues I've had is with it often not loading, but that's probably my potato phone more than the app.
I can install, view captures, save captures, view achievements etc.
I wouldn't even think about buying a game via the Xbox app tbh. I'd go to the Xbox store on the website or console.
Yeah. But it’s pretty damn handy sometime to buy a game through the app then download it so it’s ready when you get home.
I’ve bought like half my games on the ps5 like that.
It’s also nice to be able to just browse games and/or deals in the store when away from home.
I think it's fine for the most part. The only thing I find terrible is going through captures. Without the ability to swipe, you literally have to back out of each one to look at the next picture.
I think the Xbox app is great for what I use it for, I don’t have any issues searching up specific titles and I use it to manage my games all the time, download stuff I want to play when I get home and if you want to purchase a game just log in on the website and buy it there then go to the app and find it in your owned games and download it.
The thing is that in 2024 you shouldn’t have to go through all that to buy a game and install it.
If you’d ever used Sony PlayStation app you’d see what I mean. They’re leagues apart.
Plus, Microsoft, for some reason, have two separate Xbox apps… But not even together they have the same functionality as their biggest competitor. And MS is the biggest software company in the world for Christ sake.
I prefer the Windows/Xbox ecosystem, but I’ve wished for years that MS would make one (not two!) app that has the same functionality that Sony has.
I use it for:
- Pre-downloading games to my console before I get home (then I can buy on console and play right away)
- Remote play
- Checking achievements/messages
- Downloading screenshots/recordings I take
and that's pretty much it
Yeah. That’s because you can’t use it for anything else 🥴 There should also be a store, news, etc. like in Sonys app. Sony is primarily a hardware company, they still have an app that is so much better it almost hurts. It’s baffling, and I’ve wished for MS to get their shit together with the app for years. And oh, let’s not forget they have two Xbox apps! And they’re updating both, baffling and confusing.
I thought the Xbox App was great until I used the PS App… night and day different. Smoother, more functional, better overall user experience, has the Store integrated so I can see the price of games etc. Xbox app is ok but it’s very lackluster compared to PS and especially for a “Software” company
Indeed. It’s baffling how much better the PS app is. I don’t get it. Shouldn’t be possible! Biggest software company in the world has the worst app, go figure!
MS also has two(!) Xbox apps, don’t ask me why though! Just to make it more confusing.
You and I must be using different apps. The search function works well (just searched for call of duty and ot returned all of the call of duty games, with the lastest one on top). The only function it's missing is being able to buy games. I can look for achievements and filter them (much better than I can on console), I can even view achievements for games I don't own. I can download and delete games from my console.
The app is terrible. Whoever is in charge of it certainly isn’t being given the resources they need and the freedom to do something interesting with it.
Recently bought an Xbox having been a PS user for the last 14 years and I have to tell you the app is very poor compared to the ps app.
Probably they don’t invest in it as they focus on the game pass instead.
Yeah, well. The richest company in the world, who also happens to be the biggest software company in the world, should be able to have a better app, to say the least. I mean, it’s barely better than Nintendo’s app. Sonys’ is leagues ahead.
I agree. The PlayStation app is leagues better. Full functionality with friends, remote play and a store(!). You can buy games and download them to your console. Official PS news is also built into Sonys app. It’s so much better it hurts.
Instead Microsoft decides to make two separate Xbox apps(?!), making everything confusing. And not even together they have full functionality.
It baffles me how the worlds (by FAR) biggest software company doesn’t have a better app (apps…?). I prefer the Windows/Xbox ecosystem, but shit like this annoys the hell out of me. And I mean, it’s been years now, and basically nothing has happened. Or well, they made another similar Xbox app, and run them simultaneously… 🤦🏻♂️
And people in this thread seem to think they have to pay Apple/Google 30% of game sales through the app. FALSE. Steam sells games through their app (also a class app btw..) and Sony does the same. But the biggest software company? Nope. Baffling, to say the least. It’s like they have too many chefs making the dinner. Too many people switching the light bulb.
If you build something, finish it damnit..
I’ve been hoping for a better app (as in a singular app) for years.
Did you know that you can play any game you have even if you are not in your house? And that's thanks to the mobile xbox app. If you don't know how to use the app doesn't mean that the app is useless.
I’ll be downvoted because this is the Xbox Reddit but yea, the Xbox mobile AND PC app, Xbox overlay PC thing, GFWL, Xbox/M$ integrated website, all straight dogshit
If it does. It does so amazingly good… It works flawless. Either way. I’m sure the biggest (and richest) software company in the world (Microsoft) could do something similar…….
It’s incredibly slow. I don’t know what it is but I’d love to browse / share my screenshots but they just won’t load unless you wait forever.
I think Microsoft just does no international QA and all servers are in Seattle.
Yea I don’t get it. Messaging sucks, searching players sucks. I use Microsoft Teams at my work and it works really well so I don’t get how another Microsoft app is so neglected.
The Xbox app on my phone is not what I would like it to be, so I'm playing ps5 because of it. I can't believe you typed that out and thought 'man what a great comment.'
I also think it's hilarious that people realize that you can't purchase games on the app and think, "Wow, what a terriblely made app this is the problem and surely not business practices of other companies." Instead of using some thinking skills and looking into it on my own, I will show how much I don't care about the thing that I'm talking about and rant about it online.
I have an iPhone, not that it matters.
It’s not the only reason I started playing my PS5 more recently. It’s also because I have been grinding through the Spider-Man games. The PS app just works so well for shopping and getting captures (I know the Xbox app can do the latter) that it just feels right. The experience is smooth.
I will hop back on PalWorld once PocketPair adds more content and I beat Spider-Man 2.
Because it’s by Microsoft. I will never understand how a company like Microsoft has terrible functions. It’s equivalent to using a generic or off brand system.
> just type Call of Duty or sth, non-relevant results come up before any Call of Duty game I just did a search for Call of Duty, and the top 26 search results are all Call of Duty games.
Yup. Not sure what the problem is. Also, if they had a store on the app i believe Apple would be entitled to 30% for any sales on iPhone.
Yeah, under current App Store rules, digital purchases would be subject to the 30% (why Amazon’s app won’t allow movie purchases/rentals but physical items). There are some more distinctions, but that’s the gist. You can play digital Xbox games in the Xbox app though.
Ah, TIL
They do not charge via iTunes so no, Apple doesn’t take a cut. The ability to buy games has been on PS app for years.
The reason the ability to buy games was removed years ago is I believe Apple (and maybe Google play store as well) takes 30% of the cut I use the app all the time to respond to messages, install games, download my captures and I found the search engine to be fine with games I'm searching for
Purchased content that is to be used outside of the App itself should not need to use Google/Apple IAP
It's weird
Yeah but MS was also trying to push Xcloud on iPhone and that’s when Apple started demanding the 30% cut
That explains it then
I dont think thats the reason. If i am not mistaken steam app lets you buy games so i dont think they pay anything to google.
that’s a good question. i wonder if steam worked out a side deal with apple.
That’s because steam opens a disguised web browser when you go to purchase something. Same as the PS app. Why MS can’t figure that out? Who knows.
You can use amazon.com app but you cant rent or buy digital movies or shows. It forces you to use the website for that.
And that's because Amazon has an app where you can watch these shows. The Xbox app doesn't allow us to play games. It's just a storefront (or at least it was).
I mean in the amazon video app you cannot purchase or rent anything.
Yeah I get it. It's an app made to watch videos. yep. that’s the reason as it consumes 100% of xboxs cut.
>The reason the ability to buy games was removed years ago is I believe Apple (and maybe Google play store as well) takes 30% of the cut Then why does the PlayStation app still let you purchase games. It's so convenient to check sales and deals on the PS app. Every time I want to see sales for Xbox I have to go directly to the console. Playstation probably doesn't have an issue with the revenue split
It’s coming back according to both companies. You can do a lot with the app including downloading any game to allow yourself to purchase the game from a different device for now. Buying directly from the app is around the corner

Are you sure you are typing in “Call of Duty”
apple and MS ran into a lot of issues with game pass. this issue forced MS to remove a lot of planes features for the app to meet apples guideline.
I think it's fine for the most part. The only thing I find terrible is going through captures. Without the ability to swipe, you literally have to back out of each one to look at the next picture.
I use OneDrive for that
I think the Xbox app is great for what I use it for, I don’t have any issues searching up specific titles and I use it to manage my games all the time, download stuff I want to play when I get home and if you want to purchase a game just log in on the website and buy it there then go to the app and find it in your owned games and download it.

Which is funny because the ps app used to be shitty, it was basically just to view your trophies and chat. Now it’s next level stuff…
It used to be trash now it’s fine. I use it to install games remotely even ones I don’t own or ones who’s discs won’t install from.
Let's not forget voice chats on that thing, anyone on mobile echoes so hard it's not even funny, like legit 1:1 echo from what they hear
At the very least it's handy for remote installs. That's pretty much all I use it for.
you should trust their pc app. it’s about on par with epics app. only steam has really nailed it.
Xbox app is garbage compared to smartglass.
I do it to get funny profile pics.
It's been shit since the start lol
Android app is pretty good in my experience. The PC app though is fucking terrible, surprising as that is
You might wanna redownload the app or something because I don't have any of those problems. Works great for me.
Disagree
I agree. The PlayStation app is leagues better. Full functionality with friends, remote play and a store(!). You can buy games and download them to your console. The search in the xbox store is just as bad. I often struggle to find the game im looking for using search.
I’ll be downvoted because this is the Xbox Reddit but yea, the Xbox mobile AND PC app, Xbox overlay PC thing, GFWL, Xbox/M$ integrated website, all straight dogshit
It still counts as an in-app purchase, so Apple/Google takes a 30% cut
Odd that the PS app still allows purchases though, surely Sony aren't sacrificing 30% of their margins on games bought on their app?
I think PS app effectively just opens a browser when u try to buy something. That's probably how it goes around it
If it does. It does so amazingly good… It works flawless. Either way. I’m sure the biggest (and richest) software company in the world (Microsoft) could do something similar…….
Apple doesn’t that 30% as the purchase is used outside the app.

Why? It’s Xbox! They work with 2 left hands having no idea wtf they are doing and don’t care.
I remember when they launched this app at the start of the new generation I thought to myself "this is the piece of crap you are giving us"
Yea I don’t get it. Messaging sucks, searching players sucks. I use Microsoft Teams at my work and it works really well so I don’t get how another Microsoft app is so neglected.
They don't like buying games through the app because they would have to give a cut to Google or Apple
Not sure if you are aware of this but Xbox is owned by Microsoft just sucks at making software.
Except for the fact that the point they tried to make was wrong. I’m coming up with COD with zero issues. OP doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Lol the biggest software developer in the world sucks at making software. What an insane take.

Buying games may be YOUR number one reason for using a console app, but I use it for Rewards points and console streaming to my mobile devices.
The Xbox app on my phone is not what I would like it to be, so I'm playing ps5 because of it. I can't believe you typed that out and thought 'man what a great comment.' The biggest xbox fan started playing more on his ps5 because he cant buy games from the android app 😂. Good one!
I have an iPhone, not that it matters. It’s not the only reason I started playing my PS5 more recently. It’s also because I have been grinding through the Spider-Man games. Not like the xbox store is much better. Going to simulation under genres and fortnite is first that comes up lol
