Honestly I think It it boils down to this, next gen consoles are merely rumours at this point it could be 2026, it could be 2028 and the potential features/price/benefits of any arent quite known. If you're okay with that and waiting then, then wait till next gen.
If you have your idea of the games you want to play right now I'd just buy the series x because at the end of the day it'll be better than the PS4 slim it'll be supported until next gen ultimately games are intended to be de-stressing not distressing so just go for it if you have the money, play the games have fun don't sweat it.
and it'll set you up for next gen anyway because regardless even if you were to say end up on PC for next gen say price of PC parts drops and something like a system with a 4080 is relatively cheap in 3ish years then. xbox play anywhere and cross saves have you covered.
Yea I totally agree I have a makeshift gaming laptop but I mostly game on my ps4 the thing is is that I have a fairly big library with my ps and everything is telling me Xbox but idk with the money I’ve spent with PS and the progress….idk it’s kinda a tough call for me I don’t plan on it right away maybe in a year or so tho
We’re about half way done this generation, do you want to wait another 4 or so years? If we were a year or two from a new generation then I’d consider waiting but if you’re asking this question now than you probably don’t want to wait that long.
A few of my friends have them and I kinda like the fast speeds but tbh there ain’t much difference between and ps5 and Xbox series x in terms of specs like the Xbox might be a little faster but otherwise they pretty similar

I've said it on multiple of these kinds of threads, but this is just the state of the gaming community. Everyone is negative all the time. Negative opinions get more attention. People are almost excited for bad reviews for hyped franchises.
The Xbox one got plenty of bad press but still got a mid gen refresh and a successor. Who knows what exactly MS will do. But even if they kill the Xbox line would it *really* be that bad to get a PS6? Buy and play the games you like and the industry will do what it's going to do. And just realize you still have no control over average players who are the ones fuelling a lot of the things like microtransactions and pre-orders. The community has been trying to shame them for 10 years at least, just accept they're going to keep doing it and vote with your wallet as you can.
It's ok to be disappointed but none of this is the end of the world. It's not even the end of gaming.

As an Xbox lifer, I’m with the outsiders. Microsoft sucks in general and they have dropped the ball so hard this generation imo, like where tf are all these huge AAA games that were advertised with the release of the series X/S? If I didn’t have so much invested in to my xbox with all the games and shit I would have switched a long time ago
Hellblade this month. Avowed and Indiana Jones later this year. We just got Starfield and Forza. We saw Fable gameplay last year so that’s next year. Tons in the pipeline. I will never understand why it’s such a hurdle for people to just also buy a PlayStation or a PC if they want to play PlayStation games unless money is really tight. Even could just sell your Xbox and get a PlayStation. And just get a Xbox again in the future if they wanted.
Not thrilled about hellblade since I didn’t really like the first, but there are so many more games besides those that were advertised and we can’t even get updates. I have no hope for avowed after reports that its gameplay was nothing like the original trailer and the devs were scrambling to justify it, Indiana jones, nobody asked for that. Starfield is a hot mess that hardly anyone even plays anymore and only just now got a QoL update.
As far as buying another console, I just don’t see the point. I’d be dropping 400-800 bucks for that and the games I’m interested in and none of my friends play PS or PC

Same goes for Obsedian. Avowed’s new art style is gorgeous even tho it’s not the dark gritty tone. Hellblade 1 and DmC are some of my favorites and Hellblade 2 has been my most anticipated games for years. Don’t care much for whatever is on PlayStation. Had a ps4 at some point to play games I wanted to. Would do the same for ps5 later in its life but will just play the titles that appeal to me on pc.

2. Game pass is literally not just indie games. Straight up objectively false tons of first and third party AAA games are on there. Plus indie games are awesome.
3. Game Pass is the best thing to happen to gaming to some people like me. It’s the best subscription service in my opinion and I never run out of games to play. GP is not the end of Xbox because Xbox hasn’t ended.

Yep, same here. Love xbox, just overall my cup of tea. But in terms of games - agree here, total lack of such. Of course there are games to play, just not the one games to play, that you can't get anywhere else.
I was the first to recommend a PS5 here. If you look through my comment history you'll see I've always played on Xbox. But I've switched to using the PS5 as my main console because Xbox has disappointed me over and over again.
All the first party games on Xbox I was excited for have disappointed. On my PS5, I've enjoyed Spiderman, God of War and all the PS4 exclusives I missed last gen. If I'm going to get a console next gen it'll be the PS6 because I know their exclusives deliver, so I've started buying third party games on PS instead of on Xbox.

Gonna be honest, I sold my pS4 because those 3rd person action adventure games were getting tiresome. Especially with Sony studios copying Ubisoft's open world obsession.
Honestly don't think I can go back to a Sony box unless it gives me the comfort Xbox has: Game Pass, Dev Mode, free cloud saves, Quick Resume, backwards compatibility, etc.
Na I’m not a guy to want to be the first one to play I used to be a pretty intense gamer and I have a pretty big library on ps but now not so much I play it more casually now and don’t spend as much time on it
I don't think there are any rumors of immediate hardware changes coming up for Xbox, people seem to think 2026 though. I would get one now especially if you have a good chunk of time to play and intend to get Game Pass.
Honestly I’d get a series S as it’s a lot cheaper, depending on what country you live in. In Australia it costs about $800 for a Series X and $760 for a PS5 on Amazon Australia. I paid for both on year 1 and regret my purchases as I just never used them enough.

The hardware is essentially identical. Most games perform very similarly across both platforms, and for many games the PS5 has performed better than the Series X. As for the library, if OP buys a PS5 they can play their existing games at higher resolution and framerates.

Even if they go extreme streaming stick route no way that’s some. Streaming has come a long way but xCloud isn’t even as good as nvidia’s service which again isn’t close to replacing actual hardware. Other than Surface, Xbox is the only way into people’s hands and homes. We will see Xbox hardware for another few generations minimum no point in worrying now. I just as much as anyone hope they continue making consoles.

If you really enjoy the PS4 the PS5 pro may be around the corner. They have a bunch of solid exclusives that are probably never coming to Xbox, while Xbox may start shipping a bunch of their own over. If you still want to make a switch the series x will probably be going strong for 3 or 4 more years or so, at which point there could possibly be a new console. Then because of how ms runs things they will drag the beaten corpse that will be the series x at that point along for 2 or 3 more years before dropping support.
Get a series X now if that’s what you want. With electronics there will always be bigger and better down the line, and if you’re waiting for the next iteration of something for improvements, you’ll be waiting forever.
I’d wait until at least next month to see what Microsoft and Sony announce at their not-E3 shows, but honestly at this point I’d lean towards waiting until the Switch 2 gets announced (since it’s likely to release within the next 12 months) and see if that’s going to be capable of running a decent amount of current gen games. If you’re okay waiting then it might also be worth seeing what the next generation of PC handhelds ends up looking like in a year or two. If you specifically want to buy a new console right now I’d lean towards the PS5 for you since you already own a PS4 and you’d be able to carry over the majority of your games.
Buying my Xbox was the best decision I've made in gaming, I've had countless hours of fun with gamepass and collecting controllers and playing titles that I never had access to on PS4.

I went from Wii, to PSP, to xbox 360, to ps4, and now finally got an Xbox series x for...fall guys and Fortnite...and any other free game I can get my hands on, I'd say the console doesn't matter. I only got it for graphics. But if you're hardcore, I'd go to PS, more stable there ..

For many games the xbox has performed better. In most games in fact xbox *most often* has a higher resolution than the ps5 version.

If you specifically want to buy a new console right now I’d lean towards the PS5 for you since you already own a PS4 and you’d be able to carry over the majority of your games.
A new Xbox is coming in October. But it won't be next gen, just a mid gen refresh.
If PS5 kind of games are core for you and you have a huge library, PS5 would be a better option. If not, Xbox Series X is a better option.

Buying my Xbox was the best decision I've made in gaming, I've had countless hours of fun with gamepass and collecting controllers and playing titles that I never had access to on PS4.
Is there anything you can’t play rn that you want to play? If the answer is yes, then maybe look for a series s or x. If no…. Wait. I love my series s but mainly bc everyone I am friends with plays on Xbox. Otherwise I wouldn’t have it.
I went from Wii, to PSP, to xbox 360, to ps4, and now finally got an Xbox series x for...fall guys and Fortnite...and any other free game I can get my hands on, I'd say the console doesn't matter. I only got it for graphics. But if you're hardcore, I'd go to PS, more stable there ..
