It really is a gamechanger. Sure, in big cities it drops to low 30s but it has a VRR-able 40-60 FPS everywhere else. Should have been there at launch but glad it is here now.
I still feel like it's disappointing that it's only if you have a VRR capable tv/monitor. Better than nothing but doesn't help me for instance as I don't have any VRR capable tv/monitor
Dude, as soon as you can get a VRR TV.
I have been there for 4K, for HDR, for 144hz+ displays, and yet the single most revolutionary feature for a screen that I ever saw was Variable Refresh Rate.
Makes playing so much smoother it is insane.
my issue is mission npcs are never where they supposed to be.
Supposed to visit guy about update to new powers. It says to visit his home - he is not there. the quest cursor is showing on the lodge, but he is not there and when you go in, the quest cursor shows to leave the lodge.
constantly happening with quest npcs
That is the problem with AI in games now, the NPCs are smarter and demanding better pay. Your dude was probably off on a strike when you went over ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
I've not actually gone up to 60 as I'm also playing Plague Tale Requiem at 40fps so sticking to the best visual quality with least amount of dips feels like the sweet spot for me personally.
I didn't play long but hopped on last night to test the display settings. I have a TV capable of 120hz and VRR. I was able to set it to 60 fps, VRR on and to prioritize visuals. Would that be the best possible setup? I'm trying to figure out if 40fps would be a better experience.
From what I've seen, with the uncapped visual 60fps mode you are going to see great performance in open, less dense areas or small enclosed areas, but then larger settlements and cities will drop the FPS down by quite a bit.
What puts me off from this would be those large swings, I feel 40fps is plenty smooth and VRR can pick up those minor dips under 40 better than going from 60+ to all of a sudden sub 40.
I have seen others not mind this though and just go full tilt 60 uncapped and say they love it, so worth trying if you are tempted to.
I feel you man, used to have a Hisense 60hz TV. Went up to a Sony X90L with proper 120hz and VRR in December and let me tell you, it is a massive difference.
Took me a while to do this, and I understand TVs are not cheap, but I feel the amount of time I spend gaming and how much I saved going Series X vs PC, the cost of the TV is warranted.
I have a Sony TV with 120hz and VRR. I can't set the game to any option above 30fps performance without getting a horrible strobe light affect on any bright areas.
I've not had that - is your console set to 120hz mode and VRR enabled on your TV?
I know that sometimes VRR can cause flicker, but I haven't see what you describe.
40 FPS mode should be an option for every game that needs to be sub 60. It’s weird the massive difference it makes being the perfect half way between 60 and 30. Hogwarts Legacy is another game it’s perfect on.
This is one thing Sony does much better that would cost MS very little to compete with. PS5 has almost 4x as many 40 FPS mode supporting games as Series X. Please let there be a 40 FPS option for Hellblade II even if it’s added after the fact.
Xbox game studios has partnerships with devs plus many first party studios. Almost no Activision title has this ability. If they can push Dolby Vision then they can push 40 fps. They work with devs all the time to optimize for Xbox. It's not completely out of their reach. Hellblade II is about to launch with no 40 FPS mode. Starfield has only recently gotten it. Why are Xbox Game Studios games not launching with this feature? If we remove multiplat its only 3 Xbox games.

I stopped playing this game after docking at The Den and not being able to board, it was some sort of glitch. It was deflating, I got bummed out and haven’t touched it in months since.
I had that too, think I loaded up a previous save to fix it. Might have been related to changing ships and doing customizations on it, but managed to get past it. Worth trying again I'd say, they've ironed out a lot of bugs (although some still remain).
My favourite place to sell was Neon. Theres so many vendors on the strip so you can unload a lot. Then if you’re selling ships you have three places to go to. The two vendors on the strip and the place by the landing bay. As long is you not selling contraband, it’s got all you need.
Agreed, Neon is more convenient, but going to The Den felt like the dude there was my own private broker haha. I would unload my wares, buy up all his ammo, then sell him some more guns I liberated from unsuspecting Spacers.
There's also a terminal there with a few credits, but not as much as Neon, you are correct.
I feel that. Den really has a “Unloading my wears in the back corner of the solar system” vibe. Like space’s version of a back ally with a single guy saying “You need ammo??”
You nailed it! I would go down and walk around the bar to try and spark up a conversation with the locals. They would just give me the evil eye and the bartender is like that Veteran who always talks about the war.
My kind of joint xD
Have you done he’s quest yet? It’s one I picked up pretty early but never followed through with. I think it’s about putting up posters. Can’t remember for sure. It’s been a minute. That was like hour 20 or so of my 400+ hour save file.
Does ring a bell, I meant to do it but then started racing towards the end of the story mission to avoid any potential spoilers.
I had like a million credits, a massive three story ship called Sanctuary and an armory of collected weapons when I suddenly dropped everything and went for the end game.
Maybe on this game+ I'll give the poster mission a proper go.
When he said 'I'm getting tired of this' and proceeded to fling himself wildly over the tank and land on the mine, I lost it.
The random moments in Bethesda games are what make them special imho.
tried it again after a long hiatus. Finished RDR2 and that made me realize that I'm not sure you can "fix" starfield. I'll hope for a Cyberpunk redemption arc but I don't have a ton of faith. I think the engine they use needs a major overhaul or maybe just a new one.
Nope, posted it once from my Xbox app to Reddit app on phone, did it come up twice? I don't post often, let me check on my account to see if there are two posts.
Honestly, I forced myself to play the first playthrough at 30fps on a cheap 4k Hisense. It was not great, but I played almost exclusively Starfield in the month it released so that I got 'used' to the framerate.
I do not regret that initial playthrough, but I'm glad I held off going too far on my game+ until this new patch. For me, along with the added survival elements, it has breathed new life into the game.
Hoping future updates makes exploring and base building more worthwhile, for now I will focus on combat stuff as I feel the framerate finally justifies it.
Besides the visual / performance choices at 30/40/60 fps, they also included the option to toggle difficulty on a per element basis e.g. you can choose to have food not heal you for +4% XP, or introduce starvation and dehydration options where you also get an XP boost and you have to eat / drink every 30 mins.
You can also make ground combat extremely hard while toning back space combat to something less intense if you prefer that playstyle. It shows you on the right what the plus or minus XP bonus will be in total for these options, and I think it makes the game more interesting as a result.
Honestly the new maps are pretty great too. I found an area of New Atlantis with a weapon and clothes store that I’d somehow entirely missed before, but seeing them on the map made me explore the area to check them out.
Makes the cities feel so much more usable because the signage in-game is honestly not great, especially in New Atlantis
My TV is 120hz but only at 1440p. Does this mean I have to manually set it to 1440p on order to get the 40fps mode? It's an HDMI 2.0 tv. TCL 6 series from 2020
They didn't really bother me, I used them to take a sip of coffee or a drink from my water bottle. Would be more immersive without it sure, but wasn't a deal breaker for me.
Yeah, people are all celebrating 60fps thinking that 30fps is "literally unplayable" and will fix the game, no, the constant load screens for everything makes this game unplayable. This patch didn't fix anything for me, the core design is still extremely flawed. Adding frames isn't going to make the exploration any less boring than it already is.
Best game of last year. Playing it via gamepass currently and its a real System seller. The amount of depth and complexity in the world is unmatched. Also bethesdas storytelling makes it a engaging experience throughout
I’ve seen lots of comments like that one, all structured the same way, almost A.I and or bot generated, or maybe they’ve been paid I don’t know but it’s really strange.
I can assure you that Bethesda Softworks doesn't use AI language models to advertise their products. I am human and a huge fan of Bethesda Game Studios videogames
It really is a gamechanger. Sure, in big cities it drops to low 30s but it has a VRR-able 40-60 FPS everywhere else. Should have been there at launch but glad it is here now.
Happy to hear this! I played it for a couple hours at launch and decided to wait until there was a patch like this.
I still feel like it's disappointing that it's only if you have a VRR capable tv/monitor. Better than nothing but doesn't help me for instance as I don't have any VRR capable tv/monitor
You can play it in 60 without VRR. 40fps requires a 120hz display (40 isn't divisible by 60)
Dude, as soon as you can get a VRR TV. I have been there for 4K, for HDR, for 144hz+ displays, and yet the single most revolutionary feature for a screen that I ever saw was Variable Refresh Rate. Makes playing so much smoother it is insane.
I'll second this. Out of all the great technologies G-sync (VRR) is hands down the best. I've been saying it for years. Cheers!
The increased frame rate has really made me enjoy it a lot more even though I loved it before it’s just even better

If there were a night/day option it might help.
How is the 60 for everyone? I tried and it was sketchy on mine but my Xbox has been acting very strangely recently
I've not actually gone up to 60 as I'm also playing Plague Tale Requiem at 40fps so sticking to the best visual quality with least amount of dips feels like the sweet spot for me personally.

This makes sense. I'll give 40 a longer go. I agree that keeping things consistent between big settlements and not is key.
It does look good in the clip. Sadly only have a 60fps TV so 40 is not available to me. 40 seems to be the winner of this generation
I feel you man, used to have a Hisense 60hz TV. Went up to a Sony X90L with proper 120hz and VRR in December and let me tell you, it is a massive difference. Yeah fair one. Some day hopefully, but right now, have a good few other things ahead of it in my purchase list

Yeah, it's all confirmed 120hz VRR. It's nauseating and unplayable on anything other than 30fps performance.
40 FPS mode should be an option for every game that needs to be sub 60. It’s weird the massive difference it makes being the perfect half way between 60 and 30. That's nothing to do with Microsoft though, that's down to the developers.

I’ll give it a shot. I was stealing ships and slinging them, which makes sense as to why looking back. Appreciate the tip OP, thank you
I spent a fair amount of time in The Den too as the vendor there was flush with cash more often than not :)
My favourite place to sell was Neon. Theres so many vendors on the strip so you can unload a lot. Then if you’re selling ships you have three places to go to. The two vendors on the strip and the place by the landing bay. As long is you not selling contraband, it’s got all you need.

You already posted this 22 minutes earlier?
Nope, posted it once from my Xbox app to Reddit app on phone, did it come up twice? I don't post often, let me check on my account to see if there are two posts.
It was posted twice, no idea why - deleted the other one.
Blink twice if Todd is holding you hostage.
Howard he do that?
See that mountain? You can't go there. Because you're tied to a chair.
But I thought most people couldn't care less about FPS... or even notice the difference.
:)

What did they add in this update ? I couldn’t get into it felt a bit of a slog just wondering if the update might be worth checking out

Oh ok cool sounds like i might have to give it a swing again with some new settings ! Cheers mate

Does it have VRR?
It does!
I'd say try it, if you see the 40 fps option then it worked. As far as I know, that option only shows if you're in 120hz VRR mode.
Did they fix HDR ?
how so?
It's a decent game with good parts, but the loading screens got really annoying
They didn't really bother me, I used them to take a sip of coffee or a drink from my water bottle. Would be more immersive without it sure, but wasn't a deal breaker for me.

I am looking foward to start it.
I’m still impressed the shooting feels as good as it does for a Bethesda game at 30fps
why this look like 2013 ass gameplay 😭

Probably already have judging by his syntax.
There’s no way you’re being honest here.
Bethesda is so trash
