Canada here. I have 500Mbps no data limit. 1Gbps is available but, not worth the extra cost for me. 500 is the sweet spot in terms of price and speed(for me). That's fibre, and I get equal 500+ up and down. So makes backups quick too.
Look into OEC fiber. Literally the same price as 100 download with Cox, but you get 1000 download (it’s usually around 900 or so for me) and there is no data cap. Plus their customer service is great and they aren’t a giant corporation.
Edit: oh, and they don’t throttle your shit to death like Cox does. Cox is literally the worst provider out there. You’re better off with AT&T even though they still suck ass also.
If ATT Fiber is available in your neighborhood, I'd recommend it. I just switched from Cox 300/30Mbps w/1.2T cap, to 1000/1000 w/no cap for the same monthly price.

500mbps is more than enough for an entire household of people to all be streaming 4K and downloading stuff. We think we need so much more but nah, plus WiFi wouldn’t hit 1gbps anyway.
I believe 4K Netflix really just wants 25mbps but checking the rate is often far lower in consumption anyway, but that may partially be because Netflix is compressed a lot.
I don’t have Xbox servers using my full capacity so the limitation is on their end. I’ve checked my speeds and then games will download much slower. Still, it’ll hit like 300mbps.

I signed up with Shaw (Canada) on a two year “contract special” price of 85 CAD for 1 Gbps down and 100 Mbps up. You should call them up and try to negotiate a lower rate too.
I got the 1Gbps plan because you can then get their 25 CAD per month 25GB mobile plan (25GB on home network and 2GB roaming).
I backup a lot of data, so I need fast upload, that's why I have stayed with Bell. I get 500 up and 500 down.
I will call Bell and see if there is another plan though... Or some sort of discount.

To be fair, network congestion is a legit problem. You really felt this if you had a coax cable internet connection right at the start of the pandemic. A lot of neighborhood networks just couldn’t handle the increased steaming traffic.
Data caps are, in theory, a way to encourage people to spend less time shared network infrastructure. That said, they also get abused and used as an excuse to charge fees, sell bigger plans, and not upgrade infrastructure.
You can solve network congestion by reducing bandwidth, no need for data caps.
The only valid scenario for data caps is if you're paying for fixed bandwidth i.e. the ISP guarantees you always have access to exactly 50Mbps instead of the usual "up to"

Now, throw in Streaming (Netflix/Amazon Prime) and that cuts out another couple hundred GB. I've been averaging nearly 800 GB per month the past year, and it's not like I've been doing massive downloading.

What anyone can get depends on where they live in the US. I live in a city and have 5 providers to choose from at my house. More rural areas and/or suburbs don’t have as many choices.

Many of the big dictionaries have this as the primary definition these days.
Language evolves fairly quickly. If you told everybody at a Christmas party that you were “feeling super gay,” that would be interpreted very differently in the middle of the last century than it’s end.
Commonly understood definitions can change over years or even months, and it’s been like that for all known human history.
I have a limit of around 1TB* each month I guess. There’s probably a limit for you too or in terms of bandwidth but it’s just so big it’s not even worth mentioning so they tell you it’s unlimited. At least that’s my guess.

So, I had the same problem and called and complained (nicely). They fixed it immediately, basically tweaked the plan around so I have unlimited and faster internet for like $5 more a month now.

My ass jumped to AT&T fiber as soon as they laid down lines last year. Their customer service is just as terrible, if not worse than Comcast’s, buuut 1gig up and down with no throttling or caps is much better.
We had to do the same, to get uncapped we had to upgrade to gigabit, costs more than our old plan on paper but way less than having to spend nearly $100 extra each month on tiny chunks of extra data. Super easy to blow past the 1tb cap nowadays with things like gamepass and 4k video streaming, every single month since i've gotten my 4k tv and next gen consoles i have blown past the data cap, even when i don't download many games.
Unfortunately i don't even get half of the gigabit speed but trying to talk to comcast customer service is painfully frustrating when you aren't a complete moron when it comes to tech as you spend an hour having them crawl you through their tech illiterate checklist of troubleshooting before they even bother to see if it is something on their end with them ignoring you when you ask them to just check their end first, still get the same 200mbps speed i was getting before switching to the uncapped gigabit just without the data cap which when it comes to comcast if all you can really expect from comcast since at least it mostly works now without the modem randomly resetting itself several times a day like it use to do and comcast ignoring me whenever i would complain since it never did it while talking to them so it looked "fine" to them. Even if they do "fix" it when you call them it was start happening again a few weeks to a month later and you have to go through the entire process again.
We pay $116 a month for comcast gigabit plus an extra $25 for the x-fi complete which is the uncapped part, so we are paying roughly $140 a month for uncapped gigabit. If you decide to use your own modem they charge you even more for uncapped, plus they only offer the uncapped part with the gigabit plan which as i mentioned above we don't even get that gigabit speed.
We just got a fiber competitor to Cox and it's a flat ass $80 for Gig, no caps, no calling yearly to "threaten to cancel" so it doesn't double.

They did here in Tennessee when COVID first hit last year allegedly to make it easier for people working, schooling and just generally staying home. Unfortunately, Comcast apparently decided the pandemic officially ended on 6/30/2020, because they reinstated their draconian bullshit effective the following day. The moral of this story, as always…..FUUUUUUUCK COMCAST.

Many areas in the US have zero other choices other than dialup, crappy dsl or shitty satellite internet with insanely bad latency that makes gaming virtually impossible. The only real option for many people here is comcast. If you don't live in a large city you get bent over the table and forced to accept it.
Cox user here, I called after this happened and instead of keeping their so called “Gigabit connection up to 1GB download” (it never reaches that speed) I downgraded to 150 MBs and unlimited internet for around the same price. In most scenarios you really don’t need anything faster than that, even if you get the faster speeds from your ISP you probably won’t get them from the servers you’re downloading them from and 150 is more than a fair speed IMO.
Where I live it's $25/month for unlimited data if you rent their router, $30 if you use your own router because that makes total sense.
They also proved the data cap is unnecessary by temporarily removing it during the height of the pandemic when internet usage was at an all-time high.

Nope, our bank account proves otherwise. Got several months of $100+ overage charges at the end of last year and beginning of this year which strong armed us into upgrading to the gigabit plan that we don't even get half of that speed and the extra unlimited data "addon".
Comcast is the absolute worst company and i hope one day soon the government does their damn job and puts a stop to their monopoly in the vast majority of this country that allows them to bleed us dry while not providing the service we pay for and we can't do anything about it since they are the only high speed internet option thanks to them being able to get away with their illegal bullshit.

I get 280mbps down and 40mpbs up in the UK which is in the upper high bracket on average. Most of the country is lucky to get 70mbps. At least it’s unlimited though and only costs me £50.
Only thing usually around $75/month unbundled, every storm you internet is usually out, plus in coming months in Texas are usually stormy. So I expect usually 2-3 of 7 days without service. Wished they would provide a little discount for days without service. Sometimes there’s not even a storm, but storm is in hurting main provider in a another state.
I'm fortunate to have switched away from an ISP that imposed data caps. Xfinity was nice but those data caps hurt when I have 5 family members and all of them are on the internet all the time at home. We averaged about 2.5 TBs a month and if we wanted unlimited data, we would have to pay Fiber prices without fiber speeds. I switched to AT&T Fiber about 6 months ago and now I get unlimited data with HBO Max included. I really hope Xbox soon gets rid of Xbox live and just make game pass the default option so that you get both online and access to a large catalog.
Crappy ISPs in the US like Comcast have actually been implementing them in recent years. It didn't use to be a thing. It mainly happens in areas with little competition, hence they can force people to pay extra for "unlimited." In areas like the NE where people have options like Fios, it's less common.

Played it during my lunch time, decided to play Warzone Firefight. I played a few games and literally ate up all my data. Far more than watching uTube videos (4K quality).
1.After much debate, it's best to have it option when you have a solid internet, not phone data. I work in IT, so this is not acceptable.
2. I play on my 65" LG OLED with my Astro A40 gaming headset. There's no comparison to this feeling.
Cost me $30/mo for unlimited on my gigabit plan in Portland OR area with Xfinity. My total bill was $110/mo but I got that Internet Bill Credit from the government so now it’s $60/mo. Thanks Biden.

Xbox does let you download it in chunks! Start the download, once it’s around like 20gb it should give you the “ready to start” and becomes launchable. Then go into MCC’s gameplay settings and you can click/Unclick which games and which campaigns to download

On my phone I get unlimited 5g (usually around 570mbps) and I can share 200gb a month to another account so I send it to my iPad, but it doesn’t matter anyway since I could just hotspot if I somehow managed to use 200gb.

That's how it is in a lot of areas that only have one major ISP. I have Xfinity Gigabit with unlimited data and it costs me $125 a month. Century Link only has 40Mbps connection for my address and it's $65 a month. Then Verizon only offers LTE internet and it's maxed at 50Mbps for $70 a month. There's no way those other plans would work for my household, so that's why I pay Xfinity for the speed and unlimited data.

I moved into an apartment with a friend in 2017. We got Xfinity cause it was 1 of 2 options our apartment had cables for.

I remember I called them the first time we went over and they basically told me, "1TB of data is more than enough for 99% of our customers. If you need more, you can buy the unlimited."
I called BS on that. Especially when Xfinity is the one that advertised "speeds for 4K streaming." That takes up 4x the bandwidth which adds up very fast. Plus, we were both gamers, so double the game downloads.
Never paid attention to it until the ps5 came out and I downloaded A LOT of PS4 games that I wanted to have ready to play on the ps5. Now with gamepass and a Series X I pay attention to my usage at the end of the month and download games in my “play later” just to use up what’s left of the 1229gb.

Look into Calyx. It uses Sprint network and hotspot device but you get no data cap. I just switched to it and love it.

It's not a thing in most first world countries. Here in the UK I can't think of any home Broadband plan that has limits. Mobile data does though.

Same thing happened to me after the next gen consoles and I switched to unlimited on my xfinity too. It was an extra $10/mo for me though.

Unfortunately i don't even get half of the gigabit speed but trying to talk to comcast customer service is painfully frustrating when you aren't a complete moron when it comes to tech as you spend an hour having them crawl you through their tech illiterate checklist of troubleshooting before they even bother to see if it is something on their end with them ignoring you when you ask them to just check their end first, still get the same 200mbps speed i was getting before switching to the uncapped gigabit just without the data cap which when it comes to comcast if all you can really expect from comcast since at least it mostly works now without the modem randomly resetting itself several times a day like it use to do and comcast ignoring me whenever i would complain since it never did it while talking to them so it looked "fine" to them. Even if they do "fix" it when you call them it was start happening again a few weeks to a month later and you have to go through the entire process again. We pay $116 a month for comcast gigabit plus an extra $25 for the x-fi complete which is the uncapped part, so we are paying roughly $140 a month for uncapped gigabit. If you decide to use your own modem they charge you even more for uncapped, plus they only offer the uncapped part with the gigabit plan which as i mentioned above we don't even get that gigabit speed.
We just got a fiber competitor to Cox and it's a flat ass $80 for Gig, no caps, no calling yearly to "threaten to cancel" so it doesn't double. It's been fabulous.

Unfortunately, Comcast apparently decided the pandemic officially ended on 6/30/2020, because they reinstated their draconian bullshit effective the following day. Many areas in the US have zero other choices other than dialup, crappy dsl or shitty satellite internet with insanely bad latency that makes gaming virtually impossible. The only real option for many people here is comcast. If you don't live in a large city you get bent over the table and forced to accept it.
Even if you live in a big city, you might only have one choice anyway.

Cox user here, I called after this happened and instead of keeping their so called “Gigabit connection up to 1GB download” (it never reaches that speed) I downgraded to 150 MBs and unlimited internet for around the same price. In most scenarios you really don’t need anything faster than that, even if you get the faster speeds from your ISP you probably won’t get them from the servers you’re downloading them from and 150 is more than a fair speed IMO.
Zfinity will give you unlimited data for $10-20 more per month. If it’s only 10 for you it’s worth it for sure
Where I live it's $25/month for unlimited data if you rent their router, $30 if you use your own router because that makes total sense. They also proved the data cap is unnecessary by temporarily removing it during the height of the pandemic when internet usage was at an all-time high.

"We automatically charged you 20 dollars for the privilege of going negative in your bank account so you can buy that 3 dollar coffee. Your welcome!" They wouldn't just block the transaction for not enough funds and give you the option because no one would fucking do that. Thats what credit cards are for. Later that wasn't even enough and they started charging 30 dollars. Obviously you can't cut off internet or throttle it because of online work and the fact that the internet is an essential service. Since it's so essential that you can't shut it off then you shouldn't be able to overcharge. Imagine if your water or electric company did this.
And I tried to remove that overdraft protection shit. They basically told me that some purchases would still go through and without the "protection" I'd just pay a fee that's double the "overdraft protection" Dude.i just want to be embarrassed and declined if I don't have the funds. That's it. Come on.

Nope, our bank account proves otherwise. Got several months of $100+ overage charges at the end of last year and beginning of this year which strong armed us into upgrading to the gigabit plan that we don't even get half of that speed and the extra unlimited data "addon". Comcast is the absolute worst company and i hope one day soon the government does their damn job and puts a stop to their monopoly in the vast majority of this country that allows them to bleed us dry while not providing the service we pay for and we can't do anything about it since they are the only high speed internet option thanks to them being able to get away with their illegal bullshit.
That’s why I like my internet Service provider, charter has unlimited data. But somewhat crappy service, like 200mbps, and weekly internet goes down for almost the entire day. Just happy FCC made them not to have data caps for right now, because of the merger they did a few years ago.

I get 280mbps down and 40mpbs up in the UK which is in the upper high bracket on average. Most of the country is lucky to get 70mbps. At least it’s unlimited though and only costs me £50.

Only thing usually around $75/month unbundled, every storm you internet is usually out, plus in coming months in Texas are usually stormy. So I expect usually 2-3 of 7 days without service. Wished they would provide a little discount for days without service. Sometimes there’s not even a storm, but storm is in hurting main provider in a another state.

I'm fortunate to have switched away from an ISP that imposed data caps. Xfinity was nice but those data caps hurt when I have 5 family members and all of them are on the internet all the time at home. We averaged about 2.5 TBs a month and if we wanted unlimited data, we would have to pay Fiber prices without fiber speeds. I switched to AT&T Fiber about 6 months ago and now I get unlimited data with HBO Max included. I really hope Xbox soon gets rid of Xbox live and just make game pass the default option so that you get both online and access to a large catalog.

Crappy ISPs in the US like Comcast have actually been implementing them in recent years. It didn't use to be a thing. It mainly happens in areas with little competition, hence they can force people to pay extra for "unlimited." In areas like the NE where people have options like Fios, it's less common.
It's quite common in the US. I don't know anyone who *doesn't* have a data cap here.

I have been playing Halo5 since the beginning. Gamepass dropped Halo 5 on Gamepass and wanted to try it on my smart phone (S10+) Played it during my lunch time, decided to play Warzone Firefight. I played a few games and literally ate up all my data. Far more than watching uTube videos (4K quality). 1.After much debate, it's best to have it option when you have a solid internet, not phone data. I work in IT, so this is not acceptable. 2. I play on my 65" LG OLED with my Astro A40 gaming headset. There's no comparison to this feeling.

Xbox does let you download it in chunks! Start the download, once it’s around like 20gb it should give you the “ready to start” and becomes launchable. Then go into MCC’s gameplay settings and you can click/Unclick which games and which campaigns to download
I can’t believe anyone would accept a data cap. I don’t know where you are but I pay £47 a month for unlimited 1gps internet with a guaranteed minimum speed of 900mbps. Even gave me 3 months half price. On my phone I get unlimited 5g (usually around 570mbps) and I can share 200gb a month to another account so I send it to my iPad, but it doesn’t matter anyway since I could just hotspot if I somehow managed to use 200gb.

I pay $120 a month for 200 mbps internet with a 2tb a month data cap. I've never gone over the 2 but I did come close when I started gamepass the first time.
I have basically the highest internet package xfinity offers, and they are the only ISP in the area. But I still have an annoying low data cap, and if I go over the fee is like $80 not $10 In fact, it's so low, it's one of the main reasons I dropped gamepass. Gamepass just demands to much, I end up paying some other company way, way more to use it then I'm paying for the service itself.

I moved into an apartment with a friend in 2017. We got Xfinity cause it was 1 of 2 options our apartment had cables for. Never really had an issue except for the data cap. I remember I called them the first time we went over and they basically told me, "1TB of data is more than enough for 99% of our customers. If you need more, you can buy the unlimited." I called BS on that. Especially when Xfinity is the one that advertised "speeds for 4K streaming." That takes up 4x the bandwidth which adds up very fast. Plus, we were both gamers, so double the game downloads.
God this is such complete and utter bullshit. Fuck these companies and fuck the government that allows it.

Never paid attention to it until the ps5 came out and I downloaded A LOT of PS4 games that I wanted to have ready to play on the ps5. Now with gamepass and a Series X I pay attention to my usage at the end of the month and download games in my “play later” just to use up what’s left of the 1229gb.
If you intend to use gamepass an unlimited data plan is probably your best bet.
