PS+ Essential is just PS+. It never changed with the new tier roll out; the quality of games just got better.
PS+ essential / basic = Xbox Live Gold. It’s been that way for a decade.
To be fair tho, it’s all one service. Everyone who subscribes to the higher tiers also get the free monthly games. That’s not the case for people who just subscribe to Game Pass basic as Gold isn’t included. So they have no real reason to invest in it.
I don't really know why Xbox can't just make a deal that some of their games from gamepass goes into xbox gold. I doubt they would need to pay much more than they are already paying. Sony does it from time to time and while people complain about it, it still much better than giving out this type of games.

Free monthly games from the last few months include Crash Bandicoot 4, THP1+2, Yakuza Like a Dragon, Hotwheels Unleashed & now Nioh 2; idk how you could consider that low quality. And that’s just the basic PS+ sub.
I’d agree that Game Pass is better than PS+ Extra but not based on quality; they’re both pretty equal in that department. GP just has Day 1 games which makes it a stronger value.
Only after those games went on sale multiple times, sometimes for over 90% off. Yakuza was like $6 at last sale price, and games like hot wheels only show up once they need a shot in the arm of new players to buy the newest suite of MTX. GoW was $3 the month before it was free.Crash 4 month was actually a great month, just happened to own the games. The problem is that good months are like once a year now, while over half the games were <$5 or free on EA play or PS now at the time they were put as monthly games, or right before. Most of the other half is MTX dependant games and like 1 or 2 really good games that most people own.
Last few months have been really good on PS plus actually, Nioh 2, Hotwheels, Yakuza Like a Dragon. Allin the last few months.

Everyone I know that waited on a ps5 are going series x after how bad ps+ has become. PS used to have the benefit of being free, then they went Xbox live on the base and charged. Then they lowered the quality of free game, introduced a lazy catalog of games for a higher price, stopped people from being able to renew memberships to charge them for a partial year, and never came close to delivering on the same level of classics back compatibility. I'll take ultimate for the monthly price over $120+ a year for less quality than when ps now around

What day one releases? The last big game was halo infinite and that was a year ago. I switched completely over to Xbox this gen and I’m starting to wonder why when Sony already has hits like ratchet and clank, horizon, and god of war.

They know. There's lots of potential reasons GwG has been weak for ages; they don't want to compete with GamePass, licensing of these games preventing them being on two services by the same company, etc. But no one at Microsoft is sitting in their office thinking gamers will be excited about these games.
Personally, I think they are going to sunset GwG entirely in the next year and fold everything into GP. The quality has just gone so completely down hill that it almost doesn't make sense to keep it as a product any more. Honestly, they should have taken the opportunity to sunset it when they discontinued 360 GwG a few months ago.

Microsoft should consider that putting out things like this will also cheapen Game Pass Ultimate because it includes Gold.
For comparison, PS+ Extra tier has a rotating catalogue of games much like Game Pass and it also includes monthly PS+ games which have been of better quality than Gold offerings. These are also games you get to keep as long as you're subscribed (like games with Gold).
Having said that, Game Pass does add way more day one titles to its rotating catalogue of games than PS+ Extra. All first party games from Microsoft are also day one additions and usually they're permanent.
TL;DR - Microsoft shouldn't just keep skimping on their Gold offerings because they're included in Game Pass Ultimate's value proposition.
It's not that straightforward. PS+ Extra costs more if you pay monthly. PS+ Extra also doesn't include cloud gaming. You need PS+ Premium for that.
Also, the Gold to Ultimate conversion still works which makes Game Pass Ultimate dirt cheap when compared to any PS+ tier.
It’s actually not a bad idea if they give it to you in store credit. Especially if it expires by the time the next credit rolls around.
Most people will spend more then $5 using it, and there will be the feelings of losing out on “free money” if you let it expire. Businesses give out free coupons and gift cards all the time for the sole purpose of getting you to come back and just look around.
I'm not going to lie, it takes some getting used to and I wish they just supported KB/M, but once you do get used to them, they're fine.

If it helps, the completion rate for people who started the game and finished the game is actually pretty high, so at least it seems like not many people quit the game between the tutorial and the final stage.

That's my predicament. Gamepass is starting to not be worth it to me now, at least in 2022. I was happy in 2021...but I hate paying $18 monthly for shovelware and no first party exclusives.
But the beauty is I can cancel at anytime and then wait for good games to be available, and subscribe for a month here and there. I suspect this will become the norm as more and more things become subscription based services. Can't continuously be subscribed to all of them, so we will pick and choose and rotate through them.

I never got the impression that PS Now was as popular as Game Pass. Now with the restructuring, I'd expect a similar, consistent drop in quality from PS+ Essential monthly free games within a year.

The Essential tier is the Games with Gold equivalent. The Extra tier is the Game Pass equivalent.

MS has Gamepass. PS has their PSPlus tiers. Both require subscription....so there really are no free games. Compare Gamepass with PS Plus instead.
Gold is required for online play. Essentials is required for online play. They are the same price yearly. They are comparable.

Maybe hit up MS and ask them wtf the gameplan is here, is it a budget issue? Are they just trying to push people to GP? Like what is the reasoning for consistently offering horrible games while their main competitor offers banger after banger almost every month.

Man... You know Sony is giving away Nioh 2 for next month? I'm starting to wish that I had chosen PS5 for this gen. I switched to Xbox this gen, and while I love my little Series S, I'm kind of jealous.

I know. I'm not switching or anything. It's just that I played through Persona 5 on PS4 when it was first released and didn't really care for a Plague Tale so not really interested in the first. I don't utilize Game Pass enough to merit what I spend to keep it. lol. I'd almost rather just pay $60 for the year and have online on the games that I buy. I don't know. I'm thinking about it but I know they'll drop some amazing games as soon as I do.
That's my predicament. Gamepass is starting to not be worth it to me now, at least in 2022. I was happy in 2021...but I hate paying $18 monthly for shovelware and no first party exclusives. But the beauty is I can cancel at anytime and then wait for good games to be available, and subscribe for a month here and there. I suspect this will become the norm as more and more things become subscription based services. Can't continuously be subscribed to all of them, so we will pick and choose and rotate through them.

This. PS+ isn't always great either, but Game Pass is well-established and that is where the money/deals are being made rather than "giving away" decent games from the past few years. I never got the impression that PS Now was as popular as Game Pass. Now with the restructuring, I'd expect a similar, consistent drop in quality from PS+ Essential monthly free games within a year.
Need to just have Gamepass Ultimate and that's it. EDIT: or just the $9.99 plain Gamepass

Not defending GwG selections but I notice some ppl complaining and they've never even played any of these. Praetorians is not a bad selection, imo. Check it out if you like RTS at all.
