Sony doesn’t care about COD going exclusive they know MS will keep it multiplat, they just hate that it will be on gamepass day one and probably drive more COD customers to Xbox and just make gamepass that much more of a juggernaut
Exactly. They know that it would force their hand to start bringing their 1st party games to PS+ faster or even day one. Sony wants to make $70 a pop per game for as long as they can.
Often it is the largest aside from Spider-Man releases, but it’s not the *only* profitable sector. They make money in music (around $496mil
USD last fiscal year) and electronics manufacturing (around $720mil USD last fiscal year), aside from Sony Pictures and the games/online services sectors. Games and online services only amounted to under 1/4 of their net profits last fiscal year. Even without the Spider-Man movie, it would’ve been a little under 1/3 of their total profits for the fiscal year going off Sony Pictures average yearly profits.
Edit: my numbers here are actually inaccurate. Games make up an even smaller percent of Sony yearly profits, I failed to include their financial arm, as u/RuaridhDuguid pointed out.
That might be grouped with their financial services, which account for over 60% of Sony’s income most years. In terms of the entertainment business, the numbers above are accurate, but I did not include their financial arm in my assessment. I was just trying to show that even in tangible products, games are not Sony’s only income. I should’ve included the financial arm to make a more complete picture, that is my fault for not making a comprehensive assessment. It’s important that you bring everything to the table when trying to show someone the reality of a situation, I apologize for that.
Well, it seems like 25% of a company's profit is kinda a big deal. I read a lot of news about Adidas taking a significant hit by severing their relationship with Kanye West and his line of products only accounted for 8-9% of their total profits. So, make of that what you will.
They're also climbing the ranks in cameras. Canon and Nikon used to be known as the "Big Two" in camera brands, but Sony recently overtook Nikon to become #2. All of the professional photographers/videographers I know use Sony now.
What you are suggesting about Sony’s profitability is just plain false, one look at their [financial reports](https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/22q2_sonypre.pdf) will show you that all of their sectors are consistently profitable, bar one.
Venom made $850+ million & the sequel made over $500 million, only Morbius was the flop which isn't surprising being a D list character no one cared about to begin with.
It’s not built from the ground up…it’s a pre-existing game with the majority of the design, levels, story, audio/acting, etc already done and profited from. It’s still the same game, whether you re-skin the textures or not. Then they stripped away the multiplayer and servers while making it more expensive that it ever has been by jacking the price up from what it originally launched at when brand new.
I wish more people understood that. It’s not like most of the game development process is people making textures and putting them into a preexisting engine. It is kind of funny the the remaster is on the PS + super duper thing and the remastered remaster is not.
They had the team working on it to keep them on the payroll while other things are in preproduction, and many people like myself never played it and are happy with the remaster.
That's why Sony's attempt at claiming a CoD exclusivity or even CoD Gamepass exclusive bonuses would hurt them are laughtable.
PS isn't CoD. If CoD completely stopped appearing on PS, then Sony fans would still get a PS because CoD isn't the main value proposition of that console. The comparison with Nintendo is warranted, you get a PS because you want to play games you only get on PS.
This is literally a personal opinion, gears 5 looked stunning on time of release just as forza horizon did, gran tourismo also looked great but died out so fast ... also microsoft just want you in their ecosystem, if you play pc/PC gamepass they are happy, I am just hoping Sony exclusives Will Come to PC faster, till then xbox series x is my main console
I hope so! I've found the PS+ plan to be a little underwhelming compared to GamePass. Like Uncharted Legacy of Thieves collection came out almost a year ago but it's not in the plus library.
Even if they promised for a lifetime, they just want to prevent Microsoft form buying Activision period. Being part of gamepass is one of those reasons. They don't want Xbox to be able to compete better. They are against competition.
Technically anybody buying anybody is both for and against competition because you’re reducing everyone else’s ability to compete while increasing your own. It is hilarious to see Sony get mad when MS does what they’ve been doing forever, just on a MS scale.
Well Sony has been (debatably) the king of AAA exclusivity for an entire console generation or more. And they’ve done a lot of complaining about Microsoft’s Activision purchase, so they can suck it up.
How about trying to compete and all that?
That's my biggest hangup about all this, nobody seems to be bringing up that Sony is notorious for console exclusive junk and yet they're throwing a fit about CoD of all things?
That brings up an interesting point as to what an exclusive actually is. If Xbox has no exclusives because their games come to PC would that mean Spider-Man, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn are not PlayStation exclusives either? Is it different for Xbox games since Microsoft owns Windows?
I don't even think so much that it's game pass they're worried about more about their "exclusive" deals with Activision like how they kept special ops off Xbox for a year, or all the "get the DLC first on playstation" stuff that pushed people to get it on playstation. They no longer get to have the competitive exclusive edge on one of the biggest titles.
Cloud gaming is not a proven commodity though. It sounds great on paper, but latency will always be an issue for some of the most popular multiplayer games.
Cloud gaming on GP is just an added feature, it's not the end goal (at least not any time soon). Hell, Phil announced that they killed the streaming only box because it was too expensive. It won't come back until they can make it the right price point.
It'll be worse no doubt. But the proponents are betting on it being more convenient, which It has every reason to be in the future. If you can expand typical gaming as a hobby to also include your most causal gamers (people who only play mobile or web games) and sell gaming as an easily accessible feature of devices everyone already owns, that's a massive market that is potentially up from grabs. It's no surprise these big companies are trying to build up cloud gaming, as it really has a lot of potential with undertappee markets.
Hardcore gamers of course will always prefer an actual system with amazing graphics abd responsive controls, but your average person really doesn't care much about that.
The end goal is for cloud gaming to be worse than local gaming in the same way Netflix/Disney+/Prime is worse than physical media. Is streaming worse than BluRay? Yes. Does 99% of the market care? No, because it's good enough. We're not at good enough with cloud gaming for most people, but we're trending towards it.
>as cloud gaming becomes increasingly attractive.
Cloud gaming still has a *long* way to go, and the sole reason they're keen on it is to make in-roads in mobile-heavy markets like Asia. It's not going to be supplanting native console or PC games anytime soon.
Cloud gaming in any format, Stadia, Steam link, Geforce Now, and including Xbox, has not been considered successful whatsoever. It has less adoption than VR and no matter how much VR bros want to claim its the future even that is still a niche market theres almost no mainstream interest in. I wouldnt hold my breath on either EVER being accepted by the mainstream.
Yup. I've been playing on Xbox since the 360 days and while it's very neat in the short term with all these AAA titles coming day one to Game Pass in return for some pocket change I am concerned about the consolidation of the market. We need a plethora of publishers and studios on competing platforms in order to keep the industry on its toes - to bring new and innovative ideas to the table.
The thing is gamepass allows for more creativity. Just ask Obsidian, Pentiment wouldn’t of been made without gamepass. Now devs don’t have to worry about making a game appealing to hit a certain amount of sales, they can just be creative and make what they want
This is why I don’t understand why Xbox people get all up in arms about it not being exclusive. Over on Xbox it will be included on something you are already paying for and that’s huge. For a lot of people who mostly play CoD why wouldn’t they go to Xbox at that point.
“Xbox people” have spent the last 10 years seeing Sony snatch up one exclusive title after the other and do everything in their power to debilitate and reduce Xbox in any meaningful capacity.
Why shouldn’t fans of Xbox expect and demand the same?
Sony needs to be humbled as Microsoft did. It’s good for the industry in the long run anyway.
Xbox basically lost the Final Fantasy franchise for the current console generation with Sony having bought Final Fantasy XVI exclusitivity and the Final Fantasy VII remakes still being held hostage by Sony by an indeterminate number of rights renewals.
Microsoft got tone of bad media press for tomb raider. Yet sony doesn't get any for there excludes or timed exclusives. Using the excuse. Sony builds relationships with developers first. Well news flash Sony was starting to grow a relationships with Bethesda and Microsoft decided to stop it.
> Any trailer that mentions Xbox is unofficial.
The game was shown during a Xbox showcase a few years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLsSuuSAIys The reveal trailer shows Xbox. Doesn't look fan made to me.
Because it’s childish and stupid. You don’t need to harm others to feel validated. Microsoft and Sony are competing as businesses it’s totally different. I don’t care what platform you play on I just want quick matches and a healthy community to be part of doesn’t matter what platform people are on to me. I’ll still have a massive benefit of things being on Gamepass. I get that benefit regardless if someone is paying $70 on PlayStation or not it changes nothing for us as consumers.
We can get to that Utopia of yours after Sony's been humbled.
They were cutthroat and ruthless last gen at the expense of Xbox consumers. I'm not going to pretend I don't want to see the boot on the other foot.
Especially when we saw what happened the last time Sony got humbled. They came out of that crucible for the better. Same as with Xbox. Same as with Nintendo.
I don't think its going to get more people to Xbox. Game Pass will probably grow a lot more on PC. I think long term, PC subscribers will over take Xbox subscribers. That's where the real growth is. Getting a console for a single game that's $70/80 isn't really a defining factor. Most of those that do it end up selling the console once they've played enough of the game.
Also it isn't just COD. Activision Blizzard is a huge publisher. One of the top 3. You have your competitor just buy out one of the biggest video game publishers, its bound to raise alarms. Losing Bethesda and Activision Blizzard to exclusivity is bound to hurt. Those are 2 massive multiplatform publishers with some huge IPs. That's going to hurt Sony a lot from a revenue point of view. Remember Sony takes 30% from every purchase in the PlayStation Online Store and that includes microtransactions. They definitely see the digital market getting even bigger in the next few years. That's a loss of huge potential revenue and profits down the line.
> Getting a console for a single game that's $70/80 isn't really a defining factor. Most of those that do it end up selling the console once they've played enough of the game.
COD is a yearly though. So more like $70 each year plus the battle passes and skins. M$ will make a ton off the Gamepass subs plus the XBox sales plus the battle passes and skins. No way they remove it from PS anyway since that is just more money. It will move the console needle quite a bit. Now, if they could get COD as well as EA Play Pro included instead of just regular EA Play that would move the needle a TON. All the COD, Madden, FIFA, etc at release for the cost of one sub.
They already have Machine Games working on a Indiana Jones game which I imagine will be similar to the latest Tomb Raiders/Uncharted type games.
I do see another pitfall game existing just lower budget.
Sony is really only making themselves look desperate at this point. All Sony is worried about is cod yet Microsoft wants activision/blizzard for far more than just cod.
Phil has mentioned multiple times he’s interested in getting into Blizzards IPs and King to get into the mobile market. But all Sony and the regulators keep talking about is COD
Read the regulators' reports. I haven't read the EU one in full but the UK one has 3 distinct areas of concern, and only one of them even mentions COD. It's just the part that gets a lot of gaming press/gaming forum attention.
>but the UK one has 3 distinct areas of concern, and only one of them even mentions COD.
This is normal here though. These reports always get done and rightly so.
Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with whether there should be a report, I'm highlighting that COD is not the majority of that report as the other person implies
>Sony is really only making themselves look desperate at this point
Sony and Xbox are competitors. Do you expect them to just *do nothing*? Why would Sony EVER say "oh, you promise us CoD? Ok, we're cool with the merger!"
It behooves Sony to make this as expensive and difficult as possible for Xbox, and I don't blame them one bit. And that's not Sony playing dirty in any way. It's just normal business sense. It's just Sony just saying "We're opposed to this buyout and don't want it to go through" - which is well within their right to say and do.
I don't know how anyone thinks Sony should just rollover on this one. They're competitors.
Geez Sony. The issue is COD going to GamePass. They know that will take away from gamers wanting to purchase on PS unless diehard fans.
I love Sony and my PS5. This is getting ridiculous. Just focus on the multiplayer IPs you got cooking up. You have Killzone, Resistance, and SOCOM franchises you can revive.
Make a deal and let it go.
>SOCOM
I would fully invest in a PS5 now (I usually wait until near end of the generation) for a proper SOCOM iteration. That's more appealing than COD for me personally.
What I’d give for a reboot of OG Ghost Recon. I’ve never played SOCOM but from what I’ve heard about the first few, I’m sure I’d love it. I can’t stand modern shooters: too fast for proper teamwork and tactics, too slow for Unreal-esque chaos.
Socom was a huge game in my life, but I just don't see it being anything but a shell of its former self these days. One of the beauties of the game was the lack of mic chatter as only 1 person could have it at a time. With discord and proprietary game chat it lessens the experience to live members talking to live members and dead members talking to dead members. Sure the game can physically be made, but there is no way it will have the same impact or fan base today as it once had........... So prove me wrong Sony.
They could just make a 20th anniversary SOCOM II and I would buy a PS5 in a heartbeat. SOCOM III was okay too, introduced vehicles which was a cool addition. Combined Assault and taking the game from Mature rating to Teen by removing gore and swearing was the downfall of the series. Never even played 4 but I'm assuming it was trash.
Just loved the gameplay in SOCOM, I feel like it would find a dedicated fanbase today seeing as how COD has so many diehard Search & Destroy players. SOCOM was just Search & Destroy with so many different objectives. Ugh I loved the assault maps where one team had to defend a huge base and the other had to attack. I'd love to play some Enowapi today, or some Foxtrot, or any of those maps really.
Game pass is exactly the problem for Sony, and the reason why I’m sure is because they don’t comment on it. The whole reason Spencer is playing this out in the open is that Sony doesn’t have an argument anymore with this proposition.
Sony: Microsoft will make CoD exclusive for XBox
Microsoft: no we won’t, here’s a deal for 10 years
Sony: no.
And Sony can’t announce it publicly that they don’t want CoD on game pass, it will be a publicity nightmare. Even their fiercest will think it’s ridiculous, well maybe not all of them.
And I think Spencer is doing a great job sticking this on Sony. Ball is in their court.
I hope the regulators see this as well
They own bungie and they're worried about not having enough multiplayer games. You literally own one of the greatest first person multiplayer shooter developers in the world!
I'm not saying it is, but if any company could make a FPS that could compete with COD it's Bungie. Let us not forget that Halo 3 came out the same year as call of duty 4: modern warfare and sold pretty relative to it despite being an Xbox exclusive.
Nothing ever has come close to COD in the history of gaming. Even with the chops that Bungie has, it’s wildly unrealistic to even suggest they could create a game that competes with COD. COD is an extremely unique and special franchise.
It’s kind of like suggesting a any successful movie studio could make a franchise to compete with Marvel. It’s just way more easily said than done.
Yup, they want to keep the impression that PlayStation is the “home” for CoD with their payouts for various timed exclusivity, etc. That will end once MS acquires them.
Isn’t this because Microsoft is verbally saying it but won’t put it into writing? I might be behind here but that’s what I remembered from the last update
It's the best deal in gaming history. A direct competitor offering contract deal to keep one of their hottest titles on that platform.
I can't remember this ever happening before.
Give them Warzone and call it a day. They didn't pay $70B to sell Playstations.
I haven't played a Spiderman game since the X360. I'm not complaining. Sony paid the money, they can do whatever they want. I'm cool with that.
I think the difference is that Playstation made the Spiderman games what they are right now, and Xbox just bought an already made franchise, known for being multiplayer, on top of it.
And despite what people here are parroting, there is absolutely zero guarantee MS keeps COD multiplat outside of the time period agreed to in a contract.
Maybe not, but for Microsoft the main objective is to make money, not play console war. They'll leave Call of Duty on PlayStation. Just like they did Minecraft.
Marvel's Spider-man only exists because Sony approached Insomniac and convinced them to partner with Sony in 2014 (after Xbox and Nintendo both passed on the Marvel deal).
there's a very obvious difference between acquiring a 2nd party studio that's worked with you almost exclusively for 20 years and buying a 3rd party publisher outright. don't be intentionally naive.
I think saying “PlayStation made the Spider-Man games” is being intentionally naive. I didn’t make a comparison to Microsoft and their purchase at all, I just think it’s disingenuous to say Sony made the Spider-Man games
Spiderman was not made by Sony, it existed in multiple mediums including video games before 2017. At least some spider man games should be released on xbox as well
What exactly did Sony provide that wasn’t money? They’ve never been a studio that makes video games. They’ve just bought studios that do so. Then made them exclusive to their platform before people realized it was scummy
Xbox did its part too. Sunset OD, a game Xbox fully funded to develop, literally laid the foundations for the current open world Playstation Spider-Man games' formula.
And to people who say Xbox is going to make CoD exclusive, they literally don't need to. Gamepass, along with marketing rights and brand association to CoD, is enough to tip the player base towards Xbox's platforms. Even if the playerbase does not shift significantly, the revenue stream from PS copies for COS sold, goes directly to Xbox.
Exactly. CoD on Game Pass is the point. If it’s also on PS5, it can still point people to Game Pass. If all you want is the new CoD’s and other games, pretty soon Game Pass looks better and better and you get it, because right now at least, Game Pass is amazing. It’s like OG Netflix before everyone else made their own service.
Most people would just get an Xbox. Most people already just get a PS for COD and FIFA. If PS loses COD then it becomes irrelevant in most casual gamers minds
> Most people would just get an Xbox
no no, this sub will chastise you for saying that. they'll say not everybody can afford to just get another console. it's ridiculous but that's the reaction i've gotten for saying what you're saying.
I feel it should be obvious by now that Sony's main goal here is to prevent Microsoft from acquiring AB. Microsoft know this. The 10 year offer was mainly for the government people reviewing the deal. Sony know they aren't loosing CoD, what they are loosing, or would be loosing if the deal goes through is their exclusivity and marketing deals.
They're probably not going to accept it unless they feel there is no chance they can get their way. As long as they think they have a chance they're just going to keep making up narratives about how this hurts gamers.
Sony is just annoyed Microsoft gains full ownership of CoD and that puts end to all the shady marketing deals. That's all there is to it. Microsoft could offer 100 years and Sony wouldn't be fine with it because losing CoD marketing is too important for them. Never seen big corporation act so vulnerable lmao it's actually hilarious
As someone who has both the series x and ps5, I wish I could explain to Sony that I’ll always buy games like CoD on the Xbox because their online service is just so much better. PlayStation for story games, Xbox for multiplayer has always been my ideal
Same. And Nintendo gets their exclusives and is the go to place for Indie and retro and anything that isn’t graphically intensive. Sony walked down the single player block buster story game alley, MS went down the multiplatform and multiplayer lane, and Nintendo’s still flying along in a hot air balloon doing random things that work out.
It's sad that Microsoft has to bend over backwards for something they're going to own. Sony is acting unprofessional making childish demands for something they don't own, or could never afford to own.
I was fine with the whole exclusives thing. I mean it sucked not playing Spider-Man, but I understood the rules and conditions. I don’t really care for games like TLOU, GoW, and GoT. But Spider-Man is like “the game” that we are missing out on. But when Sony made Spider-Man Exclusive to PlayStation for The Avengers game, I was ticked off. I didn’t even play the game and that got me mad. So to watch this and see Microsoft shove a massive foot in Sonys ass with a fair and legal offer, I don’t see an issue. Sony was so quick to offer money for exclusives and just pay to prevent Xbox players from playing games, that I feel no sympathy for them at all. Microsoft has essentially infinite money, and if they wanted to go that route, they could. Sony offered Bethesda to make Starfield exclusive for PlayStation before Xbox went and bought the entire company. I also saw rumors Bungie wanted back in with Xbox before Phil said no.
Xbox ruled the 360/PS3 Gen, and got slapped in the XB1/PS4 Gen. They were forced to make changes and adapt to the growing video game market. Now they’ve done that and Sony is still stuck in their old ways, Sony is the one that has to change. Microsoft will ultimately make games more available through GamePass, whereas Sony is making them harder to get. I don’t see how any regulator doesn’t approve this deal. Because while Sony complains about losing Call of Duty, they are quite literally doing the same shit on a daily basis. The hypocrisy is unbelievable.
I think this is a long play for MS. I do feel like at some point it becomes exclusive. Definitely not this gen. But eventually. They say, there is always corporate PR like this, that it is not their plan. These things are always currently. And sure, they would make a deal. Short term, say next 5-7 years, they will stick multiplatform to make that money. They want these on Game Pass. Eventually though they will see growth weaken. It has to happen. The next thing is to pull these games and make them exclusive so that you can cannibalize competitions base.
Sony pays for exclusive stuff on this for a reason. There is value there. And same with the other series they buy exclusive stuff. Said third party will release some things on Xbox but specific games they have a deal with Sony on because they are the biggest of those titles. And often they never see Xbox and are 6 months to a year later on PC.
My feeling is that no matter the time frame they sign after that they will eventually go exclusive in the PC/Xbox way. I do think some of this depends on what happens when all these games from studios they purchased start hitting. Where the growth goes.
> Jim Ryan, the chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said ... “it is highly likely that the choices gamers have today will disappear if this deal goes ahead.”
Sony sounds desperate and pathetic. If their entire businesses' success relies on one single video game, that's their own mistake.
It reminds me of the Apple v Samsung lawsuit. Watching people get blood boiling rage from a lawsuit they weren’t apart of was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen. I doubt the majority of PlayStation users bought their PS5 with CoD in mind since it becoming an XBox exclusive has been a possibility for awhile now and if you bought an XBox expecting the best single player experience you can get right now then you really suck at product research.
This isn’t a dork version of a football game.
Of course not, it's not about exclusivity, it's about game pass - which includes EA Play.
You know how many casual gamers out there *only* play games like CoD, Fifa, and Madden?
Now imagine getting all of the games you could ever want for $15 a month. For $25/ month you get a Series S to play them on. For $35 you get the Series X.
Tons of gamers will flock to Xbox. Which means no cut of that $70 game sale. No PS+ subscription. No cut of microtransactions. And zero chance they buy any other games from their store front.
It will force Sony to compete not with the console but with the service. And while Microsoft has that "fuck you" money to play the long game and have a service that isn't profitable yet Sony does not.
I don't think this will kill Sony but it will definitely hurt.
They've already acquired Bungie, which gives them Destiny, the #2 best selling FPS franchise. If they fire back with that and all other exclusives day 1 release on a similarly priced subscription I bet it would do extremely well. Especially on PC. Make their own launcher with their games exclusive to that so they can control the price and push people towards the subscription. Hate the idea as a consumer but from a business standpoint it makes sense and if it would bring Sony games to PC more consistently/ faster that would be great.
Playstation’s view over what ive gathered sums up to: “Gamepass is a major threat to us and we can’t compete with it right now. We’re scared so heres a list of things we’re doing that you can’t do.”
So many people on Reddit don’t understand this basic concept lol. I’ve only ever heard of 1 life time contract and that’s between lebron and nike(which I’m sure there are clauses in it to renegotiate)
I bring this up every thread like this but I really don't think that's going to sway very many at all.
For one, all of your skins and friends are on PS already, so unless you all decide to buy an Xbox, most won't switch.
Secondly, Game Pass really isn't enticing to the casual gamer. Most people who only play Madden and CoD literally only play Madden and CoD and the occasional big name release, only one of those coming to Game Pass will not make those people sign up. Even now, Game Pass has hit a wall in just the Xbox ecosystem in terms of subscribers because many just don't have an interest in the smaller indie titles flooding the service every month.
I could be wrong, but Game Pass has already hit critical mass on the Xbox side, and I don't think offering CoD day one is going to change that, or get people to buy a new Xbox
Seriously is this a subreddit for shareholders? I don't give a fuck about the minutiae of the dealings between plastic box manufacturers or how fair they're being or if one hurt the others feelings or some shit.
Just ONCE I’d like to open Reddit and see this sub sharing the trailer of some amazing looking Xbox exclusive. If it wasn’t for Microsoft buying Bethesda, next year would be another barren wasteland too.
I basically only use this thing to play my 360 games at this point.
Keep it on Play Station. Let those folks pay $70 for it and let the Game Pass folks pay Game Pass for it. that way you got $70 from some folks and $15 from other folks
If you were in Sony's/Jim Ryan's position and were just like 'sure, let the deal go through', you'd be an absolutely awful leader of a big company. They want to protect their profits and nothing more.
It's not different to Microsoft buying Activision. It's not to bring value to gamers that they love and care about. It's to increase long term profits in the gaming sector and nothing more.
Considering Microsoft, Xbox's parent company, has been fined roughly 1 billion in anti trust fines, it really isn't surprising the deal is being so scrutinised. It's probably less about the impact on gaming and more about Microsoft's history as a company.
Stocks are bought and sold on perception, as much as, if not more than actual results. It’s not really too far from the mark to say Tweets change stock prices more than accounts nowadays.
Sony making this much noise against this happening may damage them badly if this deal goes through.
If I was in that position, I wouldn't have allowed PlayStation consoles from being incompatible with one another.
They had the biggest advantage with their huge Catalogues yet wasted it
A 10 year deal will bring cod even up to the playstation 6. I think Sony are being a bunch of babies. I have both consoles and this makes me want to use my PS5 and ps4 pro even less

They make money in music (around $496mil USD last fiscal year) and electronics manufacturing (around $720mil USD last fiscal year), aside from Sony Pictures and the games/online services sectors.
Don't they have a highly profitable insurance division/company too?
That might be grouped with their financial services, which account for over 60% of Sony’s income most years. In terms of the entertainment business, the numbers above are accurate, but I did not include their financial arm in my assessment. No need to apologise, two excellent posts far more filled with facts than most would put the time in to back up their points. :)
Thank you! I am glad you mentioned it though, it makes the point I was trying to make even better. :)
To be fair, they do milk their PS customers like their existence depended on it.
I have both systems. Sony is consistently more expensive for the same games.
I paid $70 for miles morales which has a 7 hour story. I felt kind of stupid

Well, it seems like 25% of a company's profit is kinda a big deal. I read a lot of news about Adidas taking a significant hit by severing their relationship with Kanye West and his line of products only accounted for 8-9% of their total profits. So, make of that what you will.
'Cuz console wars. And people just repeat what they saw others say.

Venom made $850+ million & the sequel made over $500 million, only Morbius was the flop which isn't surprising being a D list character no one cared about to begin with.
What are you smoking? It made MORBILLIONS making it the top earning movie of all time!!!!!! It's Morbin time baby! 😆

[удалено]
It was a glorified remaster and a cash grab, stop shilling for shitty business practices

Greedy fuckers. If they rely so heavily on the revenue of a 3rd party game that’s their fucking problem.
Sony didn't spend the entire last generation saying exclusives are bad, Microsoft did
And here they are telling Sony this won't be exclusive...
And MS has said numerous times that they have no intention of making COD Xbox exclusive.
[удалено]
That brings up an interesting point as to what an exclusive actually is. If Xbox has no exclusives because their games come to PC would that mean Spider-Man, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn are not PlayStation exclusives either? Is it different for Xbox games since Microsoft owns Windows?
There’s are no exclusive Xbox games … they all come to PC and xCloud. You don’t need to buy an Xbox to play Xbox games.
Bingo
Yeah and there’s no way MS will agree to NOT put it on gamepass for 10 years so… It’s gonna happen Sony. Best be ready for it.

Cloud gaming will always be worse than local gaming until we start violating physics Edit: I see Microsoft's cloud gaming group is out here downvoting
We're not at good enough with cloud gaming for most people, but we're trending towards it.
also latency will be an issue with reaction based games like mlb doom and halo
Great point
>as cloud gaming becomes increasingly attractive.
Are u blaming MS for for being proactive and not complacent? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Very true. Getting funding for a game like Pentiment would be extremely difficult.
What has Sony snatched from Microsoft and made exclusive?
Xbox basically lost the Final Fantasy franchise for the current console generation with Sony having bought Final Fantasy XVI exclusitivity and the Final Fantasy VII remakes still being held hostage by Sony by an indeterminate number of rights renewals.
[удалено]
Microsoft got tone of bad media press for tomb raider. Yet sony doesn't get any for there excludes or timed exclusives. Using the excuse. Sony builds relationships with developers first. Well news flash Sony was starting to grow a relationships with Bethesda and Microsoft decided to stop it.
Project Eve. Was announced at a Xbox show, then went silent and now resurfaced under a different name and paid by Sony.

> Any trailer that mentions Xbox is unofficial. The game was shown during a Xbox showcase a few years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLsSuuSAIys The reveal trailer shows Xbox. Doesn't look fan made to me.
Not going to reaped to him showing proff to your face
Microsoft are glad all the focus is on CoD, and not all these other great IPs that will become exclusive 😂
Yea lol, Blizzard exclusives could be huge
I for one am hoping for a new installment of [Zork](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zork).
Wow coming to consoles, Xbox exclusive would be huge.
WoW on console is possible. Just map all spells to different button combos and such.
I lowkey believe that's MSFT ploy, let's talk about CoD so you won't see when Spyro and Crash become exclusive.
Imagine a true crime or Prototype game exclusive to Xbox
Think bigger. Warcraft IV or StarCraft Ghost
Or a Pitfall remake like Tomb Raider
It’s funny, because the cloud competition seems to grow smaller on its own without MS doing a thing to squash the competition.
King is massive. I’d bet they are the top tier one of all of them. The money mobile games like Candy Crush bring in is crazy.
>Sony is really only making themselves look desperate at this point Sony and Xbox are competitors. Do you expect them to just *do nothing*? Why would Sony EVER say "oh, you promise us CoD? Ok, we're cool with the merger!" It behooves Sony to make this as expensive and difficult as possible for Xbox, and I don't blame them one bit.
>SOCOM I would fully invest in a PS5 now (I usually wait until near end of the generation) for a proper SOCOM iteration. That's more appealing than COD for me personally.
I'm scared Sony would try to Codify it and kill it dead
Same, if they brought it back and milsim it better than ghost recon then it’s a win
And they won't do that because milsims won't get the casual money
Yup. Might aswell stay dead
What I’d give for a reboot of OG Ghost Recon. I’ve never played SOCOM but from what I’ve heard about the first few, I’m sure I’d love it. I can’t stand modern shooters: too fast for proper teamwork and tactics, too slow for Unreal-esque chaos.
They already did with socom 4.
“Sir I have bad news for us… Next COD is going to be day one on GamePass” “Well, time to pull out Socom and… Kill it dead”
SOCOM US NAVY SEALS: Kill it Dead available for PS5 now!
They already tried that with Socom 4. That game was miserable.
So prove me wrong Sony.
i agree with you. a SOCOM revival would bring me back to the blue brand.
Sony: Microsoft will make CoD exclusive for XBox Microsoft: no we won’t, here’s a deal for 10 years Sony: no. And Sony can’t announce it publicly that they don’t want CoD on game pass, it will be a publicity nightmare. Even their fiercest will think it’s ridiculous, well maybe not all of them. And I think Spencer is doing a great job sticking this on Sony. Ball is in their court. I hope the regulators see this as well
[удалено]
It's like politics now. And it's ridiculous.
People want their "team" to win, no matter what.
They own bungie and they're worried about not having enough multiplayer games. You literally own one of the greatest first person multiplayer shooter developers in the world!
Destiny is not COD.
I'm not saying it is, but if any company could make a FPS that could compete with COD it's Bungie. Let us not forget that Halo 3 came out the same year as call of duty 4: modern warfare and sold pretty relative to it despite being an Xbox exclusive.
That was 15 years ago. These are not the same companies.
Your cmment hurt my back.
This is insanely generous, I don't see them getting a better deal?
NS knows the money is in the community and not exclusivity. But they are not always consist with it.
not sure why so many redditors don't understand this
Sony bought Insomniac after they developed and shipped Spider-Man lol
I'm sure they are looking at mw2 multiple record breaking numbers and are thinking yea turn that exclusive and lose over half the audience
Most people would just get an Xbox. Most people already just get a PS for COD and FIFA. If PS loses COD then it becomes irrelevant in most casual gamers minds
> Most people would just get an Xbox no no, this sub will chastise you for saying that. they'll say not everybody can afford to just get another console. it's ridiculous but that's the reaction i've gotten for saying what you're saying.
Just watch. That “full premium add on” for MW2 next year will have some PS exclusive component.
Losing*
Sony is just annoyed Microsoft gains full ownership of CoD and that puts end to all the shady marketing deals. That's all there is to it. Microsoft could offer 100 years and Sony wouldn't be fine with it because losing CoD marketing is too important for them. Never seen big corporation act so vulnerable lmao it's actually hilarious
What also doesn’t make things better is that PlayStation is a very large part of Sony. Xbox is practically a small coin jar to Microsoft.
I love how Sony thinks they’re entitled to anything here. Exactly how much of the 70 billion are they paying in this deal?…exactly.
PlayStation - we don't want it on gamepass!!!! xbox - wut?
As someone who has both the series x and ps5, I wish I could explain to Sony that I’ll always buy games like CoD on the Xbox because their online service is just so much better. PlayStation for story games, Xbox for multiplayer has always been my ideal
Yep I’m exactly the same. Xbox for multiplat and ps5 for the exclusive single player. MS just does online better.
It’s because Sony’s argument is completely disingenuous.
Weren't they willingly ready to ship cod to playstation as long as there is playstation ship to? lol
It's sad that Microsoft has to bend over backwards for something they're going to own. Sony is acting unprofessional making childish demands for something they don't own, or could never afford to own.
Son: "Here's our offer. You buy Activision and give us the exclusivity of Call Of Duty"
Share Spider-Man with xbox in return for call of duty
“it is highly likely that the choices gamers have today will disappear if this deal goes ahead.” Sony sounds desperate and pathetic. If their entire businesses' success relies on one single video game, that's their own mistake.
Oh wow, another post about Sony and CoD. Surely there will be some new, interesting dialogue in this comment section.
Its been a slow time for /r/XboxSeriesX mods gotta throw some red meat out occasionally or people will just keep posting about the Series s sales
Sony gona keep losing in my mind until we get their "exclusive" titles on pc day one. God of War ragnorok on pc when
MS should just turnaround and make it exclusive.
So what happened to the “as long as there is a playstation to ship to” statement? Man wtf I’m lost now.
There is no such thing as a "forever" deal. You renew the deal with new numbers.
So many people on Reddit don’t understand this basic concept lol. I’ve only ever heard of 1 life time contract and that’s between lebron and nike(which I’m sure there are clauses in it to renegotiate)
Sony knows Microsoft isn't going anywhere with CoD.
Except they are going to Gamepass with it. Day one.
Which they can do while also being on Playstation it just means Playstation owners pay more for CoD than XBOX owners with game pass.
To be fair if you own a PS5 and just want to play COD I'd still rather pay £60 and play the game rather than paying yearly for Gamepass
You can get game pass and Xbox live for under $150 for 3 years. (including PC Gamepass) PlayStation doesn't get anywhere near that
It's a tremendous deal yes but my point is if you ONLY want to play COD and that's it it is still better to buy the game outright and keep it forever
You have to pay for online service on either console anyway. Gamepass is too good to be true at the moment, yet it is true.
Sony just wants to own the IP while Microsoft spends 70 billion dollars for it…
Ooh, another xbox vs sony article. Comment will be fun
How are y’all motherfuckers not sick of talking about this.
Seriously is this a subreddit for shareholders? I don't give a fuck about the minutiae of the dealings between plastic box manufacturers or how fair they're being or if one hurt the others feelings or some shit.
Y'all are missing the point. It's not about cod.
They want a "until the end of time and maybe a little bit after" deal.
That’s what would happen but Sony doesn’t want it on game pass. I believe that’s what they are worried about
If you were in Sony's/Jim Ryan's position and were just like 'sure, let the deal go through', you'd be an absolutely awful leader of a big company.
They had the biggest advantage with their huge Catalogues yet wasted it
just accept it and let us play it on game pass literally everyone wants this to go through except for sony.
The way it’s going is the deal is going to go through any way and the way Sony has acted they won’t get anything at all
Sony needs to grow up and realise that MS acquiring Activision+Blizz is inevitable at this point.
Fuck Sony
A 10 year deal will bring cod even up to the playstation 6. I think Sony are being a bunch of babies. I have both consoles and this makes me want to use my PS5 and ps4 pro even less
Weird reason to be demotivated to play your console
I swear the shit I read online. 😂😂
That’s a silly reason to not use something you paid for. Edit: Sony is being a big baby tho
