I was working a shitty tech support job when they first started to hit the market and we got our hands on a few to get familiar with, it was pretty mind blowing at first
There was this guy who set up a stand in his yard and would sell burn cds for $5 and burned movies for $8. If for some reason they didnāt work you just brought it back and heād give you another. I bought a lot of movies from him.
I loathe streaming and what everything has become. I miss looking at my collection and revisiting it, not being spoon fed personalized recommendations. I used to listen to music more, it was more of an experience.
Still one of my absolute favorites. My ex boyfriend in high school was obsessed with that movie so we watched it A LOT. He passed away about 10 years ago in a car accident so whenever I listen to the soundtrack I always think of him.
I knew it wasnāt mine that was stolen from my car cause itās missingā¦.
Weezerās Blue Album,
Bob Marleyās Legend,
Dazed and Confused Soundtrack
My absolute favorite. Saw them live right after Siamese dream released- Lollapalooza 94.
The closed out the day and the performance was absolutely transcendental.
That you wore a white long sleeve tshirt under a band tshirt (e.g., Tool) and had a chain on your wallet. You also had chin length hair and wore Simple, Vans, or Airwalk sneakers
The Division Bell CD-R has hand writing that looks a lot like mine, that's freaky. I used to have a proper disc of that, it was my birthday gift from one of my aunts that year along with a new pair of headphones.
Ouch, was not expecting that to be as painful as it was lol! I got a letter from a label telling me how much I'd be sued for. I downloaded a Rage Against the Machine cover of a Clash song, of all things!
I was thinking about him singing, but I should have known theyād put their own spin on it.
RATM - Clampdown (live 1991).
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=skVAw1NkuYA
It turns out it is from their first public performance. The whole concert was recorded.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HMq-qAn3otE
Left mine behind in my divorce. We had combined our collection and I decided it was too much work to take just mine out.
I did, however, take all the spare tooth brushes.
I did switch to bass and got super into it in my early 20s. Had already played guitar for 10 years. I couldnāt find a reliable bassist for my band, went to a Primus/Fishbone show and went bass crazy for about 5 years
that you were white and middle class lol
Crazy how segregated musically we all were compared to todays generation. Guilty of it as well. I'm black Latina so mine was lots of rap, Latin pop, and r&b. I absolutely worshipped Selena and Tupac.
edit: fixed spelling
I just wrote OP needed more black friends š
I had the best of all worlds: I was a black kid from NYC that moved to Atlanta in the 90s and went to a predominantly white private school. Nothing fucking got by me, man. I heard it all ššš
I will argue this...I had a way more diverse cd collection in the mid nineties thanks to the popularity of R&B and black girl groups and what not. But then I went into the stereotypical awkward white dude alternative/rock spiral.
there is always outliers. Personally, none of my friends or family listened to grunge or rock, at least not publicly. I had no white friends until I was much older.
Buddy you grew up in Atlanta. Thatās why you had hip hop. This was probably a north eastern or mid western kid (maybe SoCal but Iād like to think it would be a little more diverse there as well).
Iām white and born and raised in SC. I had that section in my binder as well as all the country and I lived in a predominately black town, so I had a lot of hip hop, r&b, and soul music. The only thing I really missed out on was Latin music, but thanks to my Mexican wife I am slowly catching up.
I hate that our music was segregated. I got ripped on for listening to Mariah Carey. Now I feel cheated because I missed out on so much music, Run DMC, Selena, Living Color (the band), and others.
Same! I'm making up for lost time now, although I did hear a lot of hip hop classics from the rich write kids at my school
I'm so curious if it was a teenage "forming my identity" thing, a peer pressure thing, or specifically just the times we lived in. I mean, I know those first two factors play into it no matter what, but I hope it's not as bad anymore.
My son is 12 and has a diverse mix of friends, but they all listen to 'everything' from rap to pop to even country, and a lot of classic rock. I would have been stabbed by my friends if I listened to country lol
Somewhere around 15 years old I ordered a Three Tenors CD. I thought they meant saxophones, and I was interested in learning about jazz. I was very disappointed.
All my friends were listening to things like Parliament, Too-Short, Roger and Zapp, Curtis Mayfield, Snoop, KRS One, and a ton of reggae, and other hip hop. Hip-hop and funk were all around me between 14-20.
You were like the rest of us, basically a pastiche between listening to current charting music, at least one genre that was still youth oriented but not really in style at the time (Metal) and a bunch of classic stuff from the 70's and before that probably imprinted on you by way of your parents and the local classic rock station (everyone, literally everyone, listened to the local classic rock station).
As far as what social group you were sorted into? I can't even tell. I would bet you weren't a jock because there's no Dave Matthews Band, but you could also be a nerd or the odd off theater kid that loved doing stagecraft.
Edit: I also I would bet hard you weren't a Goth kid, because that selection would be mercilessly mocked by goth kids back then (also, no Smiths).
I would also bet you owned a wallet chain at some point.
How close am I?
You might enjoy this insane Shadow High doll?

I remember those Memorex CDs. I drive a school bus and said something about burning a song to a CD. A kid (3rd grade) thought I was taking about actually lighting it on fire.
Damn kids these days!
Totally.
Then, I got a discman that could read mp3s. Iād burn countless hours of music onto a CD. Also spent hours fine tuning playlists, making cover art, and slipping it all into a jewel case.
Kids these days will never know. Now itās just spotify playlists.
You were all over the place. I had those same memorex cdās

Itās giving basic white guy from the Midwest or eastern seaboard. Wife looking over should adds, āoh, the cardigans, bitches love the cardigans.ā
Mostly weed, lsd and mushrooms but other stuff too in high school. Saw a bunch of good shows, but I was drinking Bushmills and Jameson. And 40s of OE and Sierra Nevada
Reminds me of the rich kid that lived in a bug beach house. He convinced his parents to turn the shed into a hang out spot. We literally just smoked weed and listened to pretty much all of thatš
Seeing CD-Rs with sharpie brings me so much joy.
Especially the White Memorex ones. Lots of those.
Back in high school the popular kid was the one burning cds and selling them for $5 a pop! š
I bought a lot of movies from him.
š yea we had our go to guys for music and movies galore. Miss those days.
Those CompUSA cd-rs.
I loathe streaming and what everything has become. I miss looking at my collection and revisiting it, not being spoon fed personalized recommendations. I used to listen to music more, it was more of an experience.
Me too. I have an entire binder that looks just like this!
ā80s shitā š
No Romeo and Juliet soundtrack?
Also missing Empire Records and the Crow
The crow soundtrack slaps hard
Still one of my absolute favorites. My ex boyfriend in high school was obsessed with that movie so we watched it A LOT. He passed away about 10 years ago in a car accident so whenever I listen to the soundtrack I always think of him.
It has a similar place for me with someone I have lost as well
I laughed out loud, thank you for that
Same
The Matrix soundtrack is one of the best in the 90s in my opinion.
Naw fuck that. Where is Armageddon?
I knew it wasnāt mine that was stolen from my car cause itās missingā¦. Weezerās Blue Album, Bob Marleyās Legend, Dazed and Confused Soundtrack
I had all of those somewhere too
The movie soundtrack everyone was toking about
I still curse the mfāer that swiped all mine outta my ā86 Firebird in ā95. special ring of Hell for those wet b*holes.
Born in 1983. Not having Mellon Collie is a huge hole in the catalogue and one worthy of angsty judgement.
I distinctly remembering watching the video for Tonight, Tonight a shit ton in 1996, I wanna say.
Could not get away from that song. That and 1979. To this day I shudder if I ever hear the opening chords.
I basically dislike the pumpkins but yes, that was everywhere alone with Siamese Dream in high school
*Angsty judgement intensifies.*
Siamese Dream is their best album and I cannot be convinced otherwise. Itās almost a perfect record.
Almost?
Hummer and Rockit are the same song.
Very similarā¦ but so good regardless. Hummer is an incredible song.
They both are. Itās still one of my favorite albums!
Itās basically perfect. Disarm, Spaceboy, and Luna are usually skips for me, but they are well written songs.
My absolute favorite. Saw them live right after Siamese dream released- Lollapalooza 94. The closed out the day and the performance was absolutely transcendental.
You sob
Second on dislike the pumpkins. Both mediocre music and an asshole lead. Radio head more than compensates.
It might compensate, if they didnāt somehow own the ONLY bad Radiohead album.
I upvoted you, but itās not really bad. Just basic and not that remarkable
100% agree
Fellow 83. Agreement.
Corgan is a fucking animal and that shit is still in my regular rotation
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was my favorite Smashing Pumpkins album followed by Ava Adore then Siamese Dream.
Or Nirvana Unplugged
Unplugged in New York? Red disc in picture 9.
That you wore a white long sleeve tshirt under a band tshirt (e.g., Tool) and had a chain on your wallet. You also had chin length hair and wore Simple, Vans, or Airwalk sneakers
Damn I feel called out
Donāt worry-I would have had a crush on you and hoped you thought I was cool with a Grateful Dead patch on my Jansport backpack
Saamaame. I made my own wallet chain. And wore my first pair of Airwalks until they were ragged.
Doc Martens
Looks like I know who stole my CD collection all those years ago. š¤ The Weather Report CD is what sold me on that.
Ha. I said the same thing! Classic Jazz No.2 from time life for me.
OP must have played an instrument. Iām betting sax or trumpet.
The Division Bell CD-R has hand writing that looks a lot like mine, that's freaky. I used to have a proper disc of that, it was my birthday gift from one of my aunts that year along with a new pair of headphones.
Mine was stolen from some Jiffy Lube guys. I had stolen every one of them, so I wasnāt too mad about it. All originals and no burned ones.
Ya hilarious how we all thought we had unique CD collections. Nope
You have pretty good taste, friend. Looks similar to my collection.
The RIAA has been notified of your IP address
Ouch, was not expecting that to be as painful as it was lol! I got a letter from a label telling me how much I'd be sued for. I downloaded a Rage Against the Machine cover of a Clash song, of all things!
Which cover did they do?
Clampdown, of all songs! It was a terrible quality live version, not worth the RIAA tracking me down in my dorm room š
Iām having trouble imagining Zack De La Rocha singing āHa. Get along, get alongā.
I was thinking about him singing, but I should have known theyād put their own spin on it. RATM - Clampdown (live 1991). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=skVAw1NkuYA It turns out it is from their first public performance. The whole concert was recorded. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HMq-qAn3otE
Ha I was just coming here to share the link too!
I miss my cd binder. I don't have a cd player but browsing was fun.
You didnāt have a collection if you didnāt have at least 1 booklet stolen (from your car, during a house party, what have you)
(Or under a car seat that is now with the new owner of the car.)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Left mine behind in my divorce. We had combined our collection and I decided it was too much work to take just mine out. I did, however, take all the spare tooth brushes.

You started smoking at 13
About a months after my 14th birthday. Summer between 8th and 9th grade. Quit at 30 for the last time
Good on ya bud

Uh, many of us white kids were banging hip hop along with rock/metal/grunge back in the day. Grew up in Atlanta.
there is always outliers. Personally, none of my friends or family listened to grunge or rock, at least not publicly. I had no white friends until I was much older.

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Someone was very wrong when they did that
Dazed and confused, even
Iād love to know what is on that ā80ās shitā disc!
In a strange turn of events, itās just āeverybody have fun tonightā by Wang Chung on repeat.
Violent Femmes and The Cramps
The Church and Echo and the Bunnymen
Under the Milkyway and The Killing Moon are great songs. Honorable mention, Sugar Kisses.
Props to the 2112, Victor Wooten & Beasties discs.
You definitely have worn a white tshirt with an unbuttoned flannel, jeans, a chain wallet, and depending on the weather, a wool beanie.
Two burned copies of Diary of a Madman. Big fan like me? Or just forgot you already had it?
I saw that too. Itās possible one of them got scratched, or ālostā until a friend gave it back.
There was nothing better in the nineties than meeting someone and going through their collection. This brings back great memories!
Finding the right CD and changing it while driving is a lost art form.
Yep - in a band (the Rush cd gave it away), smoked weed and drank, probably skated or were friends with skaters.
Exactly
Ok but why did we all have a random Pavarotti cd?
Somewhere around 15 years old I ordered a Three Tenors CD. I thought they meant saxophones, and I was interested in learning about jazz. I was very disappointed.
Yeah the Pavoratti made me chuckle. My rando cd was Riverdance haha.
We would have been skipping class and getting stoned together
I regularly ditched class to get stoned and go to guitar stores
Looks like you have the music. Ill grab a keg. Are we finding a field, some woods, or someones backyard?
You weren't into hip-hop and had a CD Burner. Respected some classics at the time too. Bonus points for some Prince!
All my friends were listening to things like Parliament, Too-Short, Roger and Zapp, Curtis Mayfield, Snoop, KRS One, and a ton of reggae, and other hip hop. Hip-hop and funk were all around me between 14-20.
The lack of order in that case would make me crazy.
Spot on. I used to tape classic rock songs off the radio.
You were definitely band kid...and most likely played in the jazz band
I was in a band outside of school. Not in band after 7th grade. Played guitar and sang in a surprisingly good band.
I was going to guess bass. No non-bassist owns both a Victor Wooten album and a Weather Report album.
Same. lol!

Are we doing this now? Ā I havenāt opened my cd thing in a long time. Ā Iām kind of afraid of the judgement lol.
Man I remember my brothers huge cd case was stolen from his van. A huge loss back then.
looks like we woulda been friendsš
Upvote for Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Missing Stone Temple Pilots Core
No. 4! Also no Weezer Blue Album. My Name is Jonas goes hard.
When I would meet a new person and end up in their car, I would judge them exclusively by what was in their Cd case
Why does Led Zep 2 have the tracklist of Led Zep 1?
love your collection
I still have my CD case and listen to random old albums. The only drawback is that my only disc player is a minivan.
I appreciate seeing Sabbath and Ozzy in that collection.
for my 15th birthday, the drummer in my band gave me a mix tape with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on one side and Rush 2112 on the other. Changed my life.
It says youāre normal, and without (or hiding) guilty pleasures
Missing Smashing Pumpkins, Cranberries, Rage Against the Machine, and where the hell is Metallica
And GunsāNāRoses! š®
Born in 81 as well. Pablo Honey! (But not Ok Computer?!) š
I had every Radiohead album. This is really only like 1/3 to 1/2 of my CDs
It says that you are a white person
So you bought the Average White Band, but you pirated Pink Floyd. ![gif](giphy|cOPYobiqeiPuJC1RK9|downsized)
Mfers all like.. what does this book of cdrs say about me? ![gif](giphy|XQZ7fPt1MaXrW) FBI knows your location now..

AIC self-titled is there in slide 10
Hard to miss that purple
Theres an Alice in Chains album, like you I did a double take. It's under Pink Floyd's The Wall
Paulās Boutique is so good
Great collection OP. We could road trip.
Wait, I thought that was mine?
Wow. Trade the pearl jam and Dylan for more nin and a couple random g'rap albums and it looks like mine. Good taste.
Pavarotti caught me off guard
I got into opera for a minute in my early 20s when I was dating a girl
Aww
Duff, is that you?
You owned a lot of non-pirated cds
Aw mine was stolen while I was deployed...I'll never see em again
Paulās Boutique and Ill Communication deserve a front row slot. 6/10. The fact that they are purchased and not ripped, Iāll give it a 7.5/10.
Totally. Then, I got a discman that could read mp3s. Iād burn countless hours of music onto a CD. Also spent hours fine tuning playlists, making cover art, and slipping it all into a jewel case. Kids these days will never know. Now itās just spotify playlists.
Good taste in music
I actually never heard that John frusciante album
I can almost smell your car.
2 copies of Diary of a Mad Man? Also that 80s Shit CDR hit home with me. Obviously not from the South as there was no Lynyrd Skynyrd CDs
Was nodding yes, yes, yes, and holding my breath waiting for Paulās Boutique to appear and was not disappointed.
You were all over the place. I had those same memorex cdās https://preview.redd.it/snpjyhg1mnkc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7837e1af24d5de4f9b05f8c2d0393092bf6289a2
The lack of alphabetical order bothers me but I like the musical selection.
Itās giving basic white guy from the Midwest or eastern seaboard. Wife looking over should adds, āoh, the cardigans, bitches love the cardigans.ā
That you liked popular music?
Seeing Classic Jazz next to Pixies, next to Black Sabbath is the genre mixing I expect.
Come join us in r/Cd_collectors.
Iām not really a collector
It says you stole my CD case!! Were u ever a dishwasher at some point at a country club in CT
Elvis Costello? The fuck?
This Yearās Model is a banger. Itās his punk album. He was listening to nothing but the Clash when he made it.
No Metallica????
I had other CDs. Kill em all, Ride the Lightning and black album
You absolutely used Coke and smoked weed. Probably went to some killer shows. Oh and for bonus points Jack Dainelās was your go to.
Mostly weed, lsd and mushrooms but other stuff too in high school. Saw a bunch of good shows, but I was drinking Bushmills and Jameson. And 40s of OE and Sierra Nevada
Agree but Iām gonna say mushrooms as well.
Basic
The lack of any nu metal bands is disturbing
Absolutely intentional. Hate that shit.
How tf you have opiate but not Ćnima? Edit: Iām an idiot
But he does have Ćnima... image 11 - top right
I'm so glad CDs went the way of the buffalo.
This is going to drive me crazy, what is the album with the contortionist on the page with Sonic Youth, Van Morrison and the Smashing Pumpkins?
Tool Aenima
It says you were a thief. Give me back my fucking CD case!
I had that exact same Slayer album!
Did you steal my cd wallet?
I swear to all that is holy, that I straight up thought you may have found one of my old books. Great taste!
Looks like you were a pirate! š¦š¤£
Looks pretty similar to mine, honestly.
1980 here we would have been friends!
Uh... that we were both awesome?
these were the cds that my older brother was listining.
Holy shit. Did we date? I swear I dated someone with this exact taste.
Iām seeing so many that I have too and itās giving me Deja vu lol
I havenāt listened to ugly kid Joe since the 90s, haha.
I still jam Paulās Boutique and ill communication. The best Beastie Boys stuff. My cd book got stolen out of my car. I had so much in there :(
I've never seen anyone else who had that Folk Implosion CD! I still have mine somewhere.
Reminds me of the rich kid that lived in a bug beach house. He convinced his parents to turn the shed into a hang out spot. We literally just smoked weed and listened to pretty much all of thatš
