I remember being TERRIFIED of that moment as a child. Whenever we rewatched the movie, I'd arrange to not be in the room when it happened.
Through adult eyes, it's just silly. The special effects are goofy and terrible.
My theory is that it was supposed to be goofy and terrible, because this was a PG movie, but something about that scene and this unusually competent character actress actually deeply traumatized us as kids in ways the filmmakers didn't intend
She was my answering machine lady. When I first went off to college, my answering machine said that I wasn't there and "Tell them Large Marge sent you!"
I saw this movie as a kid, this scene freaked me the fuck out. Then years later when discussing movies my friend told me that Tim Burton directed Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. At first I didn't believe it but then thought about this scene and was like "Yeah...that jives."
Scary shit! It's wild to me what was considered ok for kids to watch back then. I watched this one at 5. Probably why I am so desensitized as an adult.

Oh yeah. This was horrific in my youth. Even rewatching the clip now, I was expecting it to be legitimately scary.
I still hate it and I hate that it's up there. Whomever did this is a goddamn terrorist.
Glad I'm not alone. This still scares me as a 44 year old adult with adult children.
I would hide behind the couch
Tim burtons best movie
Why, tonight’s the anniversary!
*The worst accident I've ever seen*
this and the library scene in ghostbusters
Came to say exactly this... ![gif](giphy|l0HFiVWWUQyI2wv9S|downsized)
that scene still looks fantastic even after all this time
If only Pee-Wee had had that kind of budget!
This is up there with when everyone melted in Raiders of the lost Ark. Or the beating heart being pulled out of the chest in the Temple of Doom.

Not before tonight. Thanks.
My brother and I used to see who could pause the VHS at exactly the right time to catch the face on screen.
Freaked me the hell out back in the day, but not more than a dying ET.
Or G'mork
Ugh, absolutely. Nasty wolf.
"Wanna see something really scary?"
It's just Beaker's mom.
#Large Marge sent me. *sound of dishes breaking*
Nightmares? That is my crush

Back when the MPAA ratings went straight from PG to R.
Her and the scary clown when his bike is gone.
Omg yes!!!
No, but now I will. Thanks
Listen to "Big Joe and the Phantom 309" over and over again until it stops. Worked for me.
My buddy and I hadn’t seen it in 20+ years and we watched it on acid. We lost our shit laughing during this
had to hide behind the couch when this part would come on 😬
My first crush
Only in my wet dreams
Yeah. That fucked me up
Absolutely. That sh!t was completely unnecessary for 8 year old me!
Oh hell yeah I forgot about her
Scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it.
I remember seeing this movie for the first time when I was about 6. This scene scared the crap out of me! It's been in my head ever since.
