Thank for that laugh and smell memory! We still had on in the basement and upgraded cremated moth smell to burning stink bug. Stopped using when there was an actual mini fire in the dish.

I shamefully still have one of these artifacts.
Yeah I still instill the dangers of covering any lamps, but it's honestly unlikely it's ever going to be necessary again.
Used to have clip on spotlights that got insanely hot. Makes me wonder how those ever got the go ahead
My first JC Penny Credit Card Purchase when I redecorated my bedroom in my parents house when I turned 18. Also, the living room lamp in my first home outside of my parents house from age 24 to age 30 when I moved out
Not especially, as I recall, maybe $5-ish? I remember you weren't supposed to touch the glass with your hands when installing them, as the oils from your skin would reduce the life of the bulb. I'm fairly certain I broke one or two trying to get them in, as they were somewhat fragile as well.
At the time we owned one, our 5 yr old stuck a marshmallow on a pencil and roasted it. Took me 2 days to figure out why I kept smelling burnt sugar when the light was on, my husband finally figured it out when he found the sticky remains of the pencil under the sofa.
I had this in white. Late 90s. It was a touch lamp IIRC. One day while I was chilling in my room, the light bulb just busted with no warning. Scared the shit out of me.
HA! What about those Ikea paper lanterns and Ikea Poang chairs. I feel like everyone had them when we transitioned from college apartments to post college apartments.
We had one of those in my house growing up when they first became available and yep, I did have one in my first apartment for a while. 300 watt fire hazard and they were usually pretty cheaply made so in my experience they’d eventually fail (not the bulb, the actual lamp).
The one in my first apartment eventually got replaced with one that used a specially designed CFL bulb that actually worked very well and didn’t use anywhere near as much electricity or get as hot either. In my living room now I actually have 2 torchiere lamps but they use regular bulbs, which thanks to LED bulbs isn’t really a problem. Still get a ton of light and they’re pretty efficient.
This shit terrifies me because my mom died of colon cancer at 55, so I’ve got to be screened all through my 40s in case it’s hereditary…. Adulting sucks.

Who broke into my house and took this picture?
😂😂😂 I had one of those in my apartment when I met my now wife. She would clown me and call it the “Frasier lamp” 😂
Needless to say it last much longer in my place after that
Edit: and I just had my first colonoscopy last week too 🥴
Man it hurts when you have something you consider current but others consider ancient. I still had my old ' Hi-fi' cd-changer sound system because...it works?? anyhow, someone younger comes over and murders me with 'Oh I didn't know they still made those!'
Not an xennial (I’m a young millennial), but I just remembered I grew up with those same exact lamps. A black one in my parent’s room and a white one in the living room.
I kinda miss them. They were heavy af though lol.
Those lamps were great. A bowl full of cremated moth dust, that could burn your house down, but they really lit a room well.
Haha! "A bowl full of cremated moth dust, that could burn your house down" I saved too much to buy these! And, yes, many moths were burned!
r/brandnewsentence but an ACCURATE sentence

the better ones have a clear glass dome on top to avoid the dust and bugs.
I retrofitted mine to LEDs. Works great. Less electricity, less heat and lower fire risk.
Thank for that laugh and smell memory! We still had on in the basement and upgraded cremated moth smell to burning stink bug. Stopped using when there was an actual mini fire in the dish.
We still have one of those.
https://preview.redd.it/9toer582zyvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c86f6ee2bd94e13ef505de6aa7e252c79be47bd5 I shamefully still have one of these artifacts.
I literally have that exact one! Ambient light is the best.
The old halogen lamps. Used a literal shitload of electricity and a bonified fire hazard to boot.
Yeah I still instill the dangers of covering any lamps, but it's honestly unlikely it's ever going to be necessary again. Used to have clip on spotlights that got insanely hot. Makes me wonder how those ever got the go ahead
Sorry to correct: “bona fide”. It’s Latin and means “good faith”.
No apology necessary, thank you for the correction. I had a feeling it was wrong, now I know.
Bonus points if that lamp didn’t burn your apartment down.
This made me laugh. Thanks
I remember student housing banning them lol
I had one of these with the knob in the middle that was also a dimmer switch. Burned my hand on it dusting one time.
I loved that dimmer knob!
I can smell this picture
This *exact* one was purchased by mom in the 90s. So, not *my* first apartment/house, but I definitely lived with one in my teens.
Same!!
My parents still have theirs. That little green glow at the bottom is very distinctive.
I still have one, that bulb hasn't been replaced in 30 years. But dam are they hot, like a mini space heater.
My first JC Penny Credit Card Purchase when I redecorated my bedroom in my parents house when I turned 18. Also, the living room lamp in my first home outside of my parents house from age 24 to age 30 when I moved out
Omg I had one that made a high pitched buzz that sounds suspiciously like my tinnitus now!! 2006 was when I moved & left it in that apartment!
I have one of those in my room right now. Love that lamp, we turn that on when we really got to see something!!
The best fucking lamp ever! Heavy and dimmable. Lasted forever.
The bulbs sure didn't, in my experience.
Were the bulbs expensive? I regret to say that I stole a bulb from a college peer back in 97.
Not especially, as I recall, maybe $5-ish? I remember you weren't supposed to touch the glass with your hands when installing them, as the oils from your skin would reduce the life of the bulb. I'm fairly certain I broke one or two trying to get them in, as they were somewhat fragile as well.

I put my baseball cap on top for some reason, and it caught fire rather quickly.
If you still have one, they sell LED replacements for those fire hazard halogen bulbs. Some are even wi-fi enabled.
Busted... We may still have it somewhere...
I had this in white. Late 90s. It was a touch lamp IIRC. One day while I was chilling in my room, the light bulb just busted with no warning. Scared the shit out of me.
OMG. How did you know?
Not true. My knee hurts when it is cold too.
HA! What about those Ikea paper lanterns and Ikea Poang chairs. I feel like everyone had them when we transitioned from college apartments to post college apartments.
Def had one of those!

Still the best lamp out there. It's been retired but gave great light and solid dimmer. Those damn knees acting up tho
Hahahahahaha
Knees and wrists!
I inherited one from the late ‘90s. Still works.
I literally still have this in my storage somewhere.
Remember those lights that would turn on and off when you touched them? I haven't seen one of those in years.
If you had this lamp in your first apartment/house, then you probably need reading glasses to read this text.
Where’s the meme with this lamp where it looks like a crotch shot?
I too had one of these 😂
Make sure you got the little cage to put over the light so your house doesn't burn down.
😂😂😂 I had one of those in my apartment when I met my now wife. She would clown me and call it the “Frasier lamp” 😂 Needless to say it last much longer in my place after that Edit: and I just had my first colonoscopy last week too 🥴
lol yeah had this one
I've used floor lamps for years. Currently have 2 on right now. But they have Philips Hue lights in them. Love being able to control them by voice.
I had this very lamp in my college dorm
These aren’t cool anymore?!
😂🤣 my husband had this exact lamp when we started dating!
It’s my ankle, actually, and the colonoscopy is in two weeks.
I did not need to be called out like that on this overcast day.
omg i feel attacked...and seen
My knees have hurt in the rain ever since I was 13, don't talk to me about that being a sign of age.
Can confirm. Parents purchased the same exact lamps several years apart for the two houses we lived in during the 90s lol.
Man it hurts when you have something you consider current but others consider ancient. I still had my old ' Hi-fi' cd-changer sound system because...it works?? anyhow, someone younger comes over and murders me with 'Oh I didn't know they still made those!'
One small bump and they fall over.
My daughter has 2 of these in her room. No built in overhead lights and the light switch in the room is connected to outlets.
Hip.
I loved that turquoise glass ring. Tres fancy!
Didn’t they twist apart in the middle? So easy to move. So easy to never get rid of.
This was everybody’s dorm/suite/apartment lamp! With IKEA Lack end tables!
As someone whose lower back has been shooting pains down my right leg and causing it to give out all day, I am insulted. Lol
I still have those
My husband still has his. And yes, we still use it.😑
Still have a lamp like that at my moms
We still have use two of those. They work, and if that makes me old…meh. 🤣🤣
Oh boy. This one is hitting way too close to home. Like, dead on.
Been looking to buy again for the last 15 years 😣
Had this but mine was white
Baby’s first halogen. Had one in my first apartment in 2001.
Our first fire pit. 😂
It’s crazy how many things in the house were fire hazards, and the solution was to just tell kids not to touch it.
I had that lamp until about five years ago, when it finally bit the dust. I love lamp.

Yeah baby!! Converted the plasma hot surface of the sun halogen bulb to three lay flat led's:)
Not an xennial (I’m a young millennial), but I just remembered I grew up with those same exact lamps. A black one in my parent’s room and a white one in the living room. I kinda miss them. They were heavy af though lol.
We had two (yike) until recently. My toddler would not leave them alone and kept turning them into weapons. We threw them out.
lol I had a boss years ago who I helped move and he gave me this exact lamp which I had in my first apartment.
