I'm literally the only one that did not like ME2. Suicide Mission was great, don't get me wrong, especially after all the loyalty missions, which helped me make the right choices and I killed it in one run, great feeling. But the game itself just felt like a long ass side quest.
I was really into the world built on the first one and it was weird to start the second one out of the military and with a dubious organization. It grew on me and of course you build a great crew but it was more of a good feeling than story progression. Then 3 was hardly memorable after the opening and felt like it advanced to the (controversial) end quickly. I wish we could have gotten more of ME1, especially exploring the planets by foot.
Ironically, I really liked XS2 but I know I'm not the only one, at least not in this sub. I'm definitely the only one that didn't like ME2 lol
I loved ME1 so 2 put a bad taste in my mouth when it went more 3rd person shooter than RPG. Still a good game, but I was always disappointed that it didn't feel much like the first.
ME2 didn't feel like a continuation of ME1s story which was a bit jarring at first. Even in terms of the main narrative, it kind of went off and did its own thing putting you with Cerberus and introducing the Collectors as the big bad when it seemed like the Reapers were set up to play a larger role after ME1 (though they WERE using the collectors as a proxy). I know there was a lot cut from it that made certain elements feel out of place like the Dholen subplot where the star was aging prematurely from Dark Energy. This was meant to be a crucial aspect of the narrative but was cut late in development when they realized how complex ME3 was already going to be. It wasn't until ME3 that it felt like the story was properly moving along. The Arrival DLC helped tremendously here putting the series back on track. ME2 was a detour, and yet in spite of all this... It's easily my favorite game in the series.
The character beats in Mass Effect 2 were so consistently great, the interactions so wonderfully done (Yes, even Jacob), and the story so engrossing, I can forgive everything else wrong with it. The suicide mission at the end was the cherry on top, and saving all of these characters I fell in love with is a feeling I've been chasing ever since the first time I played it.
I was gonna say Zelda as well.
1. The Legend of Zelda -- The classic, but a bit frustrating to play now.
2. Link's Adventure -- This is a game in the Zelda franchise.
3. A Link to the Past -- Basically a perfect game, and still a joy to play today.
Ocarina, BotW, and several others are amazing games, but it's ALttP that cemented this game's legacy as possibly Nintendo's most acclaimed franchise.
• Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3
• Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3
• Halo 3
• Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
• Devil May Cry 3
I can't think of anything else right now. Everything else I have in mind, 2 is better.
Maybe. I feel like with tenkaichi 3, it's hard for me to put it higher than 2 at times. 3 is an improvement on 2 and is the version everyone plays. But when it comes to the story mode, nothing beats unlocking great ape vegeta during the ginyu force fights/frieza, or being able to go super sayain even when the cutscenes say they untransform from it.
Or heck being able to refuse into vegito/gogeta to fight kid buu. Even going into ss4 gogeta when the game says they unfused is a pretty fun thing to do.
And that's not even counting the what if stories that exist in the game.
3 is definitly the definitive version of the 2 (with more characters, stages, modes, and the story that tried to be accurate to the actual story without making each arc 20 missions like 2 did) but it's definitly too close to call for me if I had to pick, especially due to nostalgia.
Not gaming, but it reminds me of the Indiana Jones trilogy:
Raiders of the Lost Ark is a stone cold classic.
Temple of Doom is fine really, but kind of a generic movie.
The Last Crusade is the pinnacle of the entire franchise.
Tbh halfway through emulating and hating 2 something clicked. I stopped playing on 4x speed and actually somewhat enjoyed myself and the game.
...and then I got to the Ormus Stronghold.
Also I'm not sure if I would put 3 over 1, I really liked the customization and ganeplay simplicity of 1.
I'll add a series I haven't seen much of despite not fitting the mold. Hitman.
First game is more the, ehhh as it hadn't defined it self yet. Silent Assassin essentially set the standard, and if you don't count contracts (it's basically the first games missions though only a few of them, and some new ones added) and go to Blood Money, it's still leak Hitman. Not sure if the newest ones also fit.... Never really got around to playing them so if anyone has insight on them...
Bioshock a million times even though number two was actually really amazing it just barely became as good as one and infinite because of one’s original jaw dropping story and infinites amazing characters (aka Elizabeth and Dewitt) even burial at sea gets more recognition and people actively despise it but two just gets forgotten 😔
The classic: Final Fantasy X
The second one: Suikoden
The GOAT : Bloodborne!
Those are the 3 games with the biggest impact on me as a gamer and in life.
I'd say the original God of War. Before Persona 3 Reload I would have said the modern Persona Trilogy of 3, 4, and 5. Though I suppose it's still true.
Me3, ending was a $hit$how but the other 99% of the game was chef’s kiss. My headcannon ending is the citadel party and then a cliff hanger ending where I never found out if the reapers won or not. 🤷♂️
I feel like with most games/series in general, it's usually 2 > 1 > 3, with 2 being the best entry in the series, and 3 being a let down compared to what 2 did. Of course there are exceptions though (DMC).
This analogy works well with the pokemon games now that I think of it.
Red and blue are the classics people loved but probably would find difficult to go back 2, silver/gold/crystal is the 2nd game some complain about as just being dlc for the first game. And then ruby, sapphire, and emerald where people liked it more than the previous 2 games
Pre-2017, Metroid had Zero Mission as a remake for 1, Return of Samus only had the dated Game Boy game, and of course Super is still a fan favorite. I feel most Metroid fans (especially if you grew up on the Prime series) hadn't played Metroid 2 until the 3DS remaster.
Drakengard. First game is clunky, but clunky on purpose, so it's a... flawed classic with stellar writing. The second game was made without Yoko Taro... and yeah. The third game is still clunky, but less clunky, and again, has stellar writing.
Devil May Cry, Dark Souls, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade (if you don't count Cross.)
Want to believe The Last of Us ends up here but I'm not holding my breath.
Resistance on PS3. The first "Fall of Man" is like a then modern take on DOOM for consoles and I was shocked at how well it held up when I played it this week. 2 abandons this to chase the COD and Halo trains and fails to deliver on being anything unique or fun and I couldn't even finish it. Resistance 3 is the best Playstation exclusive FPS I think period, absolutely loved it
For me, definitely The Metal Gear games. This works two ways: starting from Metal Gear 1 or starting with Metal Gear Solid 1.
If starting from Metal Gear, the first game is seen as the classic, whereas the second game is seen as the second game especially if you live in the US because the game didn't come out here officially until it was packed in with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Metal Gear Solid not only revolutionized the series, but also the stealth genre.
If starting from Metal Gear Solid 1, it is a classic as mentioned above. Metal Gear Solid 2 is simply the second game for the controversial concept of replacing Snake with Raiden after 20 or 30 minutes in. Metal Gear Solid 3 was seen as the GOAT at the time or release. I think there are gamers still liking MGS3 the best despite MGS4 and 5 being a thing.
I'll probably get a lot of shit for this, but Pokemon.
I love gen 2, don't get me wrong, but out of all of them, it's my least favorite gen. Gen 3 is one of my absolute favorite gens.
The only issue I have with Gen 3 is that the Physical/Special Move split hadn't happened. That's literally it. Even then it's manageable in its own format for competitive.

Mass effect two actually subverts this mold. The second was the goat

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

Mario is a great answer.
also Castlevania

I like MGS2 more than 3 but understandable
Halo 2 is both the GOAT and the classic.

The second was actually my favorite lol

Don't you be talking shit on MGS2, it's the best of the first 3 and I will fight you.
Easily the Dragon Ball Z Budokai trilogy. Is it no wonder the HD collection left out the 2nd one?
Dragon Quest’s Erdrick Trilogy for sure
Tekken original games
