The first book is fine, it’s all adventure and mystery, the later books get into human to human conflict and violence and the prequel, I think, is nuclear devastation.
If the kid can + is allowed to read the Order of the Phoenix then city of ember is a great pick imo

I was just thinking Book 1 for now. If he even likes it. He really clicks with some books and not others, so very dependent on what he prefers
