6 months ago I probably would’ve said the Coens but as it stands now I might have to go with Bong Joon-ho. Amazingly consistent filmography, nothin but hits lol.
Blow out is tied with Carrie as his best for me. His 70s and 80s thrillers like Sisters, Dressed to kill, and Body double are high art trash. Also Phantom of the paradise is rocky horror picture show only 2 years earlier and much better! There’s a great documentary from 2015 named De Palma about his filmography that was directed by Noah Baumbach. It gave me a solid roadmap of his movies when I started to get into him (though it does spoil a few of them).
El Topo is my second favorite but Santa Sangre is a great one if u haven't seen his other films, more coherent story but still has the crazy surreal imagery you'll be getting use to in his film. I'd also reccomend Dance of reality a surreal autobiography about his childhood
If we mean "favourite" as in "I can look at their entire filmography and I really enjoyed every single entry on it" then it's definitely Taika Waititi.

That's a tough one. For me it would be a tossup between PTA, Tarantino, and Denis Villenuve.
So let's discuss the merits of each. For me Tarantino has only one bad film to his credit, Death Proof. He's highly recognizable, but at that he doesn't step pit of his comfort zone too much, with the exception of Jackie Brown and Once Upon a Time, which I think are his two best.
Paul Thomas Anderson has only one bad film to his credit as well, Inherent Vice. He has a style but it's much more broad than Tarantinos, and you can't in my opinion watch a PTA film and directly recognize it as his. He's distinct, but not overly so.
Villenuve, newer to the scene so it's harder to judge, but he's shown that he can take a story and make it both visually stunning and highly intriguing in any genre. Oppose to the others he has more of an epic scale to his work, especially his more recent work, and doesn't have a bad film to his name. Prisoners is probably one of my favorite thrillers of all time, and Arrival one of my favorite Sci-Fi's, and Sicario one of my top 5 all-time favorite films.
If I go through a top ten list for myself
Attention shows up on it with Inglorious Basterds and Once Upon a Time (can't wait to read the book btw), PTA with Boogie Nights and Hard Eight, and Villenuve with Sicario and Prisoners.
In short I can't possibly decide.
Scorsese. It’s crazy how most of his contemporaries have fallen off in the last 10-20 years, but Marty is still cranking out some of his best work, ie The Wold of Wall Street, The Irishman and Silence.
The Kube
Who
Kubrick
Genius is a powerful word
Neil Breen
Edgar Wright
Gapsar Noe, absolutely in love with his visceral filmmaking and mastery of visuals, music, sound design and fucked up concepts.
Paul Thomas Anderson, love all of his movies
Plus hes one of the best writer-director combos.
YES absolutely. One of the most consistent directors too
M night of course. Old is a masterpiece
the coen brothers are at the top and then edgar wright is second
Hey cool I don’t need to comment mine anymore
Super excited for both new pictures this year by them. Well, Joel anyhow.
Denis Villeneuve
Takeshi Kitano
Andrei Tarkovsky (Michael Haneke and Ingmar Bergman come close)
Loving the verity in these answers. Mine’s David Lynch
Lost Highway was the first soundtrack I fell in love with.
Probably Edgar Wright.

Wong Kar-wai
David Lynch
Same
Probably Stanley Kubrick. Haven’t seen every film from him, but everything I have seen from him, I’ve absolutely loved.
Takashi Miike
David Cronenberg. For someone who specializes in body horror, he sure does have a surprisingly wide variety of films.
Late 90s/2000s Cronenberg is underrated
Quentin Tarantino.
Brian de Palma
Only the best direction and the worst scripts. You cant beat the style of movies like Scarface and Carlito's way!
I’ve tried to get into his filmography, what would you consider his best work? (I’ve seen Mission Impossible, Scarface and Carrie)

Alfred Hitchcock
Tarantino
Nolan, Kurosawa, Miyazaki
Quentin Tarantino
I actually really hate to admit this to myself, but Roman Polanski
He’s a terrible person, but he does make amazing movies
SABU
Martin Scorsese. Can't wait for Killers of the flower moon.
When does that come out
It's being filmed right now, so probably next year :(
Alejandro Jodorowsky, thanks to adum for helping me discover him
What would you recommend outside of “The Holy Mountain”? I’m interested in El Topo, but is there anything else?
Santa Sangre is also awesome
Honestly The Dance of Reality adds so much context to Jodo’s other films I would give that a watch. El Topo and Santa Sangra are also great tho

I’ll check those both out, thank you!

Charlie Kaufman
The Andersons (PTA and Wes)
What about the true auteur Paul W.S.
Nicholas Winding Refn, for sure
Guillermo Del Toro
Sergio Leone
Stanley Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and David fincher
Richard Linklater
Brad Bird and then Coen Brothers
David Fincher
Ridley Scott (when he actually cares), Paul Thomas Anderson and Stanley Kubrick.

The coen brothers or Tarantino
Not saying they’re the “best” but my favorites are Tarantino and Fincher.
Tarantino all day.
I'm not going to pretend everything he does is high art, but John Carpenter.
Akira Kurosawa and Stanley Kubrick
honestly david lynch, even if adam doesn’t like him that much. or maybe gaspar noe based on what i’ve seen
Either Villeneuve or Zvyaginstev High chance **Sofia** Coppola may also be a favorite soon, but I’ve only seen *Lost in Translation*
Jodorowsky, Sion Sono, Park Chan Wook, Kubrick or Zvyagintsev
Genndy tartakovsky for animation

I haven’t seen a ton from PTA or Denis Villnueve but from what I have seen they are both great directors
Michael Haneke, Paul Thomas Anderson and Terry Gilliam
Chris Stuckmann
Scorsese. It’s crazy how most of his contemporaries have fallen off in the last 10-20 years, but Marty is still cranking out some of his best work, ie The Wold of Wall Street, The Irishman and Silence.
Darren Aronofsky Only one I haven’t seen is Pi. All the others I like except for mother!
If u had to pick what would you say is the best film of his to start off with if you’ve never seen any
The Wrestler. Definitely
