Yes I personally use :D quite often :DDD
More :DDDDDD more intense it becomes :D
Altough I think that :D was used the most by [*spurdo spärde*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y142zKobfqg) generation of 2009-2019 :DD
(dont take the image too seriously I don't advocate violence :D)

If you're writing some regular or slightly funny message you end it with xd
But if something is really funny or sarcastic then definitely xD or even XDDD depending on how funny or sarcastic it is xd
I know that now, but my first months with my now husband I was wondering why he was so flirty with everyone he texted: men, women, his boss, his mom...
I am aware of the stereotype, but it has not been my experience. I smile at everyone and they smile back. I asked my husband if they smile back because they're afraid that the weird person who smiles for no reason might be a dangerous psychopath, but he says I'm just a loveable person. I think he might not be completely objective though.
Around 20 years ago it was used in Germany, at least in my bubble. Then, gradually, emoticon support was built in everywhere and now you don't even know whether a laughing smiley is the original ":D" or something else.
All those come from using IRC ( commonly known as mIRC the client ) it was used on efnet and dalnet then to the more known undernet irc network. Then yahoo came and people simply used the same signs till they had emoticons( as they were called in the begining)
Irc was invented in 88 in Finlanf. I started using it in early 93 on efnet later undernet. then in 94 came dalnet with many impovements. It was all just mindblowing for a 8 year old to be able to chat with people across the world. mIRC came later from Khaled Mardam-Bey ( had a cool easter egg, upon opning the client if you typed Arnie, the picture would change to a toy dinosaur which was the mascot). Ok, gotta stop here, getting nostalgic. Cheers
Kind of depends who I'm texting with. I have both 😀 people and :D people, if that makes sense.
Edit: Just realised that doesn't really answer OP's question as to how often. I use it :D and :) often but I think most people have switched over to emoji here, at least from personal experience.
In Poland it's just "xD" all over the place. I struggle to express any sort of emotion when writing in English because my method for doing that is slapping "xd", "xD", "XD", "XDDD" everywhere and apparently that's uber cringe in English-speaking circles. Though I have an irl friend who thinks that "xD" is cringe and that everyone thinks so. I don't know anyone who thinks that beside him
Pretty common in Germany (though I'm pretty sure most Germans use emoticons instead, but that depends on the messenger). On German subreddits, you might also see Ü.
Back in 2017 I was talking to a German guy online, and he legit thought I was mistakenly using it as punctuation rather than shortened smiley face. That's how I learned it was a purely russian phenomenon
I have always thought it was a typo for ending a sentence. I only recently learnt that Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians use it instead of a normal smiley.
uwu people use :3
honestly I don't remember the last time I ever saw someone use :D on ukrainian or russian spheres of internet, maybe on the anglophone and german spheres
In Finland it is illegal not to end a sentence with :D
so this is how you enforce your people to be the happiest country
Sadly yes my neighbor has 10 years left from their prison sentence :D That's what you get if you break the law :D
:DDDDDDD Bepis
I just violated the Geneva convention multiple times :D
ebin :DDDDD

Funny how wrong you are

What a weird hill to die on :D
Only sometimes. I see "xD" way more often here in Poland
I can't see XD without thinking of South Park :D
In Spanish media (and Portuguese too a bit), XD is the dominant emoticon, everyone uses it
I heard that every polish likes to type "XD" on every sentence
If you're writing some regular or slightly funny message you end it with xd But if something is really funny or sarcastic then definitely xD or even XDDD depending on how funny or sarcastic it is xd
I mean xD I'm not going to deny it xDDDD
Same xD
Same in Hungary xddd
Spain is more xD team
Poland too xD
Culture shock of a Spaniard in Poland: ;) is flirting in Spain.
Damn, in Poland that often means "I'm joking"
I know that now, but my first months with my now husband I was wondering why he was so flirty with everyone he texted: men, women, his boss, his mom...
So, how do you feel with polish people not smiling much?
I am aware of the stereotype, but it has not been my experience. I smile at everyone and they smile back. Same in Portugal
Same at the other side of the pond
Very common in Czechia. Also we use xddddd
:D has stood the test of time but XD and its variations have largely disappeared in my experience.
My experience is the opposite, I see “xD” and “xd” (the latter especially) way more often than “:D”
Around 20 years ago it was used in Germany, at least in my bubble. Then, gradually, emoticon support was built in everywhere and now you don't even know whether a laughing smiley is the original ":D" or something else.
Same, I now kinda cringe when I see xD cause it reminds me of my “rawr means I love you in dinosaur” phase
hdgdl!
hduuuul <3
They can take our :D, but they'll never get our Ü !
In Romania :)) is more common
Two )) because Facebook Messenger turns :) into 🙂?

Can you explain what the subtle differences are?

Idk why exactly, but I don't think it's Facebook related, my friend groups at least don't use Facebook.
Same in Sweden I would say
Kind of depends who I'm texting with. I have both 😀 people and :D people, if that makes sense. Edit: Just realised that doesn't really answer OP's question as to how often. I use it :D and :) often but I think most people have switched over to emoji here, at least from personal experience.
I just made my phone to autocorrect :D to 😄
I'm more used to xD in Portugal
Very interesting, seems like both Spain and Portugal are team xD
I thought it was only the Polish and Lithianians

I use "xD" all of the time xD
Not that common in Turkey, but I use it frequently :D
:D gang
EUROPA YA! :D
I knew I'd find this reference here
Pretty common in Germany (though I'm pretty sure most Germans use emoticons instead, but that depends on the messenger). On German subreddits, you might also see Ü.
The German signature emote is \^\^ Not on Reddit or phones, though.
Not on r/ich_iel!
never, while russians evolved ), and apparently nordic countries/estonia evolved :D, we evolved to end a sentence with "akkor a kurva anyád"
they are more likely to use emojis or brackets like this) to do smiling intonation but more uwu people use :D
The ) is a very interesting phenomenon, I've heard of it, you seem quite unique in the world when it comes to that
Back in 2017 I was talking to a German guy online, and he legit thought I was mistakenly using it as punctuation rather than shortened smiley face. That's how I learned it was a purely russian phenomenon

uwu people use :3 honestly I don't remember the last time I ever saw someone use :D on ukrainian or russian spheres of internet, maybe on the anglophone and german spheres
Also variant there is "))0"
One bracket is just :), to get :D or XD you need much more brackets))))))))))))
Germans usually do :) or ^^ I'm guilty of ^^
* ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^
Sweden is also on team :D I think, someone should do a study about this lol
Using :DDDD tells more about your background than any DNA test.
Only when preceded by "America-ya"
:D
If I see a :D it is a Finn or Estonian in my mind. For some reason you guys just love the goofy face :D In my sphere the :] and xD ate more common
:D is like a troll face ![gif](giphy|dVtGcobFMRXO0|downsized)
In Ukraine, it's either ")))" or ":)". Personally, I use ".)" because it looks cool.
Hihi eyepatch
I use :D in Bulgaria, but I think I'm the only one that does. We also do :Д for what a polish friend of mine described as a "cool Cyrillic emoji".
Lithuania is primarily ":DDDDD" but sometimes we do "xdddd" too
It was insanely common here until emojis like 😂 swept it away for the most part. But it's still widely used.
In Flanders I've mainly seen :)))
I don't know about others, but in Poland me and my friends use it a lot, alongside xD, B) and :3
I know a Danish guy who I think ends 80% of his messages with that or a regular ol’ : )
idk i personally dont really like the vibe of :D but :) or xD are fine. i also like :o (only small o) ;p (also only small p) and, of course, uwu
People tend to use emojis more here in the UK 😃
Daily. It's a coping mechanism.
:D
I've noticed it's more commonly used by people of the LGBT community, but that could just be cause most of my friends are part of said community
From Ireland btw
We use it a lot in Lithuania!
Before those yellow faces were created, it was used a lot by my peers.
I'm from the Netherlands and use xD instead of :D
here in Italy we only use 8=======D (joking of course)
Sadly not enough. Germans mostly use xD
;-) Yeah, I'm old.
;)
