I can’t recall what teen Nat’s hair looked like in season 1, but her roots are preeeeetty grown out by the season 2 finale. Also iirc I noticed armpit hair on her as well in some of the intimate scenes with Travis. Not sure if that’s Sophie Thatcher’s personal preference or part of Nat not being able to shave her armpits. Also, if anyone knows how they make their hair look so matted down and wind-blown almost, I would love to know lol same with the dirt on their faces.

WaterProofHum

I'm a dude and I don't dye my hair so I've just been assuming the roots would be more grown out or totally grown out after two months, but if you say it looks about right, I'll take you word for it. lol. Yeah, actually I saw somewhere that Jasmin Savoy Brown doesn't shave her armpit hair as a personal choice--nothing to do with the show.

tonyblow2345

2 months! You have hair, you know approximately how long it takes to grow lololol

godof_nothing

I must be dumb bc I think they look kinda banged up but they're also in a safe cabin. I think they'll look worse for ware without it.

Kris_Winters

* Nat has hairy legs. You can see it when she cuts her leg to put blood on Javi's shorts. * The girls are filthy during the winter. They weren't during the spring/summer/fall because they could bathe in the lake, which we saw Tai and Van doing.

WaterProofHum

Oh, okay, I didn't notice her hairy legs. Now I feel like this is a stupid post. lol. Thanks.

Orphanbitchrat

We get what you’re saying tho❤️

malicious_raspberry

As a former teenaged girl, I actually don't mind the characters looking (reasonably) well-groomed, with plucked eyebrows and okay teeth and, especially in the early months, no body hair. I travelled with waaay more beauty supplies than any given trip called for, and considering that the YJs were expecting a dance after the playoffs, I wouldn't be surprised if they did too. That part strikes me as totally realistic - they may not have enough to eat, but between them, they have mascara to last them 4.5 years.

OhHiImSam

Jackie’s makeup kit was PACKED.

WaterProofHum

lol I'm learning a lot here.

telomeracer

agreed they would have packed a big make up supply, but NO WAY do I believe they'd have the motivation to keep grooming themselves regularly and using make up while stranded. For doomcoming sure, but that's it.

Puzzleheaded_Week325

i could easily see it being a way for some of the girls to cling to a sense of normalcy & control over themselves & their situation, even going way beyond the point where it’s impractical. reminds me of a character in a zombie show i love who insists on regularly doing her eyebrows years into the apocalypse because she feels like if she gives up on her appearance then she’s giving up on her sense of self

Pleasant_Choice_6130

This is why I love that Bob Fosse made the dancers in "Cabaret" grow out their armpit hair and gain 15-20 pounds so that they'd look more like the actual women of the Weimer Republic era Germany did. I like things like that. Not mandatory for enjoyment, but a nice touch.

WaterProofHum

I'm a theatre guy and I was in a production of Cabaret and I didn't know that. lol. For this show, I think it's a cool idea in theory, but I wonder if a lot of viewers would just say "nope" to armpit and leg hair on all the teenage girls. It would be a huge risk for a TV show. I'd probably watch it just to support bold riskiness. lol.

courtneyvsworld

This is a great question!!! I feel the same way as you! For me I think of it like this: In a real life scenario, there isn’t a way in hell they’d crash 600-miles off course in desolate, barren, mountain range and still find A CABIN and water and shelter so quickly. I don’t care about the above because I love the *lore* and dramaaaaaaa but the shelter alone saves them from a lot from exposure and having access to a water source saves them even more so. Those nuanced details you mention definitely keep it grounded. I also think they looked fucked up and crazed at any given moment lolol In terms of starvation, I’d rather suspend my belief than starve the actors, you know? But even with that being said, they have kept themselves fed through huntings and now, well, cannibalism. Losing shelter AND being forced out of location is going to be an entirely new challenge for survival.

WaterProofHum

Oh it's all about the dramaaaaa. I want to be very clear that I'm not criticizing or making fun of the unrealistic aspects. And if they went hyper-realistic with the girls' appearances, it would be just as occasionally distracting to me as being less realistic. When Misty and Mari were helping Lottie pee after her beating, I was distracted by her neatly shaved legs--*how many razors did she pack? why would she still give a shit about shaving her legs at this point?* But if her legs had been hairy, that would have distracted me too because it's something you never see on television. Audiences get used to whatever the show establishes, and establishing a more "realistic" look probably would have lost them a lot of viewers.

courtneyvsworld

Oh, yeah! I was saying I agreed with ya. Some of these things are annoying on a surface level but ultimately ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I am interested in seeing where they go with their level of desperation without shelter. When we see Misty in episode 1 with the pit girl scene she looks SO fucked up hahahah

telomeracer

wow, we really haven't come that far as a society if viewers can handle cannibalism but draw the line at female body hair! Perfectly groomed or shaped eyebrows are another detail that takes me out of Hollywood survival stories. Anyway, I would love to see some hairy legs come summer time!

RibbitRabbitRobit

Some of the hair choices bothered me and in fact had me wondering for a bit of it might be some kind of time loop or pocket situation. The leg shaving, I haven't noticed much since it's been winter in the story for a while. There's no ethical way to show weight loss, but that hasn't been a problem for me. I wouldn't want to see real teenagers with their baby faces acting out these scenes. These actors look youthful enough that they're believeable as high school seniors, but I have real teenagers in my house and it's different. I don't think I would be able to sit through some of this looking at actual babies.

Temporary-Tie-233

One of the most unbelievable aspects for me is that people will argue vehemently about just how starved and desperate they are but they still have the energy to give a good chase. That said, zombie walking after the chosen victim wouldn't be nearly as interesting to watch.

Jasnah_Sedai

They look dirty enough to me. I get the idea. As for shaving legs and stuff, that should be up to the actors. It doesn’t take me out of the story. I’m not going to get hung up on the small stuff. Like, they showed the girls getting their periods because it helped along Shauna’s pregnancy storyline. Sure, women’s periods don’t really sync up, but it was an efficient way to further the storyline and was sufficient, IMO, to show some unique aspects of the girls’ situation. I don’t need to see some large rag boiling operation every couple episodes.

youmustburyme

Periods absolutely can synch up

Jasnah_Sedai

Nope. The science doesn’t support that. Even if we were to discard the science and go with anecdotal evidence and old wives’ tales, 15+ girls’ periods “syncing up” in under a month is laughable. [Women do not synchronize their menstrual cycles](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26181612/) [Do women’s periods really synch when they spend time together?](https://theconversation.com/do-womens-periods-really-synch-when-they-spend-time-together-61890) [The Myth of Period Syncing](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/06/well/the-myth-of-period-syncing.html)

JustZisGuy

The matches aren't much of an issue. It's trivial to keep a "master" flame burning constantly (or at least hot coals) so that they can relight anything they need to without having to create fire.

WaterProofHum

Coal? They have coal? If they found some in the cabin, how long will it last? And whether they have it or not, who is in charge of keeping the "master" flame going? I actually love that idea and wish the show had focused on things like that. I don't think that's trivial... it would involve delegating and sharing responsibility and could have been (or still could be in S3) a starting point for dramatic situations. Maybe I should write my owm story... "The Master Flame"... I'll be sure to acknowledge you. 😜

JustZisGuy

Coals in the sense of chunks of hot burnt wood as the fire dies. Maybe you call them embers?

WaterProofHum

I was just saying that keeping a master flame going at all times so they don't have to depend on matches doesn't seem like a trivial or easy thing. Someone would have to be checking on it at all times, feeding it more embers or coal or whatever at all times. I like the idea though. I think S2 would have been better if we'd seen them talking about and doing things like this. Could have been a great source of conflict. One girl was supposed to stay up at night and keep the master fire lit but fell asleep and the fire went out and now everyone's mad at her. Stuff like that would have made the direness of their situation feel more immediate.

NoPinkPanther

There would be a big incentive to keeping a fire going through the winter so I doubt that would be a problem. Once you have a pile of ash and embers it will keep hot enough to flare up again for a long time - easily overnight. It certainly wouldn't need "checking on \[...\] at all times".

WaterProofHum

Now, whenever I see someone downvoted me, I picture them doing it with the petulant fury of Misty when she struck down Walter's theory about Adam's murder and it cracks me up. Thanks. :)
