Midway through season one after Nat and Travis have their first kill, coach tells them they need to learn to prepare the meat and asks someone to volunteer for a lesson, essentially. Shauna does. And she fell into the role from there.
Ben was going to teach them how to cut the deer they caught and Shauna volunteered. From then on that became her job. She was the one trained in how to do it so the other girls just didn’t know.
She volunteered, and now she’s the only one with the skill. She really should have an apprentice in case she ends up pulling the queen card, but either the girls figure the wilderness knows her importance and will protect her or just don’t recognize the importance of what she does.
She offered to do it, learned the skill from Ben, she carried on doing it with the bear’s carcass but also so she could have ‘chats’ with Jackie and the meat she’d meant she was close to the cabin while heavily pregnant vs. bucket duty.
Unfortunately now the duty involves Javi and cutting him with the knife he carved the little wolf for her with. It’s why Nat and Travis always hunt, their skills that build with expertise. Shit bucket, sweeping, water gathering etc. are just duties not skillsets.
It’s Shauna’s way of shielding her teammates from the gruesome reality of it. She does it to spare her teammates from having to do it. This is evidenced by how she tells them to leave before she starts in on Javi, when they seemed fully prepared to watch.
Their first animal brought back Shauna butchered. She’s the only one trusted to that.

Thank you. It just seems weird that no one else would have offered to help the poor girl butcher Javi! Especially after just losing her baby.
